Well, if all you have is mouse, you don't really have an alternative. But instead of free-handing it with the mouse, you could use the line curve draw tool in something like GIMP as an alternative. I usually do that when I don't have my tablet or scanner available.

Guidelines are just guidelines. Not be-all-end-all rules. No one is shoving them down your throat. Just draw what you enjoy, try new things when you feel ready to, and slowly apply what you learn little by little. If things get frustrating there's always a way to simplify it further. If that still isn't enough to make it more enjoyable, do something else that is, an interest isn't a passion anyways.

Then after a year, try something else and realize you're shit at everything else and have nothing else to do and fall into an obsessive depression, deleting all social accounts, never updating others. Never talking to anyone, to the point if they don't live with you or know where you live they assume you're either gone in some far off land or dead ;_;

Then once you've isolated yourself completely from ex friends and make it difficult for your family to speak to you about your life and what bothers you, take out your ever-growing depression and anger on an anonymous image board community and slowly drive everyone away with your self-absorbed attitude and pessimism until you realize some people weren't meant to live a happy life

Am I the only one who can't get depressed no matter what happens? I am always happy. I had expirienced terrible things in my life but still I can't remember me feeling down for more then a day. And now when I learn to draw it's even better.
I... I just can't understand someone who says he's depressed.
>>
>>29541994
I only recommend Wacom; the size you choose is based on how much money you have to spend and how large your monitor is. I usually use the smallest size because I have a 17" monitor. I've also used an Intous medium for like a 32" Mac? (It was at school, I don't know). The software is also up to you but the best is Photoshop or Sai. If you don't know how to torrent then you're stuck with like, Fire Alpaca.
>>29542032
b&thro. Even if I cared I don't know how to draw it. Someone else might be able to help.
>>29542034
No, you are not the only one. A lot of people have horrible lives but can remain happy especially with a new(?) hobby. You don't need to understand depression for it to exist and whether or not you can does not mean you should say that to depressed people; it definitely makes it worse. Now go draw and gitgud.
>>29541836
Yeah it's a little uh, special, but the point is is that you tried a challenge and you posted it. Even if it's not the best, it still helps you improve as you do and will learn from mistakes and failures. Keep it up anon.

Study some horse anatomy. You have some weird proportions going on too. That pinkie pie, for instance, has a really thin neck. The wings on that white pony are way too big too. Stuff like that is the most jarring about your work.

So only the 5 colors with one round felt-tip like brush (solid round consistent color).
No blending, smudging or mixing or anthing like that. (Basically just hard edges everywhere)
No saturation or value control.
OC, no reference, no reroll.
The only options are the 5 colors and how large the circle is that I move over the canvas.

Not sure about the time limit though...

OC mode means you're making up your own OC before you roll. Medium is OC -or- whatever before you roll. Also I'm going to fix the rules a bit based on this challenge and hopefully I'll have them fixed by the 3rd challenge.
>>29545322
I'll have the guy that runs the Imgur pony gallery to add this. MAGNIFIQUE/10
>>29545336
>So only the 5 colors with one round felt-tip like brush (solid round consistent color).
I would allow a soft brush like for a bg if one wants but if enough people think what I'm saying is wrong then I'll fix it for next time. Like I said above, I'm hoping to have the perfect rules for challenge #3 and I have a new idea for it too
Oh there is NO time limit on THIS challenge. There WILL be one on the next challenge
>>29545492
Oh I really like where you went with this. It reminds me of when there's a big ass forest fire (California, lol) and the sky is all yellow and it gives everything this yellow/orange tinge from the ash and I love that. I hope you know it's a compliment. I do think you should, however, work on your anatomy a bit more, especially the arms. Keep it up!
>>29546125
The neck is a little too long while the limbs are all too short. The arm holding the trident is a bit longer than the other. Try the pony gallery?
>>29546215

>>29547657
Feel free to blend! Unless you're putting yourself under the harder rules, you can do that. I really like those colors; the lime, teal, and indigo go really well together. The only thing I think you need to fix is the ear because it should be concave and right now it's just an indent (does that make sense?). I can paint over it if you want. Practice your shading/light sources a bit more but good job!
>>29547697
You don't HAVE to use the time limit, and in the last thread I did a challenge last thread in traditional medium to show you guys it's possible. I mean it's not GREAT but it's possible!
>>
Lastly...
GUYS:
If you're doing the challenge can you please make sure your palette is on the image somewhere? It'll help us see how well you worked with it
ALSO:
If you'd like to submit your ideas for future rules, reply to THIS POST with ideas. Once I have enough, I'll do a poll and some other shit and we'll get it worked out.
AND REMEMBER:
Following the rules is up to YOU. If you don't think you're ready to give up black and white or you can't give yourself a time limit then don't! Do what you believe you can do but still challenge yourself!

I am very proud of you and I'm glad you're enjoying it! Rolling for mine!

Ha I was about to do a very similar palette with the same pony, drats. Well she's got a very cute face. I think you could have made the background the lighter blue color since you only used it in one place but that's up to you. Her arms and legs aren't long enough and her neck is too long. Torso needs a bit more foreshortening but you're in no way bad.

Because not everyone in this thread is ready for that kind of challenge and even just limiting themselves to a palette is more than enough of a challenge in itself. People can pick whatever set of rules they want or no rules at all. The point is gittingud but not everyone is at the same pace and sometimes youse guys forget that.

I'll admit, i'm a tad rusty lately, haven't been able to draw often anymore, and proportions is where it's being hit the hardest. been thinking about just doing some size references to get back into the groove of it.
also forshortening is something i've always been bad at, just can't seem to figure it out.
as for the blue, i can see what you mean, feels a little cheap to not use ALL the colours in moderate. Again, thanks for the feedback

I know I'm getting continuously better, and sometimes forget that everyone grows at a different pace. Sometimes I feel like I'm not doing it right if I'm not as fast, even though I know it's dumb. I guess it's a personal thing.

Perhaps I should take the hint that these thoughts never happen while actually drawing.
>>
>>29555121
Nah those thoughts happen all the time and it's not like I've never done it myself. You don't even have to draw a ton all the time because unless you're being paid for it, then art's about having fun and making stuff to make you happy, you know?
>>
>>29555121

That's a feeling that will never go away it seems. But you have to trust that the mileage you're putting in from drawing everyday day is working towards something great.

red: it's basic hair highlights. It's hard to explain why I do what I do other than it's based on this watercolory shit I do. http://rapidfireart.com/2015/06/17/how-to-draw-realistic-hair-the-ultimate-tutorial/ is a great tutorial on hair though.(There's also this one in the pony tut gallery but it's not as good as the first one I linked: http://i.imgur.com/rq27zH6.png )

purple: if the hair is next to the coat, it's going to illuminate on the hair because the hair is smooth and shiny. You don't have to do it but it looks more realistic.

blue: I just did a simple one, but there's a tutorial in the gallery that's better than I can explain it: http://i.imgur.com/mbJ0dds.jpg and http://i.imgur.com/L1GIMpC.jpg . I think the first one is better though.

soft light: I don't know what that is so I'm going to say no. I've just spent 17 years or so studying colors and how to blend my own instead of just picking shit off the color wheel

Okay...
This is probably going to be very autistic, but I've been practicing my drawing by trying to draw...

Super Saiyan Anon.

This way, I can focus on drawing just the shape of a body, and I don't have to worry about making ugly ass faces. I can just use Anon's '?' as the face.

I've only just started drawfagging, I'm a writefag by 'trade' I guess, and I never thought I could draw, but I decided "fuck it" and now I'm trying to improve, and I am actually seeing some improvement.

Pic related I spent about 5 minutes shitting out, and it's a lot better than the ones I shit out a week ago with the same amount of time.

So far, I've been practicing everyday for atleast 30 minutes to an hour, and looking up forum posts and stuff related to drawing in my spare time as well.

So far I've learned:
>How to try to see objects as isolated shapes, and drawing them as such
EG: A cup is just made up of a circle on the top for the opening, and an elongated cylinder for the body.
>Use short, light strokes for lines, instead of using hard, long strokes.
I read that the hand has more time to make a mistake and make a line look shitty if you're trying too hard and you're drawing one continuous line. Drawing in short bursts of strokes really has helped me get straighter lines.
>Try to give your very best for every drawing
Speaks for itself
>Try to draw things differently each time
This is the case for SSJ Anon. I have tried a lot of different ways to draw his hair, and recently I've begun to draw his body and his arms and fists as well.
>Have fun, dont treat it as a chore
If I don't feel like practice, I won't force myself.

I've been sticking 100% to paper and pen and pencil. I don't have a tablet(save for a kindle) and I don't have a fancy drawing stylus and I don't know if I'll ever get one.

So what do you guys think, am I at least on the right path to getting somewhere? Do you have any other advice I can add to my mental notes?
>>
>>29558783
I'm having a bit of trouble though with the whole "short strokes" shit.

So, sometimes my short strokes, even though they're short and light, still end up looking kind of shit. I just kind of try to straighten it out by redrawing the stroke, and it kind of works, but this just leads to it looking a little sloppy. In a way, I kind of like the roughness of it, since nothing in the world looks perfectly straight and all that shit, and especially when drawing flowers, since nature isn't perfect, but still.

Does anyone else here draw short strokes?

Another thing I have a problem with - keeping one side looking like the other side.e

Consider the case of a flower, I draw the stem and the then go onto draw the pedals.

The left half side's pedals look more natural than the right sides, and it leads to the picture as a whole looking kind of shitty.

I think maybe I just overthink this part and maybe that leads to my mistakes? Idk.

Shory strokes produce "hairy lines" which never looks good for a final draft. If you look at drawings done by seasoned draw fags you'll notice they all have well done long strokes. The fact is you just need to practice doing good continuous lines.

Short strokes are okay if you're doing the guide layer and trying to get proportions and shapes down. Looking at the pic you posted it seems like you're skipping this step. You need to start with the basics.

To get nice long strokes you need to learn to draw with your shoulder and elbow. There's no easy way around this in the long run

>Use short, light strokes for lines, instead of using hard, long strokes.

Drawing light is a good thing since it will give you more control.

>I read that the hand has more time to make a mistake and make a line look shitty if you're trying too hard and you're drawing one continuous line.

Going to slow will make your lines wobbly. You have to find a balance in speed so that you make solid, confident lines. Experimenting with line weight is something you should also consider.

>Drawing in short bursts of strokes really has helped me get straighter lines.

I don't understand what you mean by "short bursts." The last thing you want is "hairy" lines. Chicken scratch never looks good.

https://youtu.be/wgDNDOKnArk?t=22m52s

Here's a time-stamped video of some exercises you can do. This is stuff I still do periodically so dont know the basics. Draw with your elbow and shoulder. Keep in mind that control and dexterity will come -with time- but the more mindful you are the easier and faster it will become. Aside from lines remember to practice circles and ellipses.
>>
>>29558913
>This is stuff I still do periodically so dont know the basics

Dont KNOCK the basics.
>>

>>Use short, light strokes for lines, instead of using hard, long strokes.
>I read that the hand has more time to make a mistake and make a line look shitty if you're trying too hard and you're drawing one continuous line. Drawing in short bursts of strokes really has helped me get straighter lines.
It's lazy and it shows. You get faster and more lone control and confidence learning to do things in broader strokes.

>>Have fun, don't treat it as a chore
>If I don't feel like practice, I won't force myself.
You're probably misinterpreting that. You should practice as you draw what you want for fun. You learn things faster that way. Though if you want everything to stick you need to keep doing it, even if you don't feel like it.

>Am I at least on the right path to getting somewhere?
Yes, if you keep learning and analyzing just as you did with this post with each drawing, you'll do great things, Anon. Assuming you're completely new to this, I'm very impressed with your observations. Most people starting out will ask to be spoonfed small observations like this that you can learn doing one 30-40 minute still life.
>>
>>29558913
>>29558812
>>29558783

Also let go of the idea of "being perfect" when you're in these bare beginnings of learning. You're going to be making a lot of mistakes and bad drawings. This is normal and necessary. Be loose with your drawings and make observations.

>>29558984
>Though if you want everything to stick you need to keep doing it, even if you don't feel like it.

Fucking this. Draw even when you dont' want to. I'm hardly motivated to draw but I do it anyway. If i don't want to draw at the beginning of a session I'll eventually get into it anyway and have fun.
>>
>>29558913
Thanks bud. I appreciate the video.

>>29558852
Ah, that's good then. I guess I'll try to practice my proportions and shapes more then too.

>>29558984
Ah.
So form the posts so far, I gather that short strokes aren't what I made them out to be. I will try to practice drawing longer strokes then and being mindful of proportions.

Also yeah, I'm new to this. I really just drew shitty stick figures fighting zombies in grade school and then I stopped drawing completely when I quit school in Middle School, as I did handwriting. I started completely with typing.

My handwriting was a sloppy ugly shitty mess on account of the aspergers(I am diagnosed), and it was illegible as fuck.

But strangely enough, I started using handwriting again when studying for my GED, and somehow, someway, my handwriting looks 100% better. It even looks kind of beautiful now. My grandparents and parents and my tutors keep telling me how nice it looks, and I don't know what I'm doing correctly that I didn't do when I was in school. Shits weird mang.

But I've been in a lot of draw threads, just reading through what artists say, because I find it interesting how humans who know what to do can just create pictures on a blank canvas, and I've picked up tidbits of knowledge here and there and applied logic to create my own.

>>29559027
Alrighty. I'll draw even when I don't want to.

I guess I'll just treat drawing as I do programming and math. I sometimes don't feel like math or programming, but I end up forcing myself to start them, and I end up studying/developing shit for hours on end that way.

I want to someday reach the point where I can draw fanart of stuff, but I'm a bit aways from that. I wanna draw some nice AiE stuff. Draw my waifu and such. And draw fantastical shit, like Anon fighting giant ass Minotaurs.

I've taken a liking to drawing swords. I keep on drawing em. I draw them even more than I do Anon stuff. Really helps me with lines.

Oh fuck me good, I just had a good idea.

I should make my own drawing blog someday. Just a static site, that I can use to serve as a repository for drawings I've done. That'd be a lot of fun.

Yes. Exactly. Drawing is a skill with many facets to it that require its own study and attention. I like to compare it to learning an instrument since most people get that analogy. It takes 10+ years to master an instrument, ESPECIALLY if you're having to learn music from scratch. This is why people spend their whole lives dedicated to learning art and illustration. Take it a day at a time, a month at a time, a year at a time. This will take time.

>>29559098
Just make a tumblr with a throw-away name so you can dump art and show people
>>
>>29559292
Nah. I'd rather not make a tumblr.
I mean I guess I could, it would get me more exposed, but I'd rather just do a drawing site like I did a writing site.

See, I like to have a lot of hobbies, and I like to try to intermix these hobbies together. I did so with writefagging and programming. I decided
>Hey, I should write more, but I don't have any place to store stories. So, why not make one?
I learned all about SQL tables, the Python Flask microframework, and I also learned some web design fundamentals, and how to use the bootstrap framework. I ended up making a pretty ok looking site with functionality for uploading, deleting, and editing stories. Pretty fucking fun and the end result was cool.

I'd love to do something similar for drawing, only I think this time I'll probably make it in Django, just because I want to try to do something different. And I might just make it a static site.

Maybe I could do both a Tumblr and a site.

But I'm getting ahead of myself, I think at this stage, that site is a far ways away, but maybe not. Maybe having a site to store my progress so I can look back on it will be beneficial and motivational to me.

Hey so, should I practice with pen, or with pencil? I like using pen because the lines look crisp.
>>
>>29559098
It's alright. I still write like I did when I was in 4th grade. People in highschool, even my teachers used to openly make fun of me for it like I was some kind of cripple. You only need to be able to draw an ellipse of varying degrees and one kind of straight line. For everything else you can turn around a piece of paper or use the shift click function in photoshop.

>find it interesting how humans who know what to do can just create pictures on a blank canvas
Yeah. The attitude really stems from childhood I've come to find. People who don't have a great lot in life and often daydream or play a lot of RPG's as a form of escapism seem to be some of the top artists I know now. At least the more creative ones. It's really cool how folk from that kind of background can use their tools to create entertainment for other people as well.

>>29559338
If you want, even though they're not as active anymore, Crimson Daggers, Permanoobs, and CA.org offer a place on their forums where you can have an "online sketchbook." You can drop stuff onto imgur an then onto your personal sketchbook. People will be able to see through it too and give some feedback. Can even look at some one the ones that have been there for years and see their progress for motivation, and the kind of feedback they got.

tfw I used tumblr as a host for my sketchbooks and deleted cringy stuff without thinking about it. Kind of regret it. I'll make one again if you make one, Anon.

Hey draw thread, I need to start using my graphics tablet but I can't make descions. Since I'm retarded, can someone decide for me if I should start with Krita or FireAlpaca? I've narrowed it down to those two.

Previously I used autodesk on a tablet device, so right now that program is the most familiar. I've used GIMP in the past but really I just need something for lineing and coloring with some nice paint and layer features. I'm most familiar with traditional art, especially charcoals, so a good blur tool would be nice too.

Both Krita and FireAlpaca seem more or less equal to me right now and I can't decide and don't want to have to switch again. Thanks.

tl:dr Krita or FireAlpaca?

That's interesting.
I actually do daydream a shit ton. I'm an aspie faggot, and I have bipolar, add, and depression, and I'm on the pills, and before treatment I used to literally dedicate hours a day to meditation to escaping to a surreal ass fantasy world. It was my way away from this place. Now I'm medicated, and I'm alot better off and happier, and I do it less, but it's still fun to get away from this world for a while.

I always got the coolest ideas for stories from my dreams and imagination, I wonder if I will do the same with my drawings once I get good enough.

That's really nice family. I love your use of the background for the shadow color. I only really see some anatomy issues. I made the body shorter while moving that back leg further to the back so it actually connects to the hips properly. I also brought out he lines where the shoulders would be to show off some anatomy. Crudely painted over but hopefully it helps.

>>29565183
Oh yeah that makes a lot of sense now. Even modeling off of real life can be tricky because sometimes what looks "right" in reality doesn't always look "appealing" when drawn out. Especially when stylizing something into a well-known cartoony style. And you are correct, adjusting the proportions was the issue.

So, what separates the drawfag improvement general from the draw thread? I already have a quick opinion formed from lurking moar, however I'd like to get the insight of some of the regulars on this thread.
>>
>>29575392
Well I've been in the Drawthread about 3 or 4 years vs the Improvement Thread which I've done for a year or so every so often, but the Draw Thread is for requests/deliveries and posting non-deliveries (although this is/was frowned upon) while this thread is for posting your drawings so you can receive critique. If you post in here without asking for advice or explaining it, it'll probably be ignored. I also started the weekly challenges and people seem to like that - plus it teaches them how to draw/paint with a limited palette.

tl'dr Drawthread: requests/deliveries/nondeliveries
Improvement thread: /ic/, advice, how to "_____", redlines, anything to improve their art

Alrighty cool. Yah, I got the feeling that this thread is more critique/improvement based. While lurking in the draw thread, I noticed that although there is the option to ask for critique, if the art isn't great, it will get insulted most of the time. I'm fine with people insulting you on 4chan, but if the insults have no critiques with them, it doesn't help anything. And on one occassion when one guy was called out on it, he just responded with "well this is 4chan, if you expect a circlejerk then leave". This thread definitely seems more valuable in my opinion as an improvement thread rather than the draw thread.
>>
>>29575464
>I'm fine with people insulting you on 4chan, but if the insults have no critiques with them, it doesn't help anything.
That's why we made this thread. I didn't invent it but I do run it... I think. There are very rarely "lol that's horrible kys" comments in this thread, and while I wouldn't call this a circle jerk, I'd say it's a bit of a dick-tug'n'twist.
>This thread definitely seems more valuable in my opinion as an improvement thread rather than the draw thread.
I'm glad you think so and I, of course, agree. The thing about circle jerks is that you post your art waiting for all the compliments and dicksuckings; we don't have that here though... mostly.
>>
>>29575488
>compliments and dicksuckings; we don't have that here though
Good. For the same reason that insults without critique don't help anything, compliments without critique don't help anything. Just saying "Your art is perfect /)" doesn't help, unless its a compliment structured like "You seriously improved the way your muzzle meets the bridge of the nose, good stuff".

I'll definitely try to be more active in this thread once my hell week of midterms is up.

are human mane6 allowed?

Bring 'em on. I can do humans fairly well, although if R's around they're better. Either way yes

I am working on smth. I haven't done something bigger in a while. Feels good to get the idea and work on it. I'll post it later and ask for help. It's something new for me so I might fuck up.

Oh that came out really well! I wasn't sure if the lipstick would work (I knew who you were going for) but I like it a lot.

So I produced this today.
Redlines on legs appreciated. I just couldn't find a good ref so went full trial and error.

Okay, I'm going to regret this, but what the fuck is wrong with her face or is it just me?
>>
>>29586593
Eyes might be a bit misplaced? I'm not too good with humans so I'm not sure if it's supposed to be like that or not. Looks good to me though
>>
>>29585852
I'll definetely take it to consideration. Not sure about arm that is behind though. Maybe I miss something but I think it's OK on mine but maybe I am wrong.

I think it's that I forgot to give her a jaw. Sometimes I forget body parts, but I'm totally open to crit
>>29586627
It's a difficult pose. There is a standing tutorial in the pony gallery though. It's the one with Berry Punch, but the arm you drew is way too high. You gotta trust me on that.

That feels better to me. Thanks again! You're awesum.
I also hope I want fuck this up. I've never rendered fire, and the light coming from it... Darn, my mind and ideas overcame my skills almost every time. But that is good. A lot of field to learn.
>>
>>29586790
I should have shortened the legs just a bit too but I'm glad you like this. Sometimes I go overboard even though I try my best to keep to the original style, you know?

Maybe I'll put some armor on it. Let's go full hard mode even if it's going to take me 2 months. Hell yes!
>>
>>29587620
Hey man, you wanna try and draw armor you do it. I can't draw armor for shit, but the last time I tried it was for a DND character in middle school. Feel free to update with it
