The weirdest part was that the baby seemed to understand her peacock display of friendship lesson-giving, and now that I think about it I can't recall if she got her toy back at all.

Flurry's not really at the age where she can make the connection between what she does and the outcome that happens. It stopped her from throwing a fit, but Twilight was being a bad caretaker when deciding to even take on the job in the first place. That's why she did what she did.

I still think it was an 8/10 episode, it did basically nothing actually wrong and had a lot of really cute moments and nice scenes. They played it pretty safe but still avoided being completely predictable, which is what I was expecting.
Like, including that one scene in the beginning, there was only a single reference to diapers. Whoever wrote it actually tried to do something with the plot and characters, rather than just make "a baby episode" by throwing in every possible cliche.
Even Spike was on point.

It just sounds like you have decided you are going to hate the episode regardless. Its fine to not like it, people have different tastes, but even you admit that it was well done for what it is. The problem with baby epsiodes isn't that they're inherently flawed by being baby episodes, its that 90% of them are bad.
There are plenty of episodes in the show with far worse execution anyway, and personally I'd rather get a good episode based on a mediocre concept than a bad episode that wastes a fantastic one Equestria Games
