What kinds of stories are most likely to get featured here?

I want to write feature-bait but I don't watch the feature box enough to know what kind of shit gets pushed in there.
>>
>>28271368

Dude, you don't even need to read the stories; you can just glance at the titles and descriptions. Takes thirty seconds a day, tops.

Anyway, your best bets for getting featured lie more in promoting than in content. Put your story in a bunch of relevant groups, enter it in some contest, like the Writeoff or F*** This Prompt, just generally get eyes on it.

But as far as content goes, fluffly SoL and comedy oneshots are both good choices, especially if you can find some catchy "Pony Verbs Noun" title to slap on them ("TD Punches Everything), or can otherwise describe a unique premise in the title itself ("Thorax is Secretly a Changeling").

Porn is another decent way to go, but to make the feature box there provoking a reaction is key. Try for a specific fetish, and push it far enough over the top that people will read it both to jack off to, and because their sickened by the premise. Hate-reading counts for heat, too!
>>
>>28271368
>shit gets pushed in there
youre on the right track. m/m gay clop is a safe bet

or just bandwagon onto whatever shit appears popular this week
>>
>>28271565
>>28271592
Good advice from both of you.

I'll just take a look at the large, trending groups and write a story catering to as I can without making it too disjointed or unfocused. EqG and Thorax are both huge right now, so I'll probably have Thorax in the EqG universe. A vomit-inducing premise, I know, but I think it'll attract upvotes like nobody's business. The one fic I wrote with Thorax that was intentionally a huge piece of shit is also my most viewed, so something that has Thorax and isn't completely terrible might have a chance.

Hopefully the Changeling bandwagon doesn't go kaput after this episode.
>>
>>28271658
>isn't completely terrible
Have you ever been on fimfiction? thats not even a prerequisite for being popular.
>>
>>28271744
I know, but I'd rather not try to push my luck too much. Fortuna hates me enough as it is.
>>
>>28271766
You can literally be shit and write what's in the meta, and that will get you in the box in no time.
>>
>>28272312
I'm just ripping off some ancient Greek comedy and switching a few roles (mostly gender roles) to make it more palatable to this audience. And so I have an excuse to make Thorax the main character.

The only thing I really have to be careful of is making sure I don't use any terribly hated ship. There will be plenty of ships just because that's the nature of this story that I'm ripping off, so I'm playing on popularity (Discord/Fluttershy) and taboos (Shining Armor/Twilight Sparkle).

Hopefully this cynical cash-in serves me well.
>>
>>28271592
>m/m gay clop is a safe bet
I barely ever see m/m stuff in the feature box except if some hugely popular fetish author writes it
I see m/f and f/f stuff way more often, especially if it contains either some very specific fetish or just loads of fetishes
I'd say the best way to whore yourself out is writing fluffy SoL
>>
Would a story set in a canon alternate timeline need the AU tag?
>>
>>28274834
Depends on the intensity of the alternate element. What are we talking about?
>>
>>28274834
I'd say yes, if you're exploring a might have been that couldn't possibly be in the main canon timeline.

I think it's AU even if a glimpse of it was shown in an episode, as long as it's not the main timeline.

Will you participate in this weekend's writeoff?

https://writeoff.me/event/56-Princess-Not-Included

You only need to write a story between 400 and 750 words.
>>
>>28275749
The theme is Princess not included?
>>
>>28276073
Yes.
So you can technically write about anything as long as it doesn't include a Princess.
>>
>>28275749
I'll be sitting out.
If I have to hammer out 750 words, they may as well be on one of the stories I'm currently writing.

I'll try to write for the short story rounds, though.
>>
>>28275749

I'm partway through an entry, but I think it's going to go way over 750 words once I've beaten it into shape.

If it does, I'll probably skip the writeoff and just submit it as a stand-alone on fimfiction, since I don't think this story will be one I can cut a lot of dead weight from.
>>
>>28275749

I'm 103 words over the maximum and I don't know what to cut. Fuck my life.

>>
>>28279436

My first two were both really good. My third and fourth didn't have any overarching plot. Haven't gotten any further, but I'm glad to see I haven't hit any lolsrandom crap yet.

How could a story have no connection to the theme? This is the easiest prompt I've seen, just write a story without any of the princesses. Or write a story about the princesses not doing something. How do you mess that up?
>>
>>28279802
El Taco Loco looks like pure "lolrandom". I mean, setting a story in the comics, okay. But then you rnadomly drop in Glimmer, who is getting pounded by some communist Russian beard, and who meets a siren who would have no means of getting in the story. I really can't figure something linked with the prompt.

I've also talked about SATISFACTION GUARANTEED. The theme is only tightly stuck in at the end, and doesn't really make sense to the story. I'd work just fine without it, and that's what's bugging me. Why enter a story in a competition if it doesn't even work around the theme?
>>
>>28279829
>Why enter a story in a competition if it doesn't even work around the theme
because you had a 600 word snippet of a story that never materialized from 6 years ago saved in a .txt file in a folder somewhere and decided to get at least some mileage out of it by entering it into a write off that had a vague premise and an eligible wordcount

>>
>>28284891

It sounds like the problem is authors trying to write stories that require significant headcanon or explanation. If you not YOU, but, you know, "you" can't tell your story in 750 words, saying "well, there's a word limit for the contest" doesn't make it any better. You should be trying to tell a different story then - one that you can communicate satisfactorily within that limit.

Comedy/SoL oneshots, something relating to this week's episode, Proper Noun Verbs Article Common Noun, "flavors of the month" (five score, the Twilight peach stories, etc.) a sequel to a previously popular story you wrote, a controversial plot bound to ignite arguments (TCB, rape played for comedy, fix fic, etc.), or a creative and original idea that hasn't been done before are the usual candidates.

Since you can only mean the S5 finale ones, I'd say yes, as they all substantially deviate from the "main timeline" and so qualify for the AU tag.

What I find most baffling is this isn't even fetishy. There's two sentences of description, neither of them really relating to scat, followed by a lame song.

Aight.
The description looks very edgy and manages to leave very little to the imagination at the same time.
I feel like I can already tell what the whole plot is and I don't even need to start reading, nothing will surprise me.

Hoping to be wrong,
- Some asshole on the Internet
>>
>>28289722
What's a way to write such a description less edgy then? I mean in a story about Nightmare Rarity, it is going to be obvious what happens.
>>
>>28289677
What >>28289722 said is right, the description should really just be a hook for the story and lay out the general premise, not contain the entire plot
>>
>>28289806
So what's a way to rewrite it, it's not the entire plot at all, but it comes off as such?
>>
>>28289818
It's hard to say how exactly to rewrite without knowing the story, but I'd cut everything after the first sentence and write something based on your short description instead
>>
>>28289928
So the short description is fine, just the longer one is bad? What about:

>The mantle of nightmares has been taken up again, threatening to disrupt the balance of harmony in the land. Twilight Sparkle uncovers the long history of nightmare magic in Equestria, but when it comes to actually facing the threat, it's easier said than done. Especially when the new incarnation of the curse is none other than one of the ponies she holds most dear.

Does that sound any better? I don't really like pretending it's not obvious that Rarity's the villain, and the problem I have with that though, with the story, it's not just something about Twilight. It's a story about Rarity and Twilight's relationship. So I feel like in a way, even that is what happens, it's not the biggest part of the story. I mean, I guess it sounds better as a hook at least.

>>28289928
Not that anon, but I take a few issues with the description as well. Mainly, that it's too wordy. It's plagued by passive phrasing and unnecessary modifiers that deprive it of the sort of punch that a description needs to hook readers.

As for the content, I don't care for it. I feel like this'll be a wangst fest, like the ones typical of Luna and Spike fics, but with Rarity instead. The other anon called it edgy. I'm not one to use edgy as a pejorative, but this sounds edgy in the bad way, i.e. angsty. Angst is not entertaining.

>>
>>28290253
Alright, I fixed it as the description. I appreciate your honesty at least, even if it is a bit disheartening to hear. I'm trying to write it a little more than just "edgy nightmare stuff" by being more than that by writing about the character relationships, not just character turns evil and does evil things. But I can see how it can come off as the typical angsty stuff like you described, I'm just trying to avoid that. And I suppose it's difficult to say that without having it completely done.
>>
>>28290364
I don't mind evil characters doing evil things as long as it's fun and/or fascinating. What I mean is I don't want to read a story about "oh, woe is me, my friends don't shower me with their full and undivided attention, I better turn evil now". There are six trillion Luna fics about just that, and they all suck.

And this may just be my opinion, and even a bit of an aside, but "tragic" villains who whine over lame excuses annoy the hell out of me. Take Kylo Ren for example. He's a petulant child who makes Anakin Skywalker look outright stoic by comparison, yet we're supposed to take him seriously as an antagonist and at the same time sympathize with him for his plight. Not only is it an overdone trope, but it's also one that gets more and more ridiculous by the second. Darth Vader was a subtle example of this, and it worked well because it wasn't shoved in our faces to the detriment of Vader's credibility as a villain. If you have to do the whole tragic villain thing, at least take care not to make Nightmare Rarity not look like a whiny cunt.
>>
>>28290459

>>28290459
>to make Nightmare Rarity not look like a whiny cunt.

>>
>>28290459
Okay, I get what you mean exactly. And I thought by limiting it to a Rarity/Twilight relationship, I could cut down on the "woe is me, and try to write it more as an insecurity about being nothing but a tool for Twilight. Which, I felt from some things seen in the series, could be a completely valid thing to develop. I thought that was a much better thing to work with rather than "Waaah why won't my friends hang out with me." And all of this really came from the fact that I really didn't like the Nightmare Rarity comic and wanted to write something I enjoyed more.

And I actually liked Kylo Ren, I felt like he was one of the few good things to come from TFA.
>>
>>28290593
>And I thought by limiting it to a Rarity/Twilight relationship, I could cut down on the "woe is me, and try to write it more as an insecurity about being nothing but a tool for Twilight.
There's no reason for Rarity to have this sort of insecurity. Twilight has absolutely no practical reason to keep Rarity around, and the fact that she does shows that she really does care. That said, I could buy it if the whole "Nightmare" thing was some voice in her head whispering paranoia and doubt into her head, which would be really interesting if Rarity was the protagonist. Then you could veer your way into getting a villain protagonist, with enough depth and moral ambiguity to sate even the most pretentious horsefic reader if you do it well enough.

There are mental afflictions in the real world that do similar things. Perhaps get some inspiration from those.
>>
>>28290714
>That said, I could buy it if the whole "Nightmare" thing was some voice in her head whispering paranoia and doubt into her head, which would be really interesting if Rarity was the protagonist.
That actually is what's happening, what I was writing so far. And the story is split between Rarity and Twilight as focus. Perhaps I'll veer more into that as the story goes on, and have even more focus on Nightmare Rarity as a protagonist than intended.

>but the truth was it was a period where there were very little ponies who actually kept tract of history.
"tract" should be "track"
>When you’re finished, come back up here and continuing studying the history as I mentioned.
"continuing" should be "continue"
> Twilight’s vast knowledge in magic and spell casting compared to Rarity’s meager use of telepathy
"telepathy" should be "telekinesis"
>“It’s good to see you again Twilight.”
It should be "again, Twilight"
>“Just forget it Rarity.”
Again, "it, Rarity" instead of "it Rarity"
>Twilight turned around, walked away from Rarity.
"turned around, and walked away from Rarity"

And yeah, the ending feels kind of contrived, I don't feel like Twilight would be such a bitch in that particular sutiation

Pick one.
>>
>>28292068
The only reason the feature box is full of crap, is that there are few genuinely good stories. When anything remotely good drops a new chapter, it gets featured.

Or maybe you're one of these people who think everyone else's tastes is shit and their misunderstood magnum opus with 200 views deserves to be features more than the popular "overrated" stories?
>>
>>28291810
Thanks, I'll fix those up. And I'm trying to think of a better way to adjust that ending still, I admittedly was a bit tired while writing it and just wanted to have something done, figuring I can fix it up later if I get some thoughts.

Was there at least anything you liked about it, aside from that did it come off as okay?

The writing here is not particularly terrible and while it doesn't stand out as feature worthy or particularly good on it's own, it's a fairly sweet if uneventful scene.

Google says it's coming from https://www.fimfiction.net/story/341518/glimpses, and if you can get past the whole Nyx thing, the premise of the story is actually interesting.
If it weren't a Past Sins sequel which I don't particularly care about, I'd probably want to read that story.

So the description is actually mostly fine and I tried reading the first chapter.

Your writting is okay though the first impression of Sky Diamond getting repeatedly insulted for a thousand word is maybe laying it on a bit thick.

Celestia is pretty OOC, you write her incredibly naive and open ("Your name... isn't Bubblebrains, is it").
The show's Celestia is a thousand years old, wise, distant royal horse who doesn't get into random fights with guards on a regular basis.

A word about plot holes. I find the fact that somehow the general public doesn't know about Luna hard to explain in your story.
There is an entire guard that knows about her which mingle freely with the public, stained glass windows depicting Luna and half of the pony capital's royal castle is dedicated to her, but historians — who probably have a cutie mark in figuring out the past — never found out Luna existed?
You might say that the show has the same issues, but there we don't actually see any Lunar guards or similar before her return.

Overall the writing is not bad but I don't particularly enjoyed the argument scene, it lasted several thousand words in which the character interactions sounded off — the captain of the guard is not just being a hardass but borderline bad form and Sunbutt is happy to join in on the fun. I skipped ahead a little and skimmed through the rest, the Nightmare's return is done well though yours seems more interested in small time terrorism than heralding eternal night.
I think that the story has the potential to be okay for someone who likes the characters as it's otherwise fairly well written, it certainly deserves the feature box more than most of the random crap that gets in here, but it's not a shining example of originality, character interaction or airtight plot either.

>>28291650
The title will be a major part of "hooking" potential readers. As such, you're going to want something that piques interest while still giving the reader an idea, no matter how simple, of what the story's about.

>>28291686
Meme names usually only work for comedies, though.

>>28292068
Sturgeon's Law applies at all times. There've been plenty of good fics that have been featured.

>>28292531
Read it. When I eventually get around to finishing my fanfic review of it, it'll get a 5/10. My primary complaint with it is the fact it follows canon rather then doing carving out it's own plot. Any suspense and intrigue is sapped away as the reader slowly realizes this is just the pilot, but from a different POV.

This creates really bizarre tone shifts that make things unintentionally funny, such as NMM's big evil mindrape spell--something even Nebula's horrified by--being undone by Pinkie's song or Celestia going through decades of delirium and regency... just for the Pinklestia merch reference. It really makes things muddled. Is it a comedy fic or a more serious adventure? It can't quite seem to pick one and stick to it.

There's a lot of potentially cool things that could have been done--from Nebula slowly realizing NMM isn't going to change or get redeemed as NMM commits bigger and bigger atrocities, over to the Night Guard really dealing with their princess returning after so long--but it's really spoiled by the strict adherence to canon.

>>28293576
It was okay. Kinda basic.

Since you're the Terminator, just sadder, I'd like to take the opportunity to ask you something.
Why do you read fanfiction? I'm not saying that's anything that has to do with your 'tism, necessarily, but I'd like to hear your words.
What do you look for in a story?
What element of a story, roughly defined, would you say is the most important to you?
If you can recall an especially memorable scene or moment in a fic, what would that be?
What genres do you like the most?

I don't expect anything in-depth, but you've got my curiosity piqued.
Really, any of you could answer this if you felt like it. Would be interesting to see what people think.

>>28300167
>couldn't write a decent story to save my life
Storytelling/writing was one of my favourite things when growing up. When we got writing assignments that were supposed to be around two or four pages, I tended to show up with my own fantasy stories that could be somewhere between ten and twenty pages. Teachers must have hated that.
Read a lot too, basically all the time. Wasn't big into computers or vidya. Or being outside.

Now I'm just shit. I read barely enough to keep up with my studies, and write not one word more than I have to. I play tons of vidya, and I'm basically enslaved to my computer. Haven't read non-oneshot horsewords in months, and haven't written horsewords since I wrote greentext in 2013. Never published anything on FimFic.

What you guys would normally look for. Good grammar, good plot and interesting idea.

Everything, really. A good plot with shit grammar is shit, a bad plot with good grammar is also shit, and a meh plot with meh grammar is just meh.

>If you can recall an especially memorable scene or moment in a fic, what would that be?

Since I barely feel anything when reading, I don't have any. The question always fucked me up in high school, when the teacher asked "what is your favorite moment of the book/movie, anon?"

>Genres

AU, tending towards darker themes than the show. I generally don't like overly joyful and shiny stories, as there's nothing to be told, since everything goes as planned and ends well without anyone learning anything except that they're right and they're the good guy. That's why I cringe pretty much any time my little sister watches her generic "protagonist is angel" series.

I have a lot of respect for people who can write, draw, compose, or anything involving the arts, I've always wanted to be good at it, but anything I write or draw is invariably terrible. I guess I never had the motivation to actually spend enough time on it until I get better.

>Read a lot too, basically all the time. Wasn't big into computers or vidya. Or being outside.
Yep, I can relate. When I was small I'd spend all night reading when I was supposed to be sleeping, I was engrossed in La Comédie Humaine and Les Rougon-Macquart and any old book that I could find. And then I'd be tired all day but school is for scrubs anyways.

>Now I'm just shit. I read barely enough to keep up with my studies, and write not one word more than I have to. I play tons of vidya, and I'm basically enslaved to my computer. I know right? It's ridiculous the amount of time I waste on my computer doing literally nothing when literally anything else would be better.
I have the chance to have a lot of free time because I don't need to study much, and I'm wasting it. Lazyness is the worst of evils.

I find that hard to believe.
Aren't there aspects to the story aside from emotions, that you'll find interesting? A clever turn of phrase, an interesting idea, and the payoff of a plotline can all be memorable, can't they?

>I have a lot of respect for people who can write
Same here, but writing always seemed accessible to me. Even if I'm not a good writer, I've never found it hard to write. I'm shit in every other possible form of artistry though.
The area I view with "remote respect" is usually maths and the hard sciences. I got good grades in school (mostly, math was tanking a bit at the end), and I have an enormous respect for those fields, but I couldn't ever imagine working in them.

>La Comédie Humaine and Les Rougon-Macquart
Hah, it was almost always fantasy for me. I'm catching up on "classics" now, but as I said, I mostly only read academic stuff now.
One of the reasons I find it hard to "justify" reading longer horse-stories now. I could be reading things which are arguably more important. Then again I'm also supposed to read Diskworld, which is arguably equally pointless, and I don't care.

But yeah, enough blogging.

You want onions? Boy, I have so many of them, I'm practically giving them away.

>What do you look for in a story?
Something unique that I can lose myself in like a unique concept expanded through worldbuilding, or something quick and short in horseland that's disposable but cute.
>What element of a story, roughly defined, would you say is the most important to you?
All of it. Characters fall flat on a shit plot, and a great plot is ruined by shit characters. I can say the same for porn as well.
>If you can recall an especially memorable scene or moment in a fic, what would that be?
I know this seems patrician, but something that's really cool in lore, or something that shows me a different way of looking through the world in another character's eyes. Novelty is my jam.
>What genres do you like the most?
Sci-fi, Fantasy
>>
>>28300494
I don't find stories uninteresting at all. I just look at them from a general perspective instead of remembering a single element. I don't think a phrase, chapter or even idea is worth bothering about. I look at how the entirety is executed.

Am I late to the dick measuring contest?

Took me a while to realise the answer to most of the latter ones was to intersect the images and see what was left once you took away the common elements.

>Why do you read fanfiction?
Because I hate spending money and am too lazy to go to the library, so novels are out. It's the most convenient way to get entertainment--especially when relating to a show I like.

>look for in a story?
An interesting premise or idea that I think I'd enjoy.

>most important to you?
The plot. You can have so-so characterization, bad grammar/spelling, and check off all the cliches--but if the plot's entertaining, I'll still read it.

>what would that be?
The scene in Rafiki's Tales: Evening RIP where the Cult of the Broken Circle attacks the Crescent Moon Meerkat Colony. It's such an eerie and exciting scene as its told from the POV of the meerkats, as they first hear the mysterious sounds of digging in the dark, then SHTF, all because the skull of the cult leader's buried there.

>>
>>28314548
desu your fic is not especially good at the moment.

For one thing, it seems like you expect the reader to know these characters as well as they know the M6, which is not reasonable. They got so little screen time in EqG3 I doubt I could even match names to their pictures. You should spend more time establishing their individual personalities and group dynamics.

In reading the first chapter of a new fic, I'm usually still trying to decide whether it's worth sticking around for the full 50k or more. But the main point in your favor, the ghostly marching band, is described so matter-of-factly that it's downright boring. "Come look, there are ghosts outside." "Yep, those are indeed some ghosts." You could do a lot better job of selling this so that it catches the reader's interest.
>>
>>28314519

Jesus, fucking finally, somebody's telling what I did incorrectly!

Admittedly I also had doubts on how I described the ghostly marching band. The problem I came across with it was that, well, the Shadowbolts had seen much worse than that (Midnight sparkle). But, then again, that shouldn't exclude the fact that they should be more surprised.

I will find a way around that shit.

There's totally a market for written smut. I've done my research.

Thing is, you can't expect to get by if you're just writing for common fetishes. Or worse, just regular old sex. People won't pay to read that. There's little money to be earned here.
What you need to do is find a very specific niche, and them establish yourself as a leading name in that niche. You need to find the sweet spot where it's obscure enough to avoid being covered by porn and free material, but large enough for there still to be a market.
Christie Sims is the standard you should aim for. Tons of works in a few areas (most notably dinosaur smut), at a low page count (15 - 20 pages), and a modest price (2.5$ - 7.5$). Sims has even gotten to the frankly impressive place where you can buy audiobooks about some slut getting boned by a dinosaur.
Joyee Flynn is another person worth looking into, who also does more ordinary stuff than Sims, like M/M/M incest stories (admittedly with paranormal elements). Flynn also operates with a longer format.

Though I'll admit I've never self-published smut yet, I don't think it's hard to make some money off it. Work-intensive, but not hard.
>>
>>28316569
There is absolutely a market for that stuff. Turns out a lot of women are not really into porn but do appreciate the >nohooves equivalent of "clopfic with a plot". So there are a lot of romance novels that are heavy on the smut. I read a paranormal romance novel by accident once, and was surprised to see a very explicit sex scene about 3/4 of the way through

I'm surprised it took you that long. The last one I read that went 3/4 without a sex scene involved an incorporeal ghost who couldn't get it on until she got a body 2/3 of the way through the story.

Most will have a sex scene within the first half of the story, or at the very least an aborted attempt at one, and some will have it right in the first chapter.

Before I joined the ride, my main obsession was Paranormal Romance novels. Read around 300 of them in a single year before discovering pony.
>>
>>28317262
That's probably the way to do it. Tease the reader a bit and then have all the fucking right at the end after all the building. I really hate long clopfics that start out all lewd and shit, but then midway through they more or less drop the clop for several chapters, only occasionally bringing it back up for a forced "Oh wait I have to put sex in the story because it has Mature and Sex tags" scene to be shoved in with no build up.

That's both impressive and sad.

I have a question that is pertinent to the topic at hand.

How long do you think it's ideal to make the reader wait for sex?

I ask because I'm currently writing a love/lust fic where the whole story builds up to the two characters making love at the end and, as much as I love introspective tirades about characters coming to terms with their feelings, I wouldn't want to go on for too long before finally delivering the goods.

For the record, I'm also including a solo masturbation scene halfway through the story, as well as a steamy massage session near the end.
>>
Crosspost from the Writefag Guild thread.
>>28317283

Basically, I need critique on something I hammered out in a couple hours for some contest.

It's not the whole story, but the whole story isn't planned to be that long or very complex.
>>
>>28317303
It's all about buildup of sexual tension. Sexual tensions tends to be cumulative, and if you build up too much of it, the reader ends up frustrated and feeling blue-balled. The less intense the story is, the longer you can make the audience wait for that scene.

Unfortunately, it's really hard to tell when that point is and it's very subjective anyways so I'd need to read the story to be able to say.

You actually could read a ton of romance novels to get a sense of this. If you have a ton of time on your hands and low standards for literature (which you probably do on account of reading fanfiction), you can check out Lynsay Sands and Kerrelyn Sparks for low-tension stories with sex scenes and Christine Feehan and Kresley Cole for high-intensity stories.
>>
>>28317330
The story is somewhat interesting, but I feel you focus a bit too much on unimportant things. The entire second paragraph is spent listing off the components of the mc's uniform. Why not spend that time showing the dynamic between the lancemates? If they're going on a dangerous mission, make the reader care about the characters so the risk feels real.

Overall, it's not bad, but it could help to focus more on the characters, by the time the story is over, I can't say any of them really pop up to me save for a few traits that are mentioned rather than getting to know their personality.
>>
>>28317388
Focusing on unimportant things seems to be a recurring problem for me, it seems.

I'll definitely try to find a catalyst to make them interact with each other in ways that exemplify their characters. Maybe some off-screen mess hall incident for them to snicker about.

Not sure how it's Suicide Squid. Going off the synopsis:
>they aren't imprisoned
>the government's not pardoning them in exchange for services
>they're actually friends rather then distinct villains
I'd say the guy's an idiot who equited "villains who have to do good because of circumstances" with a recent movie with a basic plot that's similar.

Yes they are. The "Other" tag is used for canon characters who do not have a character tag. None of the EqG3 villains have a tag on Fimfiction.

If it is, you need to emphasis how shady her death is in the synopsis to let the reader know. One little phrase at the end isn't cutting it.

>>28317330
Left some comments. No idea why "lance" is so prominent, but if it's never explained, you might want to give one to the reader just so they're not left scratching their head as to why lances never actually appear in the story.

I want this story to turn out as best as I can, so I'll probably try to read more romance to use as reference, so I'll try to check those authors out.

I'd say my story is overall definitely low-intensity. Out of a projected 10 chapters, only the last chapter will be dedicated exclusively to hot dragon-on-pony sexy times. So, I'll do my best to make sure the preceding chapters are well worth the wait.

In the meantime, I'll procrastinate by working on the cover art.

Every writer should hate their own story. They can like the subject and maybe even fap to it if it's clop. But they must always hold themselves to a standard higher than themselves.

Didn't realize it was PNR. I got it from Tor's promotion for their new site, where they sent out to their mailing list a free ebook every week for 4-5 months. But the books came in a weird format where the covers didn't show up properly, so I picked what to read based only on the two-line descriptions in the emails. This one sounded like a slightly unusual urban fantasy, so I read it, but after I finished I checked the copyright page and saw it was published under the "Tor Romance" imprint.

So it turns out that you can like your own story, before you even submit it. Also, Knighty really needs to add a function to remove a vote after accidentally clicking it.

On a related note, it there any way to see if my story has been approved and queued up yet? It's been 3 hours and I'm hoping to have it out this afternoon.

Unless I misremember, he said they don't do that because it would mess up with the heat algorithm as well as other aspects of how the site ranks stories.

I mean, I see how that can be a problem in the first hours or even the first day a story goes up, but it'd hardly matter afterwards.

I suppose it'd be too much of a hassle to program it so you can't un-vote for a set window of time, so knighty and xaq would rather not bother.

I am not sure if the guy is serious or not. >the protagonist gets raped a lot
sadly much of the beginning has been retconned an rewritten so almost all of the rape has been removed.

but honestly I think youre thinking of LtD. thats the one where rape is funny and everyone gets raped because rape is hilarious

>>28323738
its a 2 million word HiE in which the totally average protagonist becomes more special snowflake as time progresses

Now. As a general story its got issues. content aside, the pacing and tone are all over the place. one chapter youre reading some hilarious orgy scene and the very next chapter is a genocide of puppies. plot arcs vary widely in quality, and while the MC isnt a stu, hes definitely a special snowflake

as an HiE its actually one of the better ones out there. its no OtPP or project sunflower for sure, and yeah its along the same lines as cultural artefacts or bad mondays except diaries isnt a blatant self insert like BM is.

Considering most HiEs involve some horsefucking douchebag living the dream, gettin rich and fuckin chicks while having a great time, diaries has a guy stuck in a shit situation, surrounded by people he dislikes for various reasons, cant really go home (technically he has and could but it would be pretty pointless)
Its also one of the very few horsefics I've seen where the MC shows actual growth as a person going from snarky emo teenager to somewhat maturing to where he is now over the span of years.

is it quality literature? fuck no but thats hard to come by in horsewords regardless. is it a moderately entertaining timesink? yes it is

I think what hurts me the most is that your core idea is actually pretty interesting.

The state of prolonged harmony in Equestria has brought Discord down to an unhealthy state and ultimately brought his demise, thus upsetting said balance and plunging existence into utter disarray is a very compelling concept that could be explored in depth. Twilight having to bring another draconequus into existence to keep the balance of harmony is a great way to resolve the core conflict of the story while also opening an interesting avenue for character development.

And you made a it into a crackfic.

well, the ponies in the story were supposed to be crazy/insane from the chaos properties. I mean, I don't know if that's crackship worthy, but I thought it fit in the over-all idea of said story.

Again, why did you think it was crackficy, when the story calls for the madness?

Like, how would you do it if you were writing this concept?
>>
>>28324844
you're right! I should just stick to writing incestuous smut instead of taking several days and time to write something meaningful. Maybe I really can't make a cohesive story, so I should just stick to easy porn and be done with it. I mean, I bet this story will pale to comparison the smut I make in half a day. Maybe I should just give up and go the easy way, because that's what it's supposed to be apparently.

Fuck This
>>
>>28324846
>the ponies in the story were supposed to be crazy/insane

Oh, no. That's not what makes it a crackfic, dear. It's the absolute nonchalance with which you bring up and then dismiss several things. Your portrayal of chaos is wildly different from the one shown when Discord broke loose in S2.

And seriously, cranking up the gore and sex like that is just cheap, it doesn't amount to anything.
>>
>>28317473
It's still in poor form. It's like a kind of shilling. Like/dislike's supposed to inform potential readers of the possible quality of the story. Of course the author's going to think there's some quality there. That's a give in.

>>28317488

If I was writing a "reality is breaking" story, I would first start with a baseline--normal slice of life-style events to show the reader what it's supposed to look like. Then, things gradually unravel. Starting with minor changes only astute readers will notice (BPs having the wrong colors, characterization getting exaggerated, etc.). This eventually escalates into major, obvious changes (Canterlot's at sea level, Twilight now has a second head, etc.). At or near the climax, linear progression breaks down and events from different points in the story, including those happening in a future chapter, occur simultaneously in one big clusterfuck.

Throughout it all, the protagonist, who is unaffected by the chaos, is working to undo the changes and save Equestria.

So it's a dark comedy mystery, which is both random and about day to day life, with graphic sex and gore set in an alternate universe.
In four thousand words.

Don't do this. It's akin to see an animal with warning coloration. An alarm is shrieking "Do not engage" as soon as I look at this.
Now, I'll excuse sex, gore and AU, if only because they're unavoidable given the content of the story. Random and Slice-of-Life is a contradiction. Never tag random unless another tag can suffice. And if it's a dark comedic mystery (which I doubt), then that cannot be SoL. Likewise, I'd object to most usages of the Gore+SoL combination, but that's a subject for another time.
The bottom line is that your cascade of tags is horrendous, and that you are either lying about what the story is, or have no idea how to tag. Description isn't much better.

>It was a gloriously sunny day in Equestria.

Flags immediately go up for me when a fic has the max tags or near the max. Doubly so if it has "conflicting tags" (Comedy + Dark, SoL + Adventure, Anthro + Anything, etc.).

If it was that crackfic from earlier, then you shouldn't be surprised. Crackfics almost always do abysmally--even those written by popular authors. Most people who got through the synopsis likely abandoned ship the second they read about Shining's penis machine gun and realized the tone the story was shooting for.

When the Snow Melts

http://www.fimfiction.net/story/272154/when-the-snow-melts
128k words [T] [Gore] [adventure] [human] [romance]

Troops slaughtered and thestrals on her tail, Celestia attempts to escape battle by jumping through a hastily created portal.

And winds up near some medieval chinese village. At least I assume its chinese. Its never outright stated, but theres bamboo, people with weird names and a whole lot of tea drinking and bowing going on. so I'm going with chinese.

Celestia gets found by some hill dwelling nutcase, dragged back to his hut and nursed back to health. Because thats so much more plausible than carving her up for stew. A pair of thestrals follow her through the portal and half the village gets slaughtered by the bat pony equivalent of tony montana before she creates another portal and returns to horseworld.

Its PoE, and honestly its not half bad. The humans were odd and it took me a while to piece together that they were probably chinese since its never outright stated anywhere in the fic. Its fairly colorful and descriptive and nothing jumped out to me as being too contrived or nutty. Theres a sequel that covers the shit going on in equestria during sunbutts stay on earth, but honestly I skipped that one and went straight for its sequel where sunbutt and starswirl drag chinese dude to horseland and he has all kinds of retarded adventures. which is honestly about as contrived as your typical human-turns-pony-in-ponyland gets.

If PoEs your thing then this is worth checking out. And maybe the sequels too if you're up for it.

>I just think its a little funny for this weeb to comment because all of these things were in his favorite animu

>>
>>28344305

They still didn't, because it's too cold up north to grow large quantities of tea or rice. It's like how continental Europe depends on cattle for food and the Mediterranean region depends on fish, as they did 600 and 1000 years ago.

>it sorta implies theres a fuckton to tea in china

There is, but not everywhere. Like there is a fuckton of wheat in Canada. Does that mean bread is THE ultimate food we have?

It's not really the tea that made me thought it was Japan, but the bowing, even in a small village. I'd think Japan is much more into conservative elder respecting than China.

>>
>>28346934
And now you need the 8th most popular story in the cache instead of only 7. And you need the 4th recently updated story in the cache instead of only 3. And in fact you need a lot more than that, since users could have any combination of tags filtered, so actually you need the top 7 by heat and the top 3 by updates for EVERY TAG, and now you're maintaining those caches on a per-tag basis instead of site-wide. Then do the same for the front-page "new stories", "recently updated", and "popular" lists.

Of course it could be done by anyone who's reasonably competent, but it's not nearly as trivial as you make it out to be.
>>
>>28347010

>>28347041
>And now you need the 8th most popular story in the cache instead of only 7. And you need the 4th recently updated story in the cache instead of only 3
Unless I'm gravely misunderstand how the site works, those are all already on the site and in order, so writing a "find the 10 hottest stories for this particular filter" algorithm is literally first week of high school CS material
But then again, I'm assuming that the site's back end was written by someone who actually knows how to program, so I might be wrong
>>
>>28347115
What makes you think they like Brits?

>Japan and Vietnam are the only Asian countries with a bright future.

Your shit has "Made in China" all over it, not "Made in Japan/Vietnam" except for jap electronics.

And when have I implied Japan, China or Korea are superior? I've only stated facts, that the three of them can't stand each other. I don't know how you've come to interpret it as "China and Korea is of rerevant stlonk"
>>
>>28347119
>those are all already on the site and in order
That is almost certainly not the case. Assuming, as you said, that the site's back end was written by someone who actually knows how to program, there should be a single cached list of the 7 hottest stories that is recomputed only infrequently. Otherwise every hit to the homepage (or at least every hit by a logged in user) requires recomputing the top 7 by heat.

>writing a "find the 10 hottest stories for this particular filter" algorithm is literally first week of high school CS material
You don't even need to write the algorithm, just the SQL query. The problem is that you can't really index by "heat" (since it depends on time, and on a lot of other factors too), so the query will require a table scan, on a table with 300,000 entries in it. Now, 300,000 isn't a ton, but it's a whole lot more than you want to be scanning on every pageview.

Imma let you two finish before making the new thread.
>>
>>28347252
Oh, you're saying they already have a list of stories sorted by heat? Sure, I don't know if that's exactly how it works, but it seems plausible.

The core of the problem is, inevitably some idiot is going to set a filter that hides all adventure, comedy, romance, and SoL, which covers nearly all the stories on the site. Now even if they keep around the top 50 by heat at all times, there are going to be times when less than 7 of those 50 match the idiot's filter, and now what do you show in the feature box? You can't just give them a half-empty front page, it would look like crap. And you can't recompute the list with arbitrary filters applied on every page view, it would be too slow. So you need some scheme to cache the top 50 by heat (and by publication date, and by update time, for the rest of the front page) for the N most recently used combinations of filters, or something like that.
>>
>>28347336

>You can't just give them a half-empty front page, it would look like crap

Actually, that'd be great. If you set so many filters that fimfiction can't find seven "hot" stories that match your criteria, it should populate the list as best it can, then fill in any blanks with "C'mon bud, get out of your bubble! Broaden your horizons! Try something new!" and then an option to unfilter a random filtered tag.
