I think some creators (writefags though in particular) have this notion where they think every single story they write needs to be a completely fresh idea. I'd argue that it's actually better to refine old ideas, instead of making a mediocre fresh one.

One of the best stories to come out of this general was the macro Pinkie in the city one. That entire story's premise was as generic as you could possibly get. However while the idea was nothing new, its prose was on point. It was written so well that despite its subject matter, the story felt fresh somehow. It felt new.

I believe that delivery is more important than the story itself. I'd gladly read another "unaware pone shenanigans #343" if it was written/delivered well, than something that tries to be original, but is painful to read.

I started writing up a post trying to dispute this, but in the process of examining those two artists, I realized you're right.

Khorme tried to world build but descended into commission-tier one-off lewd pictures. Alloy didn't really have any pony OCs of his own but did basically the same kinds of commission-style pictures with other people's OCs and with the show's cast.

Ultramare originally started off like Nim, but for people that wanted to see a pone in spandex (unfortunately though he picked the worst UG. Silk is clearly the best one). Then he did asks because it was a fun way to get ideas to draw. Finally it turned into a little series he could work on whenever he wanted. This progression however was pretty natural, and kind of a logical direction to take with the character after its popularity rose.

I understand dissatisfaction with the permanent hiatus, but I don't understand how that somehow nullifies anything good the character may have produced beforehand.

You're applying this to Goat of all people? Again I have to say I enjoy his art, but from a purely technical standpoint he's on par with Khorme. I'd argue Khorme makes more extreme perspectives look a bit better.

If your delivery is awful, it doesn't matter how good the original idea is. In contrast, a tired idea can be really great with good delivery.

Take Star Wars episode 4. At it's core, it's an incredibly generic "hero's journey" type story. However it makes itself unique by setting that story in an interesting universe, with intriguing characters. The characters themselves are common tropes (old mentor, naive young hero, dashing rogue, a princess), but they're written well so it doesn't matter. And that's the core of what I'm saying.

You can take a generic story with common character tropes, and still make it really entertaining if it's written with care.
