We have Darkest Hour to tide us over but although I prefer Darkest Hour there is a key difference between mc motivations in that Silver Smith is in it for Luna While Frosty Rime seems more interested in stoping Celestia.

If you're ifne with a much less serious tone then let your players choose. You could even make that the main mechanic, like your group gets contracted for various events and you have to look into what type of event it is and what the people hiring you are like, their interests in music and general personality. Then players choose a song they thinik best fits what they know about them, you judge if it was sufficient.

You want to start out with a series of meaningful choices, this gets the players invested.
Don't have to be anything serious, but it does have to have lasting effects.
Character creation is a good example o this, or if not that something like a choice of companions, or deciding on two very different areas to go to.
CYOA is a very delicate art. Even though I can't muster up the motivation to run right now I still find it very interesting to think about the mechanics of it.

In this case it looks like he could have restructured the opening to start in a bar or something, with the MC putting off going to his ship, potentially getting in a fight with another sailor that shows up later and turns out to be his superior or something. Then dump the flashback. More than enough opportunity to get the players settled into the character.

Or just go up to the boat and save it all for later.

Either way, I personally don't like substituting character creation for the initial first settling in the character steps. The same problem springs up for anyone that didn't participate.

There's all kinds of small situations you can throw at the MC in the first few posts (like the bar option you mentioned) to have the players impart their idea for characterization on them, or choices on smaller details that fit around them in the world.

I use everypony and anypony when it's just ponies in a group but I try to use everybody and anybody when there are multiple races in the group. I mean if you're traveling with a bunch of griffins they probably don't want to be called ponies, they're all proud and shit. Well I mean I assume they don't.

I'm catching up on An Historical Perspective.
I had kind of dropped at during the first thread because I found it to be slow and boring, but after meeting the king, everything becomes so interesting. There are revelations about your family and yourself, you become a guard, there's a great first fight, you summon an adorable tiny horse golem, you get important people to start trusting you, and there's a crazy mare who wets herself thinking of you because you're the only one who can touch her and make her feel things she likes. And I'm not even talking about sex.
I like the characters, the way they talk, the way they act. They have motivations, they have feelings, relationships and all. If I have one complaint to express at this point, it's that it lacks a clear general plot line. But it's easy to take a guess at what sort of things will happen in the near future.
I'm only on thread 3 but I think I'm hooked now, and I'm glad I got this far.

What you are mentioning is my favorite kind of character creation. I do not care what horse looks like. That does not change what horse is like as a person. I care what horse acts like.

Dirty Work is a good example. Character appearance was premade, so we didn't fight over ultimately inconsequential bullshit, but the personality was a blank cheque for whatever and we made the quirky mare that is Sharpie.
