Challenge 3 : Rolling 2; Roll Hardier
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING VERY WELL:
You will roll twice for this one. One replying to this post, where you will be rolling for your palette
After, you will reply to my next post which will have you roll for the pony you're stuck with drawing WITH that palette!

Pick your Poison:

Baby mode: Roll as many times as you want for either one and basically do whatever because this is the easiest mode.
Medium mode: You get 2 reroll for either your palette OR your character. So you can choose 1 on each or 2 on one of them.
1a: Timed drawing - 60 minutes
Hard mode: No rerolls.
1a: Timed drawing - 30 minutes.
1b: Timed drawing - 15 minutes
Expert mode: WELCOME TO YOUR DOOM. No rerolls. You can only use up to 3 colors on your 5 color palette.
1a: Timed drawing - 30 minutes
1b. Timed drawing - 15 minutes

PS, I did this entire fucking palette by hand so y'all better preciate it.
PPS. I did my best to make sure there were more bright colors for your ponies

PS. I'm using a premade one for this because after the 3 hour funfest that was making the palette I said fuck it and used it.

Very interesting shading, indeed. Do you mind if I redline this? I'm sure you have a "style" like everyone does but there are a few things that aren't style and are bad anatomy. I do like how you used the colors though!

I'm sorry, but I really had to go in there because your anatomy was just so off. Her muzzle was too pointy (horse's or real life pony's noses are very round and smooth), her limbs were way too long, her lower half of her legs were too long and too thick, and there were a few smaller things I had to fix too. I'm fairly sure the part that made this difficult is because you painted it and probably didn't use an anatomy sketch under it

Sure, go ahead m8 . =) On my defence my "style" generally is a bit more conventional than that, but since I'm super slow to draw I tried to make everything quick (for my standards) so that I wouldn't spend more than 30 minutes from start to finish as the challenge requests.

Thanks for taking the time to make a redline for my drawing :P. I guess at the time I was going for something more "cartoonish"/"warped" than the actual pony shape in order to get something done faster. And don't worry, there's nothing to be sorry about. ;)

Here's something I started a week ago but lack the motivation to finish. What am I doing wrong? Does she look too ayylmao? Yes I know the tail is fucked. This is my second time seriously attempting poni.

Oh I didn't know you were doing that but that explains some of it. Also this is the best of the three drawings you've shown me by a long shot. The colors are great and the anatomy is a lot better than the other two.
>>29604998
That Rarity looks a lot better, but you've still got some problems. I'd redline that if you wanted me to, but I have a feeling you don't, which is fine. And you're welcome; redlines don't take long for me and I usually finish before a person even has time to answer. Th-thanks for liking my style, haha
>>29604904
This is what I wanted people to do with the palettes; substituting the obvious colors with less obvious choices! I think your palette usage was a great success!
>>29605053
If this is only your second pony, that's pretty good. I -could- redline it if you want, but I feel like at this early in the game you should be looking at the tutorials in this gallery: http://imgur.com/a/m7zQ2 , specifically (PS this goes for anyone with anatomy trouble!):
For body parts proportional to each other: http://i.imgur.com/UwSIQXy.jpg
On how to use joints: http://i.imgur.com/5PK2mhp.jpg
On understanding what parts are what compared to a human's: http://i.imgur.com/9vMkfQV.png
General anatomy: http://i.imgur.com/9c5t6gg.png
You can find a lot more in there too!
>yes I know the tail is fucked
To be fair, until you master it, her hair is ridiculously difficult.
>>29605128
Not for me but i've drawn comic strips for over 10 years. If you're having trouble, I suggest this exercise: http://i.imgur.com/LxD1tG8.jpg And if others are having trouble with it, you can do it too. Pic related are some more great examples.

Just do it. The worst that can happen is that you make ONE bad drawing. You grow and move on. If your coloring is bad then just blame it on the palette.

If you're not used to making mistakes and learning from them by now then you're not drawing enough.

I don't much care for the design but she needs a thicker tale and mane. Her hind legs need to be separated from each other and the, I don't know, knee? needs fixed too as it's a bit broken. The front arm farthest to us needs to be further from the other arm or it's going to keep looking like she's on a tightrope. The face is good though. It's not you, Fluttershy is pretty hard to shade, and it has to do with her original color being so gosh darn bright. You're going to find that a lot of artists have ended up with a darker and more orange color as the local color of her coat. That's not a bad thing; that's good adaptation. Colors change depending on the lighting.

Here's my attempts on two different cases where I've tried to account for the colors of the surrounding lights as well. In the bottom one, I use Fluttershy's original coat color as that brightest highlight color.
>>
>>29613734
>In the bottom one, I use Fluttershy's original coat color as that brightest highlight color.
Yeah that looks real great for her coat. The top one looks like you shaded with black or a black-yellow? I could not bring myself to use that color to shade with but that might just be me (Sorry).

I used a slightly darker, slightly greener yellow. It's what would happen with a bright blue sky, I think. but yeah, it's a weird color to shade with. It feels like it's very easy to take it too far, but also not to take it far enough.
>>
>>29613734

>>
>>29614347
So I'll try to play with filters and overlays a little. If it doesn't work I'll do it again. Basicly I should choose from more orange hues rather then dirty yellows. Makes sense.
Also, what with the body. You told you might do something with it.
But I am happy that beside colour error I made the right shape.

Oh the shape. It's mostly fine but you forgot her wings and I still think that hoof is weird because it's hidden behind the leg. Also her head/mane should be a bit smaller due to perspective

this eye under hair look creepy for me. Wing looks good but wings doesn't grow from middle of the back. I can't describe where they grow but just closer to front leg(?).
Also shading is fine.

This is STILL too saturated. Look at her coat; it's not bright yellow like that, so I took yours and desaturated it a little bit and made it lighter because, again, it's not a full on yellow, it's a light yellow.

That's fair, took a look at some images after you replied and I can see what you mean about the placement, will have to remember that next time i practice wings, thanks.
As for the eye thing, it's just something i've done for the majority of doing art, I dont really like obstructing the eyes because I felt like I wasn't able to get the facial expressions across when I did hide the eyes, though I could've just as easily changed the way I did manes I suppose.

Hey all.
I'm that one faggot who was trying to draw Super Saiyan Anon. Still am.

So right now, I have worked out a very retarded and overly complex system of drawing figures involving two pieces of paper.

So what I'm doing is, I'm trying to draw out the line art on a piece of paper, and when I draw say, the head in a way I like, I'll trace that head on the other sheet through the paper, and then I'll keep adding onto it...

It's fucking kinda chaotic and weird.

Pic related, I guess you can kinda see what I'm doing?

I'm having trouble trying to figure out how to draw heads. I can't seem to decide on a good reference. I figure if I just draw the shit I want piece by piece, I can slowly etch out a complete picture. But it just takes so long this way.

Maybe I'm overthinking it?
>>
>>29614842
Oh hell this arm is truely off the place.
But think about it. He's Discord so this arm can be just summoned and not his.
>>
>>29614894

>>
>>29614894
Don't do this. Just draw circles and turn them into heads.
>>
>>29614894
Maybe you should use clear paper and why are you drawing this so tiny. I know small things are easier but on the other hand it's harde to put details.
>>
>>29614923
Dunno, I'm kind of just afraid of drawing shit too big. I don't know why.
>>

I want to get this good.
Like, I don't want to be drawing some fucking amazing Zone-tier shit that I can patreon, I just want to fucking draw decently to wear you can recognize what I was trying to do and see if I accomplished it to some degree or not. I don't care about monetizing my '''art''', I just am doing this as a hobby.

I'm still drawing though like an hour to two hours a day though, been doing it for the past week, and I've made some progress, but I feel like I keep undoing it by overthinking it like I have been doing.

Also speaking of overthinking, do you guys draw the X as a guideline for your circles, or do you just draw the circle? Should I just keep doing the whole 'use crosses as guides' until I get the muscle memory down?
>>
>>29615045
I tend to save everything I ever draw, never know when I might go through my files and see something I want to redo or change up.

Sometimes I only draw for 30 minutes, but right now I have a schedule where when I lay down for 'sleep', I bring a notebook with me, and a few pencils, and my Kindle, and I just go under my sheets and I just lay there for about an hour or so just drawing shit and occasionally looking things up as reference. It works pretty ok for me. I used to do the same for when I was learning programming.

Maybe you could try that if you have a laptop or a Kindle? But I probably would suggest against it if you have a sleep schedule you want to preserve. I always wake up the same time every day: 10:30 AM, but I go to bed at fucking 2 in the morning because of the shit I do regarding my bed schedule.

I lay down at about 11 PM or so, and just browse /x/ and draw and shit until I finally get too exhausted to continue.
>>
>>29615151
I could try bringing a sketchpad and a pencil to bed with me I guess, that's always an idea, though I'm so used to the hand eye disconnect that my tablet gives me I'm a little worried about it :'^)
Also I think my sleep schedule is pretty healthy - Sleeping at 6am, waking up at 2pm, that's good right?.... right? :''''''''''''''''''^)
>>
>>29615045
Do you use a mouse for digital art? I'd like to do digital art at some point but right now I can only stick to walmart paper and pencils and pens because poorshit.

Pic related is the most 'fanciest' pen I have, it was $9, and it's in black. Honestly I like it, it feels smooth and slick, but I've been mostly using pencils.

I don't have the money for an expensive Waco thingy with magic digital pen. :(
>>
>>29615045
Do you have anything like the video you posted only in traditional art? Like pencil paper? Are the techniques employed doing digital art much more different than traditional art techniques? I think maybe I keep trying to replicate what I see digital artists do only I am doing it traditionally which might fuck me. I don't know. Perhaps it'd be better to just forget everything I know and start over.
>>
>>29615190
I use a medium Wacom Intuous Pro, but that doesn't mean I can't do traditional media (especially if I'm in a lecture). Pic related is marker and pen for the Challenge #1 I held a couple weeks ago. I really do love my tablet though. For 5 or 6 years I used a Bamboo Fun (the smallest Wacom available) and it was great and cost $70-80 - which is cheap to me, but it could be extremely expensive to others, and I understand that

Anyway, I believe you can do great things with any medium you choose or are forced to use due to whatever problems you can't fix. Also that's not a great pen for drawing. It will definitely smear if you erase your pencil underneath and you cannot color it. You should get Micron pens or other pens that will not smear nor leak into the colors (you can google this). They're like $3 dollars each or something.
>>29615274
Unfortunately the only traditional medium (paper and charcoal) I have is this one of a 2 minute gesture. It was very hard to film because I don't have anything to hold my phone up to record it, but it could help you, I'm not sure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q19LG6dwymo
Yes the techniques are different because digital is the absolutely most forgiving medium. I can try my fuckin darndest to record how I draw a pony on paper and pencil for you though some time today. I think I can tape my phone to my desk lamp or something

I'm not native to this board and browsed some /ic/ for artbooks recently. That much for my surprise to find a positive art community.
I've seen your thread by chance once and I'm glad you keep up running this, redliner. Count on me to keep on drawing Discord. Been loving him since the fateful day 'the Return of Harmony (part 2)' aired.

>>29615274
As for sketching, it's pretty much the same, except for the inability to hide layers and the resulting need to do less mistakes. However, this 'handicap' can teach you to put more love and thought into each stroke and make you more efficient, be it on paper or digital.

As for coloring, it's a waste of time trying to copy the official artstyle with colored pencils. The paper's natural texture will always look wrong (to me, atleast). Cell shading on paper only works with markers, yet those are expensive.
Once again, digital is different because of layers and transparency and the possibility to edit or erase anything. The way forme, volume perspective and light work is the same in any medium. Ways of creating the illusion of light are countless. Therefore, look up how to make good use of the tools you own. Experiment with those, google about it, experiment more.

Pic related was made with cheap colored pencils, a set of 36 colors sold for 2 or 3 bucks (Aldi). To have some texture on the shell, I actually scratched lines into my paper (sgrafitti)! Digital would have to employ other tricks to do the texture. Just hang in there, you see.

>That much for my surprise to find a positive art community.

Pastels are a pain in the ass to work with.

And it's beyond frustrating. I'm thinking about switching back to colored pencils.
>>
>>29615905
And on that note, would anyone happen to have any tips for drawing fog or mist with colored pencils?
>>
>>29615905
Yup. They are smudgy as hell. I don't get them and their appeal, either.

>>29615706
I live in a country where most people will only know his dubbed voice. Scary.

I think you'd be a good teacher as you appear really passionate.. How long have you studied art so far? Just curious. Sometimes I regret not having studied my fundies years ago. I loved drawing so much. But disappointed and overwhelmed with life, I turned away from it. Still depressed and unhealthy as ever, I woke up yesterday and thought: I've no friends and no social life and I study something I don't like (I'll switch it). Might as well be a loner that's at least good at drawing. (I'm only 19 btw)

If you ever draw a snail, be warned the usual gestures and expressions do not apply to them. I had a snail like the one drawn for years, and I even I was puzzled about this.
>>
>>29615962
I have no experience in drawing fog, but I can see well what's tricky about it. Fog blurs stuff, most of all, and blur is a pain to draw with colored pencils. Draw lightly in lots of layers... lots and lots of layers.
>>
>>29616006
If you're only 19 then you still have a chance to make friends, at least in this little community. Show kindness and you will receive it back.

You're lucky if you're that young and are getting good at art. I didn't started until much later in my life and deeply regret it.
>>
>>29615905
Oh, no, I mean I know how to use them and shit just not nearly as well as the rest I mentioned. And I'd switch back to colored pencils in a flash, haha.

>I think you'd be a good teacher as you appear really passionate...(etc)
Thanks, I'm pretty passionate about it, yeah. I'm 29 and I've taken art classes since I was 11 when I started private painting classes at some fancy shmancy ass place for a couple years.I've switched colleges a few times so I've had to take fundamentals classes 5 or 6 times now so I know that shit by heart. Luckily for you, art can be very therapeutic and I think you should try drawing again/more and learning the fundamentals better at your own pace, especially since you have no social life to worry about! Yeah so we have 10 years apart from each other and if you start drawing now, maybe you can catch up to us! And no I dont plan on drawing a snail.

Okay so I quickly did a shitty little forest and tested all my supplies
1. Acrylic paint, diluted: This one is best, IMO. You just have to be a little careful or it'll be too white, so always start with diluted and make it lighter.
2. White and black water color pencil: This looks more like a cloud's shadow than fog
3. White gel pen: I could hardly use this over the damp paper and I would not recommend this.
4. B/W water color pencils + acrylic paint: This is second placet. Basically I did the same as I did in number 2 and then added diluted white acrylic paint to the top of the trees to make it more convincing and I think it looks really good.
I also tried a white charcoal pencil but you can't even see it so I didn't bother listing it. Hope this helps!

Oops I called two of them best and two fo them second best. What I typed is what I meant. The number 1, diluted acrylic paint, is the best one, IMO while B/W water color pencils + diluted acrylic is an extremely close second.
>>
>>29616720
I'll let you know how using diluted white India ink goes.
>>
>>29616777
Also I should mention that one of the reasons I like the diluted acrylic so much is that my brush strokes really helped with the fog texture so try to do the same with the ink if you can
>>
>>29616785
>>29616777
Unfortunately, diluted India ink does not work very well on printer paper, which is the only type of paper It did achieve something akin to fog on the bit of green I had as a test, but it isn't worth destroying the paper. I will probably have to abandon the idea of putting fog into this drawing.
>>
>>29616985
Oh, I was using mixed media paper :( You could try white pastel - or anything that's DRY media on another test drawing? Is it too late to like, trace over your drawing or do a graphite transfer to better paper? Or do you not have any?
>>
>>29617001
I tried using the white pastel and a white colored pencil on both green pastels and green colored pencil segments, and the end result was that the white pastel/colored pencil turned into a green-tipped white pastel/colored pencil.

I don't have any better paper.

It's fine, though. I'm being way too ambitious with this drawing as it is.

I'm more worried about your anatomy you didn't seem to fix since the last time I saw you but whatever. Is this the one you were going to do fog for? also I'd make the water darker and more reflective of its surroundings like pic related. So far the colors are nice and saturated so I wouldn't worry about it looking like a kid drew it though

Hey, like I said, you experimented with mediums and that can still be a success for next time. And I have the same problem- especially with art class homework. Huh,I thought for sure you were using one in that pone tutorial you posted.
I'll have to figure out an alternative in Krita.
>>
>>29618862
Uhh no. I've been using tablets for 11 years; I wasn't even aware of them until a couple years ago, haha. I also don't know a thing about Krita but I know you can google for the best ones. And I also know that some other people in the thread use them so they might be able to help you, sorry.
>>
>>29618862
I'll be honest and say that I'm an advocate of not using stabilizers at all. So in my opinion, you shouldn't really be using anything beyond 'Basic Smoothing' in Krita.

I would recommend you to read up on the stabilizer settings in the Krita Documentation and then set them to as low as you can while still feeling good about in your lines. These settings are very individual. Then, turn the settings down gradually over time (every other week or something) until you don't really need stabilizers anymore.
>>
>>29618951

My art teacher once made us draw a checkerboard pattern onto faces in different angles to help us think about how the surface curves in a three-dimensional space. That might be something for you to try, because you seem to be a bit discouraged from defining certain shapes with light and shadow.

>>29619000
This is very dark and pretty unitone (if that's even a word). You even your lightest value (aside from the highlights in the eyes, ears, and horn) is below 50% gray, so you could easily expand the range of values. Furthermore, if you look at the values of twilight from the show you can see that the local values aren't the same all over, but varies between coat, eyes, mane, etc.
This helps the different parts stand out from each other.
>>
>>29619193
>My art teacher once made us draw a checkerboard pattern onto faces in different angles to help us think about how the surface curves in a three-dimensional space.

>because you seem to be a bit discouraged from defining certain shapes with light and shadow.

I'm not confident with the anatomy or the shapes I'm using. Something i'm also working on.

> local values aren't the same

Fuck. I feel dumb because I know this but didn't think to greyscale her colors to see what the local values were.

It's not that I'm completely terrible at drawing,
it's the fact that I just can't learn things for some reason.
Like, I've seen tons of tutorials and I understand how it's supposed to work, but it just doesn't.
I think of a pose, I break it down into shapes, I try to place those shapes where they should be at the angles they should have and nope.
Never looks right.
I can't hold a detailed 3d model in my mind to draw from.
And you can never find the right reference because ponies don't exist or at least the don't do what you need them doing in the picture

I can draw like one pose at one angle and that's it.
Anything else just breaks and can't be fixed. Not by my brain.

Hey some of us are totally real artists. My mom puts at least one of my drawings on the refrigerator once or twice a year!
>>29625932
>I just can't learn things for some reason.
You won't learn if you're not open to learning. That's why I can't help people with a bad attitude; they don't want to get better.
>I think of a pose, I break it down into shapes, I try to place those shapes where they should be at the angles they should have and nope.
Show me! I know I can help you if you just let me try!
>you can never find the right reference because ponies don't exist
You're wrong on that. Cats and dogs make great pony poses. Pic related, because I use them all the gosh darn time!

>Cats and dogs make great pony poses
I'm not the teacher here, but I think it's worth mentioning that front legs are pretty different in dogs (or cats) and horses. The articulation equivalent to the dog's wrist (or our wrist) is placed much higher in the horse's leg, and it acts like a knee. For what it's worth.
>>
>>29626427

I'm not the teacher either but that's why you change proportions and fit the anatomy to the pose.

Okay but we're not drawing horses, we're drawing ponies that hardly have any anatomy rules when it comes to limbs. I know the lengths are different but if you already know how the joints work, you're fine. I also made pic related to go from horse to pony which could help (yes I know the head is gigantic)
>>29626483
^
>>
>>29626483
I didn't mean to sound conceited, what I tried to say is that it's important to remember anatomy when you're a copying a pose.
>>
>>29626494
I know you weren't, but remembering anatomy is already the whole point of it

is there any good ways to draw grass?
>>
>>29627959
I think grass has as many ways to draw as there are artists out there.
I don't do it too much but when I do I just blob green hues randomly and then push the colour out of them with a blending set brush with 0 minimal size.
Haven't done grass in a while and now sadly I also don't have time to provide my kindergarten level creation.

~ CHALLENGE #4 :IDEAS ~
At the start of the next thread, I we will do an OC contest.

- Should we do best OC or worst OC?
- If you are found to steal or in any way plagiarizer you are obviously cut from the competition. If you cheat and re-enter I can't really do anything but I'd hope you guys would be honest as I hope I can trust y'all.
- You WILL need a tripcode OR a name! Otherwise you won't be able to prove your pony is yours.
- Whomever wins will get a real prize!
- If you'd like a bit of a challenge, I'll post one of the palettes and you can use it or not.
- The winner will be chosen through a poll!
- You may enter up to 3 OCs
- Your OC is limited to any kind of of pony (mare, stallion, filly, foal, baby, alicorn, earth, pegasus, unicorn and any other kind of pony I forgot), dragon, griffon, donkeys, breezies, changelings, and any other sapient beings. So no bunnies for example, but dragons are fine.

Please give me any suggestions you think would help!

Fuck I meant to say "At the start of the next thread, I want to do a new challenge and I was thinking of doing an OC challenge"
>>
>>29631736
Sounds good, but I think any generic bad OC tropes should be graded more harshly. Anyone can just color something red and black.
>>
>>29632433

I'd spread the un-inked out away from the inke leg a bit so they're not completely parallel. The front arm's a big messed up so I obviously made it so much better with my amzing touchpad skillz which hopefully can show you a little bit of what I was trying to say. (Sorry, haha)
