***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

== THICK MS GROUPBUILD ==

Build a kit of your choice that's heavily armored, and thick in the thighs/arms/torso/general area. Examples include:
>Dom + Dom Variants
>The O
>Virtue/Seravee Gundams
>Gusion/Man Rodis
>Full Armor gundams (If they're heavily armored, and not guns strapped everywhere like the FA Unicorn)

Non-Bandai kits are allowed, so feel free to whip out a Frame Arms kit or something and work with that as long as you make it thicc as fuck.

Start Date: 6/15
End Date: 8/31
>>
>>15686497
What's the thinnest we can go while still being THICC?
I need examples.
>>
>>15686504

Personally, I don't much care for the leg lined in brown. It looks a little...warm, let's say. Almost orange or red tinged.

Considering the kit is wider than usual, I think the thicker lines on the legs look really good.

So the leg lined in gray, I guess.

Picked up. Not a huge Zaku fan myself, but it's stellar that the inspiration can be traced back all the way to his childhood.
I already liked the typical synopsis and the slight spoiler one on the publishing site though. I hope he gets the upcoming Master Grade, if an author even has time to build such a thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQj4lgp6Qdo&t=10s

Relatively new to gunpla but couldn't find an answer to this in the guide. I'm looking to buy some bases for my models and I know the differences between action base 1/2 but when watching some reviews on youtube I sometimes hear mention of action stands as an option to bases but when I look around I can't find anything about them. So do they exist or am I being rused by people on the internet?

Despite all the shitposting it gave us, I think I'm overall pleased with what the IBO line gave us. Got some fantastic grunt designs like the Graze and Man Rodi, got a few pretty standout Gundams too, like Vidar. And that's not even going into how easy the IBO line is for kitbashing and customizing.

If nothing else, IBO is a good indicator of where I hope gunpla engineering continues to go in development. Nice inner frames, easy to paint, and cheap.

It's step up from the 0080 kit, but it still predates the modern era of HGUCs. While it looks nice, don't expect a lot of articulation. The pose in the picture is pretty much the only two-handed pose you can do with the rifle.

As far as the Rick Dom II, I heard its excellent. Snap always tells me good things about it.

I don't know about the whole line or availability affecting price, but yeah. Awoken Unicorn is hovering around $110 (though I have a $25 amazon card), even coming straight from Bandai. Not too shocked, though. Figmas and RD figures are pretty much always more expensive than kits, and she has a good number of optional parts.

You don't handpaint all of your kits with no primer and while they are fully assembled? It's the truly refined technique!

It's not paint, I'm sculpting and now sanding down new extensions for the shoulders. You can compare it with this stock photo.
>>
>>15688207
The Bandai Tallgeese doesn't balance for shit either, mine is currently leaning against some stuff on the desk it's on because it keeps falling over. The Tallgeese just doesn't stand on its own as a kit, it needs an action base which I should order for it at some point.

The black on the thighs looks a bit sloppy because I used a micron there (Since i knew I'd never make it look good via paint at that thinness). The hands were masked, I just never got around to scraping off the excess on there, same with the red on the forearms

The Rick Dom II looks nice but has shit articulation, I regret buying mine.
>>
>>15689363
Can you mod at all? The Bolden Arms Arms pack from Gundam Build Fighters help add articulation if you're particularly upset about it.
>>
>>15687519
I assume that's styrene. How do you cut it so it fits those lines so perfectly? I haven't figured it out yet.
>>15688125
What are you using to sculpt?
>>
>>15689366
I can, I was considering modding it to somewhat modern standards of articulations. Though I'll check out that pack you mentioned.
>>
>>15689379
Yeah, it's got all sorts of ball joints and movement parts for getting older models up to standard, albeit with slightly altered design in the joints due to that. It also comes with a few armor parts, missiles, and missile launchers which just incentivize more customization. Funnily enough the promo photo shows it being used by a Dom.
>>
>>15689373

I use notecard to test complex pieces and just practice with styrene really. The shoulders have like a "skeleton" of styrene and then are coated in epoxy putty. I use apoxie sculpt but there are lots of good brands.
>>
>>15689421
Different anon. By skeleton you mean a couple cut pieces of styrene sheet glued together into a very crude basic shape that is then given the final details/thickness/roundness needed wth the apoxie? I've got the same putty myself and am wondering.

117KB, 640x601px
>>15689560
Yep basically, under the putty is a curved sytrene sheet with 3 bars under it connecting it to the plastic of the shoulder piece

>>15689767
Yeah, the notecard is really cheap and I can do things like fold it in half to make things perfectly symmetrical, then you just trim it until it fits, then use it as a template twice (or however many times) on the styrene.

>>15690420

What kind of putty are you using? My stuff starts out that way it just takes a lot of sanding. I try to always make sure I have more than enough material and then cut it with a knife and sand it down to shape. I also use water on my fingertips etc. to work with the putty, which doesn't impact it later.
>>
>>15689060
Neat, thanks.
>>
Are there any tips about lining stuff? The guide doesn't really go into detail here.

I bought a MG turn A some time ago, alongside some gundam markers (black and grey), but never started work on the lining. How easy is it to fuck this up? I prefer an unlined gunpla over one that looks like shit.
>>
>>15690750
It's really hard to fuck up lining, because everything can be cleaned. Just spray on some gloss first if you're really nervous and line away.

And you don't want the Turn A unlined. Trust me on this.
>>
>>15690331

>>
>>15690581
>What kind of putty are you using?
I also have apoxie sculpt, but I'm pobably putting too much material on. What grits do you use for sanding it down and then finishing?
>>
>>15690815

Short answer: I use everything from like 250 to 4000 depending on how much needs to be removed.

Long answer: I use a ton of different sanding stuff. I use stuff as low as 250 for serious removal, I have giant files for taking off tons of material, I also love love LOVE my "greatplanes easy-touch hand sander" which is a flat aluminum plane that you can attach adhesive backed sandpaper to. I'm sure it was overpriced like many hobby products, but having a super flat surface that is large has been really handy for a long time. I also use micromesh pads and these Hobby Stix Swizzle Stick Sanders. For the shoulders I got the shape pretty good this time, so I used 250 grit sandpaper, then 400 grit sandpaper, then a few different micromesh pads. I used regular tamiya primer (not fine) to fill marks, then I'll sand that down and put finishing primer on top when it's smooth.
>>
>>15690834

This thing just has so many awesome uses, like say you need to get the edge of a long styrene piece perrrrfectly straight, this thing makes it a piece of cake. Especially if you are doing something like the edge of a box, where you have 3-4 edges you need to make perfectly flat, this will do that easily where a file would not be as easy. Also instead of having to control a small piece of styrene and a small file which can change angle, this is so large you only need to worry about the angle of the styrene piece.

It also is great for shit like erasing surface detail you want to replace, it tears through plastic like an eraser with 220 grit paper on it, so if you are making a custom where you need to chop part of a big piece off and then get the surface perfectly flat, this thing is a lifesaver.

>>15690815

Also don't be afraid to shave the putty down with a knife first, it can safe a lot of time if you do it carefully.
>>
>>15690834
>>15690847

>>
>>15692797

When people use the term "surfacer" that's more like what I'm using it for here. When you start changing things a bunch like this there are many little things to check and fix and primer helps a ton with that. So the stuff here is not primed to get ready for paint, its primed to check for errors and fill small sanding scratches etc. So here I'm using regular tamiya primer and not fine primer, because I like the larger granule size for this. Before paint it will probably be given a surfacer 1500 coat that is the final step before actual paint.

Also primer helps you determine how things will look when painted one color. When you're working on changes you don't always know how they're going to looking when it's just sandy scratched plastic. Look at the beak area for example, it's like half white and half red, dusty and scratched. It would be really hard to tell if both sides are symmetrical for example.

I'd prefer not to work too much from scratch but if I can't find anything to bash it with then I may have to. My main concern is retaining the ability to use the shields on the arm so I'll have to sculpt around it. Thought about getting one of the build fighters option sets. This one actually has some pieces that seem like they'd work.

I've got leftover EZ parts I could cannibalize for it, so the I'd say using the option set ould be a good move if you're not confident in being able to sculpt pieces. My only concern with kitbashing has been that parts can sometimes seem odd with the kit they're added to.

Alright so I bought myself pic related because I wanted to try hand painting the GN condensers on a 00 wip.
I've been having a bit of trouble though.
I've been using a guide that said I can thin these paints with water so I've been going with a mixture of 3/5 paint and 2/5 water, but my results haven't been good.
The paint tends to be very watery and doesn't stick to the plastic.
Should I just get regular thinner, or go with spray cans for this?

Its hard for paint to stick without primer. If you're hand painting, you want to do it in small thin layers and build it up. Each layer you add will stick easier to the previous layer.
>>
>>15693620
Tamiya is not like other acrylics and has to be thinned with thinner, or isopropyl alcohol. I'm sure the guide mentioned that too, that tamiya is different from most acrylics. Also for the love of god PRIME your parts, it helps a lot.

Vallejo acrylics might work better, you can thin those with distilled water but not with normal thinner
>>

Again, in that case the guide was wrong as you see. Get some Tamiya acrylic thinner, or isopropyl alcohol. I have Tamiya and can confirm those things work. And use a respirator, Tamiya, even being acrylic, has harmful properties.

Jegan is very well made and cleans up super well due to the color of plastic. Nice base for customizing by being so plain.
Jesta is the same as Jegan (same frame) aside from cleaning nubs.
Build Strike looks neat.
Lightning is ok if you're fine with the look.
I dislike Transient's design but if it floats your boat it should be fine.

Don't get Impulse unless you're willing to do actual work with filling seams and painting because it's not up to modern standards.

MG Zaku II 2.0.jpg

Having decided to get through UC stuff in production order, a combination of just finishing Zeta and also going to Anime Expo for the first time has me itching to get some Gunpla for the first time in fifteen years. Rather than just going with snap-together HGs as I did before, though, I want upgrade to MGs and try out some of the actual hobby work. Not too enthusiastic about the painting part, especially seeing how much expensive airbrushing is emphasized. What I'm thinking, at least for now, is nub-sanding, seam-removing, panel-lining, non-sticker decals, and matte topcoat finish.

If I like it enough, I have my eye on the Nu and FA-78 Ver. Ka kits, but I want to start on something more basic. Currently considering the good ol' Zaku II, it's most current model apparently the MG MS-06F 2.0 from 2008. This space variant makes for a better choice than the MS-06J ground type from the previous year as it makes both ground and flying poses sensible options.

Is this a good path for me to go down, or is it advisable to do a different first model or hobby steps?
>>
>>15694724
>OO Raiser
Maybe, but I also want to build the rg at some point so I'd rather get a variant but I might go with the standard. Is seven swords too flimsy or anything?

Seriously though. Bandai Hobby produces the best toy plastic I've seen for any brand. It's amazing how tough they make 1.1mm thin polystyrene when you have toys with entire limbs and shit just cracking. There are some missteps but 98/100 times gunpla plastic is amazing
>>
>>15693364
If you're just looking for a neat desk toy yes. It will look fine snapped together with stickers. If you want something more presentable for display it takes very little effort to panel line and maybe dab in a few tiny details with paint.

I just finished mine and I wish more kits had effect parts. It's kind of a childish toy gimmick but I love it.
My only complaints about the kit besides those 3.0 hands which are just straight up inferior to the third party hands you can buy nowadays, are the way the ankle guards are connected and the fact that the underside of the little tube on the origin beam rifle is hollowed out to save plastic. Airbrush for the majority, lil bit of hand painting for the little bits. Just bought the airbrush and after a little practices I tried my hand at an actual build instead of spoons and scraps. Its been fun but... Difficult.
>>15697515
Wanna know the worst part, anon? I WAS using masks. I masked the fuck out of it, still turns out having frayed edges and whatnot. My heart is hurt just as bad as yours. Anybody got any tips on how to mask better? I've been using blue painters tape and US Art Supply airbrush acrylics.
>>
>>15697596
Blue painters tape is for wall painting not the intricate angles of a gunpla.

Get Tamiya masking tape. Period.
>>
>>15697047

what is the base kit?
>>
>>15697596
>blue painters tape

Throw that shit out and pick up some Tamiya tape instead. Regular painters tape is designed for large surfaces and won't properly mask model paint. I haven't heard of this US Art Supply brand but I'm not sure if that's meant to be used for model painting. Can you spray a layer or two onto a plastic spoon to show how thick it applies?

Of the kits I built it was easily the most difficult if only in terms of how much there was to build. There's a few parts that need glue, namely the horn and some boosters on the V.O.B. unit. The transformation is a little disappointing because the arms don't seem to seal up properly and the head doesn't sink into the chest like it does in promo materials although I'm not sure if this is because I did something wrong or if it's a problem on kotobukiya's end but since no one reviews these kits in English it's hard to tell. Also be careful with the two horns on the wings because they're really easy to snap off if you're not paying proper attention. As for seam lines the only ones you'd notice are the ones on the boosters and arms/legs.
>>
>>15698197
The XN Raiser is interesting. It's P-Bandai in Japan, but a regular release in every other part of the world. It doesn't have P-Bandai monotone color box art

>>15698922
First off: Thin your damn paints. This much should be hammered into your brain by now. Remember to work in multiple small layers instead of doing one big layer

Second: Grab a fine-detail brush. The shit at Michaels isn't gonna cut it, if you have a FLGS in your area check out the brushes they have there and either take a look at the sizes they have there and buy an equivalent at a local hobby store or buy the non-Games Workshop brand they stock there if they have one there (GW tools are overpriced as fuck and aren't really worth it outside of their glue, and even then I'm moving towards the Tamiya bottles these days)

If something leaks over, depending on the paint you're using it's a fairly easy cleanup. If it's a water-based acrylic paint like Vallejo or Citadel just apply some water to a clean brush and scrub away at it until it comes off. If it's something like Tamiya or Testors that's a bit harder to get off with just a brush. Lightly scrape the area with a toothpick or an x-acto knife if it's just a small touchup.
>>
>>15698972

Michaels sells ribbon that has wire on both sides, I grabbed a roll of that and folded it in half to get the size I needed, then attached a second wire at the bend using iron-on adhesive to keep both the wire and the two halves in place. The ribbon attaches to the backpack with a cut sprue that's ironed on the same way as the wire was.

Turns out, on the Megami Device site, if you do this, one of two things will happen:
