Some of the humour in this episode didn't really hit the right notes at all. It'd be fine in some other show, but it doesn't sit right in MLP.
Bit of fan pandering too for seemingly no reason which felt a bit jarring. It was nice though, Trixie got a new friend, Twilight is still making mistakes and based Cranky had a great line at the end.
Trixie also wasn't made into a villain and instead it actually seemed logical why Twilight had her doubts.

In the first episode she got over her fear of losing friends because of them finding out the evil apocalyptic shit she did after making up with Sunburst. If anything it's exactly what I as a Glimmerfag wanted. We really didn't need another fucking Fluttershy 5.0 and the writers were smart enough to just get over her awkwardness as fast as they could by cramming it into the Premiere (they probably couldn't even come up with enough ideas on the shitty baby concept to fill 44 minutes either, so they just decided to shove the Starlight Episode in there) so they can get to her becoming her own personality.

+ Almost everyone was believable and in-character, surprisingly. It makes Starlight's reformation a little better in hindsight, now that they show that it wasn't overnight. Even though everyone was sort of bitchy, but they were believably bitchy.
+ Some legitimately funny gags. Celly's silent reaction to the whole thing, Trixie poking her head out, etc.
+ Twilight non-sue status confirmed. It's nice to see her still struggling with real flaws.

Excellent Trixie and Starlight interaction.
Twilight getting called out for apparently not actually forgiving Trixie, which becomes sort of the main conflict of the episode. Hell, even Trixie comments on it. Twilight is obviously so worried about how she'll appear in front of Celestia that she can't have a single element of Starlight's lesson that she can't control.
It all felt very believable to me, and the pandering wasn't enough to kill my enjoyment of how well the three interacted. Basically every Starlight/Trixie scene was a joy to watch.

It was nice to see Twilight being neurotic, and having Glimmer become neurotic near the beginning was a nice affirmation of how similar the two of them are, which I personally enjoy.
I don't mind Celestia being cold because it's not like that's a recent thing, that's been how she's acted nearly all season now.
Vinyl and Derpy showing up doesn't bother me because I realized they were only filling a need that needed to be filled for the story. Twilight need 2-3 ponies to be Glimmer's friend, and the stranger and more wildly distinct they were the funnier the joke of how un-compatible they were with Glimmer was. The writers could have created new characters to fill the niche, but felt it would be easier to use established characters instead. (This is why someone like Lyra or Bon Bon wasn't used, because those ponies are still seen as mostly 'normal' when compared to someone with a design as crazy as Vinyl.)
A couple of the jokes landed as well.
And my waifu showed up.
All in all, it was a pretty good episode.

I like the fact that it showed how everyone still has their issues.
Trixie wants to be a better pony, but still kind of has a problem/competitive nature with Twilight.
Twilight is still neurotic, but she's trying to be a teacher and it's harder for her to understand what that means when she doesn't initially realize the amount of freedom that Celestia gave her and how it helped shape her life.
With Starlight, I just really enjoyed the fact that as a former villain she leans back on the thing that made her powerful, her magic, even though she's using it in a helpful manner and is trying to connect with someone who was a former villain as well.
The pandering was a bit much at times but it's like product placement, you just deal with it .

The first season is good for introducing someone to the show or if you want to marathon the series from the beginning, but the series as a whole doesn't really pick up until about season 2.
The only major credit I give to season one was having the best season finale, simply because it was before the series started the precedent of having every season finale being either a two-part epic or permanently show-changing mindfuckery like MMC.

I rate 8/10. The premise is very interesting: Twilight lets Starlight choose someone to be a friend. She chooses the one pony Twilight doesn't like even though technically she has forgiven her already. And even though she has no reason to bear a grudge, she doesn't trust her. It shows that Twilight still has a lot to learn and it also develops Starlight as a character.
The only downparts? The intro "Starlight asking everyone to become a friend" montage wasn't really that interesting but I guess the time had to be filled with something so whatever. Secondly, I don't like salty ponies, and this episode had a lot of salt. Finally: too many memes and Celestia didn't talk. But I don't really care.
This episode deserves a solid 9/10.

This may not always be the case but the harsh reality that everyone chooses to ignore is that often there actually WAS something you could have done. A situation you could have handled better, more attention that could have been paid, help that could have been rendered.
When someone commits suicide the reality is that it's not "No one could have done anything to stop it". The reality is "People are not perfect and this time no one was ABLE to stop it".
People just have a hard time accepting their own fallibility. It's a psychological defense mechanism intended to protect you from depressive thoughts.

I'd argue that a season of a show can have good things about it without necessarily having a top episode. I'd consider Sonic Rainboom, Suited for Success, and Cutie Mark Chronicles my favorite episode in season one, but even then I admit that they have pretty uninteresting moments that keep them from being "perfect" in my eyes.
Point is, setting a precedent doesn't immediately mean they set the highest standard of the show's quality. If anything, I'd say the opposite is true, because the first season of any show tends to be rather unrefined, pilot test-y, and unsure about what direction it wants to take up until the producers, writers, and directors know what actually worked (see: Parks & Rec). By that point, they've already been greenlit for a second season, and they can work on narrowing down some points to focus on going into the show's future.

If you truly went into the show blind, and found that your favorite episode was say, Winter Wrap Up, and to your mind, more episodes like that would be pleasurable, then there is no reason not to rate WWU a 10/10. Slice of life pretty much summed up that Celestia is a total ass outside of smiling for the camera. 6/10 for me
I had very high hopes when the main plot started picking up but I found the resolution to be very disappointing.
The dialogue between Twilight, Trixie, and Starlight felt very forced and I think more time should have been devoted to the resolution of the conflict between Starlight and Trixie.
In my opinion the plot of this episode is not suitable for a 22 minutes long runtime when you also cram in comic relief; The episode would have been much better if there had been more time to explore it's plot.
I wish this could have been the season premiere two-parter, it probably would have become one of my all-time favourites.
Also Starlight doesn't even consider for a second that she should maybe tell Twilight that she's not coming for dinner.
If she had gone to Twilight and been like "Hey Twilight, I know this dinner is important to you but Trixie needs my help" the situation could have unfolded just like it did in the episode but I wouldn't have gotten so angry at the characters being stupid for the sake of a convenient plot.
Of course that wouldn't have allowed for the scene where Celestia and Twilight are awkwardly waiting, but that scene had in my opinion little value anyways.
I would have much preferred if that whole scene with Celestia was cut out and they instead spontaneously decide to watch the show Trixie and Starlight put forth (after they make up).

Why do I end up disliking literally every episode of this season so far? There's good moments in all of them, but I just end up outright cringing in too many places. Like there's this uncomfortable feeling I'm forced to swallow. The entire segment of the mane 6 trying to introduce new friends for Starlight felt like that. They make her unnaturally bad at socializing in only those moments like it's supposed to be a funny joke.
The only joke I see is the execution.
Overall though, vore/10 magic tricks apparently make me on edge even when they're cartoons.

Alright anon who was bitching aboutt Starlights development earlier, I'm going through the episode again and I again, don't get where this change in Starlight come from.

Why? Situations are rarely that black and white. She was clearly not happy with Twilight. Not in the sense where she never wants to see her again, but where her feelings were hurt and she wasn't really thinking clearly. It makes sense that immediately after Twilight showed she didn't trust Starlight, the latter would make a rash decision, and later on when Twilight herself showed up, she'd appear more regretful.
I'm really not sure why you're picking apart this interaction. It's not bizarre to have a character act irrationally when hurt, nor to act colder when a character is not around as opposed to being confronted by the character.

I'm picking this apart because this was not a hastily done decision by Starlight.
Hours passed between Trixie convincing Starlight to ditch Twilight and the show where Twilight shows up.
I completely agree that humans (or cartoon ponies behaving like humans) can act irrationally when hit with strong emotion.
However, I have trouble believing that during the hours that went by Starlight didn't once calm down and consider that she will be humiliating Twilight in front of Celestia unless she tells her she won't appear.
Starlight was not informing Twilight of her change in plans 'in cold blood' so to speak, and it seems very inconsistent to me that she would then, if she made the conscious decision to humiliate Twilight, immediately back down once Twilight gets pissed like you would expect.

People like things that are consistent. Just because I like skateboards, and stories about skateboards, that doesn't mean I want to see "how do you do, fellow kids?"-guy pushing skateboards into everything. They're complaining about Derpy and Vinyl because they stuck out like sore thumbs, not because they're favorites.
This is probably for a few reasons:
1) Twilight points to them, so it's literally a "look at these horses" moment.
2) They're both mute (mostly), so all they can do is be there and let us look at them.
3) The fact that they appear in succession, being the most popular breakout characters, makes it feel like a transparent bid for approval.
If you didn't feel pandered to, more power to you. But obviously a lot of people did, and it's not just mean and nasty trorrs trying to harvest (You)s. All I can do is try to analyze why they felt that way.
