Six freaking months, but I'm finally about to finish the first chapter of my Luna Dream Fic. One scene more and it's good to go. Well, and then comes the editing.

I'm really liking how it's shaping up. I'll do my best to try to post it here for feedback sometime tomorrow or Friday at the most.

What about you, guys? Working on anything?
>>
It is I, the great Don Carny. I have written the beginnings of a fine fanfic for you /autism/.

The year is 2016, the place is Orlando; city where dreams come true. In the depths of an inconspicuous office building, two humans explore a hand-drawn virtual world of ponies waiting to meet the human race.
They're not alone inside, as we meet more of the team in the next chapter to come. One of them harbors a dark secret that threatens to rend asunder the boundaries between fantasy and reality itself!

I am working hard and will be releasing a chapter a day for you, big guy! Please tune in!

Oh, this again.

Your previous description sounded like it might possibly be somewhat interesting, but I clicked the link and saw
>10 upvotes
>7 downvotes
which suggests that whatever you've written is barely recognizable as English.
>>
>>26927055
>>26927037

I was trying to sound like Don Carnage, not that you'd know who that is. Yeah I'm not perfect but I'm sure you're no Dickens your self there sweetheart. Yeah. I'm gonna promote my fic seeing as the thread died overnight. I thought this was a place to post fics. Not your personal dick sucking club. Everyone can read it except you two. I don't write gay porn for faggots.
>>

its actually 11:7 now. either one of us made a mistake, or dude just created an alt account.

this somehow made its way onto my deadfic shelf.

I'm reasonably sure the description is longer than the actual content at this point as well
>>
>>26927085
I downvoted it, but I felt bad and you can't get rid of a downvote, so I upvoted it instead. Not like it will help.

People like you are why no one writes anything. I put a reasonable amount of work in, and when

>Twilight sticks her horn up Dashie's ass

counts as actual work I think I'm doing reasonable better than average. I'm trying to finish the fucking thing since on vacation. My job and travel schedule is too demanding to write most of the year. You're downvoting my shit without reading. The fuck is wrong with you? Go read some clop if you don't like it, sick horsefucker.

I read the first chapter and it was nowhere near as bad as I was expecting. Not sure how you managed to get 9:5 (which is a pretty awful ratio) even prior to shilling it here. I would normally expect to see it closer to 5:1.

It's way too fucking long and parts are kind of dumb, but I would expect most people to stop after the first paragraph (which is not that bad) and either start reading the story or close the tab.
>>
>>26927215
I'd say they'd either start reading the story or assume it's shit based on the 10k word essay in the description.
>>
>>26927174

>>

You're awesome and thank you!
>>26927193
Is it too long? It was written three years ago and I'm no too attached to it. Is it TL;DR? I'll change it!
>>
>>26927253
Yeah, definitely way too long. Try to give a very brief outline of the general plot idea and make it sound interesting. Nobody is going to bother reading more than a paragraph, and even that is a lot.
>>
>>26927253
Don't get too excited. I do think a 2:1 ratio is unusually low given what I've read of the fic, but I should point out that most people ITT use 10:1 as the cutoff for "might be worth reading". I think even Bleedin has hit 5:1 once or twice.
>>
>>26927264
Damn, I was just trying to get it to stand out a little. I figured no one would bother reading it if the description wasn't fire, you know?
>>
>>26927314
No, I don't know. What are you talking about?
>>
>>26927015
My foobar library has a total duration of just over six days.
But what I am hearing right now is one composed by Steven Universe's OST+a lot of Miracle of Sound's music+Daggerfall's OST. Right now I am hearing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPd0CGR2ftU , which is one of my favorites from Daggerfall.
>>
>>26927314
If you need to click "read more" to see the entire description, it's too long. Keep it short. "Universal Studios is making blah blah virtual reality pony shit. Visitors can upload their brains/talk to waifus/blah blah blah. They took every precaution/impervious to hackers/restrictions on the AIs, but little did they know that badguys explosions danger oh no." This formula will get you a shit-tier action-movie description but at least it will get people's attention.

Also, you need cover art. 100% mandatory. And it has to be reasonably good cover art too.

>The double doors slid open and a tsunami of air conditioning rushed out to mingle with the sticky humidity of a Central Florida afternoon.

Don't you think this is way too exagerrated?

Also, even the first dialogue is misplaced, along with the needlessly long paragraph not even telling me anything I'd want to know. About the same for most of the first chapter, even more with it being extremely short to introduce us to such an ambitious project and world.

LAN, MMORPG, CRT, those mean nothing to me, and I'm not spending any time googling their meaning, as it's not my job. Overall, again, the first chapter is dry, undescriptive, extremely fast-paced and boring.

Can I snag some recommendations for decent recent Gilda and Griffon fics, or at least some where they are prominent characters? It's been a few years since I've checked fimfiction but from memory, I've already read:

Heart of Gold, Feathers of Steel, Summer Days, Evening Flames
Blunder and Lightning
Junior Speedsters Forever
Putting the Harm in Harmony
Helping the Dweeb
Mothers
Foreigner
Flying the Coop

And probably others that I can't remember. I'm not too picky; I'll take any length, crossovers or genre but I prefer no humans and not too far over the edge.

Griffons in The Dusk Guard: Beyond the Borderlands are pretty sweet.
>>
>>26929867
What was Dusk Guard about already?
>>
>>26929867
Ah, it's a sequel. Would I have to read The Dusk Guard: Rise first or can it stand on it's own?
>>
>>26929882
The Dusk Guard is about an elite team of the Royal Guard, neither Celestia's or Luna's, that could be described as "The Elements of Military".
It also is pretty good, but griffon lore isn't even mentioned. BtB introduces a team that's a non evil opposite of the D.G..
Apparently the writer plans to write half the books focusing in a team and half in the others, but he's only written two so far.
>>
>>26929932
Aaaaah Yes. You'll miss some puns and the MC's motivation won't be quite as clear, but it is readable on its own.

This is more of a request in finding a specific story.

A couple of weeks ago, an Anon posted a link to a Fimfiction story about Twilight and her friends getting abducted and placed in a lab. The story followed each of them waking up, either alone or with one of their friends nearby.

The events included body-modifications and mutations as well as drug-induced orgies. And futafication too.

>he was like three
It would place him in the 8-12 range. Twilight was a kid (8-12) when she hatched him. And she's seen as being in her early twenties in the show (20-24).

If you age up Spike, you have to age up Twilight and the M6, as there's no way she could be 22 and him be 18--that would require her getting her cutie mark at age 4, which seems really farfetched.

Canon's not firm on ages so you can do your own thing, but readers are going to be left scratching their heads over why Spike's suddenly an adult despite it taking place shortly after/during S6. It reads like a big inconsistency.

>>26926756
Is the intro paragraph there just for context, or is it in the story? Because it's drowning in exposition.

>humans
Why? What do they bring to the table other than standard sci-fi weapons and questions about why, if there's a rebellion, they don't just launch an orbital bombardment to quickly stop it? If the plot's a basic "ponies rebelling against an evil overloard," why not use something relating to the show? Like NMM/Chrysalis/Sombra winning? Then you can worldbuild an AU setting.

Spendread the first chapter. Didn't see any major issues. First couple paragraphs seem a little long. It's not really my thing, though, so I'm gonna have to opt out.

Look at how young Twilight is when she's hatching him. I doubt she's supposed to be 12, or 10 for that matter. If Celestia's school is the first school she's enrolled in, it would make sense to place her somewhere around 6.

Again, we're talking about a group of fillies who can design dresses on their own, perform a sonic rainboom, go to Manehatten alone and understand vast amounts of magic literature. 6 is definitely not the right age. I'd put her at minimum 8.
>>
You know, without realizing I made Starlight into something of a self-empowered, self-inverted Chuchundra.
If she had it her way, she'd die irrelevant, never having touched the center of a room. She'd have a long, tranquil life without any risks.
But she can't, and that's because she won't let herself. Instead of giving to the shyness and the dread she feels at the very idea of rejection and failure, she harnesses a kind of nervous energy out of those same emotions, a sort of running motion-- a fall that somehow manages to stay at the same distance from the floor and turn horizontal. Her willpower, charisma, all the power she's ever held ultimately comes from this vicious cycle.
Her fears come from various sources: fear of turning into a Sunburst herself, abandoning her friends if she became too big, and fear of being abandoned by new Sunbursts if she became too small. No small quota, now, of becoming too irrelevant to make up for her mistakes. A dread of becoming too big and repeating her mistakes. Her awkwardness could be said to be an adaptation period, as she has yet to find how to turn paralyzing guilt into motion.
Thoughts on this?

Bernhard's Door (dream condition)

The professors responsible for analysis of the collected data believe that everyone has, at some poiont, experienced Bernhard's Door.
32% of subjects interviewed (sample size 1,300) reported experiencing (one or more) dreams during the previous five years where the door was present. 16% recalled the door from childhood dream(s) occurring at least 10 years prior to the interview. An additional 19% were able to recall the dream only when placed under hypnosis.

67% of interviewees have experienced the phenomena.

Ah, dang it, I only pasted half of it.
Well, the gist is that there's a particular dream shared by hundreds of people where they come to face a door that leads to a room where they find a certain object from their childhood. Shortly after, the object comes to life and becomes violent.

The approach I thought of was that some ponies accross Equestria start having the same dream, and Luna realises it's some sort of ancient creature from before her banishment, and trying to take it down on her own.

>>26941168
>Shortly after, the object comes to life and becomes violent.
--never mind.

But seriously, that first post sounded pretty great. I would totally read a sort of horror story about Luna investigating this shared dream where absolutely nothing bad or scary happens, the only oddity is that literally everyone has had this same dream once in their life. Then of course she encounters all kinds of weird shit - the professor has no memory of the project, the grad student has been driven insane by nightmares, the journal where it was published was burned down a year later along with all of their archives (and the arsonist swears up and down he was in bed asleep at the time of the fire)... Basically just weirdness on top of weirdness until finally near the end it becomes undeniable that there's some unknown entity controlling the entire thing.
>>
>>26941365
Yeah, I was planning to leave the extraneous details out and focus on the shared dreams, eerie atmosphere and the entity behind it.
>>
>>26941390
>focus on the shared dreams, eerie atmosphere and the entity behind it
10/10 would read

Though IMO it would be better to stick with the "eerie atmosphere" part and not get into the entity until the end. Basically spend as long as possible leaving the reader with the lingering doubt that maybe it really is all a big coincidence.

I think so too.

It's funny, I already had a similar idea in mind, (pic related) but that one was relatively larger in scope, while this one seems as if it could run its course with a long one-shot or a story with two or three chapters.

Ok, it's decided. I'll write the story about Luna and shared dreams first as a trial run, and then tackle the bigger monster.

While the Shared Dream fic is probably not going to be longer than 10k words. Twilight's FrightfullyForgetful Follies would be in the 25~30k word range. I wouldn't want it to be needlessly long.

Sure, he has issues with purple prose (that, paradoxically, isn't very descriptive), run-on sentences off the wazoo, and frankly sub-par sentence fluency, but I've seen better ratios on fics that I could barely even read due to their sheer mechanical ineptitude.

Shared Dream Luna Horror story here.

I made a rough draft of the outline today:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1u3vdQjg5fHFEA--IdZHJsRvolkj-pi_nAAvV2YKLv-k/edit?usp=sharing

That's more or less how I envision the story would go. I've yet to decide how to group these events, whether I would write it in a single long-shot, or split it into a couple of chapters.

Still, I wanted to get this done now, because I really, really, really need to update another fic, but as soon as that is out of the way, I'll start writing this story. (And continue writing the other Luna Dream Fic, of course.)

If it's explicit, it's going to need the Mature Sex tags.

>>26950932
The tags are based on the level of detail descirbed, not the actual act. If you spend four paragraphs describing a penis entering a vagina--even if the context is a scene about a sex ed class--it's going to need the tags.

Seems okay for a one-shot or so. There are a couple bullets where I wasn't sure what the point was, so they can maybe be cut. Stuff like:

>Luna talks about paperwork and the night's routing with her aide and she mentions an odd dream she has had.
We already know she had an odd dream, what's new here?

>Luna recreates the dream and tries to gather more information about it, but she’s unable to perfectly replicate it.
What's she trying to accomplish with this? And why doesn't it work?

>Luna talks with the folklorist again.
About what?

>Luna goes back to the library, but reads about Nightmare Moon this time.
Why? Is the idea that NMM is somehow causing this?

Also, did you drop the research paper angle? I liked how it shows that the weird dream is something that's been happening to everybody for a long time but nobody really paid attention. Makes it seem like a bigger deal.

>"Rock pouches"
This could actually do for interesting discussion. If they are sold, it'd mean that rock pets have at least some popularity. Maybe earth ponies can somehow "Hear" rocks, only the feel is so slow that only the most patient of them can even notice.

This one seemed pretty good, though I wasn't exactly reading it for the plot. It's fairly light on the actual clop. though I did appreciate the numerous scenes of drunk/horny robo-Celestia squirming, moaning, leaving wet spots on the pillow, that sort of thing
>>
>>26959611
>Police exists

muh Harmony

In all seriousness, their uniform seems to differ from the supposed time frame, since Equestria apparently has 1900-ish tech (not including magic) but post-40s police uniforms.
>>
>>26955178
>Is that how it's supposed to end?
Yeah, my bad. Luna is actually meant to defeat the entity, but throught the story she fears what influence it may have over her. The last thing she wants is another possible Nightmare Moon scenario. The last point is meant to be a post-battle reassurance that there is nothing to be worried about.

>>26956574
>We already know she had an odd dream, what's new here?
The writing wasn't clear. Her aide is the one that mentions having an odd dream.

>What's she trying to accomplish with this?
When she had the dream, she was caught in the feeling of dread and fear that permeated the dream. She hopes that analysing it again in a more objective way will shed some light on what was really happening.

>And why doesn't it work?
Because she's unable to recreate the same atmosphere, that feeling of eerieness, and without it the dream isn't the same.

>Luna talks with the folklorist again.
Before, she talked about dream theory and the similarities of the dreams, trying to find an answer. Now that she knows there's an evil influence at play, she wants to learn more about it.

(cont'd)
>>
>>26956574

>Why? Is the idea that NMM is somehow causing this?
Luna is afraid of the possible parallels between her own downfall and what this entity may accomplish if it gets ahold of more ponies. When she talked with Celestia about it earlier, and found out that she had kept it mostly a secret, Luna decides that she can't take that luxury, and seeing how the history books remember Nightmare Moon, she convinces herself that she must take affirmative action and get rid of the cause of the dreams, which is why she says goodby to Celestia while she's asleep, she doesn't know if she'll make it or not.

>Also, did you drop the research paper angle?
My original plan was to have both Luna and an OC researcher as the main protagonists of the story, Luna would take the arcane route, using rituals and reading ancient books, while the researcher would try to take a more scientific path.

In the end, I realised the fic would have to focus more on Luna since she's the one with the insecurities about how should she deal with the creature, and eventually fight it in Tartarus. I didn't see where else could I take the OC's arc, so I ended up swapping that for the folklorist to complement Luna's side of the story.

This is still a very rough first draft, though, nothing is set in stone, I'll see if I can find a way to reincorporate that into the story.

----

Ok, lesson learned. Don't write at 1 am, it'll only end in tears. I'll rewrite the outline to make these points clearer.

depends on how thorough you are. some folks will only outline major plot points/story arcs, while others may outline major plot points, the b storys plot points, progression, timeskips, filler, etc.

the more detailed you make the outline (and stick to it), the less likely you are to drift off course. you can remain consistent and avoid devolving your idea into an incoherent mess

I let the overall plot stew in my head for a while, then when I write it out, I usually base it off of chapters. Like what's going to happen in each chapter, along with the chapter titles.

>>26965901
For me, there'll usually be one or two "big scenes" in a chapter. Connect the dots gets played to tie it all together with in-between scenes that are thought up when writing.

So question for the thread on how you might approach this. Staying anon to avoid drama.

I wrote a fetish story, it did moderately well. 5,300 views. In it, it used a magic device to do a thing in a very specific way.

Meanwhile, other author has a fic about the same fetish. Hadn't updated in a while. When my story posted, it hadn't been updated in six months.

I stop paying attention for a few months. Come back yesterday to FiMFic to check shit out and oh look, other person's story updated. Go to check it out.

Story resumed by copying, to the exact letter, even to the point of using slightly modified descriptions, the exact device used in my story. They came off of hiatus literally just to rip off my story, and people in the comments praised them for how cool of an idea it was.

I'm kind of miffed, but at the same time I don't want to start drama. What would you do?
>>
>>26969663
>copying, to the exact letter
if its a full on copypasta then call them out on their shit.

or hit up a mod and hope theyre feeling helpful.
>>
>>26969688

Well, that was a misnomer. I exaggerated slightly. It's not EXACT plagiarism. They did make slight changes, but in general it works and the effect is identical, and the descriptions used are slightly padded versions. Adding a few words here and there.
>>
>>26969704
thats a big difference. is it copypasta with some shit added, or is it completely rewritten and only sharing a nearly identical macguffin?
>>
>>26969731

Agreed, it is. It's a completely identical macguffin which was described the same, just with ADDED words to "pad" the description. It works the same, does the exact same thing, hits the same plot points, and the story was, for all intents and purposes, on hiatus until my story was posted, they read it (I assume), then copied it.

I mean, realistically, I'm much too big of a pussy to actually call anyone out on it. I just was wondering what other people's thoughts on this kind of thing were. Is it scummy to borrow ideas so closely, or am I being an asshole?
>>
>>26969748
unless this is some folding device I have no idea what the fics in question are. Though i know there are fairly few original ideas floating around in fanfiction. and its not terribly uncommon for one persons 'super clever' idea to accidentally be remarkably similar to several other peoples ideas by pure coincidence.
But if you can screencap a selection from your fic, and set it next to a screencap of the other fic and its plainly obvious that shit has been copied and slightly embellished, then take it to a mod. explain the situation show your proof and let them handle it.

plagiarism is one of the few things they do tend to take quick and decisive action on.
>>
>>26969858
Alright, cool. Thanks for the input. I'll probably just leave it alone, then. Probably not worth the trouble, the other story has significantly less views. If they were MORE popular, I'd probably throw a fit.

I've been dabbling in Sublime lately, and I am torn up between both programs. Sublime is so fancy, but Akelpad is so no-bullshit.
Akelpad aside, I think I'm actually stitching something together. The first step is using
> find [FOLDER] -name "*.txt" -print0 | wc -w --files0-from=- | gawk '{print $1}' | tail -n 1
In a unix terminal. It's a bit convulted, but

wc -w counts the total words in all files given, which

takes from the buffer created by Find.

print0 is overkill, you don't really have newlines in your filenames do you? Plus that awk thing is unnecessary unless you're using the result in a script.

I would do:
> find [FOLDER] -name \*.txt | xargs wc -w | tail -n 1
which prints "1234 total"

Ideally I'd like to have this as a automatically run script. Also,
>find [FOLDER] -name \*.txt | xargs wc -w | tail -n 1
can't into spaces. Pic related for comparison.
>>
>>26976680
Huh, could have sworn xargs handled spaces correctly by default, but yeah, apparently it needs -0 and \0-delimited input for that.

I can't say I have that much of an understanding of what I am doing here and now, so of us both I am the dummy.
And I managed to get the date and wordcounti n the same line, with
f>ind 2016 -name "*.txt" -print0 | wc -w --files0-from=- | gawk '{print $1}' | tail -n 1 >>data.txt && date /T | gawk '{print $2}'>>data.txt
>paste -d " " - - < data.txt >>dataproc.txt
Paste combines every two lines into one.
Now I only need to make it into a chart, probably with the already mentioned matplotlib.

Yeah, seems like it peaked in 2012. Now it's no longer edgy to like MLP (aside from 4chan, where people are STILL getting flankflustered, 5 and a half years later), and the bandwagoners are on to the new flavor-of-the-month (SU and/or Undertale, seems like). Oh well. I for one am not going anywhere for at least another year (the movie, and EG4), maybe longer if GoH actually involves a show and it's actually good.

Has bronycon stopped setting new attendance records every year, yet?

Mystery, conspiracies, horror, whatever the genre, I don't care. I just want to read stories where Twilight feels like she's losing her mind.

Does anybody know any story like that?

Undertale is already fading. These days content given in a single serving lasts a month at most, with the volume of people reading its hex values to find the meaning of life.

>Just wait until G4 ends and everything gets all quiet and comfy like The Lion King fandom used to be.
I still have difficulty believing the lion king even had a fandom. Most things that generate fandoms have years worth of source material, so how does a single movie generate that much interest?

And I doubt we'll have to worry about G5 G1-3 were over 30 years ago. Even in this world of rapidly rebooted franchises, I dont think G5 is likely to pop up for at least a decade. I could see the current fandom continuing to live for 2 years past the shows cancellation. After that its on life support with a smattering of die hards, unable or unwilling to just let go

- "Dialogue. More Dialogue" --> "Dialogue," character said. "More Dialogue."

- Character said, "Dialogue."
- "Dialogue." Action tag.
- "Dialogue." Actiontag. "More Dialogue."

- "Dialogue" – Action that occurs simultaneous to the dialogue – "More dialogue."
- "Dialogue–" Action that interrupts the dialogue "–More dialogue."

Three movies. Plus some "semi-canon" books/comics. A goofy, but entertaining kids show that had a few great lore episodes (that many regard as better than one of the movies).

There was plenty of content to use. It certainly wasn't the biggest fandom, even in it's peak in 97-98, but that made it all the better. Little drama. Few arguments over canon. And with no new official content, the fanfics could do as they pleased without glancing at the show every few weeks.

And now The Lion Guard's likely ruined all that. Good thing I hopped off the ride before it derailed.

I havent been there in ages, but I really doubt theres much activity in the galactica, andromeda, or even trek areas. and sci fi and fanfiction go together like stink on haitians.

Right now, in something I write almost purely to fuck around, I decided to see how over the top I could make her.
She
>Achieved what amounts to CHIM and can overwrite reality at her will. Things like creating energy from nothing strain her, however.
>Can output enough unicorn magic to make what amounts to making a small sun and containing it at the same time, for various minutes
>Since her body is merely an anchor for the external expectator she is now, she is virtually immortal. She can literally regenerate from a sterilizated skull within minutes and work with her organs being constantly liquified from the sheer amount of energy she is outputting with her unicorn magic alone
>Can force unicorn magic out of her wings for JET PROPULSION NIGGER
>By combining her own unicorn magic and the CHIM powers, she can move quickly enough to plasmify stone as she advances, going deep into the earth's crust, bearing the pressure and temperatures involved in such a thing, because of lol regeneration.
>To top this off, the CHIM is VERY heavily enchanced by her knowledge of physics (She creates an Alcubierre drive, for example)
She is fighting with another reality overwriter, so their fight consists of
>NO U
>NOOOO UUUUUU
>NOOOOOOOOOO UUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
>NOOOOOOOOOOOO UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't know if she'd laugh or cry at this.

Probably not.

I have a theory that she doesnt actually know how to read, she just keeps books around to make others think shes smart but in reality whenever shes 'reading' aloud shes really just pulling shit out of her ass. but due to amazing luck she just happens to be right more often than not. in other words, twilight will never know what i write about

Perfect solution. She won't be terrified because she can't read.

>Would Twilight approve of the fanfiction you've written?

Given that it's pretty much all been smut, I would expect her reaction to be >pic related

So my fic is almost done and its word count will probably land somewhere around 130k. I've been doing my best to cull unnecessary scenes and words to keep it focused, but 130k seems rather large to me (FoE and other doorstoppers notwithstanding; I find a lot of the super-long fics to be lacking in focus).

Anyway, let's talk about word counts. What do you think is a good length for a fic? What do you assume when you see a fic with 200k words or more? What's the longest fic you've written?
>>
>>27006194
As long as the fic is good and keeps me hooked, I don't mind the word count, no matter how big.

And then there's The Chase.
>>
>>27006194
I tend to look for fics with lengths between 70k and 300K words, with a stronger preference to the 120k-160k word range.

In general, assuming two fics are the same quality, I will always prefer the longer one, because it has more good content than the other, for a total higher "utility" or sorts, and because I like getting really engrossed in a story, and the longer it is, the longer I can lose myself in it. I have issues with stories in the 30k-70k range because they are just long enough for me to really get into them, then they end and I feel kind of blue balled.

Of course, the issue with long fics is that the more words a fic has, the more likely it is that those words are going to be filler/padding. I find that the 120k-160k is the maximum I can go for fic length without filler being a problem, hence my preference for that length, but I am willing to tolerate filler up until 300k+ words, at which point there's a good chance the author had no sense of pacing, especially since at that length you should have been able to split the story into a series.
>>

>>27006846

Just for kicks, I looked through all the stories I've read that are longer than 300k words, to see if they actually needed all those words.

http://www.fimfiction.net/story/19247/green - Okay, at this point this fic is actually at least three separate stories, with the characters checking up on each other every few chapters. Each of the stories is pretty good, although the main plotline is definitely dragging at this point and I have no idea what the endgame is supposed to be. Overall, this story could probably have used much tighter pacing, cut a few subplots, and finished in the 200k-300k range, although the subplots are interesting enough that I don't mind that it's taking so long to finish.

http://www.fimfiction.net/story/73404/through-the-well-of-pirene - I was actually surprised that this story was 369k words long. It feels tight enough and fast-paced enough that I didn't really notice. I guess having two protagonists sharing screentime equally will do that to a story. Still, I don't think the author could have shortened it much and kept the quality.

http://www.fimfiction.net/story/230097/crystals-wishes - 416k words of fluffly SoL with no plot. Technically, it could be condensed down to less than 50k words and conveyed the same information. But the point of this story was to show all the moments a character's life as she grows up, so I suppose for it's purpose it couldn't have been shorter. The writing style is quite sparse on details as it is.
>>
>>27006895
(continued)

http://www.fimfiction.net/story/119190/fallout-equestria - At 620k words, this could definitely have been a lot shorter. Like, maybe 250k words long or something. There's a ton of filler that works well for a video game, but not a book. Adding random missions is nice for padding out a game, not so much for a story.

http://www.fimfiction.net/story/18256/this-platinum-crown - Still hoping that he'll finish this 847k word and counting fic. I guess he could have shortened the story by cutting some of the subplots, but part of the fun is seeing how convoluted things can get. It's like reading ASoIaF (Game of Thrones): sure, most of the character arcs probably won't matter in the end, but it's nice to see a bunch of different perspectives on what's going on.

http://www.fimfiction.net/story/194448/piercing-the-heavens - So, 1.2 million words in and we still don't know who the main villain is. This one is definitely getting ridiculous. The style seems to be more Soap Opera than anything, which probably explains the length, but at this point I'm only along for the ride because I want to know who's behind all these unnecessarily grandiose plots.

http://www.fimfiction.net/story/98568/mlp-time-loops - 1.8 million words and counting but this one gets a pass because of the unique nature of its "story," and is really more a dumping ground for snippets than an attempt to actually write something coherent or consistent.

So, in total, that's 7 really long fics, three of which should probably have been shortened, one that definitely needs all those words to tell its story, two that could be shortened but probably shouldn't be because of their nature, and one that's special. So all in all, anything beyond 300k+ words in a bit excessive, but sometimes you really do need all those words to tell your story.

>What do you think is a good length for a fic?
That depends on the matter at hand.
Proper noun verbs a noun? 10k words maximum
plotless clop? 4-6k
clop with a plot? 8-10k
Anthro self insert? 0 words (is too many)
adventure? 100-400k

>What do you assume when you see a fic with 200k words or more?
its 20/80 chance that itl either be really good with some interesting worldbuilding or itll be complete shit with add meandering all over the place

>>27006411
yeah. if its good, its good
the only difference between reading DoaM and norsewords is that diaries is in one big chunk and inagaddadavita is split up into 12 servings.

>>27006846
are you me? because thats just about my feelings on the subject.

except for
>at that length you should have been able to split the story into a series.
that.
as mentioned above, a million words written by the same guy about the same characters is a million words written by the same guy about the same characters. I really dont see a significant difference between writing one all encompassing epic and writing 20 books focused on the same subject matter.
>>
The ending of the words is ALMSIVI.

>I really dont see a significant difference between writing one all encompassing epic and writing 20 books focused on the same subject matter.

In theory, each story is a series should wrap up it's major plot lines and maybe leave one or two things hanging, so you're less likely to end up with plot lines that drag out for half a million words. And sometimes it's nice to see characters placed in different situations that allow them to continue growing while mixing up the plots they're involved in. A lot series do this IRL quite well.

Of course, we're assuming that the authors are using series breaks as actual proper stopping points and not just cutting the story off every x words.
>>

>we're assuming that the authors are using series breaks as actual proper stopping points and not just cutting the story off every x words.
in fanfiction ending at an arbitrary stopping point seems to be the norm.
