***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

**MELEE GROUP BUILD**

Build/paint a robot with a loadout focused on melee combat! Anything from shields to swords to lances to axes to bare fists is fair game. There's no room for ranged weaponry here, however, so anything resembling a rifle, Rocket Launcher, cannon, pistol, or any other ranged weapon is a no-go (Small ranged weapons that are built into the kit itself like head vulcans are ok, however).

More clarification here:
>If the body part has a built-in ranged weapon (head/chest vulcans, claw beams, etc), then that's fine. If it's a separate part like the Alex's arm vulcans it's best to leave those off.
>Melee weapons with in-universe ranged capabilities (Like the Kimaris's lance or the Gyan's shield) are fair game too.
>Any scale and any brand is fair game here, you're not limited to just using Gundams this time around.

Wip of my groupbuild Full City. I'll get the main armor color done tonight, but I'm going to run out of paint, so I'll have to wait until Monday for my new paint to arrive to get the skeleton done.

Shitty pic, sword barely in frame on the left.

Here's an attempt at dirtying up the Ground Gundam. Need to make some actual damage on the plastic itself. Gonna look up techniques how to do that. Gonna also do a rust/steel look around some edges.

Also, I have no idea what to do with my pieces once the paint is dry. I settled for some old Chinese takeout containers.

Guy making super edgy Barbatos with Nataku dragon wings here.

Back from work and have to finish this kit off very quickly to make it in time for group build.

Primer gray with some small red/blue/yellow highlights or Liger Zero Schneider colour scheme?

Leaning towards latter.

This is one of my more successful attempts.

1. Brown oil paint filters to make it dirty
2. Brown oil paint making very small oil streaks
3. Black on top of brown oil paint to add chipping that looks like it's rusting.
4. White pencil for darker parts to add scratches/edge wearing, 4B lead pencil on light areas and on some dark to add metallic scratches

Still far from perfect. The best feedback I can give you is keep it small so that the scale looks right. The dirty patches you have are way too big compared to how dirt would actually build up. You also need to add it in the right areas, places like the feet/shields need more as they are the areas that would make more contact. Don't add weathering to the head unless there is a reason.

As for actual damage, I think you will need to learn how to paint details. It needs proper colour toning and texturing to look right. That's why I don't do it.
>>

>>
>>15543191
oh shi- will the legs swivel down for some 4 legged mode? Or is that a surprise for later
>>
>>15543220
Based on kit.

If i'm cutting nubs from Gundam that the part is smaller and the side is more angular and flat, it's easier to use the art knife.

I use sandpaper big curvy part like Acguy, but there's few kits that have the part like that so I rarely use it.

>>15543258
Try checking on Dalong.net, but most kit beside Striker pack line don't have the same backpack joint.

>>15543391
If it peel of quickly it might be something to do with the temperature and moisture, keep your waterslides with some silica gel.
>>
>>15542990
Yeah I've been hesitant about doing the actual damage for that very reason. I went for a lighter dirt covering on most of the body. I stuck to the edges and kinda worked my way into the center of a peice. Trying not to get the center dirty, just the edges. The look I'm going for is after a massive desert sand storm. I did do a bit heavier in the knees, feet and elblows. I may try to go a bit heavier on those. I was planning on doing a more heavy rusted look on certain edges. This was just a first pass over to give the whole thing a sandy look from being in a sand storm.

And yes despite the huge scale, if the storm was crazy enough, it will look like that after the fact. But yeah I'll have some smaller heavy dirt areas in some places.
>>
>>15542971
Definitely go with Schneider
>>
>>15543191
Dude, instead of rubber bands, use some sort of thin leather or flat straps.

>>
Anyone here have the Delta Kai?

Looks like it might have some balance problems, but do want.
>>
>>15543541
No, use coated wires till it looks like it is being tied with cables. Bonus point for a noticeable end tail.

To be on the safe side, use some 3M double sided tape on the contact areas for a firmer adhesiveness.
>>
>>15543615
>being tied with cables
This is kinda what I was (poorly) trying to get across.

I endorse this.

I blew through this Zaku Sniper in an afternoon and am already starting to paint it. I want to give weathering a shot, so I'm keeping the desert colors. I was also able to salvage a 35mm triple machine gun off an old Gouf Custom. Won't be keeping the spiked shoulder from that kit, though. I'll probably stick with the normal Zaku I type shoulder armor instead.
>>
>>15543409
I have that idea too, but can't pull it off decently, so for now I will just use the space type legs as extra thruster.

>>15543541
>>15543615
Actually, the rubber bands are there for the purpose of helping me tested where should I put the blade sets on man rodi's arm, at this time I hadn't connected these part together yet. So after painting all the part, I will use cement or other method, the rubber bands are not in the finished product.
>>
>>15543732

I'm planning on buying a spray booth soon, but I have nowhere to set it up except my room.
How bad of an idea is it to spray toxic paints in the same room I eat, sleep, and pretty much spend 98% of my time in?

would painting and then leaving the room to air out with both windows open for like two or three hours be good enough for making the room less hazardous to be in?

For my first Zaku, I'm really happy with how this one turned out. I really want to do something with it. Any ideas, guys?
>>
>>15544162
I have, but I don't like how acrylics come off so easily. I heard enamels and lacquers don't have that problem. I heard they're better looking when finished, too.

Besides, even if acrylics aren't hazardous like the other two, I still feel like having any kind of paint fume in my room while I'm in it would hurt my plans of living a very long and fulfilling life. Or maybe, it won't and I'm just being too overly cautious. That's what I'm hoping to find out. I really want to paint, but I also really don't want to die.
>>
>>15544190
Acrylics don't come off so easy if you let them cure and topcoat it.

But the real difference here is non-toxic vs. toxic. Take your pick.

Personally, I'd go with the non-toxic acrylic and switch to enamels and lacquers when your situation changes.
>>
>>15544211
That's true, I forgot about topcoating for a moment there.

Guess I'll go with acrylics for now, thanks for the advice anon. Vallejo is a good acrylic brand, right?

It's the only one I ever hear of so I don't know what else to compare it to.
>>
>>15544220
Tamiya is always a good one. And they offer spray cans if you don't airbrush.
>>
>>15544220
I think it's pretty good. Reaper is fine. Avoid Citadel. I don't know anything about Badger's paint.
>>
Anyone have that pic of a Mk II painted in RX-78-2 colors?
>>
>>15544241
Tamiya makes acrylics? Thought they were all lacquers or something. Neat.

>>15544245
Thanks anon, I'll look up Reaper too.
>>
>>15544220

Vallejo is good. One drawback is that the primer isn't sandable though. I am 100% vallejo at the moment but will at least be switching primer to lacquer like mr surfacer.

I live in a 1 room apartment, but I figure that if it's only the primer that is lacquer and I keep the spray booth running it shouldn't be too bad.

Cut them and remove them. Use some hobby nippers (Xurons Are a good start) and various grades of sandpaper from 800-2000 or so. I mostly use 800 to remove excess and then the 1000 to smooth it out.

You don't need that many different grits, I just go to the auto parts store and get 500, 1000 and 1500.

Is panel lining and topcoating really necessary?
>>
>>15544588
Not everyone paints every single model.
>>
>>15544658
No, but they can make a midel look more detailed on the case of panel lining, and the tipcoat can either protect a finish or alter it to appear more matte/glossy as wanted. That said, neither is necessary if you just snap build for fun.

How are these colors for a graze custom build? I've got parts from a Kai and a schwalbe to use. Not to mention all the leftover parts from a barbados build. Just trying to nail down a color scheme.
I figured I could use some old decals from other kits, and probably mask some edges for some sort of pattern to be painted on the larger flat regions.
>>
Usually I use waterslides, but on the RGs there's those metallic stickers which look nice. But I'm not confident they'll stay on.

Will a top coat help? Should I attempt to super glue the stickers on?
>>
>>15545222

I used a few of the metallic stickers on my RG zeta, but I cut all of the excess clear sticker material away by hand before putting it on the kit. I topcoated afterwards and they are definitely not going anywhere. As long as you don't have any air gaps or edges sticking out they will stay down.
>>
So is it true Waterslides are really hard to put on?
Recently got into the hobby and have a few kits that need them, I bought Mr Mark Setter and softer too
Can I just put them on the kit or do I need anything to make them smoother first?
>>
>>15545304

They can take a bit to get the hang of but they're easier than stickers when you do. Softer is a lot more useful than setter if you are topcoating. Make sure your clear is strong enough to stand up to softer though, it can eat some weaker clears. Also don't be afraid to leave the decal slightly wet where you place it. When I was first doing waterslides I would try and stamp them down when really they work better with softer if you leave them slightly damp and let them dry to fit the surface.
>>
>>15545304
It's super easy, and they look great.

Wet the decal for like a minute and then place it where you want. That's it, anything else is just to make it easier for you.

My advice though is get a fine tip q-tip because they make it easier to move the decal around.
If the surface is wet with either water or mr. Mark Setter you move the decal around to get it in the exact spot you want.
Just make sure to soak up the excess water with a normal q-tip once its in place to keep it from moving around.

And don't touch that area for a good 10 minutes after placing the decal, they can sometimes stick to your hands while they are still wet.
I normally blow dry it a bit to make sure they stay put. But don't blow dry it too much otherwise it might wrinkle.

Go easy on the mr. mark softener, it can eat away at acrylic paints. It works by breaking down the decal, so if you touch it while its wet it will warp the decal. I don't often use it, I always use mr. setter though.
>>
>>15545352
>>15545371
Thanks guys, gonna have a go at them tomorrow, just hate having some of my kits look bare since i've yet to get into painting etc too, I feel i'm gonna have trouble with the curved ones, I always do for stickers at least
So again, just for a quick rundown, I wet the decal after cutting it and the back out of the sheet, apply a small amount of setter to where I want the decal, apply it by lightly taking it off the back sheet, and then just let it set and dry in?
Thanks again
>>
>>15545380
1. Cut the decal, if its an official Bandai one the shape can be really rough, 3rd party you might need to cut it closer to the edges.
2. Soak the decal in a small thing of water.
3. Apply mr. setter to the area.
4. Move the decal off the sheet to the area with a q-tip, if the decal or the area is wet enough you'll have time to place it exactly where you want it.
5. Let it dry
6. Go crazy and Katoki the shit out it

pretty good. but due to thin blade cutter, tool ended up with memes if you handling in a poor manner.

Mineshima D3A-600 could be an option. I got one of those, did blade sharpening & improvisation tool (rivet tightening & oil lube), it works like magic.
not sure about Xuron but as long you know how to sharpening & improvisation of tool in a correct manner, you'll be fine & stick with it without any second thoughts of godhand.

still, refinery of nub removal after using normal cutters beats everything else, include godhand & it's meme.

Different anon, here.

In that regards, why did we only get four 1/100 no grades on the second half of IBO? As far as detailing goes, the later 1/100's of S1 has Full Mechanics level panel lines and there is hardly a difference in frames. Yet, we got a whole slew of different kits for the first half but not the second.

Did Bandai just blow their load too early or what's up with that? A 1/100 Full City and Flauros seem like things that should've been but weren't.

Here is the answer to your question, and literally any question involving "why didn't Bandai make a kit of this":

They decided it wouldn't sell well enough.

Frame arms are pretty fun kits, color separation is good. Pretty posable, but its based on the inner Frame Architect which then armor is put on, which can limit the articulation. May require glue, anytime I've built a FA I usually glue some of the parts like the two halves of the hips and thighs.

Both GM and Zaku got primed and topcoated with Rust-oleum spray cans and hand painted with Testors enamel jars. The process was Disassemble > Prime > Hand paint > Gloss Coat > Details > Flat Coat. On GM I used black and gray Gundam markers for panel lining while for the zaku I just used gray paint.

Setbacks, Anon.

I'm finishing up the paint on my Full City tonight. I'll probably topcoat it tomorrow, just to be safe from any side effects to the paint and to let it dry, at least. It should have a week to cure, and then I need to put it together and pose, take pictures, and resize/upload them all in one day.

It's my first paint job, and while I've exceeded my expectations, I don't know how much to thin this Vallejo polyurethane varnish. It doesn't want to spray.

With all of these setbacks with my family, life, learning to airbrush, running out of paint, and basically starting this hobby shortly before the groupbuild started, I'm going to have to turn this project in absolute last minute. I hope Groupbuild Dude doesn't mind.
>>
>>15551178
Sounds like you've done some hard work there Anon, good job. Can't wait to see the results!
>>
>>15551178
IIRC there were actually a bunch of quite literally last minute entries for the Graze groupbuild, so as long as you get it in you should be fine.
>>
>>15550328

It's a really outdated kit.
>>
Question for you guys. I'm starting to advance into airbrushing, and I'm looking at Mr Hobby paints. Is there any advantage to going with the airbrush surfacer over the spray can ones? I remember years ago when I was still using spray cans, I just moved from Rustoleum primer to Tamiya fine primer in the spray can, and I was blown away at how much smoother it was.

Also, I noticed there's a black primer in Mr Hobby's line. Can that be used as a substitute for the initial black coat when doing chrome/candy coats?
>>
>>15551240
Airbrushing your primer is a hell of a lot cheaper. That jar should last quite a few kits if you thin properly. Its also much less wasteful when you need to go back and fix a seam you missed or similar.

Finished mine the second week of May. It turned out pretty good. I only got around to taking decent pictures this weekend. Submitted my entry yesterday. Feels pretty good to be done. I already posted the finished product in this thread somewhere.

Thanks homie. It was my first attempt at painting and was done with rattle cans. There are certain parts of it that won't satisfy my autism so I've just relented that it will never be 100% perfect but I'm satisfied. I had such a good experience painting I'm going to give my GM Sniper II a custom paintjob. I've downloaded some linework and have started messing with color schemes. I may also invest in an airbrush.

Do it. Custom GMs are always cool. I decaled mine today, and I'm messing around with an old t shirt trying to get a cloak going. It's more of a PITA than I thought it'd be, honestly.
>>15554272
Some of the IBO kits are around that. Maybe the Graze commander.

Check gundammodelcenter for third party kits

Yeah, I bet it's a pain.

The worst was trying to figure out which style of cloak looked better. I decided using a neck hole and a Right shoulder hole worked better for what I'm doing.

I've got it painted dark green now, and I've gloss coated my GM to seal the decals in. Once that's dried for a while, I'm gonna weather and try the cloak on. Then it's just waiting for that Koto sniper rifle.

Potato tier pic incoming.

>for a mech that has like 5 minutes of screentime and has zero plot significance?

to be fair that's like every IBO suit

Good luck with the weathering.

If I'm picking up some generic hardware store-tier lacquer thinner to use as cleaner, is there anything I should avoid, or just go for the cheapest stuff?

Guys I'm in need of some opinions - what would be the closest Tamiya TS colour to the Gouf 2.0 main body colour?

I'm looking to repaint the Ral Zaku I main body to be closer to the 2.0 I'm semi-certain of TS23 but I'm open to opinions. Anything would be appreciated.

The cloak dried, so I painted again and let it dry some more. Testing it on the Jesta since the Sniper is drying.
Got a couple more pics.
Does it look like crap?

Liking the cloak so far, seems fitting for the suit.
>>
>>15554645
Looks pretty cool man, makes me want to try something like that out. Might make one for my overly weathered Vidar to lessen the impact lol.
>>
>>15554665
Thanks. I'll probably toss it on the GM tomorrow.
>>15554667
Do it man. Something about weathered suits with cloaks looks cool to me. I made the same mistake damaging this Jesta. The cloak makes up for it somewhat.

Does anyone know if the Kimaris Vidar has the same issues handling the weight of it's weapons the Kimaris did?
>>
>>15554645
I like it.

My groupbuild is done aside from varnish, which I'll do tomorrow to make sure it's had enough time to dry first. I'll post a pic in the next thread since this one isn't long for this board.
