HG is a real-estate firm. They were never an anime company, Maceck just talked them into investing in "the next big thing" back in the 80's. That's why they don't give a shit about funding any new shows or movies. They won't even sign off on anything that isn't a guaranteed profit, which is why Robotech Academy had a kickstarter. Law suits over trademark infringements, on the other hand, are pretty much guaranteed profit (assuming you actually show up to court) so they don't mind doing that.

No, it doesn't. Yes, copyright/trademark/IP suits get filed constantly and under ridiculous conditions, but the reason is because anything that an opponent can argue you should have sued for, but didn't, actually weakens your own legal hold on that IP. I.E, HG not suing could be construed as precedent that they have abandoned their own copyrights. They're probably not attacking CGL, they're defending themselves - if perhaps a bit over-cautious.

The only issue is that usually these cases are thrown out routinely - in HG's case, they end up winning because CGL is a mismanaged, lazy company.
