He's not entirely wrong. Studies have "proven" that light text on dark backgrounds can be easier on the eyes, but those studies aren't important. The important thing is that things like the Tomorrow theme and Blackle save a marginal amount of energy because of the dark colors.

Probably something to do with less white light entering the eye, so less strain on the retina. But more black means less light, so pupils dilate, letting more light in, so it kinda seems moot. Regardless, reading white text on dark backgrounds for more than a few minutes always makes my eyes ache.
