1. I'm lazy. But 2. it's how I've always done things like that. It's just how my style is and it takes a lot of pressure off. I will go back any edit inconsistencies that come up.

As for pacing it can be difficult. If I'm having a pacing problem (either because I want to move on to a new part of the story or because I'm bored) I try to first be more descriptive. And if that isn't cutting it then I just take a break. Usually if I just let it sit for a while I will get new ideas on how to move the plot forward without it being rushed or contrived.
