***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Looking for dump of Gunpla tips images, or at least some introductions to scratch building.

At the moment edge sharpening and panel scribing would be helpful.

**MELEE GROUP BUILD**

Build/paint a robot with a loadout focused on melee combat! Anything from shields to swords to lances to axes to bare fists is fair game. There's no room for ranged weaponry here, however, so anything resembling a rifle, Rocket Launcher, cannon, pistol, or any other ranged weapon is a no-go (Small ranged weapons that are built into the kit itself like head vulcans are ok, however).

More clarification here:
>If the body part has a built-in ranged weapon (head/chest vulcans, claw beams, etc), then that's fine. If it's a separate part like the Alex's arm vulcans it's best to leave those off.
>Melee weapons with in-universe ranged capabilities (Like the Kimaris's lance or the Gyan's shield) are fair game too.
>Any scale and any brand is fair game here, you're not limited to just using Gundams this time around.

Almost done with the original entry I had in mind. I have a bunch of kits that I think I might be able to kitbash into something interesting though, so I might go with that instead if I can get a decent result.

However:

>kit A has a feature I want but has a "round" look

I really don't think I can make something with both of those parts look reasonable...

I'm looking to buy a model kit of AV-98 Ingram from Patlabor, though I'm a bit at a loss over which one to get. Does anyone have any particular recommendations? Yamato 1/24 is a tad big but seems nicely detailed, but Bandai MG 1/35 seems pretty nice too.

Also maybe gonna buy Shin or regular Getter-1 while at it.

So I've never bought an action base before, are they universal? Or is there somewhere in the instructions that recommend a base on a per kit basis?

Action base 1 is meant for 1/100s. Action base 2 is meant for 1/144s. Beyond that have fun.

I had such high hopes for this kit. And the construction is driving me mad.

The hip joints are the worst I've ever worked with and the legs topple off from any kind of movement.

Anyone have a remedy short of gluing the legs in place? Which I'm about 5 minutes away from doing anyway..

I've never had to deal with something so damn fragile..
>>
>>15390533
you can coat the ball of the joint in future floor polish to make the fit tighter, and that should probably help them stick together

It kills me that theres no ball in the joint. It takes a rod that fits loosely into a cylindrical poly socket that the leg can freely fall out of.

The difference is it comes with different stuff that I guess they figured wouldn't be popular enough to sell regularly, or maybe stuff that would be so popular they would make more off selling it limitedly. Take your pick. I don't really know. I see the price as justified because it's cheaper than painting it yourself, no matter how you look at it.

I've sent that tactic done plenty of times if you are into it. The old skits won't have the best proportions or movement, but when painted they do have a nice retro charm. It will require both cement and paint, unlike the newer models.

You don't need to bother with the old Jarja kit. The standard type Zaku III comes equipped with its beam rifle. All you need to do after is carve out spikes from the GyaGya's runners and paint it red. Easiest conversion ever!
>>
>>15391391
wait so you mean use gyagya as a base, then repaint and add jarja parts where needed to convert it? never thought of that, but if I do get a retro kit I'd kind of want to go all the way with it

They're pretty large and complicated-looking, especially if they come with a removable Dainsleif rod.
We're talking a 700 yen kit here AT LEAST going by the Option Sets and the HGBC backpack option kits.
Probability wise I'd give it 50/50 for it being made outside of a P-Bandai offering. It's something of a hard sell for a series that's over now.

>>
>>15391466
Depends on the colours.
For your picture, I'd do a lighter brown, then an off-white bone type colour.
Red over black I'd bring it through brown, terracotta, and a fluorescent red under my actual red.
Yellow over black, brown -> off-white -> yellow, but it will still be difficult to make it not look green, even with a fluorescent yellow.
White over black, bring it up through greys, don't mix warm and cold greys though.
Blue, purple, and green are all easy to bring up.

I've tried silver over black to bring it to white before, it wasn't much use.
I wouldn't use primer, it will end up being too thick and you'll quickly get build up at the edges of your mask.

This is assuming you're airbrushing, if you're hand brushing you might aswell strip the part and start over doing dark over light.

Hey guys, need some help here in regards to painting. I was thinking about buying pic related as my second HG because it has great poseability, shitton of accesories and is one of my fav. gundams. But I also noticed that it lacks quite some paint apps so I thought it would be good to start doing some handpainting to add those details.

I read the guide and decided to use acrylic for it, but the problem is, I could hardly find hobby-brands at my local art supplies shops, and even a harder time finding hobby shops. However, I did see a lot of acrylic paint for other things, such as clothes and the sort.

Question is, do I really need to get hobby-brands to paint plastic or is there some other alternative to them? Sorry if the question sounds too dumb btw
>>
>>15393311

Yes, I find that paints for plastic model kits give you the best results. Acryllics are a good choice to start with. There are a variety of good brands out there like Tamiya and Vallejo. If you can't find good hobby stores nearby, I would recommend online sites such as USA Gundam Store and Amazon.
>>
>>15393345
Should've also added that I'm not from the US, but thanks for the help anyways
>>
>>15393345
>>15393351
Adding to the reply, are Gundam Markers out of the question for such large areas?
>>
>>15393311
Alternative to hobby paint would be automotive paints or DIY paints that specifically advertise that they stick to plastics. These usually come in spray can forms.

The main issue is that plastic is one of the worst mediums for paint to adhere to. Paper, fabric, wood, etc. are porous to varying degrees so paint and dyes can easily wet and stick. Paint you find in art stores are meant for these ez-mode mediums, you will have an incredibly hard time getting them onto to plastic.
>>
I'm Panel lining the grimgerde, I figure the brown would be good for the red and yellow pits, but what about the gold of the swords? Or should I leave them be? What do you guys think?
>>
>>15393368
>Paint you find in art stores are meant for these ez-mode mediums, you will have an incredibly hard time getting them onto to plastic.
Ah yes, this was my main concern to be honest. I guess I should try to look harder for hobby shops or just order online
>>
>>15393356
>Gundam Marker
The paint is too thick and the marker tip is too hard, this means brush strokes all over. You could decant the marker paint then thin it with enamel thinner, then use a soft and wide paint brush...but you might as well buy bottled hobby paint at that point.
>>
>>15393392
Yeah, I figured that as much. Thanks for the help again.

So I'll be painting for the first time on my group build kit. I'm going to just do a basic build and paintjob of Shining Gundam since I wanted to build that kit anyway. I think I'm going to stick to the paint job from the show but give it a more metallic look. What paints would be good for this? I don't have a compressor so I'm just going to be using rattle cans. I use Tamyia to topcoat so I'm used to that.

Another thing, will I need to gloss coat after painting in order to panel line and detail? Then apply the matte topcoat? Sorry, I'm new and painting is scary to me.
>>
>>15393655
primer is recommended to have paint stick on to the paint better. metallic red and blue are obvious, but just go to a hobby store and choose the colors you think look best. i recommend having a coat of silver then clear yellow for the yellow parts instead of gold, but its up to you

gloss coating after painting helps the paint from chipping or any paint rubbing off when applying decals and panel lining. its just better for the model.
>>
>>15393727
So just prime the yellow parts with clear yellow or paint them? I was planning on painting the yellow peices gold. I thought about just hand painting them but I remembered the shoulders and leg thrusters are fairly sized prices so it may just be better to get a can for those.

>>15393655
Metallics cans are kinda tricky due to the metal flakes in the can sticking to the bottom, leaving you with a flat color with no shine to it. Just be sure to give the cans a good shakedown to be sure. Pic related was done with Tamiya Mica Red, Mica Blue, Mica Silver, and Testors Inca Gold.

As for topcoats, if you want the metallic paints to have a good shine you don't want to use a matte coat as it'll dull the colors you have. Just use a Gloss or semi-gloss coat.

>>15393739
Prime all the parts using the same primer. Then follow up the parts you want done up with yellow using a coat of silver. THEN go over those silver parts with a clear yellow coat to make it look more gold-like.
>>
>>15393748
I wanted to test metallics with a matte topcoat to see how they turn out. I saw someone matte coated an MG Hayaku Shiki and it looked sexy as fuck.
>>
>>15393772
Matte can work as well because it has a bit of reflective shine to it. Just make sure it's not a dull coat.
>>
>>15393787
Yeah when I get the rest of my paints I'm going to try some different stuff on some plastic spoons. Now what about the white parts? They don't make like a metallic white do they?

I think for the gold I'm just going to handprint. Most of the yellow peices are small enough that it should be fine.

Try the main softmap store in akihabara.

Or you could just order it off Amazon.jp. If you're just on vacation or something you can have it delivered to a convenience store near your hotel and pay COD if you don't want to worry about transaction/foreign currency fees. It's only like 350 yen for overnight delivery (or same day depending on when you place the order), and another 350 for COD.

Speaking of Amazon stories.

I live in moonland, and buy tons of gunpla on amazon.jp because it's cheaper than most retail shops anywhere near me.

One day while talking about what new kits to get with a friend of mine who also lives over here, we discovered that some seller royally fucked up all their HG listings and had listed every HG kit in their stock at 5 yen each.

5 yen. Approximately $0.05 USD. Per kit.

Obviously I went through and just added everything they had to offer to my cart, even shit I wasn't even interested in, it was something like 40 or 50 kits in the end, which would have only come to 200-250 yen total for the whole lot, about $2 in total for 40+ HG kits.

Now obviously the fact I'm not an /m/ legend and used the phrase "would have" should give you a clue how this story ends. The day after I placed this ridiculous order, the seller emailed me (and apparently numerous others) explaining about the mistaken listings and amazon canceled the transaction (if I remember right it was actually a mistake on Amazon's end and not even the seller's fault). I couldn't blame them at all and didn't push the issue, but damn would that have been a legendary score.

Tried painting something with white acrylic paint, the paint went on incredibly watery and didn't really cover up the whole area where I was painting even when I didn't thin it. Someone told me that for white paint on dark surfaces, I have to let the paint dry and then add another coat and then do it over and over again. Is that a good idea?

Mucho bettero. But I'd also recommend some black lining or paint around the eyes, or even using the foil sticker. Since there's no light piping in the head that clear orange part ends up looking dull and blends in with the red underneath, leaving the actual eyes with no definition. Black lining serves to make them stand out from the rest of the face.

General photoshop stuff. I greyscaled the model photo and then colored over each part in different colors on a different layer. I lowered the opacity to make tracing easier and to get crisp edges. Once everything was separated and colored in, I replaced the colors with a greyscale palette and lowered the opacity of the colored layer to overlay over the model photo.

Finished up my Rick Dom II template.
>>
Bought a bunch of supplies. A couple questions:
What kind of grit sandpaper do you use for removing nubs? I bought 400 and 800, I have some even finer left over. I even saw that they had 120 but I figured that would be too rough.

I also went and bought a bunch of small files since they seemed useful, but those of you who use them, do you just go nippers->file->sanding or do you still use a knife?

Also bought a soldering iron (15W), seemed to get decent results on some junk parts making some tiny blaster/beam "craters" but is there any good guide out there for doing battle damage with it?
>>
>>15400648
>What kind of grit sandpaper do you use for removing nubs?
If you use an exacto to cut off nubs you'll need less of a range of sandpaper, 800 and up should be fine to get rid of them completely. I just got some 1000 and 1500 grit but have yet to try them out to see how smooth a finish they make.

>do you just go nippers->file->sanding or do you still use a knife?
nippers->file->medium grit->high grit sandpaper
or
nippers->knife->medium grit->high grit sandpaper

Files won't stress the plastic where knives are more likely to do so.
Files can scratch unintended surfaces where knives have more control over what they touch.
In the end its preference.

>is there any good guide out there for doing battle damage with it?
Try searching on google for a few guides as there are a bunch out there and it depends on what sort of look you want to achieve in regards to battle damage.
>>
>>15400730

Guess the files will mainly be useful in spots where I feel it's hard to do a decent job with a knife.

>>15400736

if you just came here then you NEED to practice first or you'll just irreversibly ruin your robutt, try something cheap like mock or revive grandpa to learn the ropes, and honestly another 2-3 kits on top for practice
If I incorrectly read into your post and you just want to try FAGs after doing normal gunpla then disregard that
gourai is a cutie and relatively simple compared to her sisters without going full barebones like materia or innocentia, a good way to test the waters
/toy/ has a Busou Shinki and friends (i.e. FAG, megami device, general robutts) general that might be able to help better
>>
>>15400941
All of them are decent enough but

Gourai and Stiletto, being the first releases, have hands with no articulation (basically the same as HG Gundam stuff; later releases have wrist articulation)

Materia, Jinrai, and Innocentia have the lower torso fall out very often because of how it's connected.

Baselard and Hresvelgr are expensive.

Just get whatever looks the best to you, there's really not that big of a difference in the quality.

Gourai comes in three colours (regular, white, military), Stiletto in two (regular, one based on an existing plane), Materia in three (regular, white, white with tanned skin), Jinrai in two (red and black), Baselard in two (regular and Hobby Japan themed red), Hresvelgr in two (regular, pink hair and clear parts with no colour for painting).

Alternatively look into Megami Device.

Yeah I've been looking at them for a while and while i love how Innocentia looks, she is too barebones and i love the looks of Jinrai and Stiletto too but i think the more simple, grunt-ish looks of Gourai have won me over, so i think I'll pull the trigger on one of these.

>>
>>15401016
Oh, that probably won't since it's from last year..

The hands aren't THAT much of a problem though, in fact some people like the older ones more because the new ones sometimes have a tendency to fall out. They're far better at holding big weapons in any case.
