Re-watching the premiere, I'm enjoying it much more the second time. It's a little weird because the A-plot (Flurry Heart's Crystalling) and B-plot (Glimmer's reunion with Sunburst) are entirely unrelated right up until the B-plot provides the solution to the A-plot's problems. Each could probably be re-written separated from one another.

Though the stakes are turned up, the A-plot may as well just be Baby Cakes again. I actually enjoyed Baby Cakes, but it's one of the worst received episodes in the show so it should be no surprise that going back to the "baby ponies are crazy" well is not well received here. Baby Cakes was a slow-paced episode comprised primarily by filler-jokes about parenting, which isn't really appropriate for a two-part season premiere. I get the sense that they had the high-concept idea of wanting an antagonist that was in no way, shape, or form villainous and which could not be fought.

The B-plot was superb. Spike and Starlight played off one another perfectly, in a way that Spike and Twilight did in earlier seasons, before she was Princess Fix-It. Where Twilight has "grown" as a character and in ability over time, Starlight's flaws are still raw and fresh--she can be conniving, manipulative, prone to outbursts of anger, and have deep reservations about all the lessons that have been drilled into every other pony from the show's start. Spike was able to do what he does best by playing the straight man to her eccentricities. The B-plot is weighted by the A-plot, so it seems to drag a bit, but every part there works just right.

My only real concern coming out of the premiere is overlap between Starlight and Twilight. If Starlight now serves to advance friendship problems for which Twilight is no longer suitable, how does Twilight get used? Does she get relegated to large-scale threat episodes only? It also opens and closes dealing with the issue of Twilight's newfound status--at the start she's awkward and apprehensive, but by the end she's empowered with the magic of all the princesses.

Season 3 is garbage.

Then there's the season-long tropes the show has come to use, like the keys in season 4 and the background Glimmers in season 5.

Like you'd think Starlight of all characters would know a charade when she sees one, since she fucking had one going on herself at one point, and yet she's all like "well he's wizard shaped, I mean come on".

And the whole predicament kicked off from the baby's magic being unstable. Okay, fair enough. But having it triggered by separating her from Pinkie? They couldn't have met in a room that wasn't holding the most precious relic holding their entire kingdom together? That's like letting a baby crawl across the control panel of a Boeing 747. Everything was to convenience the plot, none of it felt natural. They couldn't just have an episode that focused more on Sunburst and Starlight? Also, an introduction of a new main character and a baby? It's like the Cosby show nearing its end except three times faster.

Filly doesn't know how to deal with her emotions. So far she's settled on hugging your leg and screaming.

She just seems incapable of thinking when she was fighting her.

Look at all the bullshit Twilight has done, even before becoming an alicorn. For fuck sake she can reverse gravity on herself. She can teleport like there's no tomorrow. She has so many magic tricks that could distract someone during a fight it's not even funny.

Also in the S5 finale all Glimmer did was dodge and sometimes surprise attack Twilight. She bearly put any effort and after the past was fucked she'd relax. Meanwhile Twilight would go to a horrible future, waste time and energy and then waste even roe energy to cast the time travel spell.
And after that happened multiple times, she fianlly has a somewhat real fight with Glimmer and it ends up with a tie.
