***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

**MELEE GROUP BUILD**

Build/paint a robot with a loadout focused on melee combat! Anything from shields to swords to lances to axes to bare fists is fair game. There's no room for ranged weaponry here, however, so anything resembling a rifle, Rocket Launcher, cannon, pistol, or any other ranged weapon is a no-go (Small ranged weapons that are built into the kit itself like head vulcans are ok, however).

More clarification here:
>If the body part has a built-in ranged weapon (head/chest vulcans, claw beams, etc), then that's fine. If it's a separate part like the Alex's arm vulcans it's best to leave those off.
>Melee weapons with in-universe ranged capabilities (Like the Kimaris's lance or the Gyan's shield) are fair game too.
>Any scale and any brand is fair game here, you're not limited to just using Gundams this time around.

Can I get any input on this color scheme? I'm not so sure the light gray on the bottom fits very well.

Specifically for a Full City.
>>
Can you paint coloured clear parts with transparent paint and actually get the result you want?

As in, if I paint a clear yellow piece with transparent blue, will it actually end up being blue or will I end up with a greenish look?
>>
>>15529659
It's probably gonna end up more blackish or greenish, but it definitely won't end up like the shade of blue you want.

What you can do however is recast the clear part using colorless, clear resin, then paint that your desired clear color.
>>
>>15529670

Hm, guess I'll settle for colours closer to the original then. I'm only interested in painting at the moment, but I'll keep the recasting in mind for the future.

MK II followed by the Raiser, and maybe the QanT and Exia if they are similar builds which I heard they are. I actually think the Raiser is a bit better than the Mk II, simply because the leg design is much more solid and doesn't come straight off the kit as a prebuilt inner frame.

I see a few places that need touching up, but they're mostly where two parts may have rubbed too vigorously. I'm tempted to just top coat everything and apply weathering at those places to cover it up.

It's my first paint job, so I'm kinda proud of it, but also see where there's room for improvement. Still not done, but I thought I'd post a WIP

How do you panel line RGs?

I'm used to MGs where the lines have more depth for a marker.
>>
>>15531183
It's different? What are you using for panel lining?

I do HGs and RGs the exact same way as MGs, fill in the line and remove the excess with my finger. I don't understand what trouble you're having.

Yeah painted and top coat.
I have the fine tip markers which are too thick for the thinner panel lines I feel.

You should thin the paint some more and make sure to paint in thin layers or you'll get those heavy textured surfaces you have. Also you should really top coat before assembling/posing since you'll just damage the paint like this (don't forget to let the top coat cure before assembeling).
>>

New to Gunpla. Completed HGUC RX-78-2 Revive, working on RG Mk II AEUG.

I like the kits and am planning my next purchase. Apart from the pic of Casval's RX-78 which I think looks amazing but is MG and from what I understand some sort of exclusive releasing later in the summer, I think what I'd like to do a GM model next.

What are the best GM kits in HG or RG? Or should I wait and try to get the RX-78/C.A. (will there be an HG or RG released for this at some point in the future?)
>>
>>15531605
There are no RG GM. And anything of Casval Gundam is pretty much garunteed to be p-bandai exclusive (There was already an RG of it).
>>
>>15531610

>>
>>15531615
To further continue on the HG side, this summer there is a great looking GM kit coming out for the build fighters OVA.

For the most modern/best articulated hg you have the thunderbolt and ground type GMs.

Other than that the sniper II, type C, Custom, III, II, Powered, Cardigan, and K-9 are all decent.

Really though just get whatever looks cool to you and don't be afraid of older hguc, especially the vanilla gm.
>>
>>15530194

That's my experience with the varnishes, unless I get the piece wet I feel like I'm doing nothing.

Try using retarder, it will allow the paint to be wet for a bit longer and makes it easier to see if you're actually painting.

Seconding >>15533148, for a first attempt and with rattlecans no less it looks great. I thought it was airbrushed. Don't get bummed by the nitpickers - there is obviously constructive criticism to be had if you want to get better but remember a few threads back someone shit on you for nubs that were pretty much just invisible. Real, though. Yeah, the paint is thick in some areas. Yeah, you scratched some paint off. Yeah, there were a few wee little nubs. Yeah, you went with a pistachio green. It still looks good for rattlecans.

What matters is that yesterday(?) you recognized that your paint scratched off and then you asked why, and now you have a sloution so as not to repeat it. You're making an effort to improve. That's more than most can say here.

>>
>>15533309
Look on Bluefin's catalog or talk to them directly. I ain't ever messed with Gundams before but Kotobukiya typically offers replacement sprues for sale. You might be able to get some from Bluefin or at the very least, a replacement sprue for a similar kit that might offer you some use if all you need is guns. Maybe if you're crafty you can bash a few bits together as a replacement.

If I remember right a couple years back some richfag bought a elyn hobby kshatriya kit (among other expensive kits) thinking he could just snap it together and topcoat it. He ended up getting super frustrated with it, breaking some parts, then coming on /m/ to complain. Instead of course, he got laughed at for his idiocy as at the point he had bought it the kit was well known for its problems around the gunpla community and a 10 second search on google could have told him so. He then proceeded to say that he just wanted to get rid of it and then got made when a bunch of people made him offers for the kit, even in its broken half built form. Last I remember is that he threw a tantrum and posted a pic of it in a trashcan saying he was throwing it out.

Or at least thats how I remember it.

Is topcoat clouding a problem with airbrushing, or is it a can only thing?

Yes, I checked the guide, mates.
>>
>>15533280

those nubmarks gave me PTSD
>>
>>15533519
It's an overspray/bad humidity thing. The clouding occurs when the flat coat pools and the flattening agent doesn't level correctly as a result. "Frosting" is basically when the flat is condensed into an area.

Airbrushing gives you more control but if you're stupid and soak the piece in spray or spray in bad conditions it can still happen.

Hello /m/,

I got a couple of 1/144 HG Petite'gguy's to mess around with, since Ive never painted a model before, and thought they would be good practice. I'm using Testor enamel, both in the tiny jars and spray form (spraying bigger pieces, hand painting the rest.)

I painted one without thinning the paint, just to see how it would work. But this one I plan on thinning the paint, in a 3 to 1 ratio.

I guess what Im asking is, are there any tips you could give me for hand painting, that wasnt covered in the guides? Thank you.

It wasnt top coated at the time of taking that pic, no. I found the plastic to have a very nice, almost matte finish to it, very high quality. >>

The shrink wrap is put on by the distributors, not bandai. Unless you are buying it from barnes & noble or some other store, they most likely will not be in plastic.

most of the kits I've ordered online don't come with shrink wrap, and they all came in fine, no parts missing or anything, though if the runners aren't in their bags that might be another story.

The boxes don't come shrink wrapped. That's something the individual store does before putting them on the shelf.

I make 80,000 a year so it's not bad.
The dilemma is that once you find a good job to feed your gunpla habit, you don't have the time to build them.
Plus I paint every one which really adds on the time.
>>
>>15534819
I have this same issue. O have a good enough job where I can feed my gunpla habits without a care. However, I'm usually so tired after work I just go home eat dinner and watch some TV during the week. I only really work on gunpla on the weekends. And depending if it's a busy weekend I might not even get a chance to work on gunpla. It took me a month and a half to do my group build project since I was painting. The only reason I got it done when I did was because I stuck to a schedule of getting certain things done by certain dates.

Here's the finished product. Just a quick pic I took with my phone. I know it's not the best and I don't have any thought that I'll actually "win" but it got me to try painting. Stiletto/Stylet complete. First off, not sure on which name is proper, and second, I would recommend never to pose a FAG much after painting. After adequate curing time, priming, careful moving, there was a lot of scratching going on during the photoshoot since the kit is so tight even after sanding connecting pieces. Praise Bandai for not having this issue. Still, it was fun to paint a girl figure, and definitely learned I should take it easy on where and how much shading I do on skin.

I have no experience with the G04 MG, but it sounds like the MG Alex from how you're phrasing that, and from personal experience with the Alex, it's pretty bad for an MG. Inner frame only a bit in the legs, joints are made in a way that it can't rotate a lot of things well, may just be mine for this one, but the screws in the shoulders make the shoulder joint loose and because of the rubber around it, it's a bitch to get out making it hard to hold its shield. In the end, I wouldn't recommend unless you want an MG representative of the Alex, and if the G04 is based on that, then I guess only get that if you like the design but don't plan to pose it much.
>>

I have the Vidar and while it's a good kit, I feel like the 1/100 is better for the design since more of it's features are defined better there (The sliding side skirts, the pistols actually coming off from the front skirts. Color separation on the thrusters helps too.

I can't speak for the Astaroth other than the fact I have the one releasing in June preordered.

I start at 800 if there's a good chunk left after filing, nipping. Then 1000 or 2000 before buffing.

Sorry for the naive sanding question, I actually work in molding and we just leave a tremendous ugly gate vestige on everything.
>>
>>15536409
You don't have to apologize, but understand that these sorts of questions are very common and as such are answered in both guides in the OP. They're there for your convenience.

I've seen other people say to sand in sequence from like 400-2500 or so, and other people cut them off with knives and then lightly sand the rest with like 1200. I personally only use 1000 now, and 3000 for polishing clear pieces to remove opaqueness. Find something that works for you.

I found the semi-lazy "trim with knife, then use medium grit" method pretty good for the kits I purchased when I got back into gunpla, but I'm a big dumbass who got a random generic modeling toolkit from Amazon so I'm not actually sure what grit I'm using. I was kinda fishing for numbers.

Yeah I should really start seam welding, I did an attempt on the arms on this kit as I were painting them assembled anyway, but I didn't end up actually fixing it, they were still visible once painted.

I only used a little bit of tamiya thin cement though, should probably have used their usual cement or their putty.

I chose to paint the gun dissassembled, so the thought of seam welding it didn't really come to mind, but I should have.

I'm deciding to upgrade the Freedom with parts from the ASF and regular SF. Thinking of using the ASF's backpack to mount the SF's Wings, which ups the Dragoon count to 10, mount the back cannons, and then the ASF's backskirt which also ups the beamsaber count to 4,

so it ends up with 10 x Dragoons, 2 Rifles, 2 cannons, 4 beam sabers and 2 railguns.

That's rad.

Great work, how did you do the chest and leg pistons? The look so much longer.
>>
>>15540609

I tossed the originals and remade longer ones with styrene. I made the structure at the bottom of the spine because if I copied the original style the pistons would have looked like a giant V because of the increased length
>>
>>15540629
Do you have wip pictures of that? I love this kind of stuff.

>>15540557
>>
>>15540640

Unfortunately not for this one, the spine was definitely the hardest part because the original is less than half the length. To make the new leg angles work, I had to curve the spine pretty heavily because the pelvis has to tilt forward more for the thigh armor to be tilted up more. It also makes it look more "alien."

The pistons are actually pretty easy to make. You take the thicker rod or tube (either works) and you cut it a little longer than you want. Then screw it into a chuck on a power drill. Turn the drill on and touch the lip of the tube to some coarse sandpaper and blammo, instant bevel. Then you just smooth that out and fit the smaller part of the piston on top.

Using tube for the larger part makes things easier because you can leave them separate for paint and just use friction to hold the rod and tube together, but for pistons this slim I had to use rod for both and mask.
>>
>>15540651

Also I use a drill rather than a dremel because styrene is much softer than a kit, and dremels melt styrene very quickly.

>>15540640

This was obviously really early in the process, but you can see the additional length and spine curve clearly. the lower legs were done just like the upper legs, but I have wrapped the lowers in epoxy putty already, which is then sanded down so it all looks like one piece
>>
>>15540651
>>15540653
Wow, I didn't even know there was such a thing as styrene rods and tubes.

>dremels melt styrene very quickly
Yeah, I've noticed this while sanding some bits for my groupbuild. The belt sander just kind of pushes material along and deposits half molten styrene on the far edge. It actually screwed up my plans of having a sharp edge on the sword I was making and I had to use a sanding sponge to salvage it.

keep animals out of the room, use a lint roller on your clothes, up the humidity a small amount (spray bottle of water or a humidifier), sweep the floor twice a day, vacuum the floor once a day (also mop the floor once a week if your floor isn't carpet), have a pedestal fan set to just lazily swing around the room on low speed, and lastly you should open up your windows and doors for a cross-breeze first thing in the morning (or last thing in the arvo if your room faces westward.) to make the most of that fresh air and sunlight.

Basically, clean yo shit up and you'll not have shit on yo gunpla.

Vallejo paints. More exactly, Game color turqoise and model color oxford blue for the blues. Gun and backpack is model air nato black, inner frame vallejo metal color steel.

Thanks. I've got a couple of old t shirts I'm going to cut up and experiment with. I think if I just cut a head hole and two holes for the arm pegs to fit through, I can make it work. Then I'll weather it and paint it. Hopefully some painting will make it rigid enough to hold for posing, but, we'll just have to see. It's an old American eagle shirt, so I'm tempted to try to work the logo into the cloak.

So I looked at the guide FAQ and i'm a little confused still, If i'm just topcoating should I only buy A2 organic vapour filters like these ones? Or would it still be better to get A2 and P3 filters?

Sorry for the silly question, just wanna be safe and i'm confused

Related question: if I'm only airbrushing vallejo, is there a need to replace the organic vapour filter or not? The particle filters seem to get a lot of paint stuck in them, but as safety is part of vallejo's marketing I'm not so sure about the a2 filters.
