Just speculating from the various stylistic choices: the amount of detail, the more animal mechs, how the suits are more armor-like, assymetric and have little differences, the team starting with an Orange, a Gold and a Silver right off the bat. It feels like it points out to things not being that friendly. No, Go-Bus "failed" because they were banking on on Gokai's Ranger Keys success, and so they had no trinkets and not much to market. They had to add another mech and superforms for the main three Busters because they had that few things to sell, but at the rate things are going Kyu is probably going to end with most mechs since Gaoranger.

They're probably going to make something different to gather attention, not to have a good show for its own sake like it Go-Bus. One is flashy gritty while they other was serious gritty.

Gekiranger gave us back Ichiro Nagai and Kenji Ohba, Go-Busters gave us back Hiroya Matsumoto.

Compare them to Zyuohger which has very simple designs or Go-Busters which is something more tacticool. The mechs especially are the most "mechanical" looking animals since... Hurricaneger? They have wheels, you can see the stuff between articulations, they aren't solid colors but have black and grey in them. The robot looks almost like an actual robot and not some animals stuck together--compare Gaoranger with its sleeker designs. The suits, as noted, are also very different.

Dunno if gritty is the proper adjective but it was the first thing that came to mind.

Hi, possibly long, spergy thoughts on make my monster grow type generals in Sentai (probably inspired by Naria)

What are your favorite methods to enlarge monsters in Sentai? I've watched most of what Overtime's subbed of Timeranger and while arguably the peel off the sticker thing the monsters do to grow big can be called laziness (a big criticism that can be leveled at on the ground finishers is that it comes across as hollow and pointless since it's the signal to make the monster grow instead of ACTUALLY killing off the MoTW, but that's sentai for you) but I really liked the sci-fi technobabble about how the freezing process for the monsters is causing the enlargement phenomenon. Besides Gingaman which I haven't seen in full, Kobayashi sentai shows tend to be lazy with regards to "how" the monster grows, ranging from stuff I really like (Timeranger) to eh (Shinkenger's "second life lol") to downright lazy (ToQger's lol we don't know maybe darkness???) and I assume it's out of a desire not to write a character who is there simply to serve as the guy that makes the monster grow, especially if there are no plans to make them an integral part of the story.

Personally, I loved Timeranger's method but most of the time an in-built way for the monster to make himself grow kind of limits the story for me since the mech fight that follows feels tacked on, although let's be real that's true for most sentai shows at this point. I also have a fondness for villains like Liveman's Gash, who is physically imposing and can kick the Liveman team's ass, which helps avoid the perennial question of WHY the team doesn't just kick away Luckyuro/Naria/Bibidevi/what have you. I kind of hate those kinds of villains, basically, unless they manage to make them imposing or plot-critical.

So how do you like making monsters grow, /ssg/?

Out of most I've seen, I like Shinkenger's method the most. Where the monsters grow large when defeated just because it's what demons do. Also shit like Timeranger's monster growing where the growing is a side effect of the original cryofreeze process.

Sure, that would take away the stakes of the giant monster stomping around a city causing untold property damage, but if the main villain wanted that he would've sent a giant monster from the start.

It could also be tied to how the villain base is in an unreachable place, and maybe the alternate realm is like Gobus' Hyperspace and the mechs can't stay there for too long until the final mech upgrade or something

Deka and Shinken. Deka for having them as either auxiliary or main foe. Shinken is also good since its basically vengeance in large form. Finished Deka 35. SWAT mode is one of the best add-ons for a suit i encounter. They are well put as a powered up look. Shinken is ok but the long white sleeve only really works out for Red.

My fave method is Jetman's Dimensional Bugs. Want to have a quick enlargement? Just stick one of those on and presto, instant giant. At least one even got killed to prevent such a situation.

Overall, I think Soda's first few enlargers were pretty good about this (aside Okelampa, but he's amusing anyways). Plus, >>14994048 >>14994266 clearly didn't deserve that job.

Huh. I think something that bugged me about my first watch was how the overall strategy for the rest of the show wasn't "kill Shinken Red" when they find out about the sealing character but they actually explain it.

Shinkenger's first 12 episodes are probably some of the strongest openings i've seen in a Sentai yet. Up there with the early Go-Busters episodes or stuff like Liveman
