Has anyone seen bath lately? I feel like he's steadily building a large stockpile of unfinished CYOAs--I just want one to be completed.

So I'm 99% sure he's not here, but if you are, Juicy, I'm sorry if I fucked up anything in your CYOA.

As for the rest of you, I hope you enjoyed my little April Foal's game thing at least a little bit, because I had a lot of fun running it. More than I have in awhile, honestly.

Yeah, depending on how things go I'm gonna be exploiting a bit of a loophole in the school's overnight guest rules for the next two months before the gf moves down with her friend. She'd probably have problems if she read what we said about her here. Most Anons make here sound like they are one step short of calling her worthless. I've been wondering if I should give a try at this QM thing.
I remember one thing /cyoa/ did some time ago, with creating a character Cutie Mark first. They made this character called Pocket Watch or something like that, a reasonably well off watchmaker living in Canterlot who used to be a theif. He seemed like an interesting enough idea, so I was thinking of using him. Problem is, other than possible backstories and the MC himself, I'm not too sure about what I can do with that to make a plot.
I have no real experience writing stories, working a temp job that takes me out of the house nearly the whole day, and character creation is kinda hard for me.Not to mention my timezone means I'm awake when America is asleep. Also, I can't into art
Coming up with ideas is the only thing I can don't do terribly, really.

So, on a scale of taco bell to septic tank overflow, how shitty do you anons think I'll be?
>>
>>26955946
give it a try, you might just like it
>>
>>26955946
Taco Bell.
>>
>>26955946
Doesn't sound like ideal circumstances, but maybe JUST try it and then you'll know. Running a quest is a whole fucking ton of work over a long period of time.
>>
>>26955946
Might as well give it a try if you think you'll enjoy it. The worst that can happen is wasting a couple hours to find out it's not for you.
>>
>>26955999
>>26956000
Trips confirm it. Go get a taco bell and start your quest.
>>
>>26955980
>>26956000
>>26956008
So much creative work like that for so long is honestly something I don't really think I can handle. Granted, I've never really tried before. I think my language is good enough, at least.
This idea was a bit of an impulse thing really, running as a QM. Most of what I've done is just read stories. And that's the part that's telling me it'll turn out terrible.

I'll keep this idea in mind for quite a while I think, so even if I stop running I like to think I'll just keep coming back to it. Like a really really long hiatus.

I'll think about it though. Maybe I'll try tomorrow. If I get my confidence again

>>26955999

If anons put up with Nips and PurpleWriterSomething QM of You Reap What You Saw, they'll put up with you.
>temp job takes all my time
I know that feel, and while it's completely hindering, you can probably still try to find some time for a short quest if you really, really want to. Be aware that it /will/ take effort and energy out of you.
>No real experience
Pretty sure at least half the QMs had little to no experience before their first thread either. If you can properly write a post, you can write a quest.
>character creation
Your players will handle the MC. You will need to find a way to create characters that will support the story one way or another, though.
I remember reading that you can consider the world itself like a character, interacting with the other characters in more subtle ways, and reacting to their actions globally.
I can't help much more than that though. I'm not good, but I don't think there are general rules that apply everywhere either. Think of how social interaction works in real life - that's how you make a character alive, after all.
>plot
Don't overwork it. Look at Urban Survival. Or hell, look at Lemon Quest. Then look at Heat or Pumpkin Panic.
A simple plot can last a whole lot longer than you first imagine. Even with no plot at all, you can easily last for an entire thread.

Overall, running a short, simple quest is probably what you need. Think of something simple enough - you and your marefriend are baking a cake, only to find out you miss an essential ingredient! Where are you going to find it? Then think of a couple of obstacles, two or three sidekicks, friends or bystanders, and think of a way to put them in your way.
That's it, you got a quest, now you just need to find some time to run it! Make sure to fill it with extra cute, fun, comedy and adventure.
And of course, do it for fun. Nobody will enjoy it if you can't. Looking at you inept :))))
>>
>>26956038
Daily reminder that posts are free, threads are free, names are disposable and only an autist would hate you for trying.
Go play some stealth games and then give it a go.
>>
>>26956048
>>26956060
Well as far as supports go, the hardest part will be naming them.

>cute, fun, comedy, adventure
That kinda depends on the opinions of the players, do I think I can do that in a way they'd appreciate?
Well, there's always puns at least.

Okay anons, you've convinced me to give it a go. Tomorrow though.Research to do, ideas to collect, homework to write
>>
>>26956038
Well, for starters, keep it simple and don't go for a quest that would probably take half a year to finish. There is absolutely nothing wrong with making a quest that can be finished in maybe two weeks. Especially for new QMs.

Are most people following CYOAs for the story?

Because I think it would be cool to have a CYOA where you're placed into a deadly scenario with a certain set of rules, and if the players can't figure out how to deal with the threat in a certain amount of updates, the game resets and everyone has to try again until success. And this just repeats with different, but unique, scenarios.

Maybe this already exists, I don't know. Just thought it was a neat idea.
>>
>>26960289
I personally follow CYOAs for the characters and story.

It sounds neat for a little diversion, at least. Maybe a one shot with permadeath.
>>
>>26960289
I follow CYOAs for the characters and the characters alone. Sometimes I even follow something for the characters in SPITE of the plot. Longname.

>>26960344
That's why some peopele call it quests
>>
>>26960436
I prefer CYOAs to quests. Both in name and implied concept.
>>
>>26960436
Doesn't change the fact that you're completely nullifying the effects of choice, the entire thing these are based around.
>>
>>26960344
This. The more I choose, the more attached I am. There's nothing wrong with green, but I can't get quite as invested in it as I can with something that I have had a say in to who the person is and what they do.
>>
>>26960289
I follow CYOAs primarily for the characters/story. That's mainly because there aren't any other kinds of CYOAs out. I might play CYOAs for other reasons if they themselves didn't focus on the story/characters.

>>26960455
There's no real distinction between CYOAs and quests on /mlp/. On /tg/ they have vastly different connotations.
>>
>>26960483
>no distinction
I know they are used interchangeably here, but that's not what I meant. I prefer CYOAS as a name because it emphasizes the fact that choice is important.
>>
>>26960502
Ah, I misunderstood the post.
>>
>>26960344
Well, I mean, wouldn't that be up to how each scenario is designed!
This wasn't my initial thought, but what if it were something like the Hitman games where choices DO matter and change the outcome of achieving the set goal? Unless you mean that the problem lies with there being a defined winstate in the first place, which I understand.

Just throwing idead around.

>defined winstate feels unnecessarily limiting

>>
>>26960561
The April's fool thing was done via CSS. If he never refreshed then it will stay active.
>>
>>26960344
I think it's the difference between Colorblind and 11-54. In Colorblind the QM had one specific avenue to get through every bit of his house. So you had to pick up on whatever random thought he had and he'd slam a stop sign down on anything else. In 11-54 Bath seems to have a goal for each section and it seems a way he expects the players to get through it, but he doesn't limit them too that.

If this guy goes the Bath route and just makes it more deadly than Bath I could see it working and not having issues with limiting choices. It'd just require the players to figure out their environment. 'course that wouldn't necessarily be everyone's cup of tea.
>>
>>26960551

>>26960582
CSS can't do a damn thing for anyone else's computers. If that were the case it would only be showing up on his screen. The name thing was done on the server via PHP and is no longer in effect. He's doing it intentionally.
>>
>>26960608
Well then /qa/ lied to me.
>>
>>26960669
The name thing was the only bit that was server side. Everything else was just CSS. Chances are that's what they were referring to.

Vamp: Because I found the idea's behind it interesting, and since it had been hijacked before me, I didn't figure I'd be the only one to keep on running it. I'm glad that someone else did.

TES: The response here was very positive, and I'd considered doing it before. I thought no one would like it. I do appologize, because I fucked up the pacing recently on it, like >>26962526 said makes him drop a quest.

The main reason I drop quests is if I stop enjoying playing. This can happen in several different ways. I don't really want to mention specifics with my name on.

Don't feel discouraged, always try new things. If you're the first and others disagree with your actions, they'll make sure to say, and that's all. It's a game shared between players, sometimes you win the vote, sometimes you lose it, but there's no reason to fret. QM's appreciate when there are many votes, and discussion makes threads more lively.

>>26965217

>>
>>26965173
If possible, you should think of none and just check if the thing that players suggest would work or not. Sure, think about one or two ideal ways, but I think if the players come up with a well thought out plan you hadn't thought about, it shouldn't be disregarded, just because the QM was not prepared to write for that outcome.
I know, that's probably not what you were implying, but just generally speaking.
>>
>>26965229
Personally, the most fun part of QM'ing is that it works like tennis. I write an update, then toss a problem or situation the players' way. Not always I have a definitive solution for it, I'm waiting to see what people can come up with, and then it's up to me to come up with a reasonable update based on their answers. Even if it's not creative or non-trivial, just give it a try and speed up to be the first to answer. Some, if not most QM's will appreciate it, even if the vote is extremely obvious.
>>
>>26965245
Oh sure, I do that too. Plenty of times I've thought 'yeah, that makes sense, that'll work'

>>26965332
Giving the QM a vote at all is already material to work with. Running a quest means effort, there's nothing wrong if every now and then a vote ends up being obvious and agreed upon.

So, what do you like better? Big text updates that take longer and where most details are part of the QM's narrative, but you have to give an adequately long suggestion or quests with short but frequent updates where you decide on more of the details yourself with shorter suggestions? Do you feel bad when you can't think of a good reply to a lengthy update and give a suggestion under 10 words? If you're a QM, do you think your players spend a lot of time on unimportant details for minor decisions?
Or just a mix of both depending on the situation? But if you go for "a mix", which parts do you usually enjoy more?

Agreed. I think it's enjoyable if you have to decide if you want to have waffles or pancakes for breakfast pancakes being the obvious choice of course or what drink the MC orders at the bar and stuff like that and not only on the "important" stuff while the rest is being micro-railroaded.
>>
>>26965380
I think for the most part it's good to have shorter updates that let people interact more, with some times having a longer update that doesn't depend on player input as much, especially if it's a fairly major plot point.
>>
>>26965380
Depends on the quest.
Sometimes smaller details and decisions aren't what players are focused on.
>>
>>26965506
yeah, also when the QM just updates like once or twice an hour, I do other shit in the meantime and the longer he takes the more time-consuming shit I do and when I'm in the middle of something else and it's a long ass update and I'd have to post a paragraph-long suggestion, I might decide to wait for someone else to write something and just

Players never stopped liking short posts. What changed was QMs going for stronger narratives over player control. The more a QM belts out per update the more space the QM controls. And one person controlling a story generally results in a stronger narrative. You could see this in Long Name where the players made "decisions" while the QM almost completely controlled the narrative. It eventually buckled of course because the QM took too much ground and showed his hand.
>>
>>26967660
Long Name's original QM popped into sekrit club today and said that he might be resurrecting it. Hence Wolvan's hesitancy.

Also I'm sorry Arc, I couldn't fit Sunny D number three in there, possibly because I'm lazy or maybe because lesbian threesomes are difficult to sort out due to the number of entangled ponies you need to visually piece together or tossing more ponies into any picture adds a compounding 50% time increase to my own drawing output because I kinda suck. Take your pick, because it's probably right.

>>26972303

Yes it was. As stated several times before however, due to how we had played up until that point, there wouldn't have been a dark secret because we'd have done everything possible to weasel our way out of it and then cry railroading when we would have been smacked for it.

>>26972327

Some QMs only run weekends.

>>
>>26972327
>>26972353
Not true. It would only be a paradox if we changed something that was true in the present. The thing we wanted to do wouldn't violate anything that we were told about what had happened.
>>
We picked a course of action that decided facts about our past while staying in line with the limited information we had (Etherwing has to still exist after this, she has to hate us, we have to have a dark secret, and we have to be nervous around Twilight).

No paradox.
>>
>>26972367

Weaseling out of doing a horrible thing that leads us to have a dark secret IS causing a paradox.
>>
>>26972383
We weren't weasaling out of doing a horrible thing. We still did the dark magic. We just wanted to try and lessen the long term harm. We still would have had a damning dark secret.
>>
>>26972383
Do you not realize what the players were upset about, anon? They were disappointed by being forced to do dark magic, but they got over it, because as you pointed out it would have been a paradox not to have done it. The real railroading that upset them was not being allowed to return the mark afterwards. That wouldn't make a paradox. We were told NOTHING of how Emberspark ended up in the future.
>>
>>26972383
That's what the compromise was for. It got the dark secret that was required but the personality for Etherbreeze that the players wanted. It solved everything, but the QM refused to meet them halfway, so it died.
>>
>>26972402
>>26972423
>>26972435

>>
>This argument again
At the end of the day Long Name QM made at least one significant error no matter what. Don't pretend to give your players a choice if they don't really have one.
>>
>>26972452
Their option would have created a paradox, yes, unless Twilight responded in a very specific way, but that wasn't what we were talking about, now is it? The "tell everything" people were reasoned with, and a compromise was reached.
>>
>>26972463
This so much. People don't like having their choices taken away. If you can't railroad without being super obvious about it, then you have to suck it up on go off the rails. Longname didn't understand that.

>tell everything, get twi to help ember
Objection, unless Twilight is VERY understanding and willing to cover for us, that's a paradox. GM said no.
>tell just the dark magic to twi, get her to help ember, hide etherwing
Much less likely to be a paradox, but still a chance if Twilight doesn't understand our motivations. GM said no.

In his defense, the paradox free way might have conflicted with things that he wanted to have happen later but hadn't told us about yet. Even if it didn't make a paradox he might have needed to shut down what we wanted to do so he could railroad the plot he wanted later on.
>>
>>26972614
Remeber, kids, planning ahead hurts your quest

>>26972614
>cut him some slack, he was only railroading so that he could railroad more later on!

Lack of flexibility is a sin too.

It was one of inept's biggest problems as a QM.

It really depends on who's running.
With me you'll see a new thread once every weekend because I'm busy during the week and I don't like to keep the thread filled with bumps and keeping our one good bumpfag slaving away.

If Mangoanon takes over somewhere in between then the thread could last the whole week because if I remember right he updated almost daily. Which is probably what burned him out in the first place.
And if that happens maybe I'll post some art or do a short update just to keep the thread alive till the weekend, where I'll do some longer stuff.
>>
>>26972653
Agreed wholeheartedly. Hence why I'm being as vague as possible with Paper Pony's 'structure.'

Remember, kids: Don't build a railroad. Just build a few train stations. Your players will find a way to get to them by themselves.
>>

I don't remember him saying no to helping Ember?
>>
>>26972714
Etherbreeze considered helping him, decided that she didn't want to risk it, and followed Twilight back into the auditorium instead. Wolvan's version diverged from that exact decision.
>>
>>26972714
He did, after we tried to tell Twilight what we had done and the GM said no. We tried the "help him ourselves" version next.

>>26972688
Because I maintain the opinion that this has become an unsalvageable mess. The players don't want Pink's version, and Wolvan doesn't want Wolvan's version. There is no way out where people don't get hurt. Longname was a great ride while it lasted, but it's over now. Let the dead rest in piece.

Whatever Pink runs when he comes back, I will play it happily, but I don't think it would be in his best interests to try and salvage Longname, and it certainly isn't what Wolv wants to steal it from him.
>>

>>26972357
Well, that could mean it's over.

Reminder that Ponkfag saw a weak quest crawling on broken limbs out of the dark.
Reminder that Ponkfag saw the battered little cyoa as it reached out and called for help.
Reminder that Ponkfag then said "No. You should die".

I just want to come out of this with the fewest people being hurt possible.
>>
>>26972849
That's not how it happened. He saw someone helping the battered little cyoa up onto it's feet again. He watched as it took a few steps forward on the way to recovery. Then he put his hand on that person's shoulder and whispered "Let it die, it can never recover"

As if Wolvan's wishy washyness can be summed up that easily. He flipped on whether he was going to continue it constantly.
>>
Longname hit a rough patch with extremely polarized opinions and the final decision clashing heavily with the qm's plans. It'll only die if the players keep trying to kill it. I'd also like to point out that Emberspark isn't a blank slate and was implied to have recovered.

wow can we all forget about Longname and how it's player base wanted etherbreeze to be a good pony which cause the QM to put his foot down when the player base want to tell everyone about the imaginary friend that is the tattoo which used black magic because it would cause a paradox, and they are to busy wanting what they want from the flashback then what was intended from the QM with cause him to completely drop the quest all together

That was only the first plan, and it was abandoned fairly quickly after a discussion was held. The later versions of the plan avoided paradox. See >>26972562.

We're practically at the end of the flashback. If the qm doesn't listen to the players after the flashback is over than it wouldn't even be a CYOA anymore.
>>
>>26973124
Wolvan's bailing at the end of the flashback. It's not going to be a CYOA anymore by virtue of not continuing at all.

Fair enough. You're right. We got to choose how we spent our day, what we did with our friends, what our relationship with our mother was going to be, and a dozen other things. We only really got railroaded at the very end.
>>
>>26973220
How did the players kill it? The players begged Wolvan to continue it. They were trying to keep it alive. Ponkfag was the only one saying they should just let it die.
