Foal Quest is run by nips who is currently running three other quests. He tried to start a "short" quest called Pumpkin Panic that swallowed up his time for two months. In general, Nips pretty much murders himself to do everything. He's an extremely popular tumblr artist, dedicates time to helping the needy, a student (I believe full-time) and still drags his dying ass over to CYOA to do shit for us, too.

I've always followed Inept's quests, but once I saw nips's art style, I binged through Shooting Stars. A similar thing happened with Aura Quest, but with writing style. I really like how rki writes from an outsider view but at the same time knowing what's going on with the MC.

I had the most fun making Sundance, Aireanna, Longtail, Ember, and the clothes for Sunlight and Crystal.

JAD is nice to read and play, but if course it has it's issues, such as it's wordiness. I've missed so many details from the number of lines inbetween each description that I've shot up multiple Lexile reading levels from trying to find the hidden bits and pieces. Pot's eyes, Sundance's cutie mark, etc...

If you want to establish a characterization for a main character, do so early and be understanding that the players are never going to run them the way you want to perfectly. Give them subtle traits and work them in yourself.

You are not building a world. A world is important, but far more important is the characters in that world. A lot of /tg/-quests (And the recent Crystal Warlock) fuck this up and they are much worse for it.

Beware the curse of First Girl Wins: the first eligible romance partner will be the one your players are most likely to go with.

Memes are a natural occurrence, but you're still liable to get some really shitty votes if you don't know how to tell memes from regular posts.

Railroading is a tool to be lightly used. As much fun as fucking around is, it's just as important to make sure that your quest has a quality plotline to keep things moving forward. Thus, use it to keep things moving, not to negate player choice.

Learn to phrase requests in order to get specific answers. Don't reward people for doing generic, useless comments like "find the thing" or "do the next thing to advance the plot". Specific actions get bonuses and rewards. General actions are your cue to make everything fuck up horribly.

Make sure combat is tight, snappy, and creativity-based. Numbers-based combat is fun in video games because there's no downtime and you can always start over. In CYOAs, it has to be about thinking smart and cool scenes.

And of course, have fun, because that's the only way a CYOA lasts more than two posts.

Diversity is a big one. It can be hard to write characters vastly different from yourself, but most quests that are popular thrive due to the vast assortment of strange and interesting characters. Hijack (inb4 memeing), Urban Survival, Just Another Day, and Shooting Stars are all prime examples of wide, diversified casts.

Also, a good main character makes for good companions. The contrast and interplay is best when you have an interesting and enjoyable central point for interactions.

Thanks, that's rather helpful was hoping to run something I had mentioned a few threads back.
Basically was waifu harem hunting, you go out collect mares, break them in from being wild and go on raids of other clans that are trying to steal your waifus. Was trying to think of base building as well for the non waifuing audience.

For base building, most of the same rules of combat apply. Don't make it too numbers intensive, and for the love of god don't make people make too many decisions or you'll either get one strategy fag who's in complete control of everything or have the quest erupt in constant, unending arguments.
