Because it's easy to make new Devil Gundams? You just go "Devil Gundam ate X and now it looks like this." Devil Axis, aside from being Axis, has little in the way of differences from Devil Neo Japan (which hasn't been in SRW come to think of it. Unless I'm forgetting something like Final...), and the Devil Mass Driver was a thing but no one cares and I didn't count it because no battle sprites.

Neo gave it a rather boring new form and used it as the only fight with the thing because Neo gives no shits, and OE reused it despite not having the thing DG absorbed (an original thing from Neo) because OE gives negative shits.

Shin also had a new form designed by the original designer... It's nothing to write home about. Looks pretty much like the Devil Gundam usually does when it's not eating large areas.

On the plus side, the second half starts strong. You get shit like this:

And then there's stuff like Dark Knight Steru fucking eating a Helldragon (well, eating its energy? I dunno how to describe it and it's been a bit so I'm not 100%) and the elf equivalent of the Humanoid Typhoon joining the cast, and the fact that Meteor Zapper has to have very precise application to work properly (it has a long windup so if the Hell Dragon is actually aiming for Adieu it's going to get slapped down) it seems pretty good... but it just fucking drags on with pointless filler and "we could condense this into a much smaller space and it would actually work" episodes. And recaps. There's four recap episodes in Ryu Knight, which is too many for a ~50 episode show in the 90s (passable for a 75 episode show in the early 80s, but by that point it's getting silly.), especially when literally all of them are pretty close to each other and go over the exact same points anyway and usually have really goddamn dumb setups.

Also those fucking ninjas. Like I wouldn't even have a problem with the episodes because they'd be decent, but these are people on foot beating a bunch of beings that regularly tank multiple Ryus. It's not SoD breaking, it's SoD SHATTERING.

The second half was a disaster. The moment they introduced Katze's brother, everything slowly went downhill. Then there's Adeu and his Zephyr power up, which feels like a total waste of time when everyone else gets their power up, since Adeu can only keep the form up for a little while (this is completely ignored by the end), and took an episode to learn how to fly (the others did that immediately).

I also hated the tiny humanoid dragons, they felt completely out of place.

Alpha Gaiden's difficulty is vastly exaggerated. Most of it is on the easy side, it just suddenly peaks a couple of times during certain bosses because they can wreck all your units as if they were made of paper. Outside of these it's smooth sailing. Grunts don't hit particularly hard nor are they hard to take down and your units have generous SP counts.

There's much nastier examples, such as D with the infernal V Gundam and Original grunts and its dumbtastic balancing, or OG2's "everything kills your units in one hit or takes most of their HP out in a single attack". Then there's much of the classic era, in particular F and F Final which are just pure concentrated bullshit.
