So, question. How do you go about introducing players to a/some new skill(s) the character gets? Only thing that I can think up is to have them use it independently the first time, then it is on the table for later for players to use it. Also, should I give names to these things or not? They're only going to be really pertinent in battle, which isn't going to be a big part of the CYOA

And speaking of battles, another question! How is the best way to do them? I imagine unless the quest is specifically tuned to fighting, that numbers and the like aren't really necessary and a more narrative description is acceptable. I figure I'd ask though.

I think your intro will work well for the quest.
I only had a couple problems with the OP, and those were small quality things.

Character creation in CYOAs, how should it be done? I know YouGetToNameThe CYOA recently kinda went way overboard with it but I want to incorporate it into a CYOA I may run soon™.

If anyone remembers my previous post, it's the Wildfire in the Everfree Forest. Decided to call it 'Ground Zero' so people don't get it mixed up with the short lived mammoth quest

Essentially I'll let the players pick from a list of 'roles' in a squad. Each who have a semi-prefab backstory (just notes where they were born and a few other tidbits). Then they can choose their race/gender/design as usual. All of the roles they don't choose will become companion NPCs. The role will clearly outline the skills the character has though and give them a bit of a springboard for me and them to make them into a proper character rather than just a blank slate I'd like to try something where the players could suggest bits of backstory through dialogue. Not too sure how it'd turn out
