***Graze Group Build***
Rules:
Pick any 1/144 or 1/100 kit from the Graze family (Pic Related), and paint and customize it. As far as customizing it, I'm going to place a limit on that. The limit is 50% additions to the kit.
To define 50%, look at it like this, you could take a Graze Ritter and replace the arms (including shoulders), legs, and backpack and I'd call that 50%. I'm not counting handheld bits in that. If you're unsure of something please ask in IRC, the thread, or email.

Start Date: 12/1/16
Due Date: 3/1/17
Submissions go to
[email protected]
Submission format
Please submit photos in jpg via a compressed file (zip, rar, or 7zip), please don't link images to imgur or photobucket or the like. Please also include some WIP photos of the kits being constructed/painted/etc as validation that it's your custom.

A modest amount of decals. Ideally an emblem on the chest or shoulders and a few caution decals are fine but going full Katoki and adding caution signs literally everywhere is just retarded.

I try to keep it simple as it's supposed to be a military vehicle and not a NASCAR stock car.

I like to put on at least the name, model number, and any faction symbols.

I like the detail of all the little mechanical warnings and so forth, but honestly lack the patience to actually apply them all.

I like to Katoki my shit up.

I don't know why but I really like decals that say what the MS is, even though it's not like an M1A1 tank has a giant decal or warning signs all over it, still it gives the model more character.

planes and tanks also don't have a million moving parts that can crush you and need to be seen from various places in zero G where the text would need to be bigger because of the distances

like you can see the ELC4 text here would be about the right size for a warning decal on an MS

Long story short, I got my hands on a bunch of pre-built 00/Seed 1/100 kits and this beaut popped out of the crowd. Removing the leg off the Seraphim was as easy as swapping a polycap around.

I want to do some sort of 90s Super Robot looking thing with this guy (Think Granzort or Wataru or something like that), and the slew of other suits it came with should be good for ideas. Maybe as a sort of rival suit to the Tryon I made a while back.

That's a really nice build. Love the silhouette of it way more than I thought I would. Which kind of makes me regret that I took off most of its armor to pose it all "Shirtless Samurai" slicing off Ein's arms.

Well that'd be the Gusion Rebake Full City.

Haven't gotten that one yet personally, only the regular Rebake. Which is pretty nice, and I prefer its headsculpt. The legs on the 1/100th are fucking trash though.

I wish there was a 1/100 full city. I like the 4 armed design a lot. My biggest complaint with the season 2 kits is that there don't seem to be many 1/100 kits.
That said, 1/144 kits are still fun to snap together real quick.

I still need to sand, prime, and paint my Schwalbe.

I know that it's essentially a Mk. II 2.0 with the build booster mk. II, but is it still a good kit? Amazon has it for 45 bucks and it's something that I don't really have an interest in painting.
>>
>>15191562

They've always been great to me about shipping stuff pretty fast (I do live on the east coast though) and resolving whatever customer support problems I've had, like swapping out a pre-ordered kit and combining orders. Free shipping on $100 orders is also nice if you order in bulk.
They do take a little bit to ship out new releases though, I want my GM Sniper II and Ground GM pls.

I'd get the Exia Dark Matter if i were you.

Welp, got done with my Daban SF.
Nothing much done aside from panel lining, waterslides, and painting some minor details.
Some major accidents though, broke off the hip joint connecting the right leg, fixed it with spare AB screws and jury rigged pin vise using screw driver.
The beam rifle hip connection also broke off due to tightness, fashioned a new one with some spares Bandai polycaps and hobby knife.
Pretty frustrating build but I'm content with the result.
Looks great next to my DM Destiny.

Full City's use of stickers is unforgivable, even for an HG.

Not only do you cover a black piece COMPLETELY with a white sticker because the engineers couldn't be assed to figure out how to cast the piece with the other white pieces (the white plate on the scissors. THAT PIECE IS BLACK, YOU SERIOUSLY COVER IT COMPLETELY WITH A STICKER) but there are details that SHOULD have stickers that DON'T.

It's frustrating how shitty the kit is when it was one of the better designs from the line.

Hey maybe one of you can help me out with an air brush issue. I have a cheap iwata neo that seems to work okay, but recently it started collecting paint at the end of the nozzle, eventually blocking spray. I keep it clean, but this behavior persists. One way to prevent it seems to be opening the gravity feed cap every few bursts, which prevents the spray from weakening and thus clogging the nozzle, so this seems like it's related to air pressure. What could this be, and why would opening the feeder cap temporarily fix it?
>>
>>15192588

I have the same issue whenever I use Vallejo primer since it dries relatively quick. What paint are you using?

Remove the safety nubs on the V-fin

Remove nubs.

Panel line.

Your first kit will not be perfect; it's okay, you get better the more you do this.

An Action Base is not required.

Anything that Snapfit-Kun and Airbrush-Kun says is not to be trusted.

Have fun, and don't forget, you're here forever.
>>
>>15193860
Actually, I've already got a question regarding

>Remove nubs.

I've noticed there are parts that you insert into other parts (the yellow chest fans on the RX 78). Should I bother to trim the nubs on that since they aren't visible anyway?

Why the quotes? The red, blue and grey at least looks consistent with Bandai's metallic colors. The white looks more like a pearlescent though, really throws off the whole aesthetic...

Thanks Anon!
>>
>>15193948
Because if you've seen it in person it doesn't even look remotely metallic. Even the non-whites look like cheap pearlescent, the whole thing looks like shit.
>>
>>15193939
>lighter colored paint
You mean plastic. And that's normal, it's a side effect of the injection molding process. When liquid polystyrene is injected into the mold, pressure on the tiny connections where the runner meets the part can cause the plastic to cool more compact/dense, leaving behind those dark marks.

It tends to happen worse on darker-colored plastic from what I've found, and the only way to truly get rid of them is to paint the piece.

Personally i like. Lots of small fiddly bits though so take your time. Also unsually for a MG it has stickers that are essential to complete its look.

I need a bit of panel lining advice, as I'm very new to it. I picked up some Sakura Microns in black, as well as some of the fine tip Gundam Markers. I also decided to pick up some pour type Gundam Markers out of curiosity.

Pic related is my first mostly complete panel lining using the Microns and regular Gundam markers. I feel like I did an ok job. Photo is probably shit. Used a rubber eraser to go over the lines and make sure they weren't too dark.

Continued next post, I need another image.

However, on my Barbatos Lupus kit I decided to try the pour type markers and Gundam eraser. What a fucking bitch this is. Controlling the pour is a pain in the ass, and I often end up with extremely dark lines even using cotton swabs with and without the eraser fluid to go over the lines. Half the time I fuck up and erase part of the line and erase the whole fucking thing to start over again. Are these things just shit or am I retarded?

They're definitely hard to control, which is which you need to only use them for pieces with long-ish lines that aren't too curved. Use the regular panel lining gundam markers for anything else. Use grey ones if you feel like they're too dark, too.
Also, this is just a personal thing, but you don't need to use any special kind of fluids to erase the gundam marker pour type ones. Just lick your finger or if they're sweaty already just put some elbow grease to rub the spillover off. Does a perfect job. Just wait for it to dry before you clean it up.
>>
>>15194909
So does it look okay to use both the regular markers and the pour types together? I'm wary if the contrast being way too much. I erased the entirety of one of the side wings because i was thinking it would end up looking shitty next to the pour type lines.

I used needle files in the past and it always leaves the surface of a model looking very scratched and worn. If I were to get 1000 grit sandpaper would it leave the surface all scratched up? Or would it look polished like a baby's bottom?
>>
>>15193696
Yeah waterslides would definitely be better.
>>
>>15193844
don't buy a tool kit that has all the tools in one. they all usually end up sucking.
Buy a decent pair of nippers since it is the tool you will be using the most. Tamiya has a good pair for a good price. God hands are the best but they are a bit fragile and pricey for newbies.

sanding sticks are great and pretty cheap. look for one's that say washable so they are easy to clean and you can get them wet before you sand. sanding with wet sand paper cuts down on dust.

don't sand too hard or fast because you could make unwanted indents and marks.

don't go overboard with panel lining. grey goes with white for most kits. black goes with darker colors.

top coating is a great way to make a kit look a lot nicer. using a can of a top coat works fine so you don't need an airbrush for it. avoid testors cans if you are panel lining with gundam markers because they will make the panel lines run. I personally like Mr.color spray cans for top coats.

if top coating put on a matte coat last because it makes it harder to put on decals and panel wash.

gundam markers are serviceable for panel lining but a panel wash works better. I recently tried out the panel wash marker and it's awesome.

I know some of these don't sound like beginner techniques but I'm trying to think of some mistakes I made in the past that I could help save you from.

You'd think it's just as smooth as paper but there's still a tiny amount of friction that really cleans out the surface.
Of course you'll be fine with at least 2000. The trick is to build up. Start with something really coarse like 800, then gradually move up to 2000. Won't even see the scratches.

All my tools and stuff are already here, I started building it last night and it's like halfway done.

Here's my tools:
>sprue cutters
>X-Acto knife kit with varying sizes
>Black fine point sharpie for panel lines
>Tweezers for stickers/handling small parts
>cutting mat
>adjustable work light

But all this stuff about sanding and coats, I don't have any painting stuff yet. I'm still easing in. Sounds a bit intimidating but this is a lot of fun so I'm game

Did some more work on my kimaris today.

Added more armor to the shoulders, knees, backskirt (not pictured), and the chest plate.

I let the glue dry since this morning and I'm going to go through and probably bust the plate and putty out so I can fill things up some. Going to putty up and make the top of the shoulders look like one solid piece. It'll be the hardest part but I look forward to the challenge. Still haven't decided on a color scheme though.

I'd say if you want a Unicorn in Destroy mode, pick up the full armor version if you can since you get a lot of extra weapons. It's not a hard kit to build, just annoying, as the clear parts and opened panels just make it tedious. You go through a lot of work only to find out it's just a part of 1 leg. The other problem is the front skirt doesn't have a polycap part to hold it in place, so if you decide to cut it for individual movement, it will be a little loose. Also the Destroy mode comes with no beam sabers because Banrise
>>
>>15196969

I was considering that, but since I'm fairly new to Gunpla I've been going through smaller HG kits to try and get better before trying to do something like a full armor or the Kshatriya, but honestly they're probably just more stuff to put together.

I want to learn to paint but I feel like I'm gonna want to go all the way and airbrush since I have plenty of disposable income.

It's the same on the MG Sinanju.
While the sleeve separation on the RG is impressive, the HG and MG can look better if you put in the effort and reverse wash it due to it's sharper details.
See how the sleeve lines that supposed to be separated are melded together and only textured.
Planning on doing it on my MG someday.

I haven't tried painting since my 40k days, and I wasn't very good. It's why I'm still shying away from it right now since I'm new to the hobby. I was always bad at making uniform coatings, so I'd want to do airbrushing here, but there are so many techniques.

I just made Char's Zaku II ORIGIN and I feel bad because I'm not doing the kit justice with just a snapfit build. It looks amazing but I need to learn to topcoat and paint.

I do it after I assemble it and have shaved off all nubs and seam welded the model. Then I will paint what I wanna paint (even if it is just some little detail pieces) then panel line and top coat. Good thing to know is if you don't paint it or you use gloss paint you can also usually wipe off the extra stuff that goes everywhere. Good luck! Hope I helped a little bit.

Just checked, in the guide in OP's post you can check out the google doc. It is under "Advanced Techniques" but is basically an advanced glue called plastic cement that goes between two pieces, melts the plastic into one solid piece some people do it for anime/art accuracy, others just for taste. Just know once you put them together in this way...you can't really take them apart again.
>>
So, the X-Acto set that's recommended in the Google Doc is sold at Walmart. Cheaper too.

Just for anyone interested in picking it up.
>>
>>15197727
>>15197747
You may also be talking about using a putty and sanding it down to be flush with the piece, this removes unwanted gaps or mistakes. But this does require a full repaint of the model since it will be discolored from the rest of your model.

I've kind of given up on the gun. A lot of those are in some real PITA places to reach. A lot of the ones you circled are completely flush as a result of sanding and buffing, but they're still discolored.
I plan to give it a final sanding before repainting it, though. This was my first kit, so I'm pleased with how few nubs I actually left behind.

It still looks better than when I first snapped it, though.

Nubremoval 2.jpg

>>15199046
You're the guy from the previous thread right? This is why you should remove nubs and sand piece by piece when you are building it, but I think you said you are doing that for future kits, right?

The discoloration comes from nipping them off to close to the surface, because the plastic gets warped by the cutting/nipping. It's best to leave a larger part of the gate when removing the piece and then cutting slightly away from the surface so that you leave a manageable amount of nub that you can then sand/file away.

I made some pictures of how I remove nubs, There are many ways to do it, but this works really well for me and I end up with clean pieces. First I cut away the piece leaving a large part of the gate, then I cut that away leaving a little bit behind that's easy to file. I file the nub down till it's completely gone and then use fine sanding paper to even the surface and remove the coarsness. When filing I lay the file on the nub and move the file away from me, so that I have greater control and I try not to hit the surface of the piece as much as possible. If you do this right you won't touch the surface untill the nub is gone and you can actually feel the moment when you reach flush. I then switch to sanding paper and just rub the "damaged" area down till it's all smooth. That way I have no nubs and no discolloration from warped plastic, plus the surface is smooth. When eventually painted you can't tell where the nubs were.

Concerning the ones on the rifle, don't give up! Just disassemble the gun and you should be able to reach all those points easily when it's just the individual pieces.

They're still pretty good, mostly model masters stuff, but they have other good supplies like glue and good qtips. Model masters are enamels but they are perfectly fine paints if you give them the drying time they need. The white, pink, and purple on this are all model masters paints.

If they have the testor's one coat wet look gloss in a can, that's a really good lacquer clear coat for can users; it's super strong.

Update on my panel lining. I'm using the Micron 005 that's recommended in the guide. I tried to let this dumb shit dry over night, but I went to grab the robot just now and smeared fucking ink everywhere. This panel lining shit is fucking gay

Is there anything better I can use that actually dries because this just ruined my entire experience because now I'll never be able to pose this fucker without ink getting everywhere

Making some progress on 6th form. I'm getting a hair better at removing nub marks, but some are really stubborn. I've been leaving a ton of gate when I nip everything out, then removing some of the excess with the nippers if I need to before shaving down or filing until it's flush. Then I sand it until it all blends.

Am I missing a step here, or are nubs just an Eternal struggle for everyone?

Found this old relic today while cleaning the garage. Think I built this when I was in like 4th grade, whenever toonami was showing g gundam. Anyone know of a way I could make a second gauntlet for this guy? Like somehow make a mold of the other one or something? Kinda want to clean it up now that I actually know what on earth I'm doing.

resin cast it
>>
>>15200918
How would I go about doing that? Can you point me into the direction of a tutorial on it?
>>
>>15200904
How tall is it compared to a regular hg?
>>
>>15200944
there's a whole bunch of tutorials on youtube, watch as many as you can to understand the process, variations, and what can go wrong. keep in mind that once casted, resin dust is toxic and will kill you if inhaled, so sand outside and wear a facemask

It's about an inch shorter

thanks for the heads up about the dust, might come in handy.

I'll check some out then. Looks like this is gonna turn into a fun little project

Hence the "villians" bit. Gali has been a hero from the start. But Okada hates good writing so she's gonna make him job it and die. Gali being the hero we have been wanting from the start makes it all the worse.

Also, clean up that desktop.

Are you planning on panel lining and not top coating?
>>
>>15201461
I haven't top coated it, this is my first time. Do I need to do that to keep the panel lines from rubbing off?
>>
>>15201700
Yup, otherwise it's gonna keep smearing.
>>
>>15201705
Thanks, I'll look into it

So I'm looking at the guide and it says the top coat fumes can be harmful. Should I wear a mask for this like I would for painting, or is standing back good enough? I'll be doing this outside.
