***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

***Graze Group Build***
Rules:
Pick any 1/144 or 1/100 kit from the Graze family (Pic Related), and paint and customize it. As far as customizing it, I'm going to place a limit on that. The limit is 50% additions to the kit.
To define 50%, look at it like this, you could take a Graze Ritter and replace the arms (including shoulders), legs, and backpack and I'd call that 50%. I'm not counting handheld bits in that. If you're unsure of something please ask in IRC, the thread, or email.

Start Date: 12/1/16
Due Date: 2/1/17
Submissions go to
[email protected]
Submission format
Please submit photos in jpg via a compressed file (zip, rar, or 7zip), please don't link images to imgur or photobucket or the like. Please also include some WIP photos of the kits being constructed/painted/etc as validation that it's your custom.

Waterslides or dry transfers?
>>
>>14984576
Waterslides, in my opinion. They're easier to apply.

I heard dry transfers have less visible borders, so they look more natural and realistic but they're harder to apply.
>>
So, just out of curiosity, how many guys are doing something/planning to do something for the groupbuild?

What are your ideas?
I've only seen three anons working on something so far, I hope we have a good turnout.

Not that many people posted in-progress shots during the last groupbuild. The only ones I remember doing it were the G-Bouncer, Refined Gundam, Extreme Gundam, and Astaroth. We're only two days in, so we'll probably have more people down the pipeline once the holidays hit.
>>
>>14984573
>>14984591
Kind of want to compete, but I only own a grimgerde and I'll have to think of how to customize it now.
>>
>>14984603
We're only two days in? I didn't realize, it felt longer than that. It's understandable then.
I do wish people posted WIP shots though, it's really interesting to see people's gunpla slowly change and grow with each shot.
>>

>Build gets picked for thread picture
>First build, worst build
My shame lives on
>>
>>14984606
Go for it! You've still got plenty of time. Grimgerde is such a great design, it's easy to make it look good since it already does look good.
>>
>>14984591
Designated marksman graze.
>>
>>14984611
Your shame is on the internet now. It will outlive you.
>>
>>14984614
Hmm It does sound tempting. I haven't customised any of my builds so far, I wouldn't even know where to start.

Guess I'll have to figure out a theme and then see if I can get parts that fit? Any tips for a beginner cutomiser?
>>
>>14984622
Pick something you like and base it on that. Do crossovers like that one Nuka Graze anon.
>>
>>14984622
I feel you anon, it's also my first time customizing a kit, I was a little anxious at first but then realized kit bashing stuff is actually REALLY fun. Once you get the ball rolling, it gets a lot easier from there.

Think of a kit or an idea you've always liked or wanted, and try building up ideas from there maybe. That's how I did it.

To me, it also helped to stick with a simple theme and let it evolve on its own. You'll get more and more ideas as you work on your kit.
>>
>>14984618
It's not even that bad. Sure, I could pick out a lot of flaws at a closer look, but it made me think "Stormtrooper" when I saw it and I guess that's what you were aiming for.
>>
>>14984611
Looks good, anon. Sure it's not perfect, but it's definitely not bad either.
>>
>>14984591
Asura Graze.

My original plan of joining all three heads together seems a bit too ambitious, so I'll do something else instead. I'm going to stick six arms on it, though.

The pilot looks really strange, like some sort of golem robot. I might either mirror or flat coat the inside of the visor to sort of hide it, because I think it takes away from the cartoony look.

The product pics do have a really impressive painted shot of it. I know this pic is shit because it's an old dalong scan, but the figure is painted with a full white base pilot suit on a featureless smooth figure, meaning they fully masked it. It's like the size of a 1/100 pilot.
>>
Why is the late UC completely ignored in the gunpla scene?
>>
>>14984707

Small and unpopular, and many designs require paint apps or more complex construction

just financially not worth it, at least yet
>>
>>14984671
Yeah. You could even change nothing and just give it a paint job.

The at least 50% rule was made so someone can't build something that's totally not a Graze, then just slap a Graze head on it and call it a Graze
>>
>>14984716
Hmm, guess I'll try to be brave and try customising it, but if not I might atleast submit the repainted grimgerde I'm going to build.
>>
>>14984723
Be brave, anon! The first step is always the scariest because it's a new experience and people are afraid of what they're not used to.
But I guarantee you that it'll be tons of fun and definitely worth it!

Vallejo matte varnish, its gone a bit wierd in places, probably from being in the shed for a few years.
>>14984809
Danke, I was worried about the dark blue being wrong, it looked greenish before I topcoated it.
>>
>>14984815
This might be a stupid question but, when you're spraying the varnish with your airbrush, how much air pressure do you use? I think that's what it's called I don't know, like when you're pressing down on the trigger and pressing it lightly makes the stuff come out a little bit and pressing it all the way down makes it come out a lot.
>>
>>14984846
For the vallejo varnish, I spray at 15-20psi and pull the trigger back only about a quarter using a 0.2mm nozzle and needle. gives a nice coverage without flooding the parts
>>
>>14984591
The idea of a group build is fun. But im not doing this one cause I hate the graze. I was going to enter the last one, but between work and life, I didn't get mine done in time.

They ARE both based on the Odaiba statue. Besides, I'd be doing a disservice to the RX-78-2 if it was 1/144 scale.

I suggest the 3.0 if you like detail and realistic proportions, Origin if you like more display options and anime proportions.

Also, just how shit are acrylic paints compared to lacquer? As a beginner to painting, would it just be easier to use acrylic over lacquer?

I will of course pick up topcoat as well.

I have the G22 and that regulator, but not that compressor since mine came with that weird mini one that the regulator does nothing for. Don't mix paints in the G22's cup, but otherwise it seems pretty solid for a knockoff.
>>
>>14985156
Get good
All old kits are like that
>>
>>14985142
Those airbrush kits are generally fine as long as the compressor comes with a pressure regulator and the airbrush is double action (button press releases air, pull back releases paint) and gravity fed (cup on top). I had a setup like that up until last month. Basically the problem is that the compressor will get hot after an hour of spraying because it's turning on and off constantly. A compressor with an air tank doesn't get hot as easily. Hot compressor = less consistent airflow and potential for splatter. The airbrush typically has zero frills, but will work pretty well for Gunpla. Most require slightly more PSI to spray paint, which means you'll REALLY need to be thinning your paints, or else the paint will dry in midair and look dusty/orange peel-y.

I recommend Vallejo Air (either model air or game air) for paints. Refer to their site for color guides. They are good acrylics, they're easy to find on eBay or at hobby stores, and they are compatible with a variety of paint thinners/flow aids/retarders. Just make sure to give them a day to dry before masking or the tape will rip up the paint.

I was surprised to find out the hard way guys, but Future finish:

1. Contains ammonia
2. Actually yellows out

I looked at a big batch of them on a shelf in a hardware store and I managed to see the difference between individual bottles. Some were clearer and more blue, the others were more visibly yellow. You can check it out by holding a bottle up against the light.

I also wish they had Astaroth Origin in stock when I ordered it.. Oh well, I'll probably try getting it from AmiAmi in January and get cheaper shipping.

Depends on what you're trying to do with the pla plates. Added details on top of a Graze part doesn't count though.
Here is groupbuild guy's explanation a few threads ago, tell me if it answers your question:

Adding bits and pieces to the already existing Graze frame/armor doesn't count towards the 50%. It only really counts if you replace whole limbs or the torso.

>>14973331 is perfectly fine for example, since it still has the Graze aesthetic from a small distance. Since you swapped out the lower legs and the shoulders, that'd be like 30% going off of pic related. Things like the torso/skirt mods wouldn't count since you're working off of the base Graze kit.
>>
>>14986466
That answers my question completely.
Thank you very much for the info anon.
>>
>>14986250
I'm just using hot tap water and dish soap and changing the water when it gets too dirty. Probably gonna have to wipe the needle and cup down with thinner afterwards though, then spray some through to finish it off.

But otherwise this has worked out pretty well.
>>
So what sadistic fuck came up with the idea for water-apply decals? Seriously, just give me fucking stickers. At least those I can hope to put on without a 7 step process where the decal invariable rips and looks terrible.

Its gotten to the point where I am only keeping the decal page now so I know what to PAINT in their place so I get something that doesn't look fucking awful. Thank god I have model paint already. That, and 90% of the decals for this kit are to just make that part of the mech white.

Which makes you wonder WHY THE FUCK DIDN'T THEY JUST USE WHITE PLASTIC FOR THOSE PARTS ANYWAY?

The only real issue it has is that it has no joints and parts like the arms and legs are one whole piece, so you'd have to cut it apart and mod it to be able to take polycaps in order to have something more than just a good looking statue.

Been looking up a few nazi decals. Wip of it foe the robit. I would really like to fit the armband in somehow, but it just throws EVERYTHING off, no matter what the shceme it seemes.
>>
>>14986797

>armband

The Geara Zulu is a sleeves suit right? Why wouldn't you use that reverse wash technique to make a stylised SS type gauntlet? Maybe on both?
>>
>>14986716
Cut decal out from sheet, hold with tweezers to submerge in room temperature water for about 15 seconds or until you can start VERY CAREFULLY easing the decal off the paper, it might not move at first, don't force it.
Before applying a decal to the piece, wet the area the decal is to be applied to with a wet cotton swab, move the piece of paper next to it and carefully slide it onto the piece, after it's on use the wet cotton swab to very carefully make any adjustments to it's position, after a while lightly touch it with the dry side of the cotton swab to dry a bit of excess water, maybe go through drying and wetting a few times.
After the decal is dry the very first thing you should do is top coat it with something, you don't need to top coat the whole kit or even piece just secure the decal so you don't damage it later, the top coat is also great for hiding the outline of the decal.

If you do these things and still fuck it up either you were too rough with it and it's your own fault or the decals are of spectacularly shit quality and you should go get decent ones.
>>
>>14986797

so fuckin dumb lol

seriously you can't be 18 years old
>>
>>14986821
what, the decals or the idea? ww2 style giant robots are cool. Alternate history can be fun.
>>
>>14986797
I still like the original idea of the armband being represented by painting the wrists red, if you do it on the upper arm you could use pla-plate or even just tape to make an actual band around the arm.
>>
>>14986716
Not sure what's hard about waterslides. You soak it until it defuses from the backing, apply setter on the plastic, slide the decal onto the spot where you painted the setter, then brush the decal on with a soft tool like a cotton swab. Then once you get excess water/liquid out with the swab you paint over it with the softer, which will melt the decal into place. Then you top coat.

If your decal split in the water then maybe it was precut to be applied in halves over a panel line.

>>
>>14986852
Not with the swastika, looks out of place on the wrists, I was thinking for a more subtle color scheme.
Try drawing lines around the arm to look like an actual band added on top of the normal arm.
For working the SS lighting bolts into the design you could sand the bits off the collar, then make little black and white SS patches to replace them by cutting them out of a piece of scotch tape with an exacto knife.
arm band could also be made from tape.
I like the thing on the other shoulder though, that seems like a perfect place to put it.
>>
>>14986867

Its not finished yet (You have to decal some pieces mid-construction before you continue building) but I'm happy with it so far, aside from the bullshit decals.

>>14986819

Well, apparently my problem is that the online tutorial I found said to wet the decal for NO MORE THAN 5 seconds, because anything longer and the glue would probably dissolve.

So yeah, that would probably be the source of my woes. I'll give it another true tomorrow, unfortunately the decals already attempted are already ruined beyond any hope of repair.

That said, I won the Hyaku Shiki 2.0 off him and none of the nubs are really that bad (think a bit better than snapshit) for something that was quickly thrown together for review.

If you help him build one it'll be fine, he'll most definately break the beam sabers eventually though.

I helped my nephew of the same age build a 1/35 tank a few months back, he could snap fit it fine with occasional help, I did most of the painting for him though.

Go with HGUC revives, they're cheap, sturdy, and fun to pose.

Ha ha, NOPE.

Decal split nearly in half during peeling, which allowed the bottom half to immediately twist around itself. For shits and giggles I tried applying the half that wasn't ruined and even after drying it out it fell right off the plastic the moment I moved the model.

Fuck these things.

The Geirail's a nifty kit. The feet feel a bit weird at first, but that might be due to how much stuff I put on the shoulders.

I wanted to do an artillery variant with this, so I'm using the rifle and cannons from that IBO weapon set and some parts from the Ballden Arms to armor it up. Beefing up the legs was the most important part, since the Geirail's regular legs are pretty skinny as they are.

Not sure if I want to leave the back lifter unit attached to the lower waist it's supposed to in the kit regularly or turn it into a backpack like it is here.

The only way I can think of adding something like tank treads would be putting them on the back, and they wouldn't really serve a purpose other than adding bulk.

Huh, I just built that kit, and the Origin version of it as well, here this last Thursday. I think I might need to fuse the waist thrusters with liquid cement on mine. It seems like they keep trying to come apart by just a little bit. As for the Astaroth Origin, the only part I didn't like about it was the grey stickers that go on the lower halves of the arm armor. It was a pain getting it to wrap around right.

Also, yes, you should at the very least panel line it.

So I decided to crack open the Marine Type to see what it's like on the inside and decided to examine the runners. Pile on the left is all-new molding, pile on the right is what's used from the Gundam Local Type.

Makes you wonder with all this effort thrown in why they decided to make this a P-Bandai kit when most people would've probably bought this over the Local Type.

just ditch the red armbands already. They look stupid.
It's a nazi war machine, not a nazi soldier.
You should try an afrika-corps color scheme like pic related.
Any spot where they put a zeon symbol is a good spot for a swastika
>>
>>14990168
Not that anon but it would make sense if it was colored like a suit. It IS a mobile suit, after all.

Anon wants to make a nazi suit, a Poland invading, jew gassing, slav burning, propaganda spewing nazi mecha.

Why recommend he paint it after the afrika korps, the one part of the Wehrmacht famous for not being filled with complete monsters?
Let the child make his SS zulu.

Oh yeah, forgot about those things.
I wish bandai would have done perfect grades in 1/72 scale, so I could display them looking cool next to all sorts of aircraft and tanks in the same scale, but we only get the terrible looking old models or ridiculously expensive resin kits.

The raws should be up on nyaa soon, or you could wait for the subs. I often forget sometimes that it's actually airing as well

doesn't it simulcast to Daisuki and Gundam.info?

aw, I was enjoying the physical weapons only.
Did they hint/exposition that it's not currently possible to miniaturize though?
