>>
He didn't manufcture his gas from the blood of children and he didn't have an army of kaizoningen.

So nah.
>>
>>15393704
Who is that even supposed to be? You didn't provide any information whatsoever.
>>
>>15393756
A cult leader that gassed a bunch of people on the subway with sarin int he 90s. Forgot the name.
>>
>>15393756
That is Shoko Asahara, leader of this batshit crazy Japanese doomsday cult in the 80's-90's. The cult did this massive satin gas attack in the mid-90's and killed and injured a lot of people.
>>
>>15393756

Shoko Asahara, the founder of Aum Shirinkyo, the doomsday cult that carried out the sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway in 1995.
>>
>>15393756

Amusingly enough, Solbrain had a not-that-unlikely depiction of that cult, via an analogue.

GAS TKOYO!
>>
>>15393756
Chizuo Matsumoto; later known as Shoko Asahara. Ran a cult in the 1980s and 1990s that started out as a scam to lure nerds in by promising to give them supernatural powers, then when his prophecy of armageddon was running out time decided to make it happen by gassing the Tokyo underground in an attempt to ultimately bring about WW3. Could have had a death toll in the thousands but fortunately it wasn't done properly (still had people dying and thousands injured though).
>>
>>15393704
Didn't he claim to be able to float
Would have loved to see the wiring effects for that

So he made everything kinda glossy?
>>
>>15393790
yup. and the show had a running from 91-92 didn't?
heh, and then one of the stupid nerds worked on solbrain
>>
fucker even had a anime to promote the cult

>>15393704
if I made a cult I would just have sex with the women in my cult
putting gas in subways is retarded, then the cops show up and the party is over
>>
>>15393841
He kinda boxed himself in by saying the world would end in 2000 or so.

So he tried to do a weird gambit where he'd kill thousands in these gas attacks and that would lead to him somehow getting the US to attack Japan and WW3 would break out.
>>
>>15393834
Only many years later I learn that this animu Jesus gif I saw was actually a cultist terrorist.
>>

ikr?!

>So he tried to do a weird gambit where he'd kill thousands in these gas attacks and that would lead to him somehow getting the US to attack Japan and WW3 would break out.

He should've gotten Japan to quit paying US banks. That gets them to attack you for human rights violations.
>>
>>15393883
I thought that was trying to go onto the gold standard.

People always focus on the Sarin attacks, but they murdered eighty or so people who were cult members who either tried to leave or who upset chubby esper there.

It's actually pretty catchy.
>>

The first game was clearly inspired by them, if that's what you're asking.

You have to realise that Aum wasn't famous just for that one incident. They'd been operating for far longer and had done things like brazenly murdering a lawyer who'd been opposing them in his own home, and making his entire family just fucking disappear (no bodies were ever found except for his).

Yep. They did an episode of Solbrain that was a mishmash of Aum Shinrikyo and Happy Science.

They convince this guy who's accidentally put on near invincible underwater power armor (but doesn't know what it is) that he is god, and when he is no longer useful, tell him to immolate himself so that he may "take the prayers of the faithful to heaven".

He almost falls for it, mainly because he has low self esteem and really wants to be a part of something special.

Luckily SolBraver talks him down but lonely people can believe extraordinary things when they feel lonely enough.
>>
>>15394640
as opposed to ufo type religions like Heaven's Gate or Scientology or the Raeliens?

Newsflash Japan doesn't have the market cornered on stupidity.
>>
>>15394848
>what is the proportional size of a population?
anyway, I'm just gonna chalk it up to Japan never having their Pagan roots squashed like most other cultures even other Asian ones (Buddhism) so maybe they're more prone to believing in hokey shit idk

iirc Happy Science has some ayyyyylmaos

But yeah, Japan has its fair share of religious nuts and cults.
I've heard legends that one reason why Scientology guys do nerd bait shit so much is that Scientology is still salty that they can't get over in Japan so they keep trying with their boys in scifi flicks.

Also probably vaguely relevant to this thread is that the Mormon Jesus cartoon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0a3eJC3qAFU is narrated by the guy who did the intro for the Smithee Dune https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7FcJwg6OkA

The Japanese market for sects is pretty much stuffed. You really aren't going to make headways with soylent green and empty boxes when they got a couple of hundreds of years of nativist sectarian movements, many of which are deeply tied into nationalist sentiments.
>>
>>15394931
>>15394958
Good thing I'm not an American then eh? Chill the fuck out, you're straight up uninformed (inb4 burden of proof whining) if you think there aren't more Japanese cults per the population level than usual in 1st world counties. Doesn't mean they're the worst about it, I also think it's pretty bad in America too although I've only ever vacationed there. Doesn't mean im bashing Japan or their culture or ethnicity in any way, for fucks sake you aren't fucking Japanese yourselves, youre getting as asshurt as someone from India on an imageboard. The man who RUINED Ohranger
>>
>>15396464
That's part of what I was referring to. The problem is you people seem to think all cults = Charles Manson shit.
Greeks, Romans had cults to Egyptian deities, Persian deities, numerous local ones, etc. And yes those were dumb too.
Japan has had cults that've been around for a long time. They never had strict boring monotheism forced on them like us, so such sentiments survived in their public consciousness. So lots of new ones pop up too.
This negative reaction is the effect of media, pure ideology as that sniveling Slav lardass Zizek would put it. /m/ thinks all cults are killers and that the Japanese are all rigid Buddhists or something. Ha, complete lack of knowledge on Shinto for one thing.
>>
>>15396518
>and that the Japanese are all rigid Buddhists or something

BUDDHISM is a FOREIGN HERESY.

PRAISE THE EMPEROR REMOVE THE BARBARIANS
>>
>>15396488
Define "cult"

Christianity is a big fucking cult in my eyes
>>
>>15396557
Thanks Cohen.
>>
>>15394469
It depends. Someone who thinks he is Jesus wouldn't give much shit about it. Quite the opposite, he dreams about himself being superior and all. That's enough to get by.
>>
>>15396518
it's like when you say "UFO"
some people think you mean "an aircraft that wasn't identified" other people think you mean "the saucermen said take me to your leader"

cult in casual conversation usually means "a bunch of screwballs who think interdimensional beings are up their butt" or something similarly third-rate pulp novel
nobody gives a fuck about mystery cults of the bronze age

Pic related definitely is.

Weird cultist leader dude with arbitrary indoctrination plans.

Only difference is he sometimes goes on batshit crazy, long rants about China.
>>
>>15397510

There's something about putting the word "happy" in your group's name that just sounds inherently cultish.
>>
>>15397552
Because you have to explicitly convince other people that you are happy instead of implicitly show them you are?
>>
>>15397564

I think it's more of "trust us, we're happy. Who could mistrust a happy person?"
