I haven't even looked at the comic but I'm disappointed from what I'm hearing. I wanted his spooky smoke powers to just be because he's an evil unicorn.

Of course, I also headcanon that King Sombra actually died a thousand years ago and tried to fake the Crystal Empire with him. What we saw and what they fought was just his evil shadow. Hence the lack of dialogue or clear motivation. It was just an echo of his evil remains going through the motions without any plan or thought. Basically he was a ghost.
