***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

**MELEE GROUP BUILD**

Build/paint a robot with a loadout focused on melee combat! Anything from shields to swords to lances to axes to bare fists is fair game. There's no room for ranged weaponry here, however, so anything resembling a rifle, Rocket Launcher, cannon, pistol, or any other ranged weapon is a no-go (Small ranged weapons that are built into the kit itself like head vulcans are ok, however).

More clarification here:
>If the body part has a built-in ranged weapon (head/chest vulcans, claw beams, etc), then that's fine. If it's a separate part like the Alex's arm vulcans it's best to leave those off.
>Melee weapons with in-universe ranged capabilities (Like the Kimaris's lance or the Gyan's shield) are fair game too.
>Any scale and any brand is fair game here, you're not limited to just using Gundams this time around.

May as well continue my discussion from last thread.

Do you guys exclusively buy online or buy over priced kits at your local hobby to shop to 'support small businesses' ? Im a leaf so kits tend to be overpriced.
>>
>>15428037
I'm a leaf as well, I buy locally sometimes if I see a unique kit on the shelves

Also for any fellow Edmontonians I've noticed that happy harbor comics has pretty decent prices when they get good kits in.

If I find a decent kit locally for 10-15$ I'll usually get it. Other than that, about 99% of my stuff comes from the inter webs.
>>
>>15428037
I've purchased a few kits from a local shop. They're HGs and they weren't to expensive. Like $5 more than online. I buy my paints and supplies from him though.

>>15428037
Most of the shops near me aren't overpriced. There's also a mecha toy show twice a year with good prices, and they let you haggle.

However, I went to this place once that I couldn't fucking believe.

>HG ZZ for $40
>MG Double X for $80
>SD Knight for $27

What the fuck are they thinking?
>>
>>15428261
a HG jesta canon at one of the shops near me is 45$, a MG V gundam was 85$, those are some i just remember.
>>
>>15428037
I buy where I get the most value. Japanese kits and tools I get directly from Japan because it's the cheapest. Other stuff like paint is not easily available online and easy locally. Non-Japanese kits of aircraft, ships and armor are very much competitive still locally.

There's no local place selling anything that I know of. I'm smack dab in the middle of Memphis and Nashville, so I'd have to find a tiny mom and pop place that just sells "nerd stuff" and hope they have Gunpla. So I basically order everything off Amazon. If I see a kit I like, I just add it to cart and save it for later. I'll also order other supplies whenever I order a new kit like markers, paint, etc. I'm probably going to order some weathering stuff next time. Think I'm going to go for a beat up looking Jesta/GM sniper buddy cop team.

In other news, I'm panel lining and reassembling my Jesta. This kit is kind of defeating to panel line since everything is so dark you can't see it anyways. Do you guys use a color other than black for these navy parts? All I've been using thus far is black and gray.

The problem with the RG Zaku isn't the pipes, they're actually surprisingly solid.
The front skirts are an absolute scourge though. They fall out every single time you move the legs. The bit that holds the bazooka in storage on the back of the waist hardly works as well.
But apart from that it's a good kit.

>>
Is that new Dom Tropen the unicorn version, is it just a remold of the one thats been out for awhile? And is it p-bandai?
>>
>>15429479
I dunno, the designer just wanted it that way? Both the GM Sniper II and the Jegan happen to be designed by Yutaka Izubuchi.

The Jesta is by Hajime Katoki, but is modeled as a next generation general purpose machine that can succeed the Jegan, so there's some design commonality in some of the more aesthetic bits like visor.

In-universe, the GM Sniper II and other similar machines such as the GM Command and cold climate types are built on a somewhat different design basis and frame than the original GM. The frame originated from the Federation's Augusta base, and is supposed to be somewhat more capable and expensive (since it does form the basis for the higher end GM variants like the Sniper II, Command) but less compatible with the regular GMs and GM Kais being produced en masse at other locations.
>>
>>15429494
Thanks for clarifying.

>>15429482

I think you're spraying either too close, or in a high humidity area. I can see the primer caking up on the top right. Spray further away, and in multiple thin coats.

>GN particle wings,
If they could make proper wings finally, that'd be nice. I wonder if they could pull it off really, just because of its nature.
Either way, still going to work on a fiber optic, LED and other materials version to try and imitate that particle effect.

>FA parts
[spoilerI caved in and bought the RD[/spoiler] since the 1/144 of it never came out (might to a Trans-Am version).
Anyway I understand it wasn't a terribly popular Gundam, but it would indeed be unfortunate for those parts to be P-Bandai. Maybe if it came with effect parts for its weapons it'd be okay.

Just preordered this. Does anyone have the old release? Is it a good kit? Also 1999 says the astronauts are resin

>- New to add a resin made of astronaut figure 3 body, is set to 1 scene it can be reproduced with a tension in the space of just before disconnecting the Hubble Space Telescope from the space shuttle.
Can anyone confirm this is true or a mistake from machine translation?
>>

>>
>>15429659
I got the Hasegawa 1/200 kit a month or two ago, it was a pretty good build and looked decent even without paint. The only thing that's a pain is that if you want to use the stand, you have to cut the hole yourself.
>>
>>15429667
Glad to hear all that, I was a bit worried it was a poor kit given the cheap price. Thanks.
>>
>>15429492

It's the same old HGUC kit with slightly different colors and 1-2 new extra hands thrown in.
>>
>>15429701
Why would anyone buy one then?
>>
>>15429768

Because Bandai thinks they can sell anything after selling about 20 variations of the Unicorn.

See the new Gundam Tristan reusing most of the old HGUC Alex and the P-Bandai Zaku III being a recolor of the ancient HGUC.

>>15428717
The Jesta is a fun kit, but when I get it done, I've got the Sniper in the box waiting to be built. The Jesta is neat, but it has a few poorly placed nub areas imo on some flat surfaces that are hard to get rid of cleanly/easily. Aside from that, it's been cool.
>>
>>15429794
>20 variations of the Unicorn

Reality is worse. Over 100 variations of the HGUC Unicorn Gundam alone have been released.

http://minkara.carview.co.jp/userid/480376/blog/35991309/

And that's as of July 4th, 2015.
What about now?
What happens if one counts all the other grades as well?

Holy shit.
No wonder Unicorn won the spot for the 1:1 statue.
I am still mad it won't be 00 Gundam or Exia (was hoping they'd get it as a celebration of 00's tenth anniversary).

>>
>>15429996
Valid point.
Still, they are very similar, and even without counting Phenex and Banshee, we're looking at probably something that rivals even RX-78-2 and the Zaku II in terms of variations.
>>
>tfw group build starting to get close to done

>>
>>15429451
I don't much like the scale of 1/144. HG don't have enough detail for me, and RGs fall apart if you look at them wrong.

I like MG's but depending on the suit the eat up a lot of shelf space. Still they look the most bad ass on display, and they are much easier/funner to detail.

Bandai doesn't seem much interested in the MG or the RE100 line though.
REEEEEEEEE
>>
>>15429451
Some kits are never released in the other lines. But typically I view HG as a last resort if I can't get a kit in any other grade. Gimmicks really make a kit for me, there's nothing better then being impressed with the engineering of a kit while building it.

I'm jealous. I'm still snapping mine together. Should have the actual build done this weekend. I have a doctor's appointment today so I'm taking a half day from work. I should have time to work on it more today before and after my appointment. I generally don't work on my kits during the week. I'm usually too tired after work. Shining is coming along though. I got all the limbs assembled. I need to come up with a good method when painting to not mix up any of the peices. Some of the leg and arm armor looks similar and I don't want to mix parts up. I mean I can always look at the manual but still.

I will if it's reasonable. If they're offering an hg for 30 dollars or less, I'll bite the bullet and support my local business.

Ive been thinking about doing a soviet one with the guntank I have. It seems just bulky and square enough. It all depends on the final result of nazi bot though. Also to get the decals/kit/nice paint, this is probably the most expensive built ive done.

I usually buy from my local hobbytown. It's good for buying single kits, and I like the people. I'll buy online if I'm buying more than 1-2 kits at a time, or if I'm trying to get a recently released kit asap.

I'm actually building a PG Unicorn that I bought from my hobbytown, that they were selling for $210 dollars. I got it at about $190 or so after joining their facebook group and getting 10% off on all gundam kits in their store.

>Greater selection of suits.
>1/144 scale more space efficient
>Low chance of weight issues out of the box on account of small size
>Cheaper

Also tend to prefer lower amounts of surface detail/panel lines. e.g. the 1/100 FM IBO line just overdoes it with panel lines as far as I'm concerned. Their HG counterparts look much better on top of being able to hold up their weapons much better imo. Exhibit A being the Rex.

Dirt cheap price point also makes it easier to try new things without feel too burnt if you fuck it up. Pic related.

Christ, what is it with phone pics never posting upright. Is it a resolution issue?
>>
>>15432506
It's an Exif thing
>>
>>15432506
No, it's because when you take a photo like that, your phone attaches metadata that tells your phone's image reader to rotate the image when viewed. Regardless of board, 4chan strips this metadata when images are uploaded, so it goes back to being sideways or upside down. The solution is to either manually rotate and then save out your images to correct the rotation, or transfer them to PC and upload them there.

I feel like we should put something like "Save out your images manually before posting, or they'll end up rotated sideways" in the OP, since it happens so damn often now.

Just a little bit~

I recommend giving the Rick Dias a shot even if it is a bit of an old clunker, I was quite surprised by how detailed its construction was despite looking like such a simple design on the surface. Ditto for the Messala.

As for some minor issues some kits may present... The Palace Athene looks like garbage out of box due to the 'washed out' quality of its plastic. Save this one for when you learn to paint. Also ditto for the Gaplant, although to a much lesser extent. And of course, the only Byarlant kit available is its Unicorn counterpart which is a hit or miss re-interpretation. Other than that, enjoy yourself and take your time!

No problem, I'm always happy to see Zeta get more love even if it is already quite popular. Its designs will always be the best of the franchise IMO, even if there are a few other series that are better watches overall.

(And man, I have got to learn to stop taking pictures directly from my computer desk because that angle is soooooo baaaaaad...)

Here's a better photo btw.

That 1/100 Overflag

It has a noticeable lack of details and the lineart doesnt translate so well into model kit form

Of course I started with and only have MGs, so that might be why I have something against it

using an airbrush, looks like they painted the pink first and then added the white and carefully air brushed around the edges so it wont completely cover the pink edges.
i assume its pink first judging the pink flower on the wing, using masking to cover that section and have the white over it so it stays pink underneath the tape.
dont know what the technique is specifically called, but its similar to shading/gradiation, but with 2 very different colors

sorry for the wall of text, but i believe thats how they achieved that effect

Not at the moment but I've got a couple things in mind.

One is going full mecha with lots of gray tones and some coloured highlights or just use the Nataku colour scheme. Probably going to use yellow/gold for all the claws and spikes.

I definitely think a light colour scheme would work best though.

So I got this kit for 10 bucks off of Amazon (along with some Tamiya top-coat, going to practice top-coating for first time on some other stuff before applying here) this thursday, but then half-way through building and painting I got real lazy and just kinda let this model sit there and sit there. Never done this with a model kit before, just drop it half-way into the process and just let it sit there?

Also anyone else got Astaroth, if so can you post picture of its legs from various angles? I am trying to get an idea on how to paint certain leg parts (in a way that I like it) but most of the pictures of this model kit tend to have the legs hidden due to the side-flaps.

Thanks in advance.

The arms, head fins, and the blue was all hand painted with acrylic.

looks like you didn't thin your brown paint at all it looks way too thick ESPECIALLY on the antenna. You needed to go over another coat to get green spots you missed on the "edges" of the armor like for the wrist and part of the hand guards.

It would also look a bit more cohesive if you used a matte topcoat on your green so it's not two matte colors with a glossy green.

Good first attempt my man but I would highly suggest stripping your paint, getting your ratios down for thinning, and just starting over on the frog.
>>
>>15436297
When I get home, I can take a few pictures of the legs I painted. Don't have him on me otherwise I would. It's pretty easy, just need a dark grey and black for the inner calves. Hardest part was the green in the side shirts if you ask me.

So i just bought my first gunpla after being on the fence for more than 20 years. I fucking -loved- this design. possibly my favorite main suit in all of gundam. Am i in for a pile of shit? or is it a good way to start out?
>>
>>15436938

naturally i meant the original design, not the 6th form ;)
>>
>>15436938
It's a decent way to start, though the joints have a rep for being pretty loose. I recommend searching how to tighten them first.
>>
>>15436938
You're a pile of shit manchild who made a decent choice in a first kit.
>>
>>15436953

way back around 15 years ago i heard that using clear nailpolish on balljoints was a good way to tighten loose joints - has gunpla evolved away from balljoints to something else now?
>>
>>15436797

Still waiting on a MG Age-3 or Powered GM that uses a better skeleton frame.
>>
>>15436972
Most of the balljoints are pegs now but the basic concept remains the same.

Vallejo paint always looks separated in the bottle to me. It's fine, though.

My warhammer place also has a lot of vallejo paints, though they are getting rid of the model colours. I guess they don't sell.
>>
>>15437058
As I understand it, Vallejo's Game Color line is really bad with separation in green and blue paints, which makes it really just more of a hassle to get it mixed back up after a long sit, and having to mix it more thoroughly every time you want to use it than their other lines.

I'm sure it's fine, but the fact that there's a layer of dust caked on the bottles and rack really makes me worry.

>>15437322

It's not like SAL costs much.
>>
>>15437477
Not that anon, but to ship to my shithole it usually costs double the price of an average HG. It is a waste to buy only one or two kits.
I'm actually trying to get a friend into gunpla so we can buy kits together and save on shipping.
>>
>>15437477
SAL normally costs close to EMS last I checked unless you're buying HGs, so I'd rather just get the EMS for security of mind and not anxiously waiting at the mailbox for a month to two.

I bit the bullet and just bought another kit for the order. GM II, Destiny RG deactive, and Build Gundam Mk. II, which I plan to use for being a dedicated painting practice kit.
>>
>>15437492

Depends on the size of the order man. I agree that if you are buying a ton of HG:s or several MG:s, you may as well go witth EMS since the price per kilo actually goes down the larger the order is.

However, that doesn't change the fact that SAL (not SAL package mind you, but SAL that is within the weight/space limits) is pretty cheap.

Thanks anon, I just wanted to get some ideas jumbled together as some inspiration if to go through normal ol colour-schemes or deviate abit. As you can see it was fun to do under the armor and I'll make a small picture collage when I get back from from work to show the back with and without backpack along with the other side of this leg (which I have actually taken the time to paint). The biggest thing holding me from finishing the kit is really just how I want the colours to look, as I am not sure if I want to repaint the whites and blues on the kit or just topcoat the default plastic and call it a day. Also might darken the front bits on the face-guard too and add abit more detail to the head in general.

Beam sabers and beam effect parts that have weird nubs. Not only is the sanded part obvious, but it leaves stress marks that can be seen throughout the entire part.
