ITT: Fanfiction, reviews, recommendations, writing about events that killed hundreds, Shinkazura continues to rise the bar for whatthefuckery, Storms: How do They Work?, sci-fi stories that go hard on the sci, looking at pictures of ponies in dresses and trying to figure out what dresses look sexiest on them, not making progress, how short is too short for a one-shot, out of character characters acting even more out of character, Bleeding starts a fanfiction contest on exam week, unfulfilled dreams, deadfics that will probably stay dead, rewriting episodes, definitely not rigging a story to make it to the featured box, AU tag abuse, and writing fanfiction for a show you do not watch

Burnt out after reading that terrible wish-fulfillment self-insert fantasy? Still wondering if you should read that fic that is as 2.5 times as long as War and peace? Well, we've compiled the best of the worst in order to bring you our absolute average!

What you're "criticizing" right now is something that literally cannot be controlled by any human being or even a bot. It varies depending on the exact size of the thumbnail generated based on the ratio of the original picture, your screen resolution, your screen's pixel density, your browser, your zoom level, whether or not you have any 4chan addons and if so, which ones and with what settings, and the length of the ITT section.

That's the Val Roa one, right? You picked a shitty time to stop, then - the Val Roa arc was quite good, and books 7-8 have reasonably good pacing (similar to Urohringr).

But yeah, RD is still on the light side of the plane, as of chapter 180 of book 8. After Val Roa there's still a big-ass desert, a big-ass ocean (with lots of islands to visit), a big-ass continent, more ocean, and some more small islands before she reaches the edge. I'm not even sure she'll make it by the end of book 8. Hopefully skirts will cut stuff if needed to make the rest of the story fit in the last 4, instead of writing several million+ books in a row.
>>
>>27316824
No, ValRoa was in Yiffy, I remember having fun back then.

Unless my memory is failing me, I dropped around the point where RD was Wind Waking her way through several islands.

I dropped it right around the time she was trying to get a crystal shard from a sea serpent to access a whirlpool, or something like that.

Can't say I miss the story all that much, I think I had my money's worth with the first six books. I do miss making puns in the comment section, though.

If I want to write a fanfic which is not explicitly alternate universe, but changes a few things in the lore, how should I convey these changes to the readers? It would break the immersion if I just straight out explained it, but not being clear enough would confuse them.

>so strange to me that there's an unending mountain of HiE but PiE is completely ignored.
its not so strange when you take into account that HiE varies from 'self gratifying wish fulfillment' to 'edgetacular self gratifying wish fulfillment'
Theyre nearly all self inserts with the protagonist literally doing whatever the writer wishes to do.

PoE actually requires some thought and effort to figure out how ponies would react to a fish out of water scenario while still keeping close-to-canon personalities.
Thats a lot harder than just jumping on the flavor of the month bandwagon
>>
>>27320626

Shining Armor and Cadance would not be related to Twilight at all. I want to do this because I don't want to completely trash their characters, but I find their connection with Twilight (Royal Guard Captain brother? Foalsitter Princess?) a ridiculus asspull.

The story would be about a changeling-pony war. To do this, I would first deepen the impact of the Canterlot invasion with 9/11 and Pearl Harbor undertones. With the Mane 6 not appearing at the wedding, the changelings cause a lot more damage and kill Shining Armor. Also, Chrysalis would use his disguise, and drain Cadance - a much more logical choice if you want to siphon a strong power source.

The point is, I'm basically rewriting and expanding on A Canterlot Wedding from a more realistic political and military standpoint - as a start. I have been working on headcanons for a long time now that heavily deviate from the post-S2 canon.

>>27320705

Okay, I have a question.

Say I write a romance story about two characters getting together. The story would explore them getting to know each other more, feelings, talking about feelings, going on a first date, even more feelings, and would eventually conclude with them having sex.

I know I'd have to tag it "Mature" and "sex", but the actual sex scene(s?) wouldn't happen until the last third of the story at the earliest. I'm sure it'd be frustrating for some readers who cam wanting a clopfic and had to sit through a whole portion of comfy, slice of life, couple fluff before getting to the action.

Any suggestions?
>>
>>27321279
Is sex tag a genre tag or a trigger warning tag? If it's the former, you don't have to use it.
>>
It should probably be obvious from the description that it's not a clopfic. If you want to be extra sure, put the actual words "not a clopfic" in there at the end somewhere, and/or hang around in the comment section to shut down anyone who asks "where's the clop".

>>27321296
Trigger warning. Sex/gore used to be part of the Everyone/Teen/Mature rating system instead of actual tags.
>>
>>27321279
If you just tag it Romance people will know this isn't a clopfic, even if it has sex.

Unless you really lay it on thick with SEX in the description, I think people know what to expect.
>>
>>27321279
I have a question as well. What two characters?
>>
>>27321279
If you're interested in writing a romance fic, there's no need to be explicit with the sex, is there? I'd just be vague and flowery and/or cut away before it gets too steamy, so you can skip the sex tag.

If you want to write sex, write a clopfic.

I mean, I don't know your aims, but if I'm reading comfy romance I don't need it to be explicit; but if I see the sex tag, I'll want to be into the smut before a couple thousand words go by.
>>
>>27321478
I, on the other hand, think emotional attachment to the characters makes sex scenes much better.
>>
>>27321296
>>27321306
>>27321334
>>27321478
>>27321488
Well, my aim was to have the romance slowly develop, and as the two characters get closer and closer, they eventually make the decision to have sex as an expression of their affection for each other. Their lovemaking would simply be another facet of their relationship.

>>
>>27321279
>>27321511

The general rule of thumb is that you need to tag a story based on the entirety of the expected content, even if it's not going to happen until much later. This is non-negotiable in one-shots, full stop. It SEEMS like it might be more of a grey area in extended chapter fics because of the sheer ratio of words that are relevant to the tag versus not - but sex, and gore for that matter, are unique content tags very specifically because people want to be able to filter by those topics whether they want to read a story or not. It's insulting to your readers to lead them through a dozen chapters of a T-rated fic, and then suddenly drop a violent gore bomb or a graphic smut scene on them, just as it's insulting to give a story those tags and never deliver on them. You're functionally lying to your readers about what to expect from the fic in the future. If you know for a fact there is going to be gore or sex at some point, even if it's at the end, you need to tag it as such from the outset.

Having said all that, I'm actually MORE likely to read and enjoy a fic with sex in it when it has proper buildup like you're suggesting, so by all means, do it. But yeah, if you know there's gonna be sex, tag it from the start.
>>
>>27321279
>>27323372
Maybe add a little note in the synopsis too.
>>
>>27323204
Yep.
>Don't post:
> * Sexual content involving human/anthro characters under the age of 18.
So CMC clopfics are A-OK, just as long as they aren't anthro CMC clopfics.

Rate, critism is always welcomed. I don't feel like having people on the website sugarcoating it.
>>
>>27324123
It seems to be in second person, so that's an instant dealbreaker for me, I simply can't follow a story where every "you did <something I never did>" acutely reminds me that this is, in fact, not real.

So I can't really comment on the story, but the cover already ticks me off a little.

>And who's to say in the coming days that those answers won't be revealed to the world as a dark storm casts over the royal throne.
You evoke a lot of dark mysterious pasts and power plays in your description, and then the "dark storms" and "fog of mystery" really sound horribly cliché, all that combined raises some flags in my head.

As for the title, I don't think it's particularly bad, it's hard to come up with a good title, but it sort of reinforces for me the idea that the way you formulate your sentences, and the expressions you use could maybe use some work.

Finally, please consider the fact that I have no idea what I'm talking about and that I did not even bother finishing the first chapter, so please feel free to ignore my ranting, sleep deprived ass.
Cheers,
anon.

Hey knighty, any progress on that FimFic app you blogged about half a year or so ago?

I find the Jota text editor really neat, I can change the color of the text to white on black in the day, and gray on black to not kill my eyes or prevent people looking over my shoulder.
Plus it saves the position automatically, so you never have to search where you were in a 10,000 word chapter, it's just way more convenient than reading in Chrome.

But compared to a real app, the whole process sucks completely.

I'm reading Lyra and Bon Bon and the Mares from S.M.I.L.E., looking to see if there are any good ideas in there I can use for my fic. It's pretty weird; the whole thing reads like a fanfic written for children, with some really interesting implications about the adventures of the Mane 6 if you consider it canon. And also a lot of ship teasing, because Lyra and Bon Bon are just such good friends.
>>
wow what a seeming waste of potential.
http://www.fimfiction.net/story/89791/how-my-little-brother-became-an-alicorn

this is another one for the 'interesting idea with terrible execution' file

A couple of ugh. brony siblings have a fight, the next day the younger one goes missing. days of searching go by without any leads. older brother watches his favorite cartoon to take his mind off things and sees a new member added to the cast- a godawful black and blue super badass alicorn who is annoying as fuck and the stuiest stu since lance greenfeld named blaze darkblade. Who BTW shares the name and appearance of little brothers shitty OC and sounds just like him.

oh and the fandom hates the little shit for good reason. older brother eventually learns how little brother got to where he is and follows along as yet another alicorn.

The interesting part of this steaming pile of shit is the fact that mlp is still airing and presumably everything they say and do is being aired. which means everything they say and do becomes canon, and thus becomes reality to anyone in equestria.

when finally dragged in front of luna and celestia, instead of explaining that theyre really a couple of human kids and he just came looking for his brother (thinking that would make for bad tv and piss off bronies) he spouts some bullshit about being C&Ls nephews from beyond the veil and some bullshit alicorn backstory. and so it is spoken on screen, it becomes reality, though he doesnt seem to realize thats the case just yet

AU tag + synopsis making things clear that it's a different wedding scenario.

I do wonder who the protag's supposed to be. Since the M6 have no reason to be there, it'd have to fall to Celestia or someone else in Canterlot.

>wanting a clopfic
The synopsis would shape their opinion of the story, and I'm assuming the synopsis wouldn't drop any real sexual suggestions, so I doubt anyone reading it would be shocked that it's following its synopsis.

>Any suggestions?
The most obvious is to just have an author's note in the first chapter explaining things ("While it is tagged Mature/Sex, those elements won't come into play until much later in the story."). Otherwise, you can tag it Teen until you get to the chapter with the sex and then retag it, although that does get into the "do you be honest with your readers when it comes to tags/synopsis or hide things to prevent spoilers" debate.

I guess what stands out to me is that this is what I assume a ninja turtles crossover, and yet the most tenuous connection appears to be that the Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo Da Vinci.

Also, aren't there 'four' ninja turtles? Five if you count Venus, but why would you Why is the writer only using three disciples for Luna? Is there going to be some sort of big reveal?

Episode teaser for a new episode is out, featuring a Disney-esque Glimglam song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bm948IDMjKI

Here's the synopsis:
Starlight Glimmer has a case of the holiday blues, so Twilight tries to help cure her by reading one of her favorite Hearth Warming's Eve stories, A Hearth's Warming Tale.

I secretly hope it will provide half as much worldbuilding as the first Hearth's Warming episode did.

kek. Guess Knightly didn't design the feature box code to work for stories with stupidly long titles.
>>
>>27339639

>>
>>27339651
So that it won't get slightly messed up when some idiot inevitably posts such a story and gets it featured?
>>
>>27339668
And how many stories will have such a long title? Only one has it in the current feature box.
>>
>>27339679
Yeah yeah, worse is better, etc, but I'm still going to laugh at him a little for writing shitty code and not cleaning it up. I looked in the dev tools and the description part has a hardcoded size, just like I thought it's 176px, in case you were wondering. Plus it turns out the switching between stories in the box is implemented in a kind of shitty and over-complicated way (using position:absolute and opaque backgrounds and reordering the divs to get the desired z-ordering, instead of just toggling display:none like a normal person).
>>
>>27339668
The title's just cut off, not messed up. What do you want?

The title isn't cut off at all. The title wrapped and pushed the bottom bar downward (because the description part didn't shrink like it should have), so there's no bottom margin. It looks a little odd but that's it. Apparently nobody but me even noticed.

I was writing a scene where the characters were playing Monopoly. Then I thought if it would be weird if they're using bills when Equestria only has coins.

>>
>>27342707

>>
>>27342707
Why would it be weird that a board game would have fake money? I could see if Monopoly money were an exact copy of a real currency, but it's pretty clearly fake and unrelated. I don't see why there'd be a big question over a game using printed "money" despite it not being used in-universe.

In S1, Applejack wanted to go to the Gala to earn enough BITS to replace the barn roof, Big Mac's plow and Granny Smith's hip.

In Magic Duel, Trixie gave a small bag full of bits to a shop clerk to purchase the Alicorn Amulet. After seeing the money, the clerk sold her the amulet despite saying it's "far too dangerous" just a second ago.

In Daring Don't, Daring Do was about to buy a magical ring back from Dr. Caballero before Ahuizotl appeared to take the ring from him.

On a side note, in Magical Mystery Cure, Fluttershy paid Cherry Berry silver bits to fly the balloon, and in Leap of Faith, that pony acting as a shill for Flim Flam Brothers gave Applejack a huge, hoof-sized bit coin. Just thought it was interesting.

Since bits in every other episode were gold, it's pretty safe their 2D bit assets are gold, and of specific size. Somone delibarately changed their colour, and someone (most likely the storyboard artist) made that coin big on purpose.

This was just Decanus something making a cover for his fic. Then, an anon made a parody, which is the thing I posted. It's quite recent, one month or two.
>>
>>27359776
I know, I've been there. I still don't get it. How is it any way related to anything posted in this thread, ever?
>>
>>27359785
Original cover had an eagle holding an axe. I just got why the bird had some Axe right now.

FOE is self-explanatory

Futaloo get, with German helmet, like the ponies on the cover

And finally, One Direction because "One victory" looked like "One direction" on the first cover.
>>
>>27359806
So it's just making fun of the cover. Why did he plaster "fimfiction thread" over it?

I'm pretty sure bits are a fiat currency, otherwise the diamon dogs would rule the world by owning all the precious metals.

As long as the value of the coin is higher than the value of the metal, you're good.

What's up with this show showing Glimmer being right and evil for it?
I mean, look at the latest fucking episode. She WAS right, a better future requires hard work. But instead of telling her to chill off and take it easy from time to time, everyone takes the opposite extremist position, only theirs is treated as 100% pure.
It pisses me off when people shows children two extremist positions as if there was no middle ground.
Luna's song was 10/10 tho.
>>
>>27366618
>It pisses me off when people shows children two extremist positions as if there was no middle ground.

Well, it's basically a kid's show. MLP isn't even the worse when it comes to black and white mentality.
>>
>>27366618
Oh for fuck's sake, now you're making me watch the episode just to argue with you? I just want to play video games, man.
Give me a second.
>>
>>27366618
But what if you're actually wrong and there's more to life than killing yourself at work?
>>
>>27366618
>Glimmer being right and evil for it?

It's aimed at children, millennials and "brony" NEETs who think hard work is nothing, and genuinely believe in "believe in yourself and you can do anything", so I'd make a lot of sense to them at least.
>>
>>27366673
What is there more?

Someone who kills himself at primary, high school and university is definitely going to be better off than someone slacking off all day like the cicada in Lafontaine's story. I think it's not that much about work not being all in life, but about the show not showing some middle ground between stupid fun and hard work.

Also, am I the only one thinking Spike's remark about Starlight's past was extremely distasteful and misplaced for what happened not that long before?

>Someone who kills himself at primary, high school and university is definitely going to be better off than someone slacking off all day like the cicada in Lafontaine's story.
"Killing yourself" is not a middle ground, those are your words, not mine.
You should work hard, hard enough to achieve what you want, but the purpose of work is to allow you to live the life you want, not to waste it away.

>I think it's not that much about work not being all in life, but about the show not showing some middle ground between stupid fun and hard work.
Work is good, nobody's denying that. But when you get to the point where you can't even have fun anymore AND you have to ruin the fun for other people, that's already several lines you've crossed.

Glimmer is being borderline evil here, taking toys from children and trying to impose her vision on everyone. There is no defending her.

The show isn't advocating for everyone slacking off, and it's not saying that hard work is bad, it's saying that if all you know is work, you're hurting yourself and others.
>>
>>27366729
She was, in other words, wrong.
>>
>>27366698
>Also, am I the only one thinking Spike's remark about Starlight's past was extremely distasteful and misplaced for what happened not that long before?
He was just being a sarcastic voice of reason. You know, the character he used to be.
Even Starlight Glimmer jokes about it at this point. We don't know how much time passed between S5 and S6.
>>
>>27366730

>>27366734
>The show isn't advocating for everyone slacking off

Glimmer was basically telling everyone to work hard instead of blindly believing in friendship, and was shown to be wrong because of that.
>>
>>27366734
>There is no defending her.
This.
She throws an absolute shitfit over this single day, going to illegal and immoral extremes. I cannot wrap my head around anyone seeing her actions as right, unless they totally misunderstood what they were seeing.

>it's saying that if all you know is work, you're hurting yourself and others.
Perhaps more dire, she wasn't just disapproving of this one day of merry respite, she was making it go away. Forcing her will upon others.

>>27366748
You really didn't get what I said about the quip, did you?
>>
>>27366746
I don't really know if she would joke about it. It's about the same as Celestia or Luna joking about NMM, and we all know how well this has gone with Unsufferable.

Luna was in extreme grief and remorse over her time as NMM, even though she never succeeded in her plans. Why wouldn't Starlight be the same when she technically did succeed in making a whole population cutie mark free and almost fucked all of the known world by time traveling?
>>
>>27366763
Think about it in human terms then

>Why would he kill all those people for his faith?
>Says the guy who sequestrated twenty people and brainwashed them

How would the guy react?
>>
>>27366748
>Glimmer was basically telling everyone to work hard instead of blindly believing in friendship
She wasn't just telling people to work hard, she was telling them to work hard 24/7 and never take a day off for fun and relaxation. And then there's the fact that she tried to use magic to force her views on everyone in the country.
>>
>>27366770
That's a false equivalency right there. NMM is a bad subject for Celestia and Luna because it reminds them of Luna's jealousy, their fight and Celestia banishing her to the moon for a thousand years.
Starlight just had a childhood grudge.
>>
>Complain about binary morality
>Everyone goes into an argument, most showcasing binary morality
>>
>>27366794
>Starlight just had a childhood grudge.

Which almost destroyed Equestria and led to the sequestration and brainwashing of at least a dozen ponies, all witnessed by the guy who is joking.
>>
>>27366782
I didn't bother to write it, but this exactly;
>>
>>27366776
No, Anon. Again, think about it in terms of narrative and continuity.
>>
>>27366849
Well, they could have found a better way to tell about her past than having Spike joke about it.
>>
>>27366802
And? None of that affects her relationship with the only family member she has, just her, she only wronged a handful of ponies, and all her actions were reversible. You can't compare this to Nightmare Moon, who almost killed/banished her own sister out of jealousy and took over Equestria to rule it with an iron hoof.
>>
>>27366865
What, having her joke about it? That already happened. You're blowing this way out of proportion.
>>

>>27366892
Wouldn't it still be pretty traumatizing knowing you would have basically fucked up all of Equestria hadn't a pony convinced you?

However, Dyadic Anima theory, when applied to the propagation of spells, produces results that are contradictory to observations. In addition, while some attempts have been made to resolve the Alicorn Paradoxes [5] as well as to explain the phenomenon of Virtue Casting [6], Dyadic Anima has been shown to be insufficient to explain the full extent of the relevant spells. In particular, the theory of Dyadic Anima is only able to partially close the anima gap for the Celestial Paradox and the Ascension Paradox [5], and experimental results for the Potency increase in Virtue Casting have been shown to exceed the values predicted by Cadenza's theory [6][7].

Aww yeah. I was just thinking about the whole "fictional paper" idea the other day.

Are you writing this in TeX?

By the way, I think you should un-capitalize most or all of those terms. In my field, at least, jargon like that is never capitalized.
>>
>>27372722

I'm using Microsoft Word because I'm lazy and don't feel like finding a good TeX IDE. And thanks for the advice on capitalization; looking over some of the papers for my actual research, I can see that capitalization is quite rare.

Also, I keep writing one or two lines of this fic and then abandoning it for a month or two because I get overwhelmed trying to work the math out. At the rate I'm going, I'll probably get my Ph.D. before I finish this.

Capitalizing for Emphasis, like you sometimes see in Old-Timey Documents, is pretty cool. But that's not what's going on in the excerpt anon posted.

>>27372890
>I'm using Microsoft Word because I'm lazy and don't feel like finding a good TeX IDE.
You ARE in a Ph.D program, right? How did you manage to go this long without needing TeX at one point or another? Hell, I was texing all my homework by the third year of undergrad.

>I get overwhelmed trying to work the math out
What's the math for? Is this still the "non-LOS teleport" paper?

What sorts of figures are you planning on including? Cause I'm over here getting all excited at the thought of a paper full of PDEs, graphs, and crazy magic circle / spell structure diagrams of some sort.

By the way, I recently stumbled across this (non-pony) story that features "magic as a hard science": https://qntm.org/ra
The story gets pretty weird and confusing after a while (the author tries to give just the right amount of information for the reader to figure out what's going on, but frequently errs on the side of too little), but does an all right job of worldbuilding magic as a branch of science and magic-based engineering.
>>
>>27372923
Whenever you capitalize a word, it loses its Banality; the reader suddenly realizes that it is of the Profound, and must be pondered.
>>
>>27373116
I'm only a first year, and haven't had to do more than make one set of slides in LaTeX - didn't like the IDE that came prepackaged with whatever I downloaded.

Back in undergrad, I only had to use LaTeX once, and I had some crappy default text editor that I hated.

The paper I'm trying to write is proving that Friendship is Magic, essentially. I'm trying to make it so that the world itself tends towards friendship, so that spells cast between those with strong bonds are stronger than those cast alone.

The way I've set it up is that the aether, which is the medium that magic propagates through, is believed to be some inert thing in the same way that the electromagnetic aether is supposed to be inert. Then, shortly after A Canterlot Wedding, Cadance publishes a paper which basically shows that spells get stronger because of love, and proposes that the aether somehow reacts to the love shared between casters to make the spell stronger.

The paper I'm writing is by Twilight, which shows that Cadance's model is flawed and also that any strong emotional bond can amplify a spell. The math is just various equations and models of magic trying to describe Cadance's model, why it fails, and then Twilight's model.

I'm still trying to figure out the magical system though. I'm think of cribbing off of quantum physics, with Cadance's model assuming that certain things are continuous and Twilight saying that it's actually discrete if you go small enough.

That being said, I'm currently focusing on another fic and desperately trying to get my actual research to work, so I'll probably have to stick this on the backburner for a while.

Also, thanks for the link, looks like it might have some good ideas.
>>
>>27373328
Just do what Warhammer 40,000 does and say that friendship is magic because the ponies believe that it's magic.
>>
>>27373348
I did think of doing something like that. From what I understand of 40k lore, the reason why it works for orks is because they are very magical creatures, and their belief acts as a focus for their magic. If I did it like that, I could write an interesting psychology paper about how belief increases a pony's ability to channel their own magic.

Unfortunately, I don't know the first thing about psychology, and have no idea how a paper like that would even work. Thus, a more physics-based approach, to reflect my engineering background.
>>
>>27373328
Wait, I'm confused. Are you or are you not the anon who wanted to write a paper on Twilight's discovery of a technique for non-line-of-sight teleportation?

Cadance does not strike me as an academic. I'd expect something more like a professor from Canterlot University (or CSGU, depending on exactly what sort of school you headcanon CSGU to be) who heard about ACW, talked to Cadance, and got Cadance & SA to cast some spells so he could gather experimental data.

Other than that, your plan sounds pretty good. Sounds like another way of phrasing it is: Cadance (or Prof. So-And-So) came up with some equations modeling this new phenomenon, and Twilight is presenting a more general model that also covers other types of emotions -- is that accurate?

Have you thought about how these emotion-related factors might tie in with Changeling magic / biology?
>>

The LOS thing was an abstract I crapped out one afternoon before I realized that trying to write something that specific would be both difficult and not a lot of fun.

Your summary is correct. Since I'm not a physicist, I'm taking a lot of inspiration from Einstein's photoelectric effect paper, including the overall structure of it (here's why the current thing fails, here's some previous work that implies a new model, here's the new model, here are some derivations using the new model). In this case, it would be wave model of light = Cadance's theory, quantum model of light = Twilight's theory. It probably won't be that creative, since I lack both the worldbuilding and physics/math skills to do this idea justice.

Also, I just like the idea of Cadance being a nerd. It fits with her comics characterization, and I could definitely see her writing a paper on this stuff given the type of analysis she was doing in high school.
>>
>>27373625
All right, sounds cool. As for the Cadance thing, I never actually got around to reading the comics, so I had no idea she was portrayed that way.

“Ah got real mad, once.”

Apple Bloom tilted her head toward him, immediately intrigued. Any time he stretched his vocabulary beyond two words it was for something of real significance. “Really? When?”

“When ma and pop passed on.” Mac closed his eyes and heaved a long, heavy sigh. “…It weren’t fair, Ah said. An’ it wasn’t. Everypony knew it wasn’t. But there weren’t nothin’ anypony could do about it either, an’ that just made me madder. Ah musta snapped a dozen apple trees right in half lookin’ for somethin’ to take it out on. Probably mighta hurt somepony if Ah’d been anywhere but here.”

Apple Bloom gulped slightly, her ears folding back against her head. “Y-yeah… Ah guess that’s a fair reason ta be mad…”

Macintosh shook his head and sighed again. “It passed eventually, and afterward, well… compared ta that, nothin’ else seemed worth gettin’ mad over. Been as mad as mad could be fer a real damn good reason an’ it didn’t fix nothin’. Didn’t change nothin’. The world was just the way it was before. Minus a few apple trees. An’ if gettin’ angry didn’t help then, of all times… it weren’t ever gonna help anythang.”

That was really fun to read. I loved the Monopoly reveal.
On the other hand, a few of Spike's lines seems out of character. I know he's supposed to be five years older, but "Sounds delightful"?
Also, I've noticed a little problem with your dialogues. The narrator's interjecting way too often.

The biggest problem I have is everything seems to be happening way too quickly. The readers don't have a reason to believe they'd be interested in each other. You could make them have more slice of lifey moments like the Monopoly game and two or three chapters before this one to give them enough time to interact and strengthen their bond.
Of course, this is entirely subjective, and I don't really know if you want this to be a story about them falling in love, them learning to be a couple, or them struggling in an already established relationship.

All in all, though, I can't wait for more.

I also left a little comment behind.

https://www.fimfiction.net/story/76290/celestia-sleeps-in

A slow, careful and detailed first contact story in 150,000 words.
It starts in Equestria, where Sunbutt is tired of being the only pony who can not sleep in until the Sun genty awakes her. Conveniently, nobody else has the power to raise the sun, so she decides to go take a nap and enjoy the dawn on a foreign world just once.
And that's when it turns into a PiE situation. From then on it focuses on the two main characters, every interaction is well though out and the sense of adventure is incredible.

I'd greatly recommend it, it's one of the few stories that kept me awake until 5 AM because I just needed to see one more chapter, I finished it with my eyes burning and my phone battery at 4%. Twas worth it.
>>
>>27376113
until you get to the sequel, which is now dead because biscuit is more interested in collegepone
>>
>>27376135
What's collegepone?
Is the sequel worth reading on its own or should I just leave it here?
>>
>>27376141
I forget the name of it. its another PoE where pony goes to human college. its apparently cute and fluffy, and I'd be all over it if anyone else was writing it.

The sequel is more of the same, except with the roles reversed. The old guy and a coast guard chick wind up in ponyland. It undeniably ranks in the top 10 of HiEs, but hasnt updated in 6 months because of collegepone. I'd say its worth getting into, just dont expect a resolution anytime soon
>>
>>27376113

It is a good story. It could use a few plotlines less though. (Trixie)

The funny thing is, despite ho
w complicated and thought-out the whole story is, the premise feels a little ridiculous. Celestia travels to another planet in another solar system, just so she be awakened by the dawn... Not to mention, the one thing this fic doesn't explain is how the whole "raising the sun" works. Does the sun stand still every time until Celestia pulls it up to the horizon? If not, why does she have to manually raise it every time?
>>
>>27376187
Oh yeah I found the collegepone thing.
So it looks like a sex thing, disappointing for an author who spent an entire chapter on how all HiE are cheap wish-fullfillment excuses for some pony on human action, and he wanted to do something different.
But I can give him the benefit of the doubt, I suppose.

>>27376196
Yeah, the whole intro was a little forced, lots of suspension of disbelief going on, but it's at least somewhat more orginal than "Twily stumbled on Earth by chance because magic".

The trixie plot went absolutely nowhere, so I'm assuming it comes up again in the sequel.

>Does the sun stand still every time until Celestia pulls it up to the horizon? If not, why does she have to manually raise it every time?
The whole moving the Sun thing will have to stay unexplained I'm afraid..

There was a mention of Luna hapilly rearranging the stars around from time to time, a couple paragraph after admitting that Sol, our Sun, is part of the equestrian night sky.
I can't imagine what would hapenned if our Sun suddendly moved a couple thousand light years to the side, but it probably wouldn't be good.
>>
>>27376227

Yeah.

As the other guy said, the sequel is the same quality, but it incomplete and being really slowly written, You can still read it, there is not much suspense currently.
>>
>>27376227
>The trixie plot
unless I'm getting OtPP confucsed with another fic, I really dont get the trixie d plot.

shes in prison (but allowed visitors), then shes like lunas personal student, then shes essentially on suicide watch, then dark magic, then some other shit
IIRC she was critical in helping get the original portal up and running (though honestly any random OC could have replaced her), but I really dont get why she still pops up eventually. I assume shes going to have something plot related to do later, but for now she pops up randomly and her shit is incongruous with the rest of the story
>>
>>27376292
>I really dont get why she still pops up eventually

occasionally

Then all became a chaos of hoof and tooth and wing and wood. Sky thrashed at the beasts and snatched himself away from their snapping jaws. The Wonderbolts rushed from side to side, splitting the air with the crack of hoof on wood. At some point in the melee, one of the timberwolves sliced a shallow cut down Sky's left hock, but he scarcely felt it. The noxious breath of the creatures choked him, but their howls as he kicked and smashed at them provided a certain satisfaction.

And then they broke, rushing back to the safety of the forest in disarray. Only a scarce few timberwolves had survived to flee. Sky shouted in triumph at the sight, but Fleetfoot paid no heed. She dropped to the ground and immediately started scattering the remains of the broken timberwolves, possessed with an inexplicable urgency. “Get down here and help, you dumb city ponies,” she snarled at Sky and Soarin. “These'll form right back up into a timberwarg if you don't disperse them!”
>>
>>27376227
>So it looks like a sex thing
It's not a "sex thing". She's a college student, she occasionally writes about her sex life. It's tagged because it has to be, but it's not by any means a major focus of the story.
>>
>>27375144
I think most of the problems come from me getting too caught up in the story myself. Hopefully I'll be able to fix it during editing.

>a few of Spike's lines seems out of character.
The idea was that he's trying to act more cool and suave because he's with Starlight.

>Also, I've noticed a little problem with your dialogues. The narrator's interjecting way too often.
Yeah, I'm taking full blame for that. I guess I wanted to show how the character's are feeling/what they're thinking at that particular moment. I'll try to rearrange it a bit so it reads smoother.

>The biggest problem I have is everything seems to be happening way too quickly.
I want to address that issue in the story, actually. Starlight is infatuated with Spike, and has been for a while. Spike has some interest in her as well, enough to actually accept her spur of the moment confession.
What I want to explore is how they'll grow closer now that they're together, what being in a relationship means to each of them, and how they deal with their own insecurities for the sake of making each other happy. The very next chapter will be about them going in their first "date" and will spent most of that time with them talking about their feelings.

This is, of course, all leading up to the tender dragon/pony lovemaking at the end.

Anyway, thanks for reading. I'll do some edits and start outlining the other chapters.
>>
>>27377160
>The idea was that he's trying to act more cool and suave because he's with Starlight.
I see, makes sense. You should say so in the story, though.

Read any good fic lately?
>>
>>27377931
no. but I just dropped http://www.fimfiction.net/story/126885/just-horsing-around
The description should have been enough, but I boldly went forward anyway.

By chapter 4 we have literally everyone talking like a faggot ("Oh dear me", "Marvelous", and "I do say that is quite magnificent") I dont remember who said any of those, because they all talk like that. Literally everyone likes the stuish alien protagonist (who is an identical copy of an ancient hero that was banging luna), Celestia and luna both expect great things from him (its practically hero of prophecy cliche), and its a subtle self insert.

I could have actually lived with all that. But theres one little piece of fandom autism that I simply cannot abide. Seemingly every third sentence out of RDs mouth contains (number) percent (blank)

I can laugh that shit off once. I can ignore a second iteration of it. I fucking lost count of the occurrences by chapter 4. dropped and downboated

My guess is it would lead down a slippery slope. Found a pretty good first-contact HiE that I hadn't seen before:

Random human from shitty near-future Earth lands in the Everfree, and generally has a bad time. It's somewhat dark, but it's used to good effect, which makes for an interesting change of pace. Back again. I thought of something and wanted your opinions on the matter.

I already said that I want this story to be mostly cute, fluffy SoL of Starlight and Spike bonding as a couple until they eventually make the decision to have sex.

Then, as I wrote, I thought of a way of having some steamy sex scenes earlier in the story: Have Starlight have a wet dream of Spike and her. That way I can still make their growth organic and not blow the story's figurative and literal load before the end.

Thoughts?

In terms of realism, sure, but I'd rather read about Starlight's wet dream than Spike's. I want trippy and sensual, which is more likely to come from Starlight than from a horny teenage guy.

Though, author anon, if you're planning on having only one big sex scene at the end, this dream thing might be a way to write a second sex scene from the other character's POV, without messing up the structure of the fic.

>>27396921
>Ignoring the fact that it would absolutely ruin the mood of his fic
How's that? Maybe the dream is the final straw that forces one character to really consider their feelings for the other. That seems like it would fit in just fine.

>what's so great about wet dreams?
Dunno, I just like the combination of sex and weird dream logic. Cancerino's r63 Apple Bloom fic had a chapter like that, it was great.
>>
>>27398672
>How's that?
He's writing a SoL/Romance fic focusing on slowly developing the relationship between the two characters, before serving the readers some sweet payoff in the form of a sex scene.
Putting a detailed sex scene in the middle of the story and saying "LOL IT'S JUST A WET DREAM HAHA :))" ruins not only the ending, but also the overall mood of the story.

Not to mention you wouldn't even remember a wet dream.
>>
>>27398743
>He's writing a SoL/Romance fic focusing on slowly developing the relationship between the two characters, before serving the readers some sweet payoff in the form of a sex scene.
You make it sound like the only point of reading the fic is to get to the sex scene, which I don't think matches with what the author's trying to write.

>Putting a detailed sex scene in the middle of the story and saying "LOL IT'S JUST A WET DREAM HAHA :))" ruins not only the ending
If it's written well, the wet dream scene will be full of weird disjointed dream logic, nothing like the "main" sex scene at the end.

>but also the overall mood of the story.
Again, how? I already gave one example of how it could fit into the romance plot. I assume the author also has some idea about how a wet dream might fit into the story, else he wouldn't have asked about it.
>>
>>27398851
>You make it sound like the only point of reading the fic is to get to the sex scene, which I don't think matches with what the author's trying to write.
That's not what I was saying at all.

>If it's written well, the wet dream scene will be full of weird disjointed dream logic
Dreams aren't always weird and disjointed, and something like this would be very hard to write well.

>Again, how?
SoL, SoL, SoL, SoL, HARDCORE DRAGON SEX, SoL, SoL, SoL
Spot one thing that doesn't belong. It would fit the tone of the story when their love gets stronger and their relationship develops to the point of having sex. Including it any earlier, even in a dream, would be out of place - not within the plot, but within the tone.

>I already gave one example of how it could fit into the romance plot.
And it was a bad one. If a random sex scene out of nowhere was a turning point in a SoL-focused romance story, I'd drop that shit in a heartbeat.

>I assume the author also has some idea about how a wet dream might fit into the story, else he wouldn't have asked about it.
Or he just came up with a way to justify the sex tag, but doesn't yet know how to incorporate it into the story, so he's just pitching the idea to test the waters.

Nothings More Important
http://www.fimfiction.net/story/288338/nothings-more-important

62k words [M] [sex] [gore] [adventure] [human] [random] [romance]

Earth pony winds up on earth, does some shit, hooks up with a werewolf and her human friend, then everyone returns to ponyland.

This guy sucks at coming up with horsenames and the romance angle is definitely rushed. A horny werewolf is one thing, but the human chick jumps on the horsecock bandwagon much too quickly. The slice-of-lifey parts are fun, but it ends on an abrupt and arbitrary point with the possibility of an eventual sequel.

Its a quick and easy read and kinda fun despite the rushed feeling and non-ending
>>
>>27398947
>That's not what I was saying at all.
Then I don't understand why you say having a sex scene in the middle would ruin the ending. Is this part of the same issue about the sex seeming out of place in the middle of the fic when their relationship hasn't developed that far yet?

>Dreams aren't always weird and disjointed, and something like this would be very hard to write well.
>SoL, SoL, SoL, SoL, HARDCORE DRAGON SEX, SoL, SoL, SoL
Uh, okay, I think I may have misunderstood your point. I definitely don't want to see a hardcore, realistic sex scene in the middle of the fic. I agree it would be totally out of place and throw off the pacing of the fic.

When I saw "wet dream scene", what I imagined was a scene full of that 'weird disjointed dream logic', featuring Spike and some nonsensical (dream-like) sexual/sensual elements. It could even get away without including actual sex of any kind.

>something like this would be very hard to write well.
I was going to dispute this, but then I went back and read the wet dream chapter from Cancerino's fic, and even that wasn't as good as I thought I remembered it being. So yeah, what I described is probably hard to write. Better to not describe the dream directly, just a few scattered events and sensations that Starlight remembers after waking up. I think that would give about the same impression for the reader, while being easier to write and avoiding an explicit sex scene in the middle of the fic.
>>
>>27399467
>those tags
>that ratio
Why in god's name did you ever start reading this in the first place?
>>
>>27399655
I honestly ignore the ratio. Remember that that most of the people reading this shit have no taste, so whether autists like it or not doesnt carry much weight to me.

And even if I were to care about the ratio, anything with less than 20 votes hasnt received enough attention to warrant leaning in any given direction

As for the tags, none of those is a dealbreaker on their own. if sex happens, then that tag is required. Im not sure at what point the gore tag becomes required, and with as little blood as there is in that particular story, he likely could have gotten away with not using it. Really the only triggerworthy tag this has is the random tag, which was probably only used because the adventure and SoL tags cant be used together

As to why I would start reading this at all, well honestly I'm hitting the dregs of my RL shelf. other than shit I'm already tracking, I wont touch an incomplete fic, and most of the complete fics left in my RL shelf dont sound all that interesting so I'll open random shit and hope for the best
>>
I didn't expect my question to stir up so much discussion.
Hooray, I guess.
I just came back from uni, so I guess I should try to do a better job explaining what I meant here >>27396143

My purpose with the story is to show how Starlight comes to terms with her feelings for Spike, they working over their barriers, having fun and enjoying each other's company, and then, well, having sex.

Starlight's main reservations towards the relationship are mostly insecurities about herself, and the nagging feeling that she may be taking advantage of Spike, who in the story has only recently turned eighteen while she's around her mid twenties.

This of course seeps into her need for physical intimacy. These dreams would be her way of coping with the desire Spike to rut her senseless and her feeling of shame/inappropriateness until she feels comfortable enough with him for them to make that decision.

And regarding the dreams themselves, the way I envisioned them is that they wouldn't be too descriptive, and there would be very few of them, and initially would only manifest as some, let's say, heavy petting sessions that keep escalating until she realises that she needs the hot dragon dicks.

So, now that I gave a better explanation, what do you guys think?
>>
Trump bump
>>
>>27395933
That "Rainbow Factory from an accountant's POV" is still not being written. And I'm still torn as to whether I should kill Twilight in the climax as the protag flees to whistleblow to Celestia or not and whether or not she's actually successful in whistleblowing.

>>27396143
>have a wet dream of Spike and her
I don't know. It feels a little too convenient. How often do you have wet dreams--let alone ones right on the topic you're focusing on? Plus there's >>27396326. It does kind of ruin the climax, doesn't it?

I get about one a quarter, and they're almost never on the topic I'm intending to masturbate to that day.

>>27398672
>How's that?
From a narrative perspective, it ruins things. It's all about the slow build-up of the relationship which eventually reaches it's peak at the end. It's like an action fic where they have the big fight with the villain and win, but it was just a robot and they have a very similar fight against the actual villain some time later. The payoff's a lot less for the reader if they've already gotten part of the climax ten chapters early.

>>27401051
>she realises
It could work, but that sounds cliche. The whole "character has dreams that slowly pushes them to a decision" has been done many, many times and never really makes sense. How often have dreams influenced key, like changing decisions you're going to make? Dreams just aren't a gateway to the subconscious. They're a bunch of really weird random shit your brain is throwing at a wall as it sorts through all the stuff you've done that day.

I'd rather see her fears/anxieties reflected in her actual actions in the story, rather than the convenient plot dream world.
>>
>>27401051
I agree with multireplyanon
>>
>>27401051
Even if we discard TSG, there's still the level of realism the dream offers. I don't know if it's the same as everyone, but my dreams are mostly delusional, vague and easily forgettable, to the point I can't remember them past an hour after I wake up unless I try very hard. She could be lucid dreaming, but that apparently requires some training.
>>
>>27401051
>So, now that I gave a better explanation, what do you guys think?
It sounds like you're making too much of the story depend on the dreams. Might be okay if the recurring dreams keep happening whether she likes it or not, and she feels guilty/conflicted over them. But even then I think you can (and should) get away with only one occurrence of the dream.

>I envisioned them is that they wouldn't be too descriptive
Good

>initially would only manifest as some, let's say, heavy petting sessions
Also good

>desire Spike to rut her senseless
>she needs the hot dragon dicks
I hope the prospect of hot dragon dickings isn't TOO big an influence on her decision making. It shouldn't be the reason they get together, but it would be okay as the reason she stops trying to fight it.

>>27402312
>my dreams are mostly delusional, vague and easily forgettable
Sure, same here, but if there's a strong emotional reaction to the content of the dream, it becomes a lot more memorable. I have a few that I still remember years later.

The real danger sign is I even started writing something entirely new about I.M.Meen as a chaos magician in Equestria out boredom.

I utterly refuse to leave this project unfinished considering what a completed only snob I am.

What's wrong with Anthro stories?
>>
>>27412544
If you want to write human, do it.

If you want to write pony, do it.

But why for fuck's sake would you do both if you can't decide?
>>
>>27412544
It reeks of furry stuff, which pony totaly isn't I swear.
>>
Anyone want to summarize the thread for OP?
>>
>>27412544
Making ponies anthro is only ever done for one of two reasons (and sometimes both): sex, or laziness. Both of which strongly suggest a tendency toward the real problem: shitty writing. Anthro ponies generally have three main differences to them compared to regular ponies that are the result of these two motives: Hands, which is lazy writing because they don't want to figure out/think about how ponies use hooves or magic to do things; Breasts, which is obviously purely a sex thing because.....well, TITS; and nudity taboos, which is also a sex thing because WHOOPS OH GOSH MY TOP POPPED ISN'T THAT EMBARRASSING AND FUNNY AND SEXY?

I can tolerate it in art, and even appreciate it, because it's a purely visual medium, but in fiction it's just lazy, shitty writing at its worst. Seriously, what possible reason would there be to take a pony and slap hands and breasts and nudity qualms on them if not to cut corners and/or tittilate? I dare you, or anyone, to show me an anthro fic that A) is completely non-sexual and has zero jokes about being caught naked/in panties/otherwise exposed, and B) is actually good.

>>
>>27412725
Anthro for sex purposes is just another form of laziness. The author wants it to be exotic (and therefore interesting), but not SO exotic that they actually need to put some thought into how pony sex might differ from human sex.
