I've only felt she was super prominent for Twilight in the first season because of her assignment and how much she loved (and feared disappointing) Celestia.
It's a rough dream, especially since they're nearly equals now as of post S3.

The season 5 finale was a very fun, creative and fanservice-y romp through time and space. Like every story that dabbles in time-travel, it's full of tiny little logic holes that make less sense the more you poke at them, but overall, I'd say the jist of the whole thing is solid, to a point that a little girl would be able to understand it.

Problem is, now that we have a canon confirmation that: a) Fate is something that exists in the show's universe, even beyond what we already know involving Cutie Marks and the like, and b) Fate exists AND can be changed with a strong enough time spell (Remember, Twilight tried to change time once, but she was unable to change the time line in any significant way, and she was only able to do it once, which leads us to believe that either her magic or the spell itself weren't powerful enough).
All of this is fine and dandy, and make logical sense in the continuity of the show...however, when we start trying to apply this logic to other elements of dubious canonical importance, things start falling apart. What do I mean?

The Equestria Girls movies take place on an alternate reality which, while being very similar to the main FiM one, has the very glaring difference of being populated by humans instead of cute little ponies. It is very much a ''counterpart'' universe, in the sense that every character (or, at least, the ones we've seen so far) has a human version of itself, with the same voice, ''similar'' appearance, we assume similar age, similar place in that world's hierarchy and, more importantly, same family.
Said alternate reality is connected to the FiM reality via a magic portal, and through appliance of certain spells, that portal can be traversed, the subject transforming into an identical physical copy of his alternate counterpart in the process, because magic and fuck you. (Con't)

Well, let's think about the implications of an alternate reality for a second, and take a look at simple and honest Applejack, member of the proud Apple Clan: She exists in Equestria as a pony, with her big brother Big Mac, grandmother Granny Smith and little sister Applebloom, along with a very, very high number of extended family members. Over in the Canterlot High universe, she also has the same brother, the same grandmother, the same sister, and, we can assume, same very, very high number of extended family member. (Con't)

This fact can mean one of the three following possibilities:

1) The Canterlot High universe is completely devoid of any feasible concept of free will, agency and even love. Why? Because if Applejack has the same family and, ostensibly, the same parents, and we can assume the same is true for everyone else in that universe, that means said relationships have been set in stone forever. Applejack's ancestors HAD to meet and mate with the same partner they did in the FiM universe, for the next generation to be able to exist, and said generation HAD to do the same thing, down to human Applejack. Every couple, every wedding, every act of procreation and birth, was completely out of anyone's hands, and exclusively a thing of fate. Choice, love, affection, none of those things were ever really important when said ancestors chose the love of their lives, only the hard and cold ever-spinning gears of an uncaring fate.
But it gets worse. Because for the offspring to come out exactly (or as close as possible) as the one from the Equestria universe, they had to be conceived in the same moment, in the same place, and during the same circumsances, because even the smallest change would've radically altered almost every aspect of the outcome. We know this is now true because we've seen it in the season 5 finale!

Which, of course, means that if you live in the Canterlot High universe, not only is your partner (or lack of which, we can't have any spares here!) already chosen for you, but your every action, every move, and possibly every thought that would lead you there is also out of your hands as well.
You're just a puppet, strangled by the strings of an uncaring machine called Destiny, whose only motivation is to perfectly mimic an alternate reality that you will probably never be aware of. And the machine is doing an incredibly shitty job at it, because they should all be horses in the first place. (Con't)

2) Since we do not know for sure which universe came ''first'', perhaps both universes are mirrors of a third one we do not know about. Which would mean that everything stated in the previous option could also hold true for the ''main'' universe, Equestria. BUT, unfortunately for our cute little pony friends, this is very unlikely. Why do I say unfortunately?
Because the events transpired during the season 5 finale had our main character, Twilight Sparkle, going through different alternate time lines, produced by a butterfly effect centered on a younger version of Rainbow Dash performing a feat that proved central to the stability of the time line. During every travel through time, we saw the repercussions of the villainous Starlight Glimmer's actions, which generated all sorts of dreadful scenarios...scenarios that seemed to not affect the Canterlot High universe in the slightest! And that's not mere speculation, because the very final scene of Equestria Girls 3: Friendship Games very explicitly states that Sunset Shimmer, a character who seems to lack a human counterpart because fuck you, tried to contact Equestria's Twilight Sparkle so she could come in their aid for some shit that no one cares about, a call that was unable to be answered because Equestria's Twilight Sparkle was too busy chasing Starlight Glimmer through time. So, since no visible time alterations happened during the events of Equestria Girls 3, it's safe to assume that Equestria is actually the real mirror reality to the ''main'' universe that is Canterlot High, and the events that transpire in Equestria have no real impact there, but the other way around.

3) Hasbro doesn't give a shit about any of this and the writers just switch to hack mode whenever they have to slap together an Equestria Girls script.
