Every now and then, I draw. But, since I've been waaay down in the dumps, I've been drawing more often than playing video games, writing, and maybe school work. I used to love drawing, I drew a comic everyday.
I had used stick figures because their bodies are more fluid and you can do funny shit with them.

After a year, I finally did a 3D background, but it wasnt the best, but I was improving, even adding shadows and shit.

3 years ago I hit a peak, I was doing full 3D backgrounds, objects, guns, and had shadows/shading.

Then I had to stop.

Take everybody's criticism with a grain of salt and see how YOU can improve.

Add stuff that YOU like into it. It' doesn't HAVE to be stricly show style, but as long as it's recognizable, you're good.

I literally hand drew nothing but ponies for a solid 6 months. So, yeah, I'm going to improve greatly because I drew every day, multiple faces and poses everyday.

Don't get discouraged because someone is better and or/faster than you. Use that to motivate yourself. Drive yourself into drawing better.

There are lots of tablets you can look up on amazon that are under 50$ that would be great starter tablets.
All you gotta worry about is pressure (I believe the base you need is 2048 levels of pressure) and I believe i've seen some 20-30$ tablets that have that requirement.

Drawing also helps me alot when I'm down in the dumps. When i'm truly depressed, I draw Caramel because she's so bright and lovely and seeing her just makes me so happy.

As somebody who used to draw alot of pony back in the day I'd suggest stop drawing them for art studies. I had an ask blog to force myself to draw and improve and it failed horribly, I only got better when I started drawing actual real life objects, human beings and more instead of trying to draw like a cartoon.

It's pretty much the reason I stopped the blog even though I had a good influx of follower questions, it just wasn't working.

It's okay to be proud every now and then. All artists have egos whether or not they're self-deprecating.

Personally I give two-shits if someone likes my art but it can be an added bonus and I appreciate it if someone does. I draw for myself first and foremost.

Drawing can be a very lonely thing. You have to spend countless hours with yourself and your problems. Every bad line and form is right in front of the artists and it's up to him to fix it and they're faced with those short-comings every time they decide to pick up a pencil. It takes a lot of self-exploration and that can be frightening to some people. They'd rather take a bullet to the head than spend more than 20 minutes with their own thoughts. So any moment I can have where I'm not having these negative emotions or thoughts I'm going to take.

This really depends. What are you trying to speed up? The basic under sketch for a simple pose shouldn't take you more than 10 minutes but there's nothing wrong with taking your time. Rendering takes time so just get used to that. It's all about what you considered "finished". how long did that piece on the right take you to complete?

I do quick studies with very sketchy lines as a way of moving quickly from subject to subject. I'll take my time if I really want to understand something of course. I usually just stick with basic values for my works since that's what I'm interested in. Lining, coloring, and rendering takes time so I don't really do that all that often. Especially if I'm in study-mode.

I've literally given up everytime I've tried to learn to draw
when you make something creative you automatically want to shit on it mostly because you feel like you should and could do better. I personally discourage myself too much and have a pathological hatred of anything I produce because of low self esteem. I used to use the lineart tool on sai all the time as I had unsteady hands. The left is really my first attempt to break away from it. The right is something that I'm working on now. Its not pony related really, but its probably the best thing I have to show the difference between the two times. I had a habit of making things way to complex back then and I'm trying to start over at simple and work up slowly again.

Fun fact actually my lines have always been that thick. The only reason they are smaller in the first, is mainly due to the size of the image being larger but the pen size being the same. Thing is every time I try to work with smaller lines I hate the finished image more than if I work on it with thicker lines. I've always liked thick line cartoony styles in general and me working with them more makes me more adept with them usually leading to something that I think looks a bit better. However I do need to use thinner lines, as it would help me move forward more. I'm thinking something around thickish lines for the outline and thinner lines for the inside.

I understand how one can simplify designs into simple shapes to aid in drawing. I've done quite a bit in working on that, mostly practicing it with human references. Its especially useful in drawing hands but also useful in most general cases. As for the pony thing it was a good idea to look over it again, I certainly remember the three circles thing but I have certainly forgot the whole thing about the leg and where the joints are located.

I get what you mean with the thick line "style" thing though. I do need to move away from it, its a sad day when I like my sketches more than my finished product.

Okay that makes more sense. The values you pick are going to make the biggest difference. The color almost doesn't matter as long as the value is lower than the other and you adjust the saturation. It's great that you're experimenting.

Instead of going too high in value (for example that yellow you're picking) perhaps you should pick more of a mid-value for the yellow and see how that turns out.

I agree with you. It's really important to branch out to other subjects. Especially still-life. But if someone wants to stick with pony I don't honestly see the harm in it as long as they take it to another level and try to improve. I've only been drawing for two years and that first year was a direction-less disaster. So much so that I almost quit entirely. I was going through the fundamentals but I wasn't having fun. Then I began drawing pony and realized I was actually having fun doing so. I had an audience and that made me want to get better and better.

Are you drawing every day? Stagnation like that only becomes that bad when you're not trying new things or you're not drawing everyday. Drawing once a week isn't going to cut it. It has to be a daily thing or you won't see steady results. Think of it as a video game and you're trying to "skill up" your abilities to see and think critically. Every mark you put down will attribute to your total "mileage" and you can think of it as leveling up. If you're not drawing you're not gaining experience. It's really that simple.

I dont really feel like there's such a thing. Getting inspiration from someone else's style just means that there's something that they're doing that you like and was inside of you to begin with. Your individuality is going to show no matter how much you think you're copying whether you think so or not. It only becomes an issue when you're only in "copy mode" and not really learning why the artist is doing what they do. They may have a better understanding of their style on an anatomic level and you do not. That can become an issue and the style ends up becoming bastardized. I did now a quick tutorial of how to be good without thinking for traditional art.

If you use tablet, use establish in Paint Tool SAI
If you want to use mouse, use Lazy Nezumi.
If you're on phone, I don't know, but if has layers you can use to fix the wrong parts of your drawing, I guess.

If youre having a hard time with anatomy? References are your friend. Look up poses and guides for that if need be. Stay in a drawfag thread and let someone redline for you and show you appropriate anatomy.

Once you have the basics of body shape done, you can mess around with style, which is the fun part, imo.

Ive never really come across an asshole drawfag on this board. They seem pretty cool and thats how i got a lot of help with my anatomy was participating in a drawfag thread for a little and talking to redliner anon. It was SUPER helpful.

I also started taking my art more seriously. So that helps.

My best friend. I feel really bad for her but at the same time I don't care. She's been drawing since middle school and it's been two years since she got out. Hasn't really improved at all. Pointy chins, unable to draw two eyes, etc.

I feel you there. I'm serious about getting better, but I have no formal training at all and have trouble getting legit feedback.
I'll hit up the drawthread for sure and hopefully a seasoned drawfag or two will highlight what I'm doing wrong and what I'm doing right.
I'm just worried that they might think I'm the next Zimbabwe
