***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

***Graze Group Build***
Rules:
Pick any 1/144 or 1/100 kit from the Graze family (Pic Related), and paint and customize it. As far as customizing it, I'm going to place a limit on that. The limit is 50% additions to the kit.
To define 50%, look at it like this, you could take a Graze Ritter and replace the arms (including shoulders), legs, and backpack and I'd call that 50%. I'm not counting handheld bits in that. If you're unsure of something please ask in IRC, the thread, or email.

Start Date: 12/1/16
Due Date: 2/1/17
Submissions go to
[email protected]
Submission format
Please submit photos in jpg via a compressed file (zip, rar, or 7zip), please don't link images to imgur or photobucket or the like. Please also include some WIP photos of the kits being constructed/painted/etc as validation that it's your custom.

Honestly some pretty good choices out of the lot there, the only things I'd fault you for is not having a Grimgerde and getting stock Graze when you could have gotten a variant, even if you just used the stock configuration with it.
>>
>>15015251
Grimgerde was out of stock at the time, but I plan on making another order next paycheck so I can get grimgerde, Flauros and some other kits. I kind of want the graze variants as well.

I also have Graze Ein on the way from amazon, since it was also out of stock.

I've already sunk halfway through the rabbit hole, might as well go all the way.

gloss
>>
>finish painting the legs, crotch, and chest of the HG Hazel
>start working on the arms
>they require filling three separate seamlines, with the inner frame having to be painted and assembled first, then entirely masked off
>The seamlines run through multiple panel lines

Ok, time to start working on the head and backpack. Hopefully when those are finished, those arms will have magically fixed themselves.
>>
>>15015732
Work your way from the inner part to the first major seam, then work on the backpack, then the second major seam, then the head, and by then you should be just about ready to get it the fuck over with.
>>
>>15015741
I would do that, but my scriber isn't going to be here until January, so those seamlines are probably toast. And I ordered some special plastic film that is supposed to be good for masking inner frames like this, but that'll be here about when the scriber comes.

At the very least I can prime and paint the inner frame while I do the head/backpack.

Oh, by the way, does anyone know if microsol/microset mess with enamel paint? I applied a clear coat before doing my enamel panel wash, so do I need to apply another clear coat before doing decals?

Alright, fuck testors sprays. It never has any consistency and now the pain is just randomly melting off in in like 68 degree weather. Im striping this shit and just doing a snap shit build with pannel lining. Fuck this noise. Ive used tamiya before and it was way better. Are their any other similar brands in a spray?
>>
>>15015815
Was that Testors enamel paint or clear coat?

Tamiya and Mr. Color have the best spray cans from my experience. But I'll admit my experience is limited. I mainly just airbrush.

>>15015732
(Image is from the instructions for the GM Type C but they share the same joints for the arms/legs)

If you cut out the area in red you can just slide the inner arm assembly into the outer arm parts and have it snap into the area where it would have conjoined the two arm parts around it. If you can't fit it in due to the blue part, just cut it off and glue it to the inside of the outer arm, or replace it with a spare polycap.
>>
>>15015820
It was enamel. Their top coats I havent really had an issue with. But I swear to god its like, I'll use their sprays for one kit and be perfectly fine, then ill use them for the next one and itll be shit, with stuff like this random melting off bullshit. Even with a new can. They have no consistency AT ALL. The only thing that Ive use from them thats worked well 100% of the time is their flat black. The spray itself is a bit heavy like a normal can of sray paint, not that misty fine spray like tamiya. It can be worked around, but you cant work around the paint randomly melting off after drying for 2 days. Id like to use my airbrush, but i dont have a compressor.
>>
>>15015838
That's really rough. I've never been a big fan of Testors. Their products always look overpriced and uh undergood compared to other options. Is there anything preventing you from using Tamiya instead?
>>
>>15015815
Aside from the dullcote spray, I absolutely avoid Testors paints.

The chemicals they use are exceptionally strong and a lot of their formulas can easily eat through other paints.
>>
>>15015867
Well I started with testors cause that all either of my hobby stores had. They had tamiya primer cans, witch is how i found out about the brand. I just Like getting things from a store better than ordering them online, its quicker. But im done with that now, its not worth it if they are gonna fuck up this bad this consistently. I actually went and ordered some stuff from tamiya for my nazi zulu project, just cause i want it to turn out really nice. But it looks like ill ghave to do that for anything I want to paint now. Im done with this testors shit.

So I wasn't even aware of these 1/100 Gundam Seed Vs. Astray kits until I saw that they were being reissued sometime soon. I don't like Gundam Seed and I don't particularly care for many of the designs either. However I'm really digging these for some reason. The color schemes remind me of Megaman X bosses and the older MSVs with the really exotic color schemes. I even like the two Astray variations, and I think the vanilla version of that suit eats ass. The Mirage Astray 2nd Issue definitely feels Zanscare esque with all the beetle-esque features. Anybody have any of these kits? are they passable, like, at least semi-modern hguc quality? There are at least 4 that I really like so I don't want to snatch them all up in the limited window and realize I fucked my wallet for nothing.

I have a few of the 1/100s and considering that these are basically just recolors with the parts swapped around, I think I have a general idea of how they are. They are worse than modern HGs, except that they generally have more molded parts and detail. They look fine to me, but they aren't as nice as MGs and shit, and their articulation is generally pretty lacking, like maybe a 90 degree bend on the arms and the legs are a lot better but they are on ball joints so they don't go out to the side a lot. Whether or not this is worth it really depends on how spoiled with new kits you are. I think the kits are perfectly fine, but people who don't want to put minimal effort into something seem to disagree

Are Citadel paints good for Gunpla? They're water-based acrylics so they can be thinned pretty easily, and in my experience they go OK through an airbrush. My only worry is that they're not the most durable, though I suppose that's what topcoats are for.

>>
>>15017846
They're fine. Their paints have good pigmentation and they have a good range of colors.

Compared to Vallejo or Reaper, they're about the same in terms of durability. Give them 24 hours to set and they won't come up from masking tape. But if you have part-on-part movement, they're going to scratch off, no matter how much time you give it.

If you have access to Citadel paint, your probably also have access to Vallejo. I'd go with Vallejo, personally. The dropper bottle means you're going to waste less paint and get more accurate mixes. I've had bad experiences wasting or spilling paint from Tamiya and Citadel bottles.

Oh, Discord in the background, right!

BuildFightSystem is a Gundam Build Fighters-themed chat/build/tabletop battle/RP group. It's reddit-based and I helped start the RP side of things for when the battles would slow way down during rules revisions. So, #rp_board exists to keep the RP moderation out of main chat.

Just find a kit of a mobile suit you like, and buy it. Gunpla is incredibly simple, and very hard to fuck up, so you don't really need to worry about it being too hard or anything.

I would recommend that you get some nippers and a hobby knife in addition to whatever kit(s) because they'll make the end result look a good bit better while making your life easier. Something like pic related would work, but it is also a bit overpriced for the quality of the shit inside.

>>15019557
get a HG(high grade) or SD(super deformed) to practice. HG is a good place to start because they are relatively easy to build and have tons of kits. just pick one that you like and go build it. read the guide for tools and construction.
tip: newer kits are better in quality as they are more detailed and have better articulation
>>
>>15019558
If you're trying to change a hole to fit a different backpack's peg, probably filling it with Tamiya white, letting it dry, then drilling (pin vise) out the new peg's size is pretty much idiot-proof and perfectly effective. Requires paint.

An alternative is to use pairs of small neodymium magnets, one of each pair on the body and its mate on the backpack. CA superglue works fine. Can paint over the magnets if ya want to.

A third option is to saw off the offending pegs and glue in the appropriate diameter sprue peg from a spare runner.

Lots of ways to crack your egg, anon! Good luck!

So that fuck nugget didn't see any other IBO designs in action except for the original graze, schwalbe graze and barbatos and somehow has the gall to shitposter consistently about designs he's never seen in action. For someone who supposedly likes Gunpla (heavily debatable) he really doesn't seem to understand the aspect of gundam essentially being a weekly Gunpla commercial to shill new kits en masse.
>>
>>15020067
He's as much a fan of Gunpla as Barneyfag from /v/ likes My Little Pony.

Anyway, what are some kits you'd like to see? I'd like to see a MG of the Barbatos or the G-Self, or even G-Saviour.
>>
>>15020067
>shitposter consistently about designs he's never seen in action
To that same point, you don't need to watch the series to dislike the gunpla designs.
It's entirely a subjective individual aesthetic at that point.

You don't buy a Gundam because it kills all the evil bad weak mooks suits and its the strongest and doesn't afraid of anyone; you buy it because it looks nice to you.

I dislike Snapshit's autism in posting but I'll still give him a bone that IBOs MS are always failing in some form with me aesthetically.

I can forgive the high heels or tiny midget feet but they bring back the wasp waist autism again for the next Gundam iteration, I'm going to fly to Japan and nut each of their mechanical design team.
>>
>>15020082
Well an mg of barbatos would honestly be a little redundant seeing as the 1/100 series is very close to mg level engineering. Generally there are a few minor details but anything that needs touched up is always the same color as readily available gundam markers so it's easy enough just to hand paint anything niggling. I would however love if they expanded on the range and brought out option sets for the 1/100 series. It's a real ball ache having to decide whether to go for a 1/144 kit just so you can customise it or to go for 1/100 for the size and improved detail.
>>
>>15020089
While I will agree that each person's motivation for buying kits in general is entirely subjective. You can't deny that bandai's strategy has always been 'look at this fucking rad ms you bet you're ass you want to buy it!'

Without seeing a mobile suit in action it could easily be argued that you're only seeing half of the general design or missing out on an aspect which could easily change your mind on whether a design is beautiful or disgusting.
>>
>>15020082

HG woundwort

Bandai knows that the fans want it but they just won't fucking deliver.
>>
>>15020110
Eh, I can see your approach, but that logic is a double-edged sword.

I eagerly await IBO's end simply because nearly every MS design has had the same glaring factor that I hate the the point that I haven't even bought a single IBO kit despite following (albeit DLing, skimming, deleting, at the spoint) the series up until now.

Essentially they're spending a lot of money and effort to get me to slog through something to know what /m/ is talking about this season but similarly hate it to the point that I will dance the day it finally ends and we can see another Gundam reboot universe.

There are some aesthetic decisions that won't be overcome even with an entire half-hour commercial to accompany it. For Snapfag, who knows, but for the waists are unforgivable. Only the Helmwidge Linker seems to be attractive to me, and further pics are coming out that say I'll still have to cover the exposed hydraulics and waist/spine connection to the legs with pla-plate.

BanRise and their mechanical director(s) do this every season for whatever Gundam is being pushed and they make their gambles.

I will never understand the pointless hate about the exposed waists. Any other gundam show the exposed waist would not matter at all since a single direct hit from a beam rifle would destroy the mobile suit anyways.
IBO isn't a reboot, either, it's just another universe like AGE or Seed.

The design philosophy for a series really has nothing to do with bandais strategy of marketing their designs with an anime airing at the same time. Whether a design looks bad in your opinion in a static image or on screen MAY not change and of course if you fervently hate a common design tool then that opinion may never change. That said bandai would of course bank on people sitting on the fence as to whether a design looks good or not until they see it in action. As a prime example with gundam vidar, I had no idea that it's pistols had muzzle breaks and that little extra touch has definitely made me reconsider buying it. If not for the anime I likely would never have noticed that and potentially overlooked the whole design. In another case, plenty of people who do not religiously scour pictures from hobby shows likely never noticed the sliding sheaths for its rappers and when vidar debuted their was definitely a lot of praise thrown its way for how good that looked. In both of these cases I and others may have disregarded the design had we not seen it in motion.
>>

Pale Rider Todesritter would be neat

Sentinel and Advance of Zeta is essentially impossible because of licensing so can't really say anything from there :(

BARZAM WHY

Maybe the RX-78-4,5,6,7 series, I kinda like them.

I have some pics of other stuff on my PC but there is a lot I wish got some attention.

Funnels will also sag, and can even weigh down the kit on the stand so the whole thing sags a bit to the funnel side.

Jeez, is there any need to get so upset because a person appreciates that a mechanical designer put thought into a weapon design and an animator put an equal amount of effort into showing it working in a realistic manner. From the sounds of it if you had your way every weapon in gundam would be an undetailed slab of steel.
>>
>>15020279

>>
>>15020493

You 'aving a giggle m8?
>>
>>15020521
It's a physical handgun which uses a muzzle break to distribute heat and force to reduce recoil. What isn't realistic about that?
>>

Oh I don't know, the giant robot using it?
>>
>>15020493
>every weapon in gundam would be an undetailed slab of steel.
Not him but honestly I hate it when beam sabers are just literally that, an undetailed cylinder or box that projects a beam. The best beam sabers are ones that stand out with detail, like Nu's, the GX/DX's, and Epyon's.

Even Turn A's super thin laser-like beam saber was pretty damn cool, and a hell of a lot better than the generic oversized lightsaber that everyone else has.

Finished the Geirail itself. I'll tackle the weapons/back unit tomorrow. First time trying this style of shading, and the first time I'm doing something fully handpainted, really digging out how the Dark Red/Grey ended up. Was a fun exercise but I'd probably go back to doing just solid colors + panel lining once it gets warm enough to fully spray a kit again.

So what if a giant robot uses it? Gundam has used real world weapon models on a plethora of occasions from the mosin nagant to the stg44. At least on this occasion the IBO designers took the time to create a detailed weapon without just stealing an existing design wholesale.

They're pea shooters compared to everything else in the series. In what sense do they need a muzzle break? Much less one for a guant robot that should be MORE THAM CAPABLE of firing and adjusting for recoil. So no, you're fucking idiots for defending muzzle breaks on small pistols when the giant rifles don't have them and more so for only wanting to buy a kit after seeing it has muzzle breaks.

Hi nu and gundam age 2 both had an interesting take on the generic beam sabers design by having a smaller beam dagger on the other side of the beam sabers. Also while seed and its offspring can be criticised for any number of reasons, the anti ship sword designs are some of my favourite melee weapons in the franchise. It just makes a bit more sense having 2 beam emitters linked together than the minority force field bullshit which just seems like a throwaway detail to explain why gundams have lightsabers. Not to mention if you ran out of power the anti ship sword itself could be used to stab through an enemy mobile suit and considering power limitations is a key focus of seed their design seems a lot more thought out than regular beam sabers.

Gusion Rebake s marksman rifle as well as the Grazes rifle also have muzzle brakes. Not to mention that if you even have to suggest that using on board targeting computers to COMPENSATE for something that can be reduced manually you are clearly an idiot.
>should we machine holes in the side of our rifles
>fuck it lets overcomplicated the R&D time of our targeting system and cause our mobile suit rifles barrels to melt under sustained fire because some fucking imbecile thinks we shouldn't have muzzle breaks.
>>
>>15020606
>the anti ship sword designs are some of my favourite melee weapons in the franchise.
I fucking love the anti-ship swords. They look like No More Heroes beam katanas and like you said, make a hell of a lot more sense than the I-field tapering off or forming weird-shaped weapons.
>>
>>15020625
The Graze rifle hardly has what I would call a muzzle break. And again, all you're doing is defending how shitty of a kit and how not detailed it is if a muzzle break on a pistol gets you hard. You're fucked mate.
>>
>>15020648
>rifle has slots along its muzzle which could only be used to dissipate heat.

Either you're just being contrary an now or you are legitimately fucking dense. And yeah, I consider the weapons on a mobile suit the most important aspect, as they should be.

Show me the 1/144 Graze rifle that has a muzzle brake. And you tell me that piece of plastic on the 1/100 is a fucking muzzle brake compared to what actual muzzle brakes look like. For someone who is all about "mah details" you seem to overlook something so obvious.
