***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Will do for future shots. It happens to be high noon now actually, will have to avoid from now on.

Also,

There is a lot of detail that goes onto the back ends of RG that people rarely seem to appreciate. MKII titan has a lot going on back there.

But like

You guys gave a lot of choices this time, so much so that I've gotta make a poll to narrow the choices down.

https://pastebin.com/k5Whz9iW (The link triggers the spam filter, and i needed a polling site that limits how many choices you can make on a question)

Pick your 5 favorite Groupbuild ideas. After this thread I'll post the results and we'll go vote from the top 5 to decide which one you guys want the most. Some changes I made to suggestions (mostly to consolidate some together and to make them have more options available)

>Elemental groupbuild
This one was originally Fire/Earth/Water/Air. You probably could get a lot out of those 4, but I figured making it any element opens up more ideas (Like electricity/ice/metal/etc)

>/m/ + /v/ kitbash of your favorite video game
>Palette Swap build
>pokemon groupbuild
>Tokusatsu Groupbuild
These sounded similar to the Knockoff Groupbuild idea from a few polls back, where the idea was you make something not from Gundam out of Gundam parts.

>INITIAL D GROUPBUILD
>Mobile Suit Racing
Although it's kinda similar to the Civilian build, I think there's enough difference between what people would make in a civilian focused build and a full-on racing one.

>World War 2 themed Groupbuild
>Historical uniforms Groupbuild
I'm gonna take these two suggestions and just make it a general War-themed groupbuild. Kitbash a MS with a Scale-model (Tanks/planes/ships/etc) from a historic war.

So I'm going back to my first real re-paint and I realized I've made a few mistakes I think. For one, I'm not sure i ever primed it. Second the enamel top-coat is trash and not really that smooth. So I'm wondering, should I try sanding down the top coat, and recoating it with lacquer, or completely repaint it over what I did, cuz I dont think I can strip off the enamel

T-thanks...

I had a few problems with the build. Not as many as my Rebake last groupbuild, though.

The light from my desk lamp makes the paint look a significantly different color than the white LEDs I used in the submission photos. It also looked good as is without panel lining, but looking at it yesterday in the thread, it really needed it.

Also the knee snapped off while I was assembling it and wiggling the joints to break them in, so I lost all motivation at that point.

Here's my imgur album of the build. I usually post this after voting.

Trying to figure out a winter camo style paintjob for my 1/100 Tieren and I'm mostly coming up empty.
I did think of spraying the whole thing in german grey, topcoating that, spraying the large bits in white, then sanding the edges to simulate wear.

I dunno, tell me what you think and if you have any ideas I could potentially use. Any opinion would be of great help.
>>
>>15834628
I like the original idea for the historical build: design a MS based on the uniform of a army, past or present. You could do roman centurion, medieval knight, WW2, Cold War, whatever.
>>
>>15836125

I'd use a brighter/paler grey than german grey.

Does anyone know if a simple matte top coat would prevent the tamiya panel liners from damaging the plastic?
I'm really new to gunpla, but I'm trying to figure out all this stuff with the panel lining.
>>
>>15836821
If you're using a wash, use gloss, not matte.

The Matte will suck up the was like a sponge and leave a mess.
>>
>>15836821
Do you know how the panel line accents work? Do you know what "capillary action" is? Do NOT use matte. DO. NOT.

Use gloss. That's what you're supposed to do.
>>
>>15836824
>>15836825
So if you want to use the tamiya panel liners you have to use a gloss topcoat on the entire thing?

>Do you know how the panel line accents work?
Only what I've been able to find online, which isn't much.
>>
>>15836834
You don't HAVE to, but it's at your own risk. Reports of any actual damage it does to plastic are mixed.

I'm assuming your concern is you want to have a matte coat in the end? Just use the gloss coat to protect the plastic, accent line, then topcoat again with matte.

>Only what I've been able to find online, which isn't much.
Unscrew cap, wipe excess off brush on edge of bottle, gently touch tip of the brush to a groove, capillary action will take over. It's not rocket science.

The tamiya panel liner really doesn't do enough to fully damage plastics on the outer armor since you will rarely be putting any kind of stress on them. Where you don't want it is getting into the joints or inner frame.

You will want to learn seam welding, it takes away from the overall look to have seams across the model. Look at the arm/wrist area in this picture, for example.
>>
>after one week my airbrush is finally shipping
>>
I bought this older kit and some paints & thinner to try my first painted build. Didn't want to mess up something nicer and this should be a straightforward job. Just gonna go with the stock color scheme and a matte coat on top.
>>
>>15837250
Yeah, definitely. I've been trying to improve in steps. For my Zaku, I was following a video and just did the steps he did. For my current project, I'm upgrading another former snap-fit. In addition to the things I used on the Zaku, I took off the stickers to paint them instead, and I also used Tamiya thin cement to seam weld.

Parts of it are unfixable, I just pulled the pieces out of the sprues, but I'm doing what I can. Painting is hard, but it looks pretty good.
>>
>>15837311
Good luck!
>>
I'm excited, I can't wait to get Orga's Shiden so I can display it on his chara base.

>>
>>15837311
Anon. Read the guide. Be sure to weld the seams. I have that kit and am currently working on it. If you don't they're very obvious looking. Be sure to prime, lots of newbies don't do it and then wonder why their paint looks bad.

How can I clean up the edges? I've been using a toothpick and scraping with an exacto knife, but I feel like there has to be a better way. The paint also gets a little under the tape. Is that normal, or does it mean I'm masking poorly?

Any good display cases for gunpla that you guys would recommend? I'm running out of space for my kits. Something not fragile would be good, as I'm moving in 3 months and would want to take the case with me.
>>
>>15837496
Ikea Detolfs are usually reccomended for around 70$, but try your local flea or antique market for cheaper glass housing, you can find some nice ones for 20 or so if you look hard enough.
>>
>>15837466
That would explain it. You're using the wrong type of tape. You really want Tamiya masking tor this sort of thing, grab it at a local hobby store or on Amazon for cheap. It's got the right amount of tackiness to it to it pull off paint but won't let paint through. I can't explain the specifics perfectly, but there's a reason you always re everyone putting yellow tape on their models here. It's very high quality.
>>
>>15837553
Amazon it is, then. Nowhere in Vermont sells Tamiya, I only have my thin cement because I was driving through New Hampshire.
>>
>>15837560
Good luck with your future attempts. You would want to strip the botched paint I assume? If you're using acrylics go ahead and leave them in some isopropyl alcohol or windex and then scrub at them with an old toothbrush. Then redo that part until it's right.

when weathering you must always think "how did this happen.
>>15837855 for example the weathering implies that a grenade or shelling might have hit it. If so then where's the actually damage or shelling hole. based off that pose one might also think it just ripped some poor graze to shreds with it's tail and hand. then the "oil" should be focused on the hand and tail and spreading from the contact point with one part or even section being dry from the oil.

with what the artist did it's hard to tell what when or why and felt like he wanted it to look cool which leaves it looking like an incoherent mess. but that's just my autistic two cents

It's weird because the chipping along edges is halfway decent, but then you went and ruined it by just randomly smudging black everywhere. Also the panel lines are TOO thick and dark. Try using grey lines on white parts, and maybe brown on the yellow.

>>
>>15838149
Alright, thanks. Guess I'll try and get a coat as even as possible or something. I'm using Tamiya's panel line accent color and Mr Hobby's flat matt top coat. I'll just test it on some HGs or something to get a feel for it before I go balls deep on a kit that's in the mail.
>>
>>15838286
I didn't figure.
>>15838282
Well, for one it's summer in Texas, with a broken AC, a non-opening window in my room, and relatively poor insulation.
Also, we might be getting rid of a pest problem soon via exterminator, namely by a "heat treatment" designed to raise the temperature in a room past a point where certain bugs can survive. Namely, about 140 Fahrenheit, apparently.

I need to know what I gotta do to ensure the safety of my gunpla.

Yeah, I figured. We just don't have anywhere to really put them, unfortunately, so it's going to amount to boxing/bagging them as carefully as I can and setting them in the yard or something for a while, I just wanted to make sure that it was a risk after all

I didn't figure they could even stand much higher than 100 period anyhow

Depends on what kind of paint you used and what you're using to line. If they're both the same, like acrylic, then it's best to use a lacquer gloss coat after painting. Well I've seen to always gloss coat after painting desu, but if you're panel liner is enamel or lacquer, you could use an acrylic gloss coat like Pledge Future. If you used a glossy enamel or lacquer paint from the get go, I don't see why you'd need to gloss coat, again unless your panel liner is of the same type

Enamel (and I believe lacquer) thinners can damage bare plastic. The thinner the part or more panel liner you use, the more likely it is to break the part
>>
>>15838785
Depends on how strong the solvents are used to thin down the panel line stuff
If you mix your own using lighter fluid or mineral spirits then it`s fine, although the gloss coat also makes it flow better and easier to clean up

On the skewers/alligator clips.

If I am waiting for them to cure and I want to free up space for more pieces on the skewers/alligator clips, I use empty gunpla boxes.

I put a bunch of pieces in it until I can't fit any without having to stack them or risking them touching each other, and then I put a sheet of printer paper on top. Repeat the process until you hit the height of the box.

joints are super crappy on certain kits, snap, the crotch joint is terribly designed. Deets are a hassle (feet wires)

Theres a reason why so many kits have sculpted joints. The kit's styling is so forgiving (skirts cover problem areas), and can be weathered to cover up mistakes. So they're kind of brilliant.

only glue pieces that fall off (vfin, skirts, ect.) or if you're welding noticeable seems together (like the ones on qunta's shens). Just in case you get deep into the hobby and want to paint, kit bash, or make dioramas that involve damage. also invest in a display area so you can pose your kits more freely.

also get yourself a dreamcast bot of many stickets
>>
>>15841198
In a lot of cases it's not really necessary unless you're dealing with a hand grenade of a kit or getting rid of seam lines. outside of those occasions I see no reason to glue or cement pieces.

I'm taking a break. This guy took me over a year to finalize everything. I ruined everything on the original model and had to buy a second one, no joke. Kept the legs and shoulders as is and everything else is brand new.
Was a huge learning experience. Seam welding, plaplate use, putty. He doesn't look as good as I wanted him to be, but I'll have to try harder next time.
>>
>>15841595
Leviathan builder here. I'm in the same boat, friend. I plan on working on seam welding when I get less busy and get painting down enough to satisfy me.

I had some problems, too. Namely my work station lamp is very yellow and the pictures I submitted were under white light. Also it looked great without panel lining before I took it down to the shop and set it up for poses. I didn't notice at the time, but it looked really flat without panel lining under softer and more ambient light. Learning experiences.

Do you have any other pictures?

Even better.
>>
>>15841609
Mine were submitted under white light because when I entered this it was at around 10pm. I was cutting it very close. It's been through three different paint schemes, that's the other thing I learned about, stripping paint. unfortunately that's what fucked it, the original pieces anyways.
Also I never went out and took some. Moving this guy is quite a pain since I didn't glue the back fuel tanks in, so they fall out constantly. Same with the thrusters on the side of the backpack.
The idea was to have a much more mobile GM Cannon II, so I added thrusters and then lengthened the fuel tank to account for the new mobility. A high speed artillery mobile suit would be super powerful. I didn't want the mace to be his main melee weapon, but I didn't have time to try and remake beam saber holders for him. Granted there's the one in his arm but I forgot to put the piece in during assembly. All well.

I'm a big fag of Josh Darrah. His style and methodology with sharp lines and clever use of runner and spare parts suits me.

What I like about groupbuilds and such is that you get to see work with a lot of effort put into it by someone who isn't in that "two standard deviations above the rest" professional category of modeler.

It's inspiring to me to see stuff where I have almost a clue what's going on, and can have a small hope of imitating.

I agree with you on this. Some stuff that is P-bandai that I bought seem like they could've very well been regular releases. I didn't mind paying the price for them, but after owning them, they seem to have enough going for them that they would sell very well off shelves better than on some online website. I'm sure to a nip it doesn't matter though and they probably don't mind ordering from the website.

Raptor rodi builder here. That guy was intended to be in melee group build, but I couldn't finish him on time. Luckily the next group build is thick theme, so I tried to finish him and submit.
I still can't mix paint with thinner probably and end up damage part and wasting a lot of paint. Also, dealing with airbrush problem make me almost cry sometime.
But I still love customizing gunpla. I'm not sure about participating in the next group build since I want to spend time on other ideas.
