I'm finally starting to get back into the art groove again. Drawing for quests eventually just became a chore, and I didn't want to turn it into a text quest, but I may end up doing that. With sheer amount of shit that I have to do, I just physically do not have enough time to draw five-six pictures within three hours.
I would list stuff off, but something tells me the majority of people here don't give a shit.
I guess something I should ask is, should I just do text, or try and push some of my equally important stuff out of the way to do art?
If the former, I will try and do some art for the more meaningful stuff, but walking through air vents isn't something I want to draw five times in a day.

It's actually kind of hard to answer that.
I think your art can be very important in some situations, mostly in character interactions, but other than I don't think we'd lose a lot if you were to not draw one pic out of two.
It also depends on the quest. I can hardly imagine Horse Quest without images. But I'd be ok if you decided to only draw for important stuff in Big Mares.
I'm aware that what I'm about to say is not really helpful, but ultimately, it's up to you.

Because allog with god, and OP magic powers, time travel is one thing, if a very careful approach isn't taken to it's mechanics, which can quickly becaome a harmfull source of whatthefuckery for the story. And it was basically what happened. We litterally when to the furture for the heck of it and came back like nothing. I didn't stay for the explaination which followed

Also, I think the characters only feel real to you. They're all smiles and cuddles and allow themselves to get sentimental at the first boop but then are ready to kill other pony without a second thought. Our host admitted she had to kill loonies several times but trusted us whithout a doubt (a random guy she found fainted on her doorstep) from the very beginning

That's entry level post-apoc lore, famalam. Unless things have changed, I'd even say that wall is awfully convinient, because it allow not to have to develop the lore about what's outside of it

Also if the goal you're talking about is "survive" or "escape the city", I think you can find an equally broad goal in litterally every quest

The characters are treating the MC special because he's the MC.

The worldbuilding is minimal and overly convenient things are overly convenient.

The goal is nothing special.

Recently, I've been seeing a couple of people praising the lore of quests and even qms saying they were gonna do some lore because they thought it could add to their quest

But I've come to think that lore desn't make a story better, and that horrible lore can be easily overlooked if the story is good

- Pokemon's lore and ecosystem is a laughable mess where a 14 y-o can catch the being that created the universe in a little ball. Nobody cares, they're to busy playing the game, only nerds care about the lore
- Overwatch made a lot of promo about the lore and backstory of the characters. Who cares? Blizzard Nerds. That's it
- The Dark Souls series is supposed to have great lore, but everybody know the appeal of the game is the bragging rights you get for finishing it. Nerds who care about Dark Souls lore are even occasionally laughed at in their own community for being nerds

Moral of the story: LORE as opposed to the STORYLINE, isn't important in any medium whatsoever. It's just bonus value for people who already enjoy the thing. I think this lore craze in cyoa started when people talked about Nips lore being retarded. That made a lot of QMs think that they coud do better than nips and started randomly adding explaination about things nobody would have cared about otherwise, instead of doing actual progression.
The demand for lore should come naturally if there things which need explainig regarding the organizations/history/geography which rule the world. The nine land is a fairly good pupil in that regard. One can say that fins lore is good or bad, but the introduction of the lore was never made at the expense of story as the charaters had to deal first hoof with the highest powers of the world

tl:dr lore is for nerds. Don't do lore for the purpose of lore but only if the story or the players demands it

I agree with this. A good story can be made within bad lore (It'll be harder, I admit, but it can be done) and a bad story is bad regardless of the lore in it. It does not remove, however, that lore and storyline can be enjoyed separately.

Entirely wrong. A story with strong worldbuilding will always be better than a story with weak worldbuilding.

As much as I support that a story shouldn't dump lore out of nowhere, reducing it to something strictly required by the story is retarded-- lore can be something aimed at by itself. By creating a rich world in which to tell stories, you find yourself narrating it in a more defined and lively world, which will help the writer and add enjoyment for the reader.

I never thought my CYOA was hot shit. In fact, I think quite the opposite. I think my quest is bottom of the barrel garbage. I've always disagreed with most praise I've gotten as well. Only thing I can think about is the worldbuilding thing. Try to develop it larger than you think the quest will need, make it work at a basic level-- not necesarily trade routes and economic systems, but do ask yourself how is that they feed themselves, what are their beliefs and heroes, anything you can think of that you feel is important to a culture.

I tried my hand at QMing earlier this year, diving head first into a half-arsed idea cobbled together using parts of ideas from past anons. Like most first-timer quests, it pretty much fell on its face. I find I have at least improved slightly in writing, but other than that...not much else really. I stopped a few months back because of RL stuff, but that wasn't the whole reason. I had hit an idea block. I couldn't think of a reasonable idea of what to do next. QMing ain't as easy as you would think.

I tried building up a secondary idea for a CYOA, involving medicine. But that idea stalled too because I couldn't even come up with ideas for the lore. Some ideas guy I turned out to be, huh?

I would like to personally thank: those two anons who single handedly kept my quest alive despite my weird timezone, the artist who drew in pencil, and that other player who came in at the end.
I hope my practice lewds were worth something, at least.

That's an assumption. Most of the currently running CYOAs are first timer quests. 10 out of 14 in fact going by >>27877771 unless I miss my mark. Out of those remaining 4, 2 of their 2 first time quests ran to their proper end, 1 still runs, and the last 1 died a virgin.

Which isn't to say you can't leave a failure and go on to make a successful quest ala JAD and Urban Survival, nor that no quests fall flat, just that your assumption that 'most' first-timer quests fall flat is wrong. I'd guess it's around 50-50 since the ones that fall flat usually die quickly, not 'most' by any means.

I feel Sacrifice should've been... anything but a quest. It just lasted too damn long and cut into Miracle abruptly. I honestly expected to last a week at most but it dragged on and on and on.
I need to learn how to write better prose in CYOA format, but having to open and close the faucet constantly just doesn't let me get in the mood, AND my usual prose doesn't really work for CYOAs.
I wish I was a better drawer. That one's kind of a given for the """"quality"""" of even my pixel art, which is the less shit.
I still haven't gotten into the habit of doublechecking before pressing post, which generally doesn't really enter my usual writing (I am more of a constant edition kind of writer) and hence leaves me with errors in my post that I feel lower the quality of the quest as a whole.
I am bothered be people being seemingly uncapable of distinguishing lore and narration. What's complicated and weird about Miracle is the LORE. The moment-to-moment stuff, while definitely odd, is easy enough to understand.

I feel both my quests are absolute garbage at best. Even though people keep telling me that they play/read it, I have a hard time believing that.
Since I moved my update rate has been sporadic at best and I feel absolutely terrible about that. So terrible in fact, that it makes it hard for me to even get writing for a new session in the first place
I wish I wasn't stuck with the (probably just in my head I guess) image of being the absolute worst and nothing more but human garbage
Sometimes I wish my quests would get more art but when I do get art I feel absolutely terrible because someone wasted their precious time to make something for me

I just feel like because of missing that first period of hype at seeing a new quest, because of taking too long and giving lackluster encounters early on (because that was all I could think of at that time) I lost out on quite a few players that, if they had stuck around, would have made writing a little more enjoyable. Maybe easier, even. I won't lie, I took players' ideas for my own. Some of them were pretty good.

There's just something...rewarding about writing a story bit by bit and having everyone else pitch in on what the MC should do next. But because of my own personal flaws including the fact that I can't think of shit, I won't be putting my tripcode back on anytime soon. Unless I somehow get that lucky stroke of inspiration. Is it too late to say JAD was part of the reason I wanted to try QMing in the first place?

I will admit that Misty taking us in and the artifact are a tad too convenient. I have to wholeheartedly disagree that they are not good characters. Chance is a great MC and while Misty is less so I think just there mere character interactions are fun to play.

As for the lore, this post apoc city has been barred from the outside world by some magical forcefield. Some ponies are turning into nightmarish creatures and nobody is sure why. On top of that we know some mysterious force is actively trying to hunt us.

I feel I should also lay a few things out for you guys while we're still doing named confession thingies:
First off, I wanna thank everyone who's played my quests and kept with my slowish update speeds. You guys rock. Like seriously.
But yeah... I feel like my biggest issues with running is keeping consistent quality prompts. I know that just takes time and practice, tho.
Well, that and I feel like I lore dump a lot, and my oc characters have sorta bland personalities atm. Still working on that.
My biggest struggle with being a qm? Not always knowing how to improve myself, in art, writing and eventually music. I wanna be the best I can be for you guys, but I can't always see where I'm lacking, ya know?

Yeah, I know. I deleted the Entrapment and
11-54 folders on dropbox because it was talking up space and I didn't think anybody was using it. I originally had those up so people could look through the original .xcf files I used while running the quest and so people could download the pictures in a sort of gallery. At this point Anonpone gives you the ability to download all pictures in a .zip and has a gallery mode but if you really want me to put my Entrapment folder back up I can.

I've probably already confessed everything in the past, but sure.
A lot of the times when I run a CYOA, I get tired of it by like the halfway point and only continue out of obligation. I keep telling both you guys and myself that I'll try to pick up the pace so things don't drag unnecessarily, but I soon find myself unhappy with the amount of choices that that inhibits, and I quickly go back to the old pace.
Furthermore, I'm finding it harder to run CYOA's in general just because I'm so sick of the meticulous yet lazy effort required to make sprites and the glacially slow pace of making pretty drawings. If money weren't so tight, I'd bite the bullet and just get a tablet, promptly ostracizing the few people that enjoy the poorly-written and minimalistically-drawn shit that I produce.
Basically, I feel like I'm my own worst enemy as a QM, and I don't know how to kick my own ass, so it seems to me like I just never improve at anything.

I'm not sure what to confess and it's probably too late to really get any notice. I'm well aware that my quests have never been of the highest quality, but I really want to improve them. But no one ever gives me much useful feedback. Last thread I got some stuff about pacing the current situation, which was great, but it's like the only time that's ever happened.

I'm not entirely sure what I should or could do. I think pacing is my biggest issue. Caracole and Vamp have both had issues with stalling while interest wanes.

I know I don't make very memorable characters. Nearly all of the Characters in Vamp that people got attached to were not made by me.

I have no idea how exactly to fix any of these issues. I'm sure there are other issues I just don't see, and there's no way I could fix those.

From a more confessional point: I can tell that my own interest in Vamp is fading. I refuse to leave it unfinished, and I will see it through. But I know at some point I will not want to. I haven't reached that point yet, but I hope I can finish the quest before I reach it.

Trying to start with a set notion and trying to tweak it works for some things, but not for some of what you're doing. Instead, try a more basic approach, like forming 5 ideals about behavior and motivation and building from there, instead of a pre-packaged archetype. That way, you'll have more of what you put into the character like little details or niche behaviors that you'll keep in mind when writing the character.

I started Unique chiefly because I wanted to break my writers block. Just run a simple silly little quest without thinking to just pump out words for once. Now it's gotten worst to the point that I no longer can think of any ideas. Before my problem was that I had ideas, but couldn't/wouldn't put it to paper. Now I can't think of a setting, a plot, a character, anything creative. I'm simply devoid of creativity and any higher thought nowadays. I've stopped reading literature too. The only thing that entertains me now is vapid shitposting on /int/ for a few minutes a day.

Now for the less depressing part: Unique and Stuck brought me a lot of joy really. I almost felt like I was the only person having fun when I ran Unique sometimes. It was always something to look forward too at the end of the day during a time in my life when things looked pretty grim. I hope someone else had even a fraction of the enjoyment I did. Are we still doing confessiony things?

I'm surprised by how well received Curse has been. I hijacked Bottle Cap on a whim, and expected it might last a couple of weeks at the most before interest was lost.

Since then, my players have been really understanding and supportive of all the times I've gone off without telling them and ran late at night and only for a couple hours. I really feel like I should try harder for them. You guys have been the best, so thank you.

Now for some actual confessing.
My entire quest is basically made on the spot, and after all this time I still rarely plan anything out. As such, I've seriously neglected the lore of Curse. Although I never meant for it to be a truly serious quest, I still feel like I should put in a serious effort and do a lot more with the story I've crafted out of what feels like duct tape and luck. Recently my players chose to go to a cave and I didn't even know what was going to be in it until two sessions later. Somehow my quest is one of the more popular ones on this board, and I really don't feel like I deserve that.
Furthermore, I know I've been told it's understandable before, but I still feel bad every time I have to pause or cancel a session. I know nobody expects me to run continuously, but I don't. I'm usually really slow at updates, and recently my schedule has been awful, with barely three sessions a week. And I know people have told me not to feel bad about it, but I still do.

As a player with Doxelesk appreciation for your quest, I could tell it was made up as we go along, but that's part of the fun of your quest, you do it well. I've been playing since the Hijacking, and at first, I just wanted to support a new QM with art I liked, but yours quickly became my favorite. Also don't feel bad damn it. I just want to know when you're going to run, and I do cause you always give a heads up if your not.

Time for literally who tier since it's been eight months now lolkillme

Confession: Blog tier - Usual QM maladies of depression and such make it hard to do things, though it's a step further for me from other issues that make doing pretty much anything (even playing games or the like) difficult to commit to . That's why Hayride was short as it was as I'd find it even harder to go for a long time without disappointing players - all the respect to the QMs that go on for tens to hundreds of thousands of words. Although, if I actually got started, I do have a 'commitment' thing that'd help with it to keep going - plus, CYOA has always been fun even when I was little and read the books and other anons helping to build a story is pretty great.

I love making characters; I probably could make a small army of pones (or otherwise) out of all the characters I've thought up. Even at the end of Runaway Hayride, people seemed to think that I do it well, so thanks for that!

On the flipside, I suck at setting descriptions and spontaneity. The latter is why I like to think about and plan things as best I can because if I try to dance too fast, I worry I'm going to make some critical error or just keep going downhill in quality - That part near the end of the mine in Hayride is an example of thinking purely on my feet. Planning and thinking too much, though, burns me out before I even start - I have probably six quest ideas in various states of preparedness (some I could probably start tomorrow with a little more tuning and not being stifled from other issues) - Pic related. I've tried to self-motivate by posting ideas in the thread when some anon asks the 'What CYOA do you want to run' question, but that doesn't really work.

Also, holy crap, do I write too much. Confessions specific to my quest in next post.

Actual quest stuff: Runaway Hayride was the result of binge-watching lots of westerns over a week or so, Buck Maverick was inspired from the show of his last name. Both he and Hay had a little bit of plot armor (it would have been a really long shot to have one of them die, but they could have been wounded depending on circumstances that never passed). I feel sad (although understand considering short quest and all) that Hay Wain doesn't get mentioned much as I'd totally waifu her if was like that myself (especially considering her luck in love </DEEPEST LORE>). Not sure if QMs could waifu their own characters though. I also appreciate anytime someone mentions/remembers her/me despite being too anxious to say so when it happens. Running Hayride helped me learn a lot, though, so if I ever do start something again, I think I'll be better equipped to handle things/make a more enjoyable product for players.

Characters are fun to explore and interact with, plus the QM allows us to do some stuff for shit and giggles. It's a lighthearted adventure type of thing, which is nice to see. Even if I don't play Curse that often, I encourage you to give it a shot.
