Northstar would be cute if her back wasn't so overdesigned and her limbs were simplified a bit.

The other mechs in Titanfall and 99.99% of western mecha designs can fuck off.

That's literally ever western robot in existence if you remove the war of the world tripods and androids.

"western mecha design" is similar level of bullshit like anime art style when it's all just applying standard cartoon principles from Walt Disney's movies and is done all over the fucking world except in the US because US killed its art of animation in pursue of profits.

>Japs invented the hideous greebles

Greeble was invented in Star Wars and Japanese were the first to use it in mech design after CG took over since the details were not practical for traditional animation but perfectly usable in CG.
Battletech never had any actual art and only added details a few years back.

>Japs Invented bayformers shit
No, that is on Koreans. Very western in origin.
World is not just the fucking US and Japan despite what your geography knowledge may lead you to believe.

>Japs invented Aaron Beck tryhard tacticool shit
That's not really a design. It's production concept art. You take and splice pictures and paint a bit over them.
It's not design. You don't need to attend an art school to know the difference.

Have to disagree. Even when humanoid or otherwise inspired by Japanese mecha styles, you can still tell it was made by an artist with western sensibilities (detail, faux realism). And really, western mecha don't tend to be brought up a lot unless it's the flavor of the month (like Pacific Rim or Titanfall). A dedicated thread is worthwhile.

I find the whole
>Eastern mecha designers are clearly superior to western designers since western designers just make tanks with legs, whereas Japanese designers include the human element
is just the usual /m/ made up headcannon that trolls eventually picked up and ran with since it makes for easy fights.

It's unfair, not only to the west, but to the east as well. Japan has made tons of "tanks with legs" mechs. It's also strangely paradoxical to accuse the west of only making bland boring warmachines, AND to accuse them of ripping off japanese designs. So does that mean Dougram, and Macross Destroids are bland boring warmachines?

That said, I don't deny that most western mech designs are Japanese inspired, because they are. Most true western mecha design is spaceships, power armor, or little robots. Western giant robot design really wasn't a thing, unless they were specially homaging or referencing japanese designs. Of course battletech is a 'Ripoff' of Japanese mechs. It was originally licensed versions of Macross, Dougram, and Crusher joe which most people forget. Of course Megas is a ripoff of japanese designs. It's supposed to be. Pacific Rim, Symbionic Titan, Heavy Gear, all shows or games specifically referencing Japanese inspiration. Even Big Guy was stated by Miller and Darrow to be imagined as if AMERICA did their own giant robot. (It's even set in Japan and feature NOT-ASTROBOY in the comic)

Plus I also think it's stupid to conflate them all as
>Western Mecha design
as English design mecha clearly have their own aesthetics compared to French designed mecha, Russian designed mecha, American designed mecha, etc.

I'm probably wrong on all of this though, so I'm just going to dump.

In terms of series, Western mecha has a few gems like Exo-Squad (though the creators admit it's a European theater take on Gundam), Big Guy & Rusty (Astro Boy homage with DC's S.T.R.I.P.E.), and The Bots Master (which is fun as fuck).

Not to mention sci-fi gems like Terminator 1 & 2, Short Circuit 1 & 2 (Syd Meads did the designs for Johnny 5 and would later do Turn-A Gundam's).

>Battletech copies some of the more boring and clunky mecha designs from macros and dougram
>Covers them in overdesigned crap
>Includes lots of tank turret/plane cockpit on legs along side the ruined jap designs
>The tank turret/plane cockpit on legs shit gets popular and is repeated throughout most of western mecha design for decades
>Only recently have western mecha designs moved away from that shit, only to go for Aaron Beck shit, because western mecha designers tend to be overly obsessed with realism without knowing the first thing about it

It's not paradoxical at all, they used to make greebled versions of Japanese designs, started making original GRITTY REALISMS do not steal, and the ones that aren't obsessed with faux realism are mostly heavily Japanese inspired.

Good western mecha designs that aren't clearly and heavily inspired by jap designs are few and far between.

Speaking as a proud American, I have to agree with this. A large part of our history of mecha fiction derives from Japanese interpretations. Even RoboCop was inspired by Space Sheriff Gavan.

I mean, it's not like we're lacking in innovation, but Japanese really embrace mecha. Gigantic Formula did an interesting take on how other nations would design mecha.

Being Japanese, apparently.

For example, the Catapult is a fantastic design, but /m/ will go REEEEEE regardless of the fact that it embodies a lot of the design principles they claim to like.

This board is more understandable once you realize most people here just want an imaginary power trip and that most "mecha" are actually magical superheroes with maybe some pistons or a gear pasted on.

Well they had at least a level of customization in the first that would've been great to expand upon, but no, they decided that changing loadouts was too "chaotic" for a mech game.
So now we just have a bunch of different mechs that will get balanced every other week.

I can only vaguely remember most Gundams and they all blend together, whereas I, a person not overly familiar with Battletech, can instantly identify anything that was in the videogames and a bunch of stuff from the table. That's the only western mecha franchise I know of that has a large stable of original designs (and I'm talking original, not the stuff they licensed).

Take this Crab, for example.

Crap being better than shit doesn't make it as good as steak. Very few japanese robots have perfectly smooth surfaces, so shove your strawman up your ass. Even then, relatively smooth surfaces are more realistic than your panel line pornography. All the details on this tank come from accessories added on top of the armor. The machine itself, without things like reactive armor plates and whatnot, is very smooth.

Generally speaking, machines meant to be used safely, easily, and be protected from the elements are relatively "clean" looking. This applies to many consumer goods as well.

I love this beast.
When you see an ATAT, you recognize that big motherfucker immediately, because it has a very distinct shape. It doesn't have too many pointless details. Just a couple of panels here and there. It's physically imposing because it's huge and chunky. It also says something about the Empire. It communicates to us that the empire is big and wealthy and unstoppable in its march if you attack it head on.

Unlike a lot of what followed Star Wars actually knew how to do greebles.

It adds detail to things that should be mind bending complicated with loads of different systems, like a huge space ship, but not in a way that it fucks up the silhouette. A relatively simple machine where all its functions are pretty obvious, like the AT-AT walker, is kept with a much simpler texture.
