Do you sometimes post suggestions as Anon in your on CYOA?
>>

That's just plain wrong.

>>
>>25460139
I sometimes post 'didn't X happen once?' questions when players have forgotten something critical to their plan.
>>
>>25460195
I don't know when anyone else discovered it, but chef anon stuff is at the front end of his tumblr.

Some people (like me) just don't connect certain things like that. Though I never check artist tumblrs unless I have to.

I just figured the grill was a standard reference. Glad to know he's been around providing stuff for us all along.
>>
>>25460126

I do not have any communications with No. 35 outside of /mlp/. I wish I did, but I do not.

This is not my first rodeo; technically it's my second. Though it's like the third or fourth idea I mucked about with before deciding to go with it.

First one bombed pretty quickly. Did an autopsy, looked over my mistakes, and started over with a fresh new idea. Point is, you gotta just do it

>>25460163

Brevity is one of my major issues as well, given that my usual writings tend to be much more verbose. But I've had a long time to improve my writing, too...didn't get here over. Took 14 years of 'overnight'
>>
>>25460216
you are not /that/ guy because that guy would never and by that I mean in at least most cases try to boil it down to just one word like when you could give a much more in depth example of what you were trying to say or the gist of it if you know what I mean just to make it clearer for the reader or the other players or the QM although they all might be readers.

I didn't want to bring this here, in a whole new and fresh thread. Oh well.

Remind yourself at all times that you're at least decent and that you've proven yourself capable of doing stuff; remember that you're not the only one who can do that, and that others can do it better; never give up on your dream to become better than them, not only because you can, but also because they were like you

Fishing for compliments is, when you /know/ you're good or at least pretty decent at this or that but say "oh now, I'm so bad at this, I'm the worst", only to have people suck your cock and tell you "hey no, it's great, and you're a great artist. It's really great!"

They do the opposite for me. I feel good for a while after receiving them, but then when I start working on something new I feel even worse about it than I did before because I don't think it looks as good as people are expecting it to, and then I just don't feel like working on it at all.

Finally decided to catch up on Vampony, and I gotta say I'm not crazy about the direction it took.
At the start, it looked like it was going for a more modern setting with the presence of guns and television, and being set in a Vegas analogue. But now it turns out to be only 12 years in the future from show.
And instead of Vegas, we're now in Ponyville.
And the M6 are showing up.
And now Princess Twilight knows who and what we are, and she basically has our ass on a leash because our only other options would mean going against the third most powerful pony in Equestria, so we're pretty much stuck with them.

Anyone else having a problem with thIs, or is my canon character aversion just irrational?

Does it amount to 'The quest derailed when bathwater took over and immediately had us murder someone'
>>
>>25469071
Maybe the opposite actually. Having such a gritty tone and introducing widespread modern firearms with modern levels of regulation seems incredibly jarring when it's put next to the canon stuff. I feel like if you want to go that direction you should try to keep away from the established characters and setting if you can.

Also Twilight is a bit of a story breaker. There's no way we can really resist or go against her. Any other random character finds our secret, we have the options to run, hide, or try to kill them. But we can't do that with Twilight. We're forced to play along pretty much. She's involved with the story in a way that doesn't seem easy to get out of.
>>
>>25469304

Hypothetical:

Players fail to do something and they accuse you of railroading.

How do you properly respond to such an accusation?
What about if they have a really good plan that still fails because of a party member failing a roll?

How can the players fail in a way that doesn't make them cry 'railroading!'
>>
>>25469757
Either you don't or you address it after.
No need to do it mid-thread.
>>
>>25469757
1. Work on your conveyance or consider the number of options you left available to your players. If your problem only had one solution then it's 100% on you to properly convey what needs to be done and what options they have within the breadth of those necessary actions.

2. fix your rolling system. Sufficiently good plans should barely have a roll component at all, you're basically just rolling to see if there's a 5% chance people hate you.

TL;DR: If you get accussed of railroading and you're not, you're probably doing something else wrong instead.

Have them not know how to fight a boss, then figure it out, then instantly forget again until you take them by the hand and point them at the correct solution in big bright red flashing neon lights. That way they'll have become too confused and bored to care.
>>
>>25469789
Well, duh.
>>
>>25469757
1. If a player accuses you of railroading, you say fuck all. Soldier on despite accusations, and then respond to the criticism after you're done with the session.

2.Personally, If I think a plan is totally sweet, and the die roll fails, I'll usually fudge it, or make the plan as a whole succeed but add a little hint of failure, which may or may not come back to bite the players later.
I roll, but it's usually a formality.

3. If the players are failing, they should at least know it's their fault. That their actions have definitely led up to this failure.

The players decided all of this, I want to point out. The QMs just pointed toward Ponyville, but the players decided to tell Zecora about Mango's Vampirism which is why they got caught by Twilight.

I feel like I might have screwed up my convenience there. There was no need to get Zecora to show you where the Castle was. It was the easiest way, but came with consequences for taking the easy way.Zecora herself made this harder because I was so concerned with keeping the rhyming scheme going that I had a hard time giving her the right tone.
But I can't let you tell a Princess's friend about your Vampirism without a consequence.

Specifically for Medacity and Space Vex it requires some jacking off to keep going it seems.

Would you be terribly broken up if another QM offered them a chance to earn a bit more freedom and open up a different route? I ask because I wouldn't want to seem like some Johnny come lately forcing the story in a new direction because he thinks you're shit, I just feel like they don't have a lot of power over the narrative at the moment. If working for/with Twilight is a thing they want, they'll still be able to, I'd just like to make sure the players have a way to influence where the story goes.
>>
>>25471378

Better than when I started this stuff, which I guess is all I can ask for.
>>
>>25471432
Vampanon shouldn't have a coherent narrative imo anyway. Every QM's plans should be ruined by every other QM, giving them the freedom to do whatever they want. More fun that way.

He was fucking based. It's just too bad he left for difficult to understand reasons about not liking that we held a vote about whether to homosex or not, and not enjoying the romance elements. I think he was Indian or something. He didn't talk much.

We got some bangin persona pics from him, but strangely he never drew any of the characters beyond one anon pic. Nor did anyone else. Not that we had more than a handful of OCs anyway.
>>
>>25471432
Of course. I took a lot of liberties myself with what Bathwater and a few others did right after Quack stopped.

In fact I was planning on giving them an 'out' myself once they got to that meeting I mentioned. I don't want to say more here because of spoilers for players.

This sort of thing makes me wish there was somewhere to discuss QMing without the players. Of course such a place would soon devolve into a circlejerk of namefaggery or woe-is-me-faggery. I'd also probably find out that some QM's I enjoy are jerks or hate their players. Ignorance is bliss in this case.

>>25471483
This is basically why I'm taking a break. I felt like I was dominating the quest. No other QM should feel beholden to what I was planning.

We can do like AiE and start a big content creator circlejerk skype group, that will ironically inadvertently kill everyone's drive since it's easier to fuck around in the group than it is actually contribute content.

I'm actually sorta half serious, I love bouncing ideas around without having to worry about spoiling everything for the participants, and we don't really have a place to do that yet.

>>
>>25471548
The problem with creating other hang out spots is that other hang out spots are more convenient. Which inevitably means people end up hanging out there instead of here or in the quest threads. It's happened to every thread that's done it. If you want to talk QMing add a few QMs' Skypes. But don't make a thing.
>>
>>25471548
But what if some QMs are players for another QM?
>>
>>25471585
>If you want to talk QMing add a few QMs' Skypes.

Yeah, that's probably preferable. I never bothered with AiE's skypegroup either.

Now the only problem is figuring out how to get us awkward spergs to actually trade skype info. I have a theory that everyone is always too shy to ask one another due to a phenomenon known as "Recursive Senpaiing", where all involved parties think all others are their senpai and are waiting for them to notice them, which they never do because they are waiting for them to notice them first.

>>25471598

An unfortunate problem that I don't think has a solution. Though it's preferable to never show one's hand, exceptions can be made at the discretion of the QM, but only if both parties are alright with the other being deprived of whatever aspect would be lost when showing said hand.

I think even if I was in contact with every other QM here I'd still probably never tell them anything, actually.

Couple reasons.

1. player migration. Nips killed all his popular quests in favour of bore and snore that he never runs, in the absence of a clear frontrunner players have migrated and split across many quests.
2. QM demographics seem to have shifted into PST timezones and NEET hours. people like bathwater dont start their quest until 2am EST and that makes it extremely difficult for collage or employed people to follow.
3. Summer. /cyoag/ demographics placed a clear majourity of people in the 18-22 age range, they can afford summers off at NEET hours, but they can't now.
4. The two more popular quests: Colt and Vampony, typically don't migrate over here.

It also takes a looong time for a new cyoa to establish itself enough to regularly be discussed here unless its a clear diamond in the rough situation like DFU.

Hero ran for months before he got cyoa famous for being gud.
Heat arguably didn't become famous until it was ending.
Bathwater went two months and started a whole new quest to become cyoa famous. I remember shilling for 11-54 when it had 8 IPs tops.

What CYOAG needs is another Urban, Galloping, JAD. Something that can advertise decisively and pick up an initial solid and dedicated playerbase, then deliver on its promises.

We need Nips to come back for real and just kill pumpkin, hiatus shooting stars while either going whole hog on NE or hiatusing it too. Then smash out Lost and Foal quest. They're simple to understand, easily decisive and anyone can catch up in a day.

Then, If Inept was serious about trying something that moves away from her death Goddess reputation, she can do a lot by really delivering on that front. Something as lighthearted as recent Threshhold threads could sell well without the negative reputation of being repeatedly murdered by bees. She kind of needs to re-examine her QMing style though.

Bathwater is also doing something new, if it gets him excited and he commits more [earlier] time to it, we know he can deliver a winner.

New blood is the best solution though. I have high hopes for Radioactive Horse quest and Hayrides QM could be great if he sands down the edges from his first attempt.

-
this is mostly for the QM's/drawfriends:
You gotta read and support other new QM's.
If hayride has the promise of quality, Nips and Hijacker need to be there giving them art and making that QM loyal. [Inept already did good for super, so more of that but focused no new talent]

Fuck, don't even read them, just find a character description.
Look at Into the white, its QM flaked but its still getting shit because early attention came from Nips, Inept and bathwater.

cyoag is definitely not required for success, but to say that you wont pull players from here is blatantly false. There's more players here than any cyoa, getting their attention is a good thing. Look at Res who only had 2 players before he got attention here.

B-b-but Coltquest, Anonpone, Persona, This Fucker. Would you like me to flip it around and list off the small ones that got talked about here more than the big ones? Coltquest is the current largest and Anonpone was the largest until mid-summer. Or are you going to say that they somehow don't count?

No, being talked about here is indicative of an association with this thread. Unique still doesn't have a massive amount of players even though it was talked about constantly I've heard more about Space Vex now recently than in months, that doesn't mean it was suddenly bigger than it's four or five players. Your own example Urban had only two players and got talked about here.

Being talked about here is certainly indicative of a possible growth in player base, but it isn't indicative of a large player base.

Being talked about here is certainly a positive thing. But it isn't anything anyone should be trying to use as a judge of quests or QMs on it's own.

Wrong, Urban has always had plenty of players. Resurrected (the quest) had two players.
>>

>that made up graph would have a trend. Now prove that the outliers are outliers instead of excluding data at your whim.
My first guess is that you don't actually know what those words mean and just remembered them from high school. Outliers are outliers by definition of skewing far from the general dataset, you could argue if outliers should or should not be included as part of a data set or not, but they're always going to be outliers, be it indicative of an error in measurement or an external unaccounted factor. Excluding data at a whim would be pretending that the existence of outliers nulls meaningful data.

If we measured average levels of solar radiation over a year and a minor solar flare hit the earth on the third, you'd have to be a complete retard to then say that the data is meaningless on the grounds of a completely legitimate outlier.

Wind direction and speed is relevant to distance a golf ball travels, but that doesn't mean we can't examine a relationship between distance and fitness level.

Now he will say "I heard people mention space three times this month in the context of 'give more attention to'" because he's fresher than morning dew or certifiably brain damaged and then he will pretend that the cyoa that is in the name of the website that arguably caused this threads existence was never relevant in this thread.

>>25472825
I assumed he had the general experience to be familiar with this stuff, my bad. He's actually attacking that graph on the grounds its 'made up' because he's legitimately too autistic to recognize a conceptual aid for a line of best fit.

Which one of those wasn't regularly discussed at the time?
Clop quest was probably the least discussed and it made it into anonpones birthday pic.

Someone else is using this to indicate quotes within quotes? Well, at least ONE thing I do is not a mistake.
>>
>>25472916
Why would that be a mistake? It's literally the sole purpose of single quotation marks.

All of the small quests don't have MCs worth waifuing or a documented meme license.

If you're that faggot, then I assume you're backing away from using This fucker, Persona and your hilarious opinion on anonpone given that they are all over? GeeGee.

If you're not that faggot, then I'm not sure why you'd assume past quests were excluded on the basis of grammatical dickery. everyone who was there knows QC cyoas were constantly talked about here.

>>25472969
Brackets are regularly used when quotes get heavily nested, but the single quote was invented for the sole purpose of quotes within quotes. Brackets aren't wrong, but single quotes are definitely right.

Missing quite a few. Some are in other categories.

Welp, overall these all seem arbitrary placements. But, you're fresh as the morning dew or certifiably brain damaged, so I guess you'd think so. I actually think it's legitimate autism from the unearned arrogance, inability to put sentences into greater context, and sterile description of social interaction. But hey, we're just flinging around insults, they don't mean anything.

>I smart I insult u.
Alrighty buddy. Tbh, I lost interest in this conversation as soon as you decided to assume I'm mentally challenged when you repeatedly had trouble putting my sentences together with the overall topic. Thanks for proving my points. You keep on keepin' on.

See, if he had quantified both playerbase and discussion then we would be fine. I see his provided graphs as his estimation of what the trend would be. I know that there was a way to calculate the approximate of a player base, so grabbing that and then checking how many times the cyoa or its characters are mentioned and then graphing that should give accurate data
>>
>>25473032
Does Amm have a statistic for average amount of players a thread has?
>>
>>25473046
No, no archive has ever tracked that.
Plus it would be skewed easily by small cyoas that get consistently bumped over several weeks and gain high IP counts that way.

Ideally we'd have to track the IP count of the first 24 hours over a few threads per cyoas, average that and compare.

Then we could go over cyoa discussion threads and filter for relevant keywords.

It certainly could be done, but not by amm.

Amm could tell us which cyoas get the most views through his site though, but since his site is not a complete archive it wouldn't be perfect and I would argue that some quests are just less valuable on the archive then their live popularity. Foal quest being a probable example.
>>
>>25473075
Not to mention all this just fuels competition, which Amm doesn't want.
>>
>>25473032
If he were saying that I wouldn't have argued. The biggest problem is his trying to say his viewpoint is the reality of the situation.

As far as actually graphing it I don't think that possible as the two values the other guy keeps mixing up are linked. I don't believe Playerbase size -> Discussion isn't indicative, while Discussion -> increased Playerbase is. I wouldn't know how to isolate the variables.
>>
>>25473080
That was weird. Competition for amount of fanart would be a good thing, wouldnt it? It means more art.

I suppose it could be mspaint spammed, but whats the point?
>>
>>25473083
I fucked that up. Tired. I don't believe playerbase size has an inherent positive correlation to discussion, while discussion does have an inherent positive correlation to discussion.
>>
>>25473093
>n to discussion.
playerbase size* dammit.
>>
>>25473093
>discussion does have an inherent positive correlation to discussion.
...
>>
>>25473091
That would only benefit popular cyoas where people are drawn, and their players, making the small ones even more isolated. I imagine some people will think "that's how it goes", but I believe that only because a cyoa is small, it doesn't mean it's of less quality, some are simply underrepresented.
>>
>>25473093
>I don't believe playerbase size has an inherent positive correlation to discussion
Why?
Discussion is fuelled by players.
The more players you have, the more likely you have someone who will mention your quest when its relevant.
>>
reminder that you don't need a good story if you have pretty pictures
>>
>>25473106
World is not a fair and just place. Best way is to get used to it, Anon. Or at least try.
>>
>>25473137
I think it's association. If you have one of the conversation starter players you'll get mentioned a lot more here. The critiquers, memers, art requesters, and complainers. As you mention things (nightbitch, big mare, tanks, whatever) in reference to a quest in this thread, people will associate that and the quest with this thread. And so people are more likely to bring it up again, further associating it.

It could be said to be indirectly related to size in that the larger your playerbase the more likely you are to get a conversation starter player, but that's a stretch considering the amount of players per quest we're talking about. It's effectively a modified random variable. Were you lucky enough to get a conversation starter anon? Or are you one of the QMs that is your own association builder by participating in the thread? Which, of course, comes with its own pitfalls.

Whether this causes the trend the other guy was going on about is really a question of how you view his categorizations. And, as I said, I disagree with several.

>She kind of needs to re-examine her QMing style though.

I'm aware of this. And since I'm jacked up on coffee, I might as well try and explain myself a bit now: The truth is that I don't tout the 'death goddess' reputation because I'm some sick edgelord who enjoys hurting cute pastel horses. It's because, like most QM's here, I'm scared.

I've told you guys before how PQ is modeled more after a video game than a CYOA. That's because that idea was fresh and (mostly) amusing enough to work for PQ1 through PQ3. I wasn't making a serious interactive story. I was bored and basically drawfagging /mlp/'s requests in a semi-coherent narrative. But then, when I tried to change that formula to something more serious (but with the same rigid and punishing framework), people got bored and frustrated, and they stopped playing.

Since I've come back, I've discovered that the new approach is something players prefer more now. Funny stupid games still have a place; Bad Mares is proof of that. But now serious effort is needed to draw players. Artists like Nips, GC, and Bathwater and writers like anyone-besides-me have raised the bar a lot, and even though I've tried to adapt, I'm still adhering to the formula I know that (sort of) works. However, I can see the same old issues popping up again, especially in Mufin Top. Players these days don't want one-shot kills and text parser input, they want to manage complex (but not melodramatic) character relations and have the freedom to make strategic battle plans without having to be afraid of one 'wrong' choice leading to death.

And I'd like to give that stuff to them. I shit you not; I actually have TWELVE possible new CYOA ideas right now that I'm trying to flesh out, and only 3 or 4 of them follow the traditional PQ formula. I'll need to pick at least one of them soon to replace Muffin Top, but leaving my comfort zone is hard for me. For your sake and mine, I'll try. But if I can't promise anything, it makes me feel like I'm promising nothing.

Sorry to blog. I'm not trying to be all "Woe is me." or any hugboxy shit like that. I just want you guys to know that your suggestions and requests aren't falling on deaf ears - just very slow and hesitant ones. And it's not because I'm stubborn or "Fuck you it's working." It's because I'm just as nervous and in need to >JUST as anyone else. Probably moreso, actually.

You seem like one of the more stable QMs really.

Threshold proves that you can deliver on the "new" style of questioning that has become popular, even if that had some growing pains.
