Welcome to the first post of the first thread of "You get to Name the".

This CYOA contains the following: Lack of Art, character creation, alternate Universe Equestria, stupid OC bullshit, and no anon.

Story so far: There doesn't seem to be a protagonist, but I guess there is still stuff. Equestria exist, cupcakes are given preferential treatment over muffins,

Twilight is a princess. Oh, and there is a lot of commotion amongst everyone invested in politics over a some letter that was delivered a week ago. But what

about that do you know? I dunno, we'll need to figure out what kind of pony you are first.
>>
You're a pony, that much is obvious. But WHAT kind of pony are you? Discuss, I'll put a poll up shortly to tally.

-Earth Pony: You're just as smart, but stronger and tougher than other kinds of ponies. Flying and magic is for jerks.

-Pegasi: Being a pegasi means flying, and that means having a unique perspective on things. You can fly (and even run) circles around most other ponies, and your mind is just as quick. The world can be a scary place, but your wings are a constant reminder of how easy it can be to 'get on top of things'.

-Bat Pony: You're... Different. Where as your more mundane kin often enjoy the attention they get for their quick antics, the attention you get makes you weary of getting any more. You have a legacy of betrayal stretching back to the Sister's Feud, the civil war that tore Equestria asunder; somewhere down the line your ancestor pledged themselves to Nightmare Moon. Being an inside-yet-outsider however has steeled your heart and mind, and having something to prove gives you determination.

-Unicorn: Magic is in your very nature, and most likely a major part of your life. A world of magic and wonder is constantly at your hoofs, from minor incantations to mighty displays of arcane might. Or at least, they are if you study and are gifted. For everyone else, well... Telekinesis can be pretty useful in any profession.
>>
wingless bat pony, because I play with handicaps
>>
Uh... Ok I'll bite

I think we should be Unicorns because everyone loves magic right
>>
>>25773113
Earth ponies are cool. They get to pick up ponies and use them as weapons against other ponies.
>>
>>25773272
Pretty sure Shining is a Unicorn.
>>
>>25773113
Unicorn is cool if training a lot unicorn can posses flight as well

>>

So is 4chan

So yes, that seems about right.

Fuck all this jewish shit. Be a Crystal Pony, my doubles demand it.

I can't make that into a quick and funny nickname though. Okay, maybe Getter, but anime belongs in the trash.
>>

All the ponies come in Crystal Variants. You just have to have Crystal Empire as an origin (Which is a choice to be made in the future)
>>

Variants don't come in Variants.

Also looks like Unicorn is winning the polls, I'll let it run for another five minutes then get onto the next part.
>>
>>25773901
We get to pick origins and other stuff like that too? Wicked. I vote we're the only unicorn from Cloudsdale, and we have learned to be very, very careful where we walk.
>>
>>25773939
Woah, slow down. We'll do this one step at a time. After all, you get to name the pony. We couldn't do that without naming the important parts of the life too right?
>>
>>25773946
Fair enough. I mostly meant that as a joke, but am pleased that you considered it to be something akin to a valid suggestion. I like the complete freedom you seem to be affording us in this process.

>>
>>25773946
I vote we name our GM "Our Bitch".
>>
>>25773982
We don't even know what species, gender, or age we are yet.
>>
>>25773984
Regardless, I agree with this anon.
>>
>>25773967
You have no idea, there are actually some numbers going on the in the background and yes, you can be a non-pegasus from Cloudsdale if you want. Just realize that the pony whose life your constructing will be shaped by all the choice YOU make about its life.

>>25773984
Species, we are Unicorns since they just won the poll!
>>25773982
Name oddly enough will be the last one, once we have the protagonist's life before us. Since Equestria seems to conspire to make fitting names.

Next comes gender. Since its such a simple choice, I'm not gonna put up a discussion buffer for it.

It's mostly called that because you get to name the basically everything about the protagonists life.

Once we get further into the story I'll put up a vote to see if people want to change the name, but for now this is a fitting name

I'm being stingy with information about the story itself because... Well, what the protagonist knows going into the CYOA is really dependent on your choices.

Also looks like Female is winning. Gonna give it a little more time

So you're both a lady and a Unicorn, but there is more than being a pony than just WHAT you are. Where are you from?

Appleoosa: You were born in the frontier town of Appleoosa. You're used to deal with roughness, both from others and the land itself.

Canterlot: You were born in the capitol city of Canterlot, the city of Nobles, High Life, and academia. Being a
Unicorn in such a city means doors open easier for you than others.

Cloudsdale: You were born in Cloudsdale, the fantastic city of rainbows and clouds. The only problem is, you're not a pegasi. You've learned how to think fast and move faster, but living in a world made for everyone but you has been harder on you than you might admit.

Crystal Empire: You were born in the sparkling Crystal Empire. Second only to Canterlot in its splendor, the city is home to experts of all kinds, from basket weavers to sculptors.

Griphonstone You were born an expat in the City of Griphonstone, and like its inhabitants you are strong and tough. From good natured brawls to vicious bullying, Griphonstone burns away weakness like slag from iron.

Manehatten: You were born in the city of lights and music. Living here means diversity, and its something you embraced. Your interests are as varied as the people you meet, and your comfort range is wider than most.

Ponyville: You were born in the cozy town of Ponyville. Here you've grown up in a peaceful and supportive environment. Home of the legendary elements of harmony and the princess of friendship, you've like-wise developed strong interpersonal and intellectual skills.

Roving Traders: You were born in a town somewhere, but you didn't stay there. Instead you traveled from city to city and town to town peddling wares. Along the way you learned the value of money.
>>
Well, while we're waiting, why don't we plan ahead? The only clue about the plot that the GM gave us was "there is a lot of commotion amongst everyone invested in politics over some letter" and "what the protagonist knows going into the CYOA is really dependent on your choices".

Personally, I want to know what the hell is going on. I say we try to be in politics or work in the palace or something so we don't start blind.
>>
>>25774305
Canterlot, for the reasons that I stated here >>25774309

>>
>>25774305
Griphonstone sounds interesing
but then again canterlot is for elitist unicorns like us
so that's where we're from
>>
>>25774340
May we're from a rich Canterlot family that summers in Griphonstone.
>>
Aww, I was hoping we'd get to be a stallion this time.

>>25774351
We can do that.
Or maybe a canterlot family that moved there halfway through our life?
Past connections to nobility and high class early education with a lot of time learning to be tough
>>
>>25774405
It might be even more interesting the other way around. We grew up around griffons, until our social climber parents decided to move us to Canterlot so we could get a proper unicorn education. Now we look like we belong, but have no idea how to be a Canterlot snob.

No idea man, I try to fight it but this outcome was predictable. I only hope that if there's a Great Being out there watching over us... It's not a nor/mlp/erson!
>>
>>25778112
I see lots of potential in waving wings with limited juice and possible resentment from less gifted pegasi for being a "fake pegasus."
>>
>>25778336
Interesting! I like the idea of limited flight, but I don't think we should have actual wings. How about a collapsable hing glider or something we keep in our backpack?

"Hey, you there, weather pony! Could you create a quick thermal updraft for me? I need to get to a higher cloud, and this thing was only designed to go sideways."
>>
>>25778500
Ooh, or we could go Pinkie Pie style.

"Hey look, it's that freak that always has a dozen balloons strapped to her back! Let's all point and laugh!"

I guess we'd also need to carry around a fan or bellows or something for thrust. Or maybe just tie something to our tail that we can wave? I don't know, we'll think pf something.
>>
Anyone have any thoughts on a reason why we're a Cloudsdale unicorn, anyway? Are we an ambassador from Canterlot? Are we some sort of genius unicorn meteorologist that works in the weather factory designing clouds? Are we a genetic mutant born to two pegasi? Or are we ordinary, and just have unicorn parents that need to live in Cloudsdale for whatever reason?
>>
>>25778500
>>25778570
That's why I like the idea of a unicorn with creative use of magic and materials to trying to fake it until they make it in Cloudsdale.

You gotta MacGuyver some form of lift and thrust, kinda like Scootaloo on steroids.
>>
>>25778639
Hell yeah! I didn't even consider creative use of magic. All we'd need is a parachute, a gust of wind spell, and a can do attitude!
>>
>>25778633
I think mutant is the only really compelling reason why we'd stay in Cloudsale instead of parents send us off to some boarding school or having pegasi attendants/lab assistants.

There must've been a Unicorn grandparent in our family tree somewhere.
>>
>>25778633
Pegasi parents.
>>
>>25776724
At the end of character creation, there will be a randomly rolled table, with five different good things and five different bad things.

Anyways, since last poll had so many choices we'll be narrowing stuff down.

>>
>>25779332
I don't think anyone else is going to vote.
>>
>>25779332
To clarify, will we be rolling for five good things and five bad things, or will we be getting a few rolls on a table that lists five good things and five bad things? If the latter, how many traits do we get to roll?
>>
>>25780113
Personally, I'd vote for the first one. That way we immediately get ten traits to help us form a new character.

At the very least, let us roll enough times to get both good and bad traits.
>>
>>25780113
It will be either be a single roll, or two rolls for a good and bad trait.

Also the finals for the origin are go now. Cloudsdale vs Crystal Empire

>>25781188
Allow me to rephrase then. After 8 active hours we're a unicorn mare in Cloudsdale.

>>25781199
The amount of time it took to come to this didn't increase the possibility of that happening.
>>
>>25781199
I'm still confused how a Unicorn living in Cloudsdale even works but whatever. Maybe it has the flutterwing spell active at all times and is extremely weak to the sun ala Icarus (or Rarity).
>>
>>25781221
There's tons of options.

Rarity wings, an enchanted medallion of cloud walking, pinkie style balloons, pinkie style gyrocopter, self-levitation, a pegasus aide.
>>
>>25781250
Given the season finale apparently they can make compacted clouds that non-fliers can walk on.
>>
>>25781277
Rainbow did that in Wonderbolts academy too. Imagine if we had our own special super-dense cloud that we had to ride around like a wheelchair.
>>
>>25781175
A Unicorn in Cloudsdale. But what was your life situation like growing up? Clearly your parents had the money to afford keeping a non-pegasus with them in the city, but there's still some choice available.

Orphanage: Your parents died shortly after you were born but left behind a great deal of wealth. In their will, they bequeathed 70% of it to the local government in which you'd be fostered in. Mid: Your childhood was comfortable. You had some nice things, and friends too. You did deal with bullies and unpleasantness due to your your lack of wings, but your parents have raised you to be well adjusted social. Sadly they could never adjust you physically beyond an expensive enchantment.

High: You grew up as a rich kid. You had the shiniest toys, the best food, and the most fantastic parties. Sure you get mocked by others for not having wings, but you realize that money trumps race; even the most bigoted bullies clamor to come to your parties. It's good having so many 'friends' because you'd get pretty lonely otherwise, seeing as your parents both love their job more than you. But that's the cost of money, natch.

Noble: You are special, different. Your entire life you've been told about how you're part of something timeless: the aristocracy. Your childhood is a strange mix of decadence and slavery. Your allowance makes grown ponies envious, yet you live under the oppressive gaze of your peers and parents who look for any opening to improve their own standing.

Sorry, I was cooking. Looks like Nobility wins. Congrats on being part of the elite of Equestria!

School of Hard Knocks: Nope

Adoption Tango: Nope

Part-Timer: Nope

Public School: Nope

Academy (Poor): Your family -while noble- was not exactly rich. You and your parents put a great deal of work into maintaining the illusion on splendor, and part of that was getting you into an Academy in the capitol of Canterlot. While the administration of course says you paid your way, that isn't true. Maybe you were impressive enough to get in via scholastic invitation. Perhaps your parents traded favors to get some accounting errors in place when the bills come to being paid. Even without talk though, other nobles know that your family's reputation is nothing more than paper-thin veneer, and treats you like the has-been family you come from. You do everything you have to in order to keep that veneer in tact.

Academy (Wealthy): You were enrolled into a predigious Academy as soon as you were old enough. The price was hefty but as a noble your family absorbed the cost easily. You are a unicorn, but the fact remains you are an outsider to Canterlot. In spite of those that heckle you in the polite manner of high life, you have a flair about you that gives you an undeniable magnetism. You may have two hooves in the sky, two on the ground, and no where to have any true roots, but that suits you just fine; you're prepping for your prime and damned be any who'd get in the way.

Apprenticeship: Nope

Private Tutors: You didn't go to a school, instead it came to you in the form of experts from around the world. You spent most of your days in your own home being lectured, practicing an instrument and refinement, and otherwise being groomed. If you didn't know better (and you do, your literature tutor made sure of that), you'd think that the idea of a gilded cage came from your life.

Migrant: Nope
>>
>>25782568
Private tutor or wealthy academy.
If we got tutored, where are the mean nobles? Are they neighbours?
>>
>>25782568
I like Wealthy and Private Tutors.
I'm gonna say Private tutors for maximum spaghetti spilling once we leave 'the gilded cage'.
>>
>>25782568
I like the sound of academy (wealthy), for one line in particular.

>you may have nowhere to have any true roots, but that suits you just fine
>you're prepping for your prime and damned be any who'd get in the way

Fate dealt us a harsh hand, and we flipped fate off and said that we're going to be awesome anyway.
>>
>>25782634
Good point. Wealthy it is. We need to have schoolmates to make fun of the fact that we have pegasus mannerisms.

>>
>>25782634
You're parents can love you and be mean too.

As a noble, you have a lot of expectations. You fulfill them, you're the star of the show. You fail, suddenly you are worse than that shit in the dirt that the worms eat.

>>25782750
As a noble, only the best schools will do (for bragging rights), and Canterlot has too much prestige behind it to not go to Canterlot's premier academies. Don't worry, you're about as at home in Canterlot as you are in Cloudsdale.

http://www.strawpoll.me/6280588

Here we go
>>
>>25782800
It's not neccesarily fabulous, personal magnetism could be from many different kinds of personalities. Maybe she is crass, but always in a 'sauve bastard' kind of way. Or maybe she is a show off, but also good enough to almost meet her own boasts.
>>
>>25782819
I like to imagine that we are a great and powerful charismatic liar. I'm not a unicorn, I'm an alicorn. I maintain an illusion spell for the sake of all you fucking plebs. Now get the hell out of my way.
>>
>>25782905
Pretty sure people would just fucking laugh at you. You'd be lying to other nobles, they'd know who's an Alicorn.
>>
>>25782927
It was a deliberately ridiculous example. I just meant that I imagined her with that Trixie style self-importance and willingness to stretch the truth.
>>
What rank are we being groomed for anyway? What title do we stand to inherit? Princess? Countess? Viscountess? Baroness? Lady? How much clout are we talking here? Do we get a tiara or other sparkly hoozits that we can lord over everyone who bullied us?
>>
>>25783164
Unless you get material wealth as one of the positive traits, or you chose something during the "real life" module (if you chose to that far, character creation can end at Academy if people want) you'll be unlanded. Which means you'd be just a Lady.

Speaking of, Rich Academy is winning.

Do people want to continue to real life or start right out of academy?

2 Dark Secret: You have a secret, one so terrible that its revelation would ruin your life. Now no matter how hard you try to hide it, paranoia always creeps back to you. Loose ends, forgotten evidence, a slip of the lips; any moment and your entire world could come crumbling down.

Seven twice. We are double nobles.

Congratulations, everyone. We're a princess.
>>
>>25784415

>>
>>25784439
The GM said that noble only got us up to the title of "lady" unless we rolled the noble heritage trait, and we got it twice. See discussion here:
>>25783164
>>25783267
>>
>>25784457

>>25784439
I was just commenting that two people posted with the same end number. You're not actually a double noble. It will mean you have title though.

>>25784509
Sadly no. It has a tie in to the overarching plot of the CYOA

>>25784600
I'll just let you guys throw designs out and I'll pick one I guess?

Still writing up the summary
>>
>>25784638
After all the discussions and voting on everything else, picking our appearance is just going to boil down to "you guys do whatever you want and I'll pick one afterwards"? No debate or strawpoll or anything else like the rest of character creation?
>>
>>25784669
Feel free to debate, I'll toss it in a strawpoll if only a few ideas come up, but if everyone throws ideas I'll just execute some executive authority.
>>
>>25784638
Teal coat with a golden hued mane. Very long mane and tail that's done up nicely. Ruby-ish eyes?
>>
>>25784688
I say we go with a white coat. We're noble, and I associate the color with aristocratic ponies, thanks to Celestia, Rarity, and Blueblood. Thoughts anyone?
>>
>>25784703
NOT NOBLE ENOUGH.
Our coat is GOLD!
Our mane is BRONZE!
Our eyes are LITERAL DIAMONDS!
>>
>>25784725
Anon, you have convinced me. Light golden coat, dark bronze mane.

Literal diamond eyes sound painful, though. How about rubies, as suggested by >>25784695
>>
>>25784638
Pale/mild blue-violet coat
Orange(ish) mane, maybe a single colour streak?
Yellow or grey eyes
>>
>>25784745
I don't really like the sound of brown on yellow. I was hoping that the teal would give the gold mane some contrast. Make it pop, yaknow?
>>
I say we just grab bits of all the suggestions.

>>25784703
White coat.
>>25784761
Orange main with a single streak in it.
>>25784725
The streak is bronze.
>>25784695
Ruby eyes.
>>
>>25784781
So ruby red eyes or rubies for eyes?
Or a ruby fake eye?
>>
>>25784781
What about build? Sleek and tall? Our parents are pegasi after all.
>>
>>25784805
That fits. We should be more slight than the average unicorn, considering our heavy pegasi leanings.
>>
Main and tail style? I imagine something with a bit of flair, since we're not just a noble but a rich and important landed noble.
>>
>>25784805
Sleek for a unicorn, but slightly pudgy for a pegasus.
I'm alright with any height.

>>25784823
Straight hair, but tied up in a bun with a fringe/bangs what covers one eye

not sure what to put for the tail though.
Maybe a little jewellery too? Earrings? A necklace?
Strobe light gemstones?
>>
>>25784927
I like the straight hair with bangs covering one eye, but could we have a ponytail instead of a bun? We're fresh out of the academy, and a bun feels a bit too severe for someone as young as we are.

And jewelry, definitely. We're rich.
>>
>>25784792
Ruby red sounds ok to me
>>
Well, I can't wait any longer for the GM. I have work in the morning so I'm heading to bed. Hopefully our backstory and appearance end up being cool. I'll find out in the morning.

I can barely keep my eyes open. I'm sorry guys but I'll have to finish this tommorow (all the neato stuff I wrote decided to crash and not save when I fell asleep).

Something for you guys to discuss though

Do you want to play out the dark secret?
Or just have it summarized too?

If you wanna play it out, the Summary will be an 'outside view' of how your life has gone.
If you want it in the summary, like it says on the bottle it'll be in the summary.
>>
>>25785883
Play out the secret.
Maybe some minor detail will come in use later.
>>
>>25786298
Yeah, just a little tantalizing tidbit.
>>
>>25785883
I want the barest hint of the secret, but want to play out the details. Maybe just tell us how old we were and where it happened, but not what it was. That way we can still try to avoid spilling the beans, but we don't get to know what we're protecting.
>>
>>25787041
At the very least, please tell us who else knows our secret.
>>
Page nine bump.
>>
I guess I should have been more clear in what I meant.

By playing it out, I meant actually running a scenario from the past (that would no doubt involve railroading because it being in the past and all).
>>
>>25789341
Oh, that's what you meant? Just tell us then. You said "railroading", and there's no need for us to play out the past if we can't affect its outcome.

After all, it's not really a choose your own adventure if the things we choose don't shape our own adventure.
>>
>>25789769
On the other hand, maybe it'll help us bet a feel for the character and her personality, as well as introducing us to your narrative style.

Yeah, okay. Let's play it out. I can think of this as a semi-interactive tutorial mission instead of a railroaded first quest.
>>
>>25789341
I'd rather have it as a summery. Playing it out feels like trying to define to much of the character at once.
>>
>>25789769
>>25789791

Yup. That's a good way to put it: an introductory tutorial that also gives me insight of my players (so I can better craft the story around them), and players insight of my GMing style (and revealing the dark secret in something other than a boring 'tl;dr')

But I guess I'll put it to a vote (if the combined total of options that aren't flashback wins, I'll just do a secondary vote to determine which of those win)

Childhood:

> You're a noble from the city of Cloudsdale, the capitol of all things pegasus.
> The problem was however in your childhood is that you were not, in fact, a pegasus
> You were —and still are— a Unicorn.
> Noble tradition in Cloudsdale would have you abandoned at a terrestial orphanage
> For some reason though your parents refused; speculation abounds

> Perhaps they wanted a child who could woo the Canterlot elite.
> Maybe they wanted to make a statement and stand out by rejection tradition.
> Or, they could have just hated the idea of giving up their own child.
> Whatever the reason, you would never be sure.

> Your childhood years were challenging, but your —or rather your family's— position took the edge off.
> As soon as you were old enough to handle it, you were given a crystal-dust tattoo that to this day binds a cloud-walking enchantment to you.
> Your parents also gave you everything you could want as a child, provided you didn't embarrass them.
> As nobles, you quickly learned their definition of embarrassing transgressions was very, very wide.

> The constant fear of making mistakes however eventually gave way to actual socialization.
> And you learned things.
> Like how to deal with adversarial ponies
> How to turn enemies into friends
> And how and when to stab people in the back.
> You started fitting in, at least with those that didn't have their heads a millennium in the past.

> Physically though you didn't fit in
> Athleticism was just part of your life, because it was necessary to push yourself every day for even the simplest travels through the city.

> As for a cutie mark, you didn't get yours til the end of your childhood, just before you were sent off to a fancy academy.
> Cutie Marks of course are a momentous, and the events leading to their acquisition are too.
> Or at least, that's how it should be.
> You literally got yours in your sleep, a [Magic related cutiemark. Time to design]

School

> One year later you found yourself inundated in admission tests, as your parents pushed to get you into the best —see 'makes the best bragging subject'— academy they could find for you.
> That meant sending you to Canterlot.
> Despite pegasus pride, Canterlot simply held too much sway over noble society to be ignored.
> ANY noble worth anything went to a Canterlot academy, period.

> For their side of things, academies in Canterlot knew this and discriminated with extreme prejuidice.
> Being the smart, savvy, fit, beautiful, and well endowed (talking about Cutie Marks here) pony you were ofcourse meant even the most prestigious institutes would take you for consideration.
> The fact you were going to have a Barony of your own one day, from which you could give alumni donations, from also helped.
> With all things considered, you ended up in THE academy.
> THE Canterlot Institute of Academia, to be exact.

> When you first moved to Canterlot, you were gleeful.
> It was full of people like you, so you assumed that you'd finally be able to fit in.
> That was wrong though; you shared their bodies but not themselves.
> Where they spoked in a 'refined' manner, you were direct.
> Where you were strong and enduring, they were cultured and delicate.
> Pegasi and Earthpony nobles alike had figured this out too, and either changed or formed like minded cliques.
> You were unable to get into pegasi cliques, and too different to fit in.

> The culture shock of having to start from zero again socially was enough to set you behind.
> You did perfectly with academic and physical subjects, but you floundered with your magical studies.
> The stress got to you, and it expressed in poor magical execution.
> However, after two years of frustration, you finally found your stride and hit it running.

> Suddenly you were one of the top students.
> You made it on the deans list
> Won scholarships (even though you really didn't need them)
> You even made your parents proud.
>>
> As a pony with a magic related cutie mark, your final test was a magical practicum.
> There was more than just one practicum recital though.
> There were several, with participants being chosen based on their skill level.
> They said it was for the sake of safety, but it was mostly just to frame the best students and show them to the world.
> Showing off is one of the best ways to build prestige.
> You found your way into the first tier of practicum easily.
> The test was simple: cast a two-pony spell that you have five minutes of prep to understand, with another student chosen randomly from the first tier of the practicum.
> Oh, and the dean apparently had enough clout to get Twilight to attend the first tier proceedings.
> Just more opportunity to show off the best the Institute had to offer.

> You were to perform with a stallion, Emberswirl.
> Your performance would be almost right in the middle of the practicum, so you'd need to not only be better than those before you, but also stand out so much as to not be forgotten.
> Not to graduate though, but to make the only real currency that matters outside of bits: respect.
> You had no trouble doing your part when it was your turn to present.
> Emberswirl however did not, not only did he mess up the spell but he did so dangerously
>>
> A Fireball engulfed the stage, spreading through the audience.
> Or at least it would have if you hadn't suplexed the spell into submission in a display of magical supremacy.
> The practicum continued, but not as if it hadn't happened: you were clearly best of show.
> Afterwards, Twilight took the top five pairs plus you (Emberspark was too busy being humiliated for his failure to make it six pairs) for a casual chat.
> She was probably also put up to it by the dean, but that's politics.

> Twilight pandered to each of the groups somewhat unenthused, asking them about their spells and how well they knew the theory.
> Also some questions about friends and how they fared at the school.
> Those others had their envy stoked when she actually took interest in you.
> Impressive, she said with actual praise behind the words.
> She talked about how interesting it was to actually see a secondary alignment happen.
> Put short, you were interesting to her and that was more than ninety-nine percent of nobility could say.
> Even five months later, two months after you graduated and had inherited formally the 2nd Hayseed Swamp Airstate, she was interested enough in you to send you a letter.

Secondary Alignment: Sometimes (incorrectly) referred to as a realignment, a secondary alignment is when a pony goes through an advent similar to that of getting a Cutie Mark. Instead of actually getting a cutie mark though, the existing cutie mark is either strengthened or adjusted in some way. This is an extremely rare occurrence, and defies the traditional knowledge of cutie marks.

>>25794445

I kinda meant it was a portmanteau of airspace and estate. It means its a legal estate that is about airspace ownership.

Having an Airstate means you can levies taxes for weather production/control, as well as exercise executive right to tamper with the weather (to a limited extent. You can't just turn a forest into a desert just for laughs, or turn a desert into a swamp). Responsibilities include: stopping cloud poachers, protecting the airspace, stopping or redirecting weather disasters, etc.

As for Hayseed swamps, its a pretty backwater place, but it has some the the best rain quality around. Most of the Airstate's income comes from taxing and regulating rain trade with Appleoosa.

While being a Baroness is a big deal, given how prestigious (and easy to run) the other estates are, Etherbreeze got the short straw; the airstate doesn't run itself, and isn't particularly glamorous. Most of the inhabitants are swamp folk, farmers, and the occasional merchant. The largest TOWN is probably one hundred ponies at most.

Also http://www.strawpoll.me/6287898 because I stupidly forgot to post it earlier, derp. This is really the last poll before we start.
>>
>>25795015
So we just own the air then?
>>
>>25795066
I believe so
>>
>>25795066
Eyup. You get to tax and manage the air. That means if someone wants to hire pegasi to get some sun, you get to tax them. Someone wants to take rain, you tax them. Someone wants to bring some hot air from the south through? You get to tax them. Someone poaching your rainbows? You get to jail them.
>>
>>25795066
Its like owning real estate, one imagines.
>>
>>25795116
Anyone else want to support the logical economy by lowering taxes?
>>
>>25795133
Not without knowing what's going on in the local economy, no. We need more information about everything if we want to make any informed political decisions.
>>
>>25795164

Looks like Tidbit of Dark Secret won. So have a canceled tabloid story.

Tidbit:
Note to Editor, from THE BOSS: "Ignore everything Second Lens says. Yes, I know he makes crazy tabloids to spook people, but this one is just too hot; I'm not sticking my head out to let some crazy say that the Princess of Magic was full of it. Get a contract with him to keep this exclusive, and keep him thinking we're gonna run the story. He'll eventually get bored and move on to something new, and when he does burn every last copy of this crazy story."

> The pony Etherbreeze is something of a one-hour-celebrity
> She saved the top students of the Institute of Academia, attending professors, and the audience when her randomly chosen partner caused a spell mishap that threatened to turn into a firestorm.
> Twilight also elaborate further in interviews about the incidence (and other experts were quick to agree with her) that Etherbreeze was especially talented with magic, so much that she had a Secondary Alignment (aka, double-strength cutie mark) advent when bringing the spell under control.

> Yet things aren't as they seem.
> Looking back at old articles from her home city of Cloudsdale, weirdness starts coming up.
> For example, there isn't a single article about Etherbreeze getting her cutie mark.
> Despite the fact that even everyday Joe and Jane ponies get pony interest stories about getting cutie marks, this daughter of a highly respected and powerful aristocrat had nothing?

> But things get even more strange, which is saying something if we're talking about a unicorn born in the sky.
> I've been putting my skills to the test, finding the unedited records of interviews that her friends have done about her.
> There's no mention of her being good with magic, ever.
> In fact, a few stories recount how Etherbreeze struggled to cast the simplest of spells.
> You know, the kind that even children master before they enroll in higher education.
>>
>>25795569

> Fast foward though, to the second quarter of her third year, suddenly she is scoring in the top of her magic practicum classes.
> The for her final practicum test, she gets teamed up with someone with a notable talent for fire (he even had a big exclusive interview with our parent company, the Canterlot Trot, about the fireworks displays he did).
> And then despite his mastery of fire, he screws up a non-fire related spell at turns it into a fiery cataclysm?
> One which our suddenly masterful Etherbreeze manages to bring under control infront of some of the most powerful ponies in Equestria?
> How doessomeone so incompetent at magic suddenly become the brightest light in the most respected institute in Equestria and impress a princess?
> Simple: you don't.

> You are Etherbreeze, inheritor of the Clearsky's airstate in the Hayseed swamps area.
> Your mansion floats lazily above the largest town below your sphere of influence: A bustling town of thirty three ponies called All-Weather.
> Your office however is situated directly below your mansion, allowing you to attend to all races who have skybound affairs.

> Despite the tranquil nature of the 'cozy' town, you're busy managing the technical aspects of your duties.
> Your cousin, the late Blue Squall, had died with an unfortunately messy office.
> His official business was like-wise a mess.
> Ignored paperwork now dominated your office in stacks of boxes like skyscrapers would the city of Manehatten.
> Most days you made it less ignored, but right now you weren't giving it any thought.
> Instead you focus on the scroll that your aide Paperbloom has just delivered.
> He had left just moments ago, the door still swinging shut behind him.
> But you were staring so intently at the royal seal that time crawled.

> It was the signet of a princess, Twilight to be exact.
> The one whom you had spent three afternoons and one evening with, spread out over the five months since you were introduced to her.
> You feel ice pool in your lungs as you carefully peeled open the letter with your magic.
> Every moment you had spent with the princess had been hell.

> Not because she was unkind, but because she was so smart.
> Every second you spent with her, regardless of location or reason, were seconds you spent anxiously hiding behind conversation and pleasantries.
> Personal correspondence between you and her felt like unknowing interrogations; the thought of meeting her in an official capacity terrified you.
> Thus the icy pains in your lungs.

"To Etherbreeze Clearsky. Baron of the third, fourth, seventh, and twelveth airstates of Hayseed Swamp."

"I am writing to officially extend an invitation to discuss, among other invited peers, the recent diplomatic overtures from Torrento. Should you deign to accept, set alight this letter. Otherwise please keep it safe for one week, after which you may do with it as you see fit."

> The letter then ends with the general good will 'yours truly'.

> Your lungs thaw and you pace around your desk to your lounging chair and sink into it, letter in tow.
> As you should have expected, it was nothing to worry about.
> Well, it was something to worry about, but it wasn't about what you were worried about, which is to say it was a good worrying and not the bad kind.
> You shake your head to clear your thoughts.

> The letter was about Torrento, a very serious subject that no doubt had every major court in Canterlot ablaze with life.
> Presumably you were being called for counsel, as your estate was very close to treaty line that has been in force for over a thousand years.
> You float the letter to the firepit and watch as it burns into plumes of green smoke.

> It wasn't until after the ashes dissipated into the smoke that you realized something odd.
> There was no date, no address for venue, just an invitation.
> You sink into your seat further as you reach out with your magic to close your blinds.
> Suddenly you have a lot more to think about
----
What do suggestions:
>Ask about ingame stuff (since Etherbreeze might know things you don't)

> You take a seat in front of Paperbloom's desk and finish stirring your tea.

"I believe your brother's letter to you about it was roughly two days after they left."

> It was pleasant you didn't have to ask the next obvious question; you simply gave your aide an inquisitive raised eyebrow.
> Gave you time to actually drink some tea rather than just smell it.

"That would be roughly enough time to get from here to Canterlot by train if you took the on-hoof parts quickly."

> So that meant you barely missed seeing the envoy of whomever this mystery figure from Torrento.
> There wasn't much else to say though about that affair though, mostly because hardly anyone knew anything about Torrento.
> The city itself was somewhere in the mountains that separated the rest of Equestria from the badlands.
> Powerful wards that were supposed constructed during the sister's war still stood there, preventing any attempts of scrying.

[Ask for preparation, part 2/3]

> It was frustrating not being able to get more information, but getting angry over it wouldn't help anyone.
> You spend a few minutes unwinding from your previous paper work crusade, watching Paperbloom go about his work as you drank you tea and write an unassuming note.
> When the cup was finally emptied, you washed it in the small sink next to the hot water dispenser and returned it to its rack.

"By the way, Paperbloom. I need you to do something for me" you say as you float the note to his desk.

"I need you to prepare a steamer trunk for me, everything I'll need should be on the note there."

> Paperbloom slides the note to the one clear spot on his desk as he responds.

"Yes'm. I'll get to it after this batch of letter. Have a good one."

> Normally this would have been a job for a maid, but your Mansion was severely understaffed at the moment.
> Most of the bodies that worked the left as soon as it changed hands.
> The previous Clearsky had a reputation for being an angry pony, no doubt the gentle folk had left as soon as he fell into a grave.
> What little trust you could afford as a noble however, you gave to Paperbloom.
> While not a stoic butler, he was far from being a degenerate.
> That and his wife Tea would stop making him her namesake if she found him with another mare's garments.
> That would be a travesty for sure.

> Sure that such a catastrophic will not happen, you return to face the towers of papers.
>>
>>25796729
Yep. Took some repeated processing throughout the dialogue before I figured out who was saying what exactly.
>>
[Slay the paper work 3/4]

> Upon reentry to your office proper, you spend the rest of the day and most of the night.
> The last week you did this work of gonig through papers at a leisure rate.
> As long as they got done before the Rain right auctions in spring, they were fine.
> With an unknwon date now looming over your head, and no idea how long you might be removed from your office, suddenly you were much more motivated.

[A ROLL HAPPENED]

> The work was exhausting and tedious.
> Most of the papers were receipts of taxes, tax agreements, or confirmations for the rain auctions.
> Yet you had to scan each one to make sure they were put together properly with whatever brother and sister papers they were supposed to be filed with.
> Sometimes you also ran accross other, more serious things.
> Like discarded reports of cloud poaching, or storm dumping.
> Those you had reconfirm with the guard.
> That was a special kind of fun, mostly because of how your realm was operated.

> Most realms have their own guard and enforcement.
> Most realms also have atleast one sizable population center from which to draw said enforcement.
> The Hayseed Swamps however only had one large city, and it was part of Princess Luna's demesne.
> Thus anytime infractions happened that require a response greater than 'there is a criminal, catch them', local barony had to appeal to the region's duke.
> When your duke is also your princess, things get awkward.
> This wasn't because Luna was a tyrant (far from it, she generally left things alone unless one of the barons got uppity), but because all the barons were constantly trying to get her favor (since favor from Luna the duchess, was also favor from Luna the princess).
> Thus whenever a request for enforcement happened, the other baronys would try to figure a way to profit from it.
>>
[success - politics]

> Many of the more recent paperwork would have been discounted as droll, but you quickly catch onto suspicious strings.
> Your cousins poor health before his death was not a secret.
> Coinciding with his failing health, was an increase in the number of complaints in your airstate.
> Complaints of poaching, storm dumping, even raiding.
> A little research into these matters however revealed that almost all of them were fabrications.
> A trap to embarrass a young baroness like yourself who, upon receiving their title, would blindly follow through with the paper work and flood the duchess' court with fake reports.
> At best, it would be assumed that the newly fledged aristocrat was clumsy.
> At worst other barons would say you were fraudulently trying to secure more resources for your barony, and enrich yourself in the process.

> Too bad for them however, that trick wasn't going to work.
> Too bad for you however, that trick did keep you up until rising of the sun.
>>
>>25796821

>>
>>25796838
agreed we should minimize our resources to an acceptable level and write everything down for a clear report and an apology.
>>
[Minor Failure - Investigation]
[Success - Politics]

> Now that you've got a pile of fraudulent complaints, its time to tie them to people.
> You get yourself another cup of tea and open the blinds to help keep yourself awake.

> Two hours later however, nothing.
> The complaints are about nothing that actually happened, but you can't actually find actual proof of foul play in all but one of the minor complaints.
> Even then, there is nothing to tie it to anyone else.
> If there was, the baron could simply argue that the lack of verifiable information was due to the age of the complaint.

> You drag your face across the desk.
> Even in catching the ploy, you only ended up in net zero.
> Trying to report this would just build you a reputation of being a petty finger pointer.
> Even bringing it up would give everyone a bad taste.

> For now, you take the papers and file them away under lock and key.
> Maybe one day these documents will be valuable, to either yourself or someone else, but for now they are just pieces of paper.
> You then pass out on your couch, to tired to ride the gondola up to your proper mansion.

> You wake to the sound of muted laughter.

> The outside that is in that mid-day kind of mood.
> You remember you stayed up too late (or early).
> Getting up from off the couch you round the now empty folders and boxes that scatter your office and peek out the door

> Your aide's desk is neatly sorted, the papers that had littered it yesterday are now neatly stacked in the various 'outgoing' boxes, or in one of the many file cabinets.
> Paperbloom himself is in the corner with the hot water dispenser, conversing with another pony: his wife Tea.
> She's an earthpony, earthen green coat and a dark brown brown mane, contrasted to her husband's porcelain coat and his well kept but receding black mane.

[Success - Sneaky]
[Success - Perception]

> You retreat mostly back into your office, and pull back the door until just a sliver is left open for you to listen through.
> Tea is casually talking about her day, and asking about his.
> It's just the back and forth of two people close to each other for fifteen minutes.
> Then Tea asks about Wintergrass, and he goes quiet.

[Failure - Local Knowledge]

> The way they talk about it, its some sort of tradition, but never one you've heard of up until now.
> Paperbloom eventually breaks the silence by saying that there is a chance he won't be available for it.
> Tea doesn't like this at all.
> The two 'discuss' the issue, but the whispers get so feverish and charged that it becomes hard to actually follow what they are saying.

The ink used for enchanting tattoos is made from crushed Crystal from the Crystal Empire. The dust is mixed with a reactive pigment (Usually one that doesn't stand out too much, but can be changed to stand out with a simple spell). The designs are arcane geometries that work as a focus. To explain:

All ponies are like circuit, they have magic that pushes through those circuits. Pegasi are faster due to their innate magic, Earth Ponies are strong (and sometimes have green thumbs) because of it.

Unicorns are special because their horns are like special re-programmable circuits. They shape the circuit, push magic through it, and then get an effect known as a spell.

Enchanted tattoos are like attaching an extra circuit in the shape of a spell, to a pony. The static artificial 'circuits' of the tattoo integrate into the natural 'circuits', and become part of their natural magic.

A badly done tattoo could have horribly lethal effects (It could throw the pony's "circuits" out of whack, it could cause magical 'leaks', or the spell my be done wrong and lead to all sorts of complications).

Properly done however, these circuits are well balanced and run off of the 'fumes' that would have been wasted by the body anyways, thus being both permanent AND less straining than casting actively through a dynamic focus (like a horn).

tl;dr Tattoos are a powerful way to focus a pony's innate magic. They are potentially very dangerous, but safe when done properly (But since every pony is so different, each design has to be custom made with lots of judgements. Its an art more than a science). Etherbreeze's tattoos has a cluster on her shoulders, with thin lines that travel down to a cluster on her sternum and then divide out to the legs where they form complex ring below the knees. They are an extremely faint blue, but the ink is made to respond to a diagnostic spell, under which is deepens into a very contrasting crimson.
>>
>>25801935
The location and faintness make sense. Our parents probably didn't want to call too much attention to it.

>>25801383
This. Maybe Wintergrass is a local tradition and maybe not, but we shouldn't make assumptions. If he wants to talk about it he will, otherwise we shouldn't press him on it with anything more than "is everything all right?"

> You close the door the last sliver, quietly letting the handle cock back into place.
> Emotions are currently mulling in your chest and heart, while your thoughts mull in your head.

> Admittedly, you don't know much about All-Weather.
> In fact you don't know much about Paperbloom either.
> You met him less than a month ago, when he approached you.
> He wanted to get ahead in politics, he said.
> He was half-again your age, and was perpetually stuck as a paper pusher.

> You ignored it completely and hired him because he was the only qualified person you could find.

[Success - Lying (Pretending to just wake up)]
> You trot slowly out of your office into the lobby, in control but lethargic in step.
> Stopping for a moment, you (pretend) to get your thoughts in line with a deep inhale, calling Paperbloom to attention.

"Oh, Lady Etherbreeze." He scrambles in his chair to face you.
"While you were working I finished the front-end paper work, and prepared your steamer trunk."

> You can see your steamer trunk, a fresh new duties stamp on it, by the door.
> With give a thankful nod as you take a seat at the other side of hi desk.

"By the way, I've was wondering, if its nothing to personal-"
> As you said the words you were regretting it.
> You could see his gaze darken as your words continued through verbel momentum.
"-what is Wintergrass?"

> An eerie silence, much more oppressive than the one that had been between Paperbloom and his wife, spread across the room.

> Then he was silent.
> It wasn't until the gravity of the situation threatened to collapse your lungs did he finally say something.

"I can have my things packed by tomorrow."

> Paperbloom's voice was not angry like you were expecting.
> It sounded deflated.
> You easily clued into the fact he wasn't talking about taking a trip to Canterlot.
> That didn't make you any less confused about what he was talking about.
> He levels his eyes to yours.
> You just shake your head, and respond calmly.

"What are you talking about?"

> You try to remain calm and quiet, but he explodes.

"What am I talking about? Don't you chide me! You think your the first one to be a smartass?" Paperbloom slams his hoof against the floor, shaking the desk and knocking off one of the tea cups, that shatters on the ground. He ignores it as he stomps to the door to grab his coat and put it on.

"Why don't you-" He pauses to pull the sleeves from his coat up his forelegs. "-just grow up and get rid of me, I have enough in my life as is. I don't need some pompous entitled brat toying around with my second execution."

> He marches right infront of you and looks you in the eyes.
> Suddenly he seems menacing in a way you never thought he could be.
> Your expression changes little though.
> You don't repeat yourself, but you can see him play your last words again in his mind as he looks at you.
> His face contorts from rage to defeat again.
> With a weak laugh he falls into the visitor bench next to the entrance.

> He called you a brat, and addressed you like an adult would address a common child.
> Anger bubbled up inside of you, but you pushed it aside.

> After a moment of stirring your tea, he quietly relented an apology: "Sorry".
> It was a start.

"You were half-right about one thing, Paperbloom" you began, carefully chosing your words to pad his self-esteem.

"I'm not a brat, but I am... New, to the actual reality of this. All of it. Even I of noble blood need help, and you're the one whose been so helpful this last month."

> You take a sip from your tea, then continue.

"Politics, economics, big words and ideas. They're useless to me without something real to apply them to. I was not prepared at all to inherit this estate, but it was necessary given my late cousins unfortunate departure."

> Setting the tea down, you magically open one of the filing cabinets and bring out a folder and lay it next to Paperbloom.

"Do you recognize this?" You ask, no trace of smugness in your face or tone.

> You aide takes it up and opens it, shaking his head confused.

"The... Haversack storm request? I do but, what does this have to do with anything my Lady?"

> You smile knowingly, and flip the page of the request paperwork to the next page.
> It was a summary of the case, signed by Paperbloom.

"If you recall, this was the first form you submitted to me after review. You probably just remember it as more paper pushing, but that summary is far more informed than a paper pusher's opinion."

> You take another dramatic pause, taking a sip from your tea as you see Paperbloom starting to realize you were praising him.

> I guess that would be a third reason for not getting angry about his upset: no more delicious beverages.

"So don't assume I'm being malicious, I really am just trying to get a handle on things around here."

> Paperbloom looked into his drink for a moment after you finished.
> Not the response you were expecting, but clearly acceptable given your performance.

"It... Wintergrass isn't a local tradition, it's a night-pact tradition."

> That would explain why he assumed you were going to fire him then.
> Your cousin (and his father, your uncle) were both disdainful of batponies.

"I see, well that would explain why I wasn't keen on what it was. Well, if you need some time of-"

> Again Paperbloom interrupts you with a shake of his head.

"No, I got into politics to do something. I've already been set back once, I'm not going to miss out something as important as this trip". He explains as he gets up.

> Having finished his Tea, he places it back on the table and goes to the front door, opening it.
> He takes an akward look at you before leaving.

"I'll prepare my things for travel, if there is nothing else my lady?"

> Inwardly you raise an eyebrow.
> That was rather fast he put everything behind him.

"No, that is all. Please, enjoy the rest of the day." You say, twiling in his office chair with your tea as he leaves.

> That was... Enlightening.

We definitely need to play up our inner pegasus, since it's the most interesting part of our character.

We always loved going to see the wonderbolts fly as a kid. Even when on the ground, we have to bring along a cloud to sleep on, because regular beds are so uncomfortable. And they always made us play Princess Platinum in the Cloudsdale Heartwarming pagent, even when it was clear that Commander Hurricane was SO much cooler.

History lesson:

A thousand years ago, the aristocrats of Canterlot were FAR more powerful than they are now, and were growing in power. Meawhile Non-Canterlot nobles found themselves being slowly stripped of their power (mostly non-unicorns, but some far flung unicorns also saw their clout being eroded).

So lines were drawn between the Canterlot Aristocracy, and non Canterlot Aristocracy (the burghers also threw themselves in with the non-Canterlot Aristocracy). Eventually however, the tension demanded a response from the princesses, and the nation was thus divided. Those that Celestia backed (or backed Celestia, the difference became irrelevant as the war proceeded) were valiant defenders. Those that sided with the rebellion and Luna became rebels.

For four years, the war was inconclusive. Then in the forth year, a group of Canterlot aristocrats arranged for a meeting with many of the prominent burghers that supported Luna's faction. They made a deal; if the burghers betrayed their allies, when the civil war was over Canterlot would support better privileges for freeponies.

This was a huge turn in the war and the last two yeas put Luna on the defensive. She had become so invested emotionally in the cause by that the betrayal finally broke her, and her own insecurities began to show up; the transformation into Nightmare Moon. She was now hellbent on proving her superiority, and avenging the betrayal. She endowed her most loyal servants with the essence of night, and that bond became known as the night-pact. The most recognizable night-pacts are the bat-ponies, but the magic she weaved affected ponies of all kinds.

When she was ultimately defeated by Celestia, those who had not received the night-pact were quick to turn on those who did in an attempt to salvage what they could. Lies were spread, rumors milled, and the chosen of the moon were demonized, scape goats that not even Celestia could save from the public's wrath.
>>
>>25804433
Damn...

So they're Nightmare cultists?
>>
>>25804433
Oh, we're in an AU. Are there still elements of harmony? How much of the show still happened?
>>
>>25804386
You're right, that IS sad. All the more reason to make it part of our character.

>>25804433
So we are part of one of the aristocratic lines that wanted better treatment of non-unicorns, and then we were born a unicorn. I love it.
>>
>>25804481
That's what others think.

In reality they are just the descendants of people who were loyal til the end to the Princess that didn't betray them. They don't deny that Nightmare Moon was complete trash, but its the whole 'sins of the father' thing, ya know?

Being Night-pact means you literally have a sliver of night in you. Since they were both different due to that, and because they were ostracized after the war, Night-pacts formed some of their own holidays commemorating the night.

>>25804519
Not really. Most of the pegasi who weren't night-pact (and thus not batponies) jumped ship as soon as the war was over. Then over the next millenium noble's power was diluted by freepony's and the privliges they got in the aftermath of the war. Canterlot still is the center of power for nobility now, but the days of absolute dominance are over.

Also, not all of the original night ponies were nobles, some were simply very staunch supporters of their cause (and since Luna equated the cause with herself after the betrayal, she saw them as loyal supporters fo her).
>>
>>25804485
Major stuff involving the EoH happened, but I'm not wanting to bog stuff down with an episode by episode accuracy test.
>>
>>25804811
Maybe just the broad strokes then? The major differences from canon?
>>
>>25804836
Major Differences: The is a place called Torrento in the mountains between Hayseed Swamps (Equestria) and the Badlands. Its secretive and most people up until now probably never heard of it.

There are also lots of heartless politicians, noble and non-noble alike.

The explanation of magic and stuff are probably different.

Oh, and there are Batponies and other unrevealed OC DONUT STEEL pony variants that haven't been revealed yet.

Oh, and what you thought I'd actually tell you spoilers?
>>
>>25804739
Well shit. Sounds like it was the ponies that believed the most in their cause that got the most screwed in the end.

Guess thats what happens when you side with a shitty princess
>>
>>25804863
>what you thought I'd actually tell you spoilers?
No, but I think you should at least tell us what Etherbreeze knows, and she probably knows a lot more about your campaign world than we do, at this point.

I was also hoping for some official art from the CYOA, but it looks like not. It looks like we'll have to make the art for anything we want to see.

Have a phone doodle of the previous scene.

Yup that looks about right!

In other news, what do you all want to do now?

Paperbloom has had his hissy fit but you soothed his raging ego-on and pity trip...

How do you really feel about Night-pacts though? And what's your public opinion of them?

Also with the paperwork finally caught up from your late cousins poor work ethics (honestly, dying shouldn't be an excuse not to run your airstate), you have some free time.

There isn't any venues in this town, but you could still research things, or maybe indulge yourself in whatever floats you.
>>
>>25810052
Our opinions on the night pact are that the sins of the father shouldn't be visited upon the shoulders of his son. We know all about being hated for our species.

I think what we do next depends on a couple of things, like what do we know about this town of ours? Sky or swamp or a bit of both? What is the demographic here?
>>
>>25810128
Also, we need to be thinking ahead to our upcoming political intrigue. I image we have basically jack shit on the mystery kingdom, but what do we know about princess Twilight or the other power players that are going to be at this discussion. If the answer is nothing, we need to do some research so we don't look uninformed.
>>
>>25810128
Yeah, I want a good feel of the current town other than swamp and redneck pones.
>>
And we need to work on our introduction also.

"Presenting the Right Honorable Lady Etherbreeze Clearsky, Baroness of the third, fourth, seventh, and twelfth airstates of the Hayseed Swamp, sovereign under the demesne of her Royal Highness Princess Luna, long may she reign!"

> You do some more research in your office, busting out some more historical references that you had to ignore while dealing with the paperwork..
> Most of the population isn't rural in Hayseed.
> It's super-rural, as in one or two family houses in the middle of nowhere connected by paths (you wouldn't dare call them roads).
> That shouldn't be surprising seeing as most of the economy is nonexistent.
> Trading only really happens during spring, when the rain season starts, bringing in lots of money.
> Following that money are merchants, bringing in goods for both temporary and permanent laborers to buy.
> Even the most rural households lock up to travel to towns and cities to partake in the commercial feeding frenzy.

> The most sought after goods are diversions: the frequent rainstorms and bad weather mean most ponies spend a good deal of their inside their homes when not pursuing their subsistence.
> This oddly has translated into books.
> According to the census (Which is rather sketchy because they are only taken from large settlements), Hayseed Swamp has one of the highest literacy ratings south of Canterlot (the rating is both the ability to read, and the quality of those reading skills).

> The idea of intelligent hillbillies is humorous, but what little you've seen of them so far seems to fit the census.
> Even the most rural requests were concise and well written.
> If they weren't so socially eccentric, many of them could probably find employment that wasn't in the mud.

> The same love of indoor activities was also seen in towns and cities.
> Meeting places were popular, and often mixed stereotypical pubs with other activities like: board games, public theaters, even a pub where people go together to cook their own meals together.
> Supposedly Rainfall city (the capitol of the province) was home to truly extravagant entertainment venues.
>>
> Speaking of Rainfall, the last big historical event happened there.
> Which was the connection of the rail-line to Hayseed via the capitol, which lead to a short period where Hayseed styled pubs became vogue in Equestria.
> Which is surprising given that Luna's return meant the end of a thousand year regency.
> But there was no coup or power struggle, the reins were returned without controversy and people just went along with their lives as normal.

> ... Actually other than those two things there isn't really anything interesting in the book you're consulting "Golden Mud: Hayseed in the Last Century".
> No wonder polite society didn't talk about Hayseed Swamp, it was only slightly more interesting than waiting for a pot of water to boil.
> You'd need to go to your private library in your mansion to find out any earlier history.
>>
>>25810772
Let's go home. Mentally note how convenient it would be to just fly up to our humble abode.
>>
>>25810647
Hell yeah we are.
>>
>>25810772
I think that's a good background on the area. I assume that we'll be travelling on foot to Rainfall city and then taking the rails the rest of the way to our summit, right? Do we know who else will be there?

Also, what time of day is it even? I think you said we leave for the summit tommorrow morning, so how much time do we have to fuck around with?
>>
>>25811041
Actually, no mention was made as to when the summit was. The letter was just asking for confirmation you were coming.

Which either means:

>Twilight or someone acting on her authority fucked up and forgot.

or

> Its top security

> You shut the hundred year summary and deposit it to the bookshelf.
> The sun has been replaced once again by overcast.
> Not wanting to be drowsy after falling asleep far too late in the morning (and then waking up far too early in the afternoon), you decide to go sun-side.

[Success - Composure]

>Your office is on the edge of town easily spotted due to the four cables that descend from the heavens to the locked gondola that rests behind it.
> You feel a familiar stir of jealousy as you unlock the carriage.
> You loved being in the clouds.
> You hated going there because it was an imposing reminder of what you were never going to be.

"Funny that, we always seem to meet here." you hear a familiar voice say as you close the door and sit down.

> That is... Someone you won't even bother mentally recognizing.
> You just grunt within the privacy of your booth, pressing down a lever.
> The engine atop the cloud sputters to life and begins pulling you up.
> Not wanting to respond, you turn to stare in the opposite direction of the voice.
> She was correct, her appearances were impeccably consistent.
> Given how the world worked, you didn't really question it.
> Annoy is as annoying will, after all.

"Oh, you're killing me, KILLING me with your sentiments. Really now, won't you at least speak to me? Just a little? We're of blood after all"

> Nothing, you don't look at her.
> Despite the fact she has a natural talent of getting under your skin, you refuse to acknowledge her.
> You just watch the world grow smaller below you.
> After a few more nagging moments, you hear the pegasi flutter away, leaving you to enter the clouds.

>>
>>25811445
Kid sister?
>>
>>25811445

> Upon leaving the clouds and arriving sun-side, the motor whirs down and then stops.
> You open the door and step out onto the clouds.
> For the smallest of moments, you fall through before a warm tingle flows from your chest to your legs.
> Then your walking on air.

> You can't help but smile at the sensation, nor do you feel you shouldn't
> Its not as if anyone who matters will witness you.
> Your mansion is rather isolated, despite being on a cloud.
> Most pegasi live closer to Rainfall, as the the winds aren't as bad in that part of Hayseed.

> You trot in place for a self-indulgent moment, before locking the gondola.
> There is a path of compacted cloud from he gondola to your mansion proper, but you consciously walk beside that path rather than on it.

> The mansion itself is fairly standard, like a cloud-built replica of a mansion one might find in Canterlot.
> Your cousin had a a notorious lazy streak, and when he inherited it from your grandmother, he had the mansion rebuilt so he could walk everywhere.
> You despised him for not taking advantage of his flight.
> You appreciated the fact he made a mansion that didn't require you to spelunk to the kitchen.

> You almost immediately head straight to your study to write an inquriy to the Princess, when you notice a letter in the mail receptacle (you never understood why people put mail slots in the door. The notion of stomping on your own mail was absurd).
> It was another sealed royal letter.
> You take it, magically setting it in orbit around your head, and then continue to your study to read it.

>>

You work damn fast.
>>
> You sit yourself in the study and open the sealed letter.
> It again starts with the usual jargon filled introduction, and then continues:

"In one week from the date of post, a meeting will be convened in the third hall of Canterlot center. By request, guest suites will not be provided for. You will be responsible for any and all lodging requirements. Any costs incurred can be refunded by personal inquiry to the exchequer."

> Only something clandestine or under the table would be done entirely outside the palace.
> For a princess to do that was unusual.
> For a princess to do that at REQUEST was curious.

"Deliberations are planned to take three days, however the time frame may be shorter or greater than this. Attendees are encouraged to plan accordingly"

> That bit you laugh at.
> It is very clear that this letter was infact written by Twilight.
> While she has been excellent in administration, her writing style lacks what many would call 'refinement'.
> No doubt any Cloudsdale nobles would be just fine with it, but you imagine there are unicorns running in circles right now picking out non-existent slights to their character in the writing.
> That was one reason Twilight was so popular among the less orthodox and younger aristocrats: she didn't take five pages just to say 'you need to find your damn place to stay, but we'll refund you under the table'.

> The letter ended with another 'burn to confirm' message.
> You did so, and began thinking of time-management.

> Trains were clearly the best option for getting to Canterlot, but the only train station in Hayseed was Rainfall and Wet Wood (a town that popped up around the rail in the last ten years).
> Getting to Rainfall by carriage would take one, maybe two days at most.
> The train ride would take another two; the bad weather meant slow travel until you left Hayseed's environment.
> So that left you with a 2 day comfortable window.
>>
>>25811792
Even though Etherbreeze never looked at her, I'll give you their coloration.

> They have the same porcelain white hide we have and similiarly edgy red eyes, but their manes are green and dark green rather than orange and dark orange.
> Their cutie mark is feather, except the Quill and Rachis is agreen lightning bolt.

Last post while I let my car warm up (I live in Washington so it rains a lot.)

Most of the friends you made were also nobles, who were shipped to the far ends of the earth after graduating.

You could track down one or two that you knew that weren't nobles (you did hang out with regular ponies too,) but there might be social repercusions.

Do you want to spend Bits or Social Currency, and in what amounts?
>>
>>25812314
Oh, no we should spend bits, not social currency. We have a lot of bits and not that much social clout. We'll rent a room.
>>
>>25812314
I don't think our lodgings have to be announced to the whole meeting, do they? It might be worth ringing up a friend to check (there are telephones, right?) But I'm sure if we do that someone is going to find out anyway.
How many bits do we have right now?

I'm all for showing that we're a pony of the people, but everyone is already suspicious of why we were invited to this summit in the first place. Let's play it safe and rent a room.

Also, how close is this to what you were describing for our sister/cousin?
>>
>>25812478
We should ask how many bits we have, and how much the barony has also, just to be well informed. What is our net gain from taxes after the barony's expenditures?

As for your autocorrect, we have one butt.

I bet being so heavily tattooed doesn't do anything for social relations and first impressions either. I doubt the enchantment tattoos are very common... are they?

The GM said that normally they're really faint. They're just drawn in bright colors for our benefit. But yeah, they probably didn't make us any friends either.

We're over 500. Should we make a new thread?
