Finally decided to catch up on Vampony, and I gotta say I'm not crazy about the direction it took.
At the start, it looked like it was going for a more modern setting with the presence of guns and television, and being set in a Vegas analogue. But now it turns out to be only 12 years in the future from show.
And instead of Vegas, we're now in Ponyville.
And the M6 are showing up.
And now Princess Twilight knows who and what we are, and she basically has our ass on a leash because our only other options would mean going against the third most powerful pony in Equestria, so we're pretty much stuck with them.

Anyone else having a problem with thIs, or is my canon character aversion just irrational?

Maybe the opposite actually. Having such a gritty tone and introducing widespread modern firearms with modern levels of regulation seems incredibly jarring when it's put next to the canon stuff. I feel like if you want to go that direction you should try to keep away from the established characters and setting if you can.

Also Twilight is a bit of a story breaker. There's no way we can really resist or go against her. Any other random character finds our secret, we have the options to run, hide, or try to kill them. But we can't do that with Twilight. We're forced to play along pretty much. She's involved with the story in a way that doesn't seem easy to get out of.

How do you properly respond to such an accusation?
What about if they have a really good plan that still fails because of a party member failing a roll?

How can the players fail in a way that doesn't make them cry 'railroading!'

1. Work on your conveyance or consider the number of options you left available to your players. If your problem only had one solution then it's 100% on you to properly convey what needs to be done and what options they have within the breadth of those necessary actions.

2. fix your rolling system. Sufficiently good plans should barely have a roll component at all, you're basically just rolling to see if there's a 5% chance people hate you.

TL;DR: If you get accussed of railroading and you're not, you're probably doing something else wrong instead.

1. If a player accuses you of railroading, you say fuck all. Soldier on despite accusations, and then respond to the criticism after you're done with the session.

2.Personally, If I think a plan is totally sweet, and the die roll fails, I'll usually fudge it, or make the plan as a whole succeed but add a little hint of failure, which may or may not come back to bite the players later.

3. If the players are failing, they should at least know it's their fault. That their actions have definitely led up to this failure.
