hey /glimmer/ now I'll admit I hate Starlight, but I do think she has the potential to be a great character, I just don't think the writers have really exploited it yet, so I come here legitimately curious in why you like her and am open to changing my own opinion on her
So here's why I don't like Glimmer
- Her backstory was terrible (losing one friend shouldn't make anyone into a power hungry maniac like she became)
- She constantly keeps making mistakes, keeps getting forgiven and never even learns anything
- The writers can't make any other joke about her other than "hurr remember when you were evil? durr"
- The characters in her episodes are dumbed down to make her look better in comparison
I know one of the excuses are that the writers needed new material, but they really didn't, creative writers would be able to figure out ways to keep developing the other characters
Twilight: We've barely seen her do much as a princess, maybe episodes on having to meet dignitaries from entirely different cultures, learning that she'll have to make mistakes that could very well haunt her for the greater good like Celestia did, breaking her bias towards Celestia
Rainbow Dash: She's always looking to push herself, we could see more dynamics between her and Spitfire, we could see a return of Lightning Dust, or her learning how teammates are different from friends
that's just to name a few, plus the writers have way more secondary and background characters they can develop if they're so bloody desperate for ideas, they could do more world-building
I'm not saying introducing new characters is bad, but the idea that the writers had nothing to work with without Starlight is bullshit

Agree, it should've been a lot more elaborate and heavy, also still no info on anything else she's been through all these years.

"You can't magic problems away" is the stupidest shit to repeat but thankfully we're slowly going away from it.

Writers' fault. Remember how Twilight doesn't ever bring it up? They are deliberately repeating it for some reason with other characters as if it's an excuse for something.

Debatable but somehow I feel that they were afraid to give Starlight more mundane plots like it wouldn't work for her. Even though now we see that it does work really well.

I don't agree with a lot of what they've been doing with her in the past and I agree she could've been handled a lot better. S5 finale was such a disaster and with such stellar episodes as ABU and RSF I know that this is what I want to see. I want to see friendship, her kind of friendship, isn't it special on its own without outing her as "that special pony"? I want to see her hijinks with Trixie, bonding with Maud, learning with Twilight. This is what defines her for me, the progress she's made, the relationships she developed.

She doesn't obstruct others' development so I don't know how it's relevant here. She's not tied to M6 now. I'm wholly disagree with this, that only, legimately happend in Season 6 finale, mane 6 and princesses got captured during off-screen. it was pretty bad, yes, Josh Haber can't write a good episode without a critical flaw. but other than that other characters actually improved with Starlight. Spike was a really good supporter and sidekick(which is his best aspect of character) of Starlight in the crystalling, Trixie is not one-demensional egotist character anymore, she grew alot as a character, with Starlight. same goes for Maud.

why do I like Starlight? because watching her progression, gradualy becoming a better pony with realistic way is alot enjoyable. most importantly, she's a cute character. you seem like a reasonable person so I'm gonna say this, you should see her with unbiased vision. those 'anti-starlight' people see her with incredibly biased vision and nitpicking like there's no tomorrow, looking for excuses to hate on her. if you keep doing that you'll never like her, really. there's no perfect character in MLP.

I actually really liked Pinkie in RSF. She was overprotective and worrying for Maud because she can't get a friend a regular way like Pinkie always does, and she's so focused on it she can't see how the subtle friendship forms in Maud's own way. The point for me wasn't that she acted obnoxious but the fact that it's acknowledged by other characters and by her for once and it's Starlight who points it out. Her straightforward approach was the thing that Pinkie needed. I don't think it was dumbing Pinkie down, I think it was quite the opposite. For once we see her being so invested in something she cares about a lot and being unable to deal with it in her regular fashion.

The whole dinner with princess plot in NSP was retarded and hard to watch for me but Twilight did play a key role in figuring Trixie out. She made the right call on her falling for opportunity to get petty revenge but she also saw that Trixie is legit about wanting a friend. If anyone can pick up these subtleties it's Twilight. She is always nervous about things but this time it was also the fact that she was misinterpreted. Last time she saw Trixie she wrecked Twilight's friends because she was trying to get to her, how can she not be nervous about Starlight being possibly tricked and used by the first pony she willingly opens up to? If that friendship failed the entire progress Starlight has made would be erased and maybe never gained again. If that was to happen, who would be to blame? Can you imagine Starlight, for the first time ever making a friend with everything she learned about trust, friendship and respect - and being betrayed in the worst possbile way, being just used as a tool, seeing that everything she's learned is basically a lie? It was more than just a dinner with Celestia at stake here. Twilight had every right to be worried, it was exaggerated but still.

I don't think she asked about the rocks because she found the rocks themselves all that interesting, but rather because she found Maud's love of them interesting. It is pretty common with new friends to ask about each other's hobbies, whether the hobbies are shared between them or not. It gives the one asking not only a chance to learn more about the other, but also a chance to show the other that they're actually interested in learning more. It gauges the compatibility of the two and helps start the friendship. I guess it can be argued that interest can be feigned to avoid the awkward situation of incompatibility, but I don't think that was the case here, as the two were hitting it off quite well.

As for the weirdness thing, I don't know that Starlight "embraces weirdness," just that she is weird herself, and she knows it. She realizes she would be most compatible with a friend as weird as her. In fact, when she admitted to Pinkie that she liked Maud, she gave the reason, "she's weird."
Also note her anxiety and hesitance when revealing to Maud her rather odd interest in kites, and her relief and comfort when Maud validated her interest as if it was normal. I think she recognized then that maybe Maud was as "weird" as her, and thus was a potential friend. Perhaps that is why she then decided to ask Maud about the rocks.

Went through S6 just thinking she was cute and greatly enjoyed all of her episodes. Realized in S7 how much I enjoyed seeing her improve herself and the happiness she experienced as a result.
She has an adorable personality that I can relate to in many ways.
She just makes me really happy.

I relate strongly to Glim; her struggle with a dark past (her clicking with Trixie), her general familiarity with loneliness (especially how she relates to Maud and yes, also Trixie) and her drive to learn and better herself (still learning 'friendship lessons' even till the recent episodes). She is passionate, impulsive, intelligent and lively, not to mention that she is really, REALLY brave for choosing to renounce her old philosophies and to start a new life with Twiggles under her mentorship. She shows the strength of her character by quickly recognising her mistakes, trying to learn from them, and forgiving others easily (Trixie again, but also Pinkie).

Glim's a natural leader, both pre-reform and post; the way she talks to the mane 6 and her ponies when she first met Twiggles, and when she stepped up to lead the team to the Changeling hive are great examples of that quality of hers. She also has a sweet, thoughtful side to her as shown by her learning how to bake teacakes to give to her friends even after her baking fiasco with the mind control spells.

When she fucks up, it is often because of her impulsiveness to carry out a good intention, which I personally find her innocence in this regard endearing. Her insecurity about her kite hobby also adds to her charm (similar to my insecurities about showing off my own power level about MLP, I suppose).

Her backstory can be further explored, but having been in a situation that is very similar to what she experienced, I feel that her "superficial" reason is actually enough to drive her to do the things she did.

In short, I find her to be one of the most complex and relatable characters in the show, and she is both similar to me and that which I aspire to be. Kelly Sheridan's wonderful talent in her voice acting also helps immensely.

Glim is the poner I love. She is my ideal girl and she makes me happy, so that's why I personally do not bother with all the hate and drama surrounding her.

And end of update! 5.6k words this time.

This has been a tough one to write, as I wanted to cover all the details of the plot whilst trying to balance it with SOL segments and a bit of lightheartedness here and there. I know that exposition is tough to read through, and I hope that I managed to strike a balance between presenting what is necessary and keeping it interesting for you, the reader.

Yeah, after realizing I fell in love her, I just stopped participating in and even paying attention to the drama and arguments and all of the other garbage people fuck this board up with. All that matters to me is her. Nothing makes me happier than her, and she's made my life so much better because of that.

I found some things in your green that you may want to revisit.

Also, you do have a slight tendency to use fractured sentences, e.g.
Watching her was a gift all on its own. Her gaze lingered on the plastic case while she lightly pawed at the thing to draw it closer. You had to mention to her that using magic for everything wouldn't always benefit her. She seemed to be taking it to heart. Your presence must have startled her soon after. and
The night goes on as you ask the girls if they wish to stop now or watch another. They almost appear unsure before deciding on seeing one more. They wanted to know how there could be another part or if the killer was really dead. You had to ask several times just to make sure since Trixie refused to remove her hat for a moment.
It does make reading feel jerky at times, so you may wish to piece them together for a smoother flow.
Nonetheless, it was a good read, and I really liked your work. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

As for the sentences, I can understand them seeming a bit odd here and there. I did write it while having a movie going on myself. Don't worry, I accept any errors I made. Still, it was fun to write and I hadn't done anything in a while.
