***Graze Group Build***
Rules:
Pick any 1/144 or 1/100 kit from the Graze family (Pic Related), and paint and customize it. As far as customizing it, I'm going to place a limit on that. The limit is 50% additions to the kit.
To define 50%, look at it like this, you could take a Graze Ritter and replace the arms (including shoulders), legs, and backpack and I'd call that 50%. I'm not counting handheld bits in that. If you're unsure of something please ask in IRC, the thread, or email.
Start Date: 12/1/16
Due Date: 3/1/17
Submissions go to
[email protected]
Submission format
Please submit photos in jpg via a compressed file (zip, rar, or 7zip), please don't link images to imgur or photobucket or the like. Please also include some WIP photos of the kits being constructed/painted/etc as validation that it's your custom.
PRIZE:
$40 prize pool to spend on from Amazon (>>15024502)
Posted at the end of last thread, but third build, missile red is pretty nasty, metals are shitty on camera.
>>15181678
Damn, anon, that's one fancy OP image this time.
>>15181689
>>15181695
It really is nice.
>>15181689
>>15181696
Reminds me of the old MSIA
>>15181737
Well groupbuild folks, there's only about 3 weeks left for the contest. Hope you guys have your entries almost done. A few things
>1: Yeah, Reginlaze counts for the groupbuild. It's technically a Graze+ so it's in on the same reasoning the Grimgerde is for being a Proto-Graze
>2:Since the Grimgerde is in, should it be fair to include the Helmwige Reincar in this?
Whichever anon mentioned before that the Reginlaze was kind of flimsy/fragile was spot on. I'm kind of disappointed in it in general. The Schwalbe ended up being pretty cool and solid. Hopefully the Kai gets here sooner than later so I can make it in time for the group build submission.
>>15181756
>>15181760
The Grimgerde and Helmwige shouldn't be counted as Grazes at all. They're Valkyrie frames.
Working on detailing him now, Will add shading to him later on when I can. Think its going OK so far
>>15181764
>referencing a show he isn't old enough to watch
Gtfo Snapfag.
>>15181695
>>15181698
Wow I'm really impressed. It's my kit and I couldn't be more pleased with it's OP treatment. I think I may use it as my phone wallpaper for a bit.
Anyway. The Mk II is coming along nicely. Got next week off of work. Plan on finishing it then and hopefully starting my Char Zaku if it comes in.
>>15181769
Going okay? Nigga do you not see the seamlines and nubs?
>>15181767
The graze is literally made based on the valkyrie frame the same way the leo is made based on the tallgeese.
>>15181774
I just snapfitted him and panel lined certain main areas. Still havent sanded down nubs and need to go get more stuff tomorrow to fill in the seems
>>15181778
I was just going to call you a faggot, but looking at the model, yeah I guess the Grimgerde is pretty close to a Graze. I don't remember it looking that close in the anime, so I guess it's me who is the faggot.
So this kit has zero stowage/hardpoints for its weapons other than the beam saber handle?
Getting a new HG, one of these two.
Which one, Masurao or Susanowo?
>>15181781
Should've bought the master grade.
>>15181771
>What are reruns
>>15181838
It can carry things on the back of the waist.
>>15181846
I prefer the color scheme and swords of the Susanowo, so that's the one I got.
I've realized what my collection has been missing all this time. I lack a good old GM. I'm fond of the HGUC powered GM or the GM type C, but does anyone have any recommendations?
>>15181849
Yeah I would love to have it, but I got this free from work
Not sure where else I would ask this, how often do the Zoids HMM kits get restocked? I'm on a nostalgia trip and really want to build the classic shield liger but fuck the aftermarket prices on koto kits.
>>15181872
>>15181872
Type c, Powered, and Custom are great. I'd get one of those.
I like the Nemo too though you might not like that its knees can't quite make a 90 degree bend.
>>15181872
might not a "classic" gm, but the best one is the gm sniper ii in my opinion
finished snapping the sniper, gonna clean it and shit more when it comes time to actually paint it

Got a question regarding respirators. I read the guide and all but my local hardware store only has the 6003 cartridge for the 3m. Is this good enough? I did some googling as well but do I need to get a p100 filter for it too?
>>15182394
Forgot to mention but I'll be using tamiya sprays
>>15182402
Dude the 6003 is what you want, the p100 filters are useless. General rule is if you can smell it, the filters not working.
>>15182064
That was my first kit too! uwu
Nice cock bro
>>15182540
That is officially the gayest post I have seen that is not in /lgbt/
MG Double X or Origin Gundam? I only have enough cash for one.

I say yes, since it's an awesome kit.

Adding decals to my Turn A and also priming a Jagd Doga
>>15182705
>At least you put in a LITTLE more effort than snapfag does
Yeah, rushed it since something in the cheapo silver paint I use makes it gunk up a brush something fierce.
Thankfully the opaque colors of this acrylic seem to just be water based and wash out just fine, but I know enough that hand-painting large areas will never look good.
Any tips for scrubbing off the excess that don't require stripping and repainting the whole thing?
>>15182726
how's the build?
i am tempted to buy daban deathscythe for coating practice
Damn you, self-control.
>>15182726

Also got 3 new kits in the mail to add to my oversized backlog. MG GM Sniper II, and the Frame Arms Wyvern and Hresvelgr Alter kits.
>>15183062
At least George has a creative mind to make those lyrics and the beats. Heck, he's even bought that pink Dodge Stealth on the cover of that album.
Now I'm contemplating making a Pink GM.

Can't wait til mid-march when I can start working on my 1/100 Bael
>>15182726
Finished snapping together a Graze Ein, but can't paint anything until the weather starts clearing up. Been raining like hell this past week.

It's been a long time since I've done any kits, so I'm gonna take it slow.

Long fuel tanks are my fetish and I'm gonna scratch build some for my dom but I might get some of those for future kits.

Invest $100 into stocks
So, I got a job modelling stuff for a film until the end of February, thus my free time went down the shitter. Will try to finish the skirt until march but can't promise anything
How are the HG Gelgoogs and Zaku IIIs? They're some of my favorite suits
>>15182757
No. Try masking next time.
>>15184376
> Zaku III
I diddnt honestly think anyone liked them, but power to you
>>15184416
I think they're okay.
Personally what I want is a zaku I 2.0
>>15184376
The HGUC Gelgoog is pretty good, the Gelgoog Marines have fairly limited articulation, the shoulders are simply slotted on top of the arm peg and need quite a bit of paint for details. The Jäger is fairly decent for its age but sparse on the accesories.
>>15182099
A nice build desu. Only PG I have done and I didn't grab leds either.
>>15182099
I have that with some knock-off version of the led kit I found on sale a while back. Its sitting half done on my nightstand since I fucked up the wiring in the legs and don't want to take them apart right now. I'll eventually get back to it. Fun to build, the LEDs do make it a lot harder than I expected.
Snapped together a Build Burning today after having it sit around for a month, I think I'm settled on what kits I'm using for the rest of this project. Probably should grab a Shia Qant to use instead of the RG though.
Alright you faggots convinced me I need a GM Sniper in my life. HGUC or MG? I've been doing MGs but I've been wanting to get an HG to practice sanding. But at the same time the MG looks so damn good. If the MG were slightly cheaper I wouldn't need to even ask.

>>15183070
Welcome brother!
Recently did this, the stickers and decal stickers are only temporary until I get some paint/ waterslides arrive, so it's not done yet, gonna clean it some more when the shit arrives. Robot mode is as clunky as you'd expect for a 1.0 era kit, but I got it because it's my favourite wverider design, so that's where I'm keeping it
When doing touch up handpaint after airbrushing how many layers should be necessary? Considering the fact that the model will be flat coated afterwards which would hide subtle differences.
>>15182850
I think you should give it some bigger legs, make it sort of battletech-esque
>>15184123
I fucking love Metal Slug and I need this
I like displaying my shit with two rifles. What kits other than the Wings come with more than one rifle?
>>15185006
Ryusei Go comes with a Sub machine gun and a long rifle.

>>15185336
Type C doesn't get enough love in these threads personally. It's GM Command this and GM Sniper II That.
0083 GMs best GMs
Since I don't have the means to pick up a lupus for longer arms, I tried using barbie's old shoulder armor to beef up the forearms.
Thoughts?
Finished building Carta's Graze Ritter, and I really love how this thing looks, especially next to the Kimaris Trooper and Grimgerde. Weather has been crappy here, but once it clears up I plan on painting the gold and silver of the sword.
>>15184675
I'm a simple man, I see a request for AGEbois and I provide an AGEboi.
>>15185656
Side note: if anyone here is ever building this DO NOT separate the front skirts. Yes they're balljoints, but they're loose as fuck and just flop around once you remove that connecting bar.
>>15185663
so just drill a hole and pin half the balljoint or coat the joint in future to stiffen it, it's a pretty bog-standard issue and fix for front skirts.
Does anyone have the picture of the Full scale gundam in japan with the cigarettes next to it for scale?
>>15185656

As anon said they are Metal Slug vehicles, you can find them on ebay or hobby shops around HK or China, they are around 20$ for the kit and 6-7$ for a weapon set.
>>15184958
My thoughts exactly, I was gonna get the Wave one, but a kind anon pointed me at these kits. They are a bit smaller than the Wave one, but have a lot more detail and extras.

Is there a good place online to buy crocodile clips in bulk for holding parts in place while painting
Alternativley, is there a better way to work with paints than using the polystyrine block + sticks with crocodile clips taped to them
After a long hiatus from gunpla (mostly building Star Wars ships), I've finished my first IBO kit.
>>15186095
Get a bunch of corrugated cardboard (i.e cut up some old boxes) and tape them together to make the block. I find it holds stuff a little more securely than the polystyrene, and you're not constantly poking new holes in it.
As you can see, I use old bits of runner as the sticks. Also, my crocodile clips have little screws in them for holding the sticks in place, so I don't need any tape on those.
>>15186116
First thing I did was ditch those ugly ass black stickers. And attempt to break up some of the black with silver paint (i.e. the faceplate).

Anybody collects the Sangokuden kits? What are the best kits from that line?
Hey all. I posted this pic in the Combat Role thread, but let’s face it, I shoulda just stopped by here. Anyway, this thing took waaaaaay to long to finish up (mostly from waiting for the last kit to arrive in the damn mail) but I’m finally done! I had a base version of a Gusion/Qubeley themed as a hercules beetle, but it wasn’t quite there yet. Months later I see a good deal on a Zssa and everything clicked, fast forward a few weeks and boom. We got this bad boy and I simply HAD to share it. I am a proud gundam dad. Even if the third beam claw fell off and I can’t find the fucker. But yeah! Thanks gunpla bros for providing constant advice and inspiration! Here’s to the next project, whatever it might be!

Thanks dude. It took me a long time but it feels amazing to just look at this thing on the shelf, kick back for a second and imagine it rumbling onto the field, opening up all its compartments and just laying waste to everything on the front line so that the quicker, closer-range suits can get in and tear shit up. Ah, to see all those missiles, bullets, and beams in flight... uh... but yeah! It was worth the time, money and effort, at least in my book!

That is the length fully extended since you can retract the handle and shit, also remove the lower part of the handle/pommel and use it as a mace.

If you are just hand painting you can do it indoors with no issues.
But any kind of spraying will require you being outdoors in favorable weather or a well prepped spraying/ventilation booth to keep the fumes out.

You could do what I do and spray outside on the balcony or something, but you're going to be even more dependent on the weather.
Planning my first paintjob, going to be doing some weathering with enamel based wash and weathering powder for rust effects. Also using an enamel-based matte cote.
Not sure about the order though. Is it paint > weather > topcoat or is it paint >topcoat > weather
Thanks in advance

>>15188344
I was going to say, don't ruin your MG kit by leaving the nubs like a noob, so yeah good that you are working on it.
I was just browsing through the Vidar kit and I noticed that the ENTIRE manual and even the box has english translations in/on it. Like even the suit and pilot history is translated.
Man are we in the future? I really hope Bandai keeps this up, because it's interesting to be able to read all the extra stuff.
>>15188860
Yeah, they've been doing that since the Figurerise Dragon Ball kits iirc. It's really nice that the English is all grammatically correct English, not just Engrish. It's also especially great for MG kits down the line, because a lot of the background information and fluff included in the manuals just wasn't available in English, so that means more knowledge of the Gundam series is going to become available through this. I really hope that Bandai includes English translations with their P-Bandai kits too from now on..
>>15182687

>>15188990
Thanks. This was my first kit, so it was a learning experience. Took me a little while to figure out how to really avoid either leaving a huge piece of noticeable nub or gouge the parts.
>>15188986
And sorry about the trip. I post in a general on another board a lot and try to just keep it on there.
>>15189004
If you haven't already, check out the section on sanding in the guide and practice applying the techniques on that kit if you have the time to. I only say that because the Jesta is such a great kit, and you'll no doubt love the jump up in detail between the No Grade IBO 1/100s and a proper MG. Would be a shame to leave her with lots of noticeable nubs.
>>15188971
The best thing you can do is remove nubs per piece while you assemble. It saves time and going over it when it's finished to "remove the most noticeable ones" is not a good idea. it'll be a waste to paint it if you don't.
Just remove them per piece and make sure to get rid of every single one. So in this case disassemble and go at each piece.
You can leave a chunk of the gate when cutting the piece loose and later remove that with nippers or a knife, then use a file/sanding paper to remove the excess and use fine sanding paper to smooth out the surface.
Good luck. Also an obligatory; read the guide!
>>15189004
>>15189023
As this anon said, try to get it right on the IBO kit before going over to the MG Jesta, it's such a waste of money and a great kit to not give it the propper finish.
Also don't worry it's not hard and it just takes a little patience to get used to. Don't expect to finish kits in no time if you want to do it properly.
>>15189023
>>15189026
>>15189029
Thanks. I did a better job of shaving down and removing nubs on my Try Burning, I think, but still left some noticeable places to me. I managed to get most of them on a second passing before assembling, though.
I just got in a Barbados and a Spiegel Gundam. I'll probably do the Barbados first to get a little more practice in before the Spiegel MG.
>>15187753
Not a lot, its pretty easy. It is kind of expensive (I think I spent around 50 bucks on 3d parts?). But a fun build (still not done detailing it, so expect me to spam it when I do)
Here's a pic of a Tallgeese, a Leo with just the 3d parts and my Leo. Even with just the 3d parts it looks OK, and you can save some money if you don't buy the gun.
>>15189061
The only thing holding me back is that I don't like the tit vents on a Leo, and that looks way too far out of my wheelhouse to even attempt.
>>15187339
hey anon, guy who built that here. here's the breakdown of what went into this kit: chest and head (barring head-horn) Gusion. backpack, legs and first pair of arms: Zssa. tip of larger horn, shoulders, and second pair of arms: Qubeley. second uzi gained from a Man Rodi. Good to see another anon who loves the best beetle!
>>15189066
I'm telling you, this was my first mod. It was pretty easy, I fucked up because I was using epoxy putting at first on the chest, and I should have just used plaplate because that's going to be a smooth geometric surface.
Buy an HG and some plaplate, some putty and see what you can do. At the least you might build up some skill and confidence. And if not, you didn't spend much money.
The community here is pretty great if you have questions and there's always youtube.
Don't be a snapfag.
>>15188971
Take it outside in the sun, you'll see nubs you never knew that were there.
>>15189139
Now I'm scared to :[
I'll try to get some work done on it tonight. I've been using a buffing block, but I really need to make some sanding sticks.
If I can get everything sanded pretty flush, will the nubs still be noticeable when I paint?
>>15189117
>I fucked up because I was using epoxy putting at first on the chest, and I should have just used plaplate because that's going to be a smooth geometric surface.
eh? you can sand anything flat and into polygons.
it's far easier to work with putties if you slap on more than needed then sand and shape it down after it cures.
>>15189171
but plaplate is already geometic, and with plastic cement it's really hard to tell where one part ends and another begins.
Also, I feel like Tamiya epoxy putty is harder to sand down, the plastic around the putty was being worn down faster than the putty.
>>15189117
>Don't be a snapfag.

I'm not being a dick. I mean I just recently got into gunpla 2 years ago and hadn't bought a toy or model in like 15 years. But I've always liked to walk around toy aisles and just look at shit, I sometimes browse /toy even though I have no interest in getting any of it.

>>15189193
Sorry, to clarify, I recently started building again. I'm trying to cut my teeth on cheap kits for fun and to get the hang of techniques before I progress to anything more ambitious. (Or expensive)

Depends if you want skinny or stronk
>>15189066
>>15189117 is dead on, either way you do it, filling something in is one of the easiest things to change because you are just working one surface in the end. Whenever you have to make a putty surface even with a plastic surface it's easy because you can clearly see if there is still putty on top of the plastic or not.
Pic is a little more complex but just notice you imprecise you can be with the putty when your plan involves sanding down to match a surface, all you have to do is not have too LITTLE material, which can cause dips.

PG RX-78's pretty good already. It could use some more surface detail.
PG Zaku II is the old one that really needs an update. The old proportions are so wonky compared to the clean look of the 2.0 MG.
Do you guys pre-buid a kit completely if you know you will paint it? Or separate parts for painting from the start?
>>15190205
always pre-build because you need to have the build memorized anyway and it can show you things to look out for
>>15190205
If you don't want to pre-build you can assemble the inner frame first I'd you're working on a kit that has one. Then detail the armor. I usually don't do any detailing on the inner frame since once the kit is assembled, detailed and top coated you aren't going to see it.

I would seriously consider buying cheap eyeshadow if I were going to try this for colors. I had gray and black weathering powders, but you really will want some colors as well.
