I probably should. I'm still affected by it because I didn't catch the last three episodes (well, two if you count the finale as one) until today. Knowing they used a singer from "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" helped, too. I love it when the show draws on talent that only adults recognize.

Any action taken against them simply strengthens them, they cant be reasoned with, we know next to nothing about them.

Changelings are in contrast just another creature in the world that causes troubles for its inhabitants.

Sauron spoke in the appendecies though. And definitely in the Silmarillion. Some of his higher up servants did as well, like the Mouth, the Witch King, etc. They weren't talkative but they could deliver a line when needed. Speaking does not destroy the mysterious aura if its done when needed and in the right fashion. Sometimes its necessary to convey the required presence or situation.

Sombra seems based more on the Silmarillion Sauron anyway, who was a shadowy, shapeshifting guy who got into to song wars with elf kings and was much more personally involved in his factions conflicts

That kinda got me to thinking, what it a group of ponies refused to leave their ancestral homeland, and instead tried to fight the windigos?

Then as I followed that train of thought I got the idea of the Umbrum being an offshoot of Unicorns who became twisted after generations of exposure to dark magic. Sharing simmiliar features to Sombra (curves horns, snake like eyes, fangs, no longer able to get cutie marks) instead of being Spoopy scary Skeleington ghosts.

He could be related to the last kings of the unicorns, maybe unwilling to cede his power/birthright to the alicorns and running off and doing what he does.

He could also be related to the "eastern unicorns" which were mentioned as a distinct group in the season opener. That would sort of fit with his Sauron motiff too, as Mordor, the Land of Shadow, which Sauron ruled, was often referred to simply as "the east"

It's fun to speculate. I liked the idea of an offshoot race for unicorns like Earth and Pegasus Ponies have (Crystal and Bat Ponies), but nothing ever felt right. Then after the last comic arc I liked the idea of the Umbrum, just not how they went about it.

I also wanted to do something with dark magic, which has been all but forgotten.

Plus I had an idea that the realm of the Umbrum would be lit by two stones (one for the day, and one for the night), and a previous king had made three jewels from their light to put in his crown, as their splendor could not be matched even by the greatest jewel crafters
