The way I see it, magic in MLP works like The Force.

It isn't so much conjured as there is a persistent layer of invisible magical energy that exists around all beings. Unicorns having horns make them the only creatures who can regularly sense and use this energy. They don't fully comprehend it, they just kind of know it's there and "casting a spell" is simply manipulating that energy into something that can make things happen in "the real world".

The way I see it, ponies all inherently have a certain amount of magical energy within them, regardless of species. This is what grants them their generally high resilience to injury, and quick regenerative abilities, among other things. But they manipulate it in different ways.

Unicorns are the most sensitive to this energy, able to focus and control the energy within their bodies to manipulate the world around them utilizing the specialized horns on their head.

With ponies and pegasi it's more passive.

Pegasi's magical energy are focused through their wings, and some organ in their stomach that gifts them the ability of negating gravity, which explains their small wing proportions; they only need their wings to direct and control their aerial movement and orientation. It also gives them powers over the weather, air, water and electricity specifically to create and manipulate the weather.

Earth ponies traditionally have a similar magical energy as the plant life of equestria and thus are able to grow crops spectacularly, but I'm of the theory that earth ponies have enough magical energy to at least subconsiously bend their surrounding environment to their will much like a Unicorn, but it's indirect and unfocused. This allows them to sometimes to unexplainable things. This is why high energy earth ponies, such as Pinkie Pie or Cheese Sandwich, can seemingly bend reality to their wills as they need. But when you strap them down and tell them to open a door to the fourth wall, they'll have no ability to do it, and more or less have no idea what you're talking about. But then when you throw your notes in frustration and let them be, they'll somehow be able to procure an apology cake with balloons from behind their back because they feel sorry.

Therefore, under certain circumstances, an earth pony could potentially be more destructive than a Unicorn in magical potential should they contain enough ~~determination~~ to do so.

How do you think the mane 5 met and became friends before Twilight?

For example; these two glorious ponies: it's implied that Pinkie and Rarity have had a long historied friendship, but how did they meet? What circumstances thrust these two very disimilar-yet-similar ponies to break that thick ice and find common ground? I would have thought Rarity would avoid Pinkie because she's so brash and in your face and not as "cultured" and "high society" as Rarity. I mean hell, Rarity only became really interested in Twilight when she revealed she's from Canterlot.

What about AJ and Rainbow Dash? Fluttershy and Rarity? Dash and Fluttershy knew each other from Cloudsdale's School, but they're so diametrically different. What made them become friends?

Kinda, yeah. Sunset is one of the only dynamic characters in the whole franchise. Her whole design is great and is overall a great character. Once the TV show premieres, mane 5 waifufags will like it more when their waifus have their own episodes.
