***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

***Graze Group Build***
Rules:
Pick any 1/144 or 1/100 kit from the Graze family (Pic Related), and paint and customize it. As far as customizing it, I'm going to place a limit on that. The limit is 50% additions to the kit.
To define 50%, look at it like this, you could take a Graze Ritter and replace the arms (including shoulders), legs, and backpack and I'd call that 50%. I'm not counting handheld bits in that. If you're unsure of something please ask in IRC, the thread, or email.

Submission format
Please submit photos in jpg via a compressed file (zip, rar, or 7zip), please don't link images to imgur or photobucket or the like. Please also include some WIP photos of the kits being constructed/painted/etc as validation that it's your custom.

I haven't ever gotten any Kotobukiya kits and I was thinking about getting one or two but I'm unsure of their complexity and build quality.

The first one I was thinking about was the Formula Skell unit from Xenoblade Chronicles X. I wish they had some of the other heavier Skells like the Amdusias, Mastema or Inferno but it seems the Formula is the only one.

https://www.amazon.com/Xenoblade-Chronicles-Formula-Plastic-Model/dp/B01CV0E0X4

The second kit I was looking at was the Sahelanthropus from Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

https://www.amazon.com/METAL-GEAR-SOLID-PHANTOM-SAHELANTHROPUS/dp/B015X6WYU4

From the description of the Skell kit, it seems to be about midway between HG and MG in size once completed and it's at 1/48 scale.

The Sahelanthropus' description describes it as being at 1/100 scale so I assume it's similar to an MG in scale.

Another thing is that both kits have a transformation gimmick and I was wondering if that would lead to problems like parts breaking in the future.

I asked this in the last thread but got no reply.
For my winter break what should I get and why?
1. Sinanju stein ver ka
2.nu gundam ver ka
3. Mg hyaku Shiki 2.0
4. Pg zeta (or what is a really good pg I just went with zeta because I like zeta gundam but I'm afraid it may be outdated)
>>
>>14978942
The PG Zeta is a good kit, all of them are. Personally, I would go with the Nu, its my favourite MG.
>>
>>14978942
PG Zeta suffers from the transformation gimmick, if you want a solid PG grab either of the Mk. IIs or the Strike+Skygrasper

I was sweating bullets worried they forgot my order. Can't wait to never build this thing due to lack of courage to not fuck up on a kit that would take 100 dollars minimum to replace.

There is no mod who regularly checks on this board like some of the bigger boards have. Thats why shitposting and spam are so rampant here. And the janitor can't always be on and in every thread at once.

Shit, I don't have my finished Skell with me but I finished it recently. I wouldn't pay $80 for it on Amazon, and as for the scale comparison, you are correct. Smaller than most MGs and taller than most HGs. Some of the armor pieces are undergated and the design leaves little to no seam lines. My main complaints would have to be the general plastic that is used and that the kit doesn't stand that well alone. There is an included stand, but the area where it pegs into isn't part of one piece, but rather two pieces that sandwich the legs onto the waist. I fucking despise this design as when you put the stand in it doesn't hold very well and if you move it around the waist explodes, so I'd highly recommend gluing it. I have to admit, I didn't transform the kit however as I don't care for the vehicle mode. It does look good OOB however, and includes a good amount of accessories to use. Since parts on the chest and waist like the pop off, I'd highly suggest that you use rubber cement on parts before you even think of transforming the kit, if you plan on getting it. With Kotobukiya my experiences have always been hit or miss. Also, a lot of paint applications are needed to make it color accurate, but if you want to do custom colors that shouldn't be an issue
>>
>>14978942
The MG Hyaku Shiki 2.0 will probably give you the most for your money out of all of those, and the Strike Gundam PG is pretty good. If you just want a larger kit, then perhaps consider the 1/48 kits?
>>
>>14979131
Well, at least I have some Tamiya Extra Thin Cement about gluing/fusing parts together if it coming apart becomes a problem.

I wish I had known about that stuff a few years ago when I had an older Gelgoog Jager kit that I had bought about 10+ years ago at a Hobby Lobby had the insert tabs for the propellant tanks come out. I wound up using Gorilla Glue to get them to stay in.

Also, where would you recommend I purchase it from? Is it being sold elsewhere for a lower price?
>>
>>14979142
I don't necessarily want a bigger kit I want something complex I can put a lot of work into.
>>14978978
Is there a zeta that doesn't transform? I build the rg and the transformation gimmick was annoying

>>
>>14979206
Well it'd definitely be cheaper to import it, but it would take longer to get to you
http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?scode=TOY-RBT-4056
Kotobukiya also has a United States store, but I checked and it's the same price as Amazon. So basically you can either pay slightly more to get it to you faster or pay slightly less and get it to you slower. I got mine when it first released and was forced to pay $100 in EMS shipping so I can't exactly say how much it would cost for importing just this kit.
>>
>>14979259
Hmm, I've never used amiami before. I just looked up the currency conversion rate and $50.10 seems like a pretty good price. How much am I looking at in shipping though? Should I be prepared to bend over?
>>
>>14979295
it depends on how fast you want it. SAL usually takes around two weeks but usually costs like 10$-20$ and EMS will get it to you in like a week, for me it's usually like 4 days, and that would be like $20-$30. So it varies, but since it's only one item it might not be that bad.
>>

Hazel Legs.jpg

Just finished my second Hazel leg. It was a lot like the first, but it felt like it went quicker because I kind of knew what I was doing. Didn't have to strip any parts or do any major touchups.

I'm really liking approaching this model as like 6 smaller models instead of doing it all at the same time. It's not as paint or time efficient, probably, but it's producing consistent results, which is what I want.

Also, can anyone familiar with airbrushes tell me what the front prongs on the Badger Velocity are for? They make it more difficult to wipe away tip buildup or clean the front compared to a traditional cup cover. Its an otherwise great airbrush, way better than my previous generic came-with-a-compressor one.

Are there any major differences between the HWS add-ons for the Nu and Hi-Nu? I'm trying to decide between the two and while I like the aesthetics of the Nu more, I'm concerned that the design of the kit means that it can't attach the large shield unit to its back.

first attempt at nazi bot, and it came out like shit. Looked up SS officers and their uniforms are mostly balack with silver trim. Maybe I should go with more of a dark grey for the main body parts? and keep the inner chest/waist place? The wrists remind me of the arm bands. IDK how I would do it, but I think it would be cool as fuck if I could somehow replace that bit of trim in the middle og the upper chest with the nazi eagle with the reeth. OOO, I could do the upperbody in a tan, but then it would look like an officer not part of the SS. Hmmm, I fucking hate blank slates.

I still can't believe that Hush's character has been so strangely derailed. He started out as an almost-Shin- kinda angry and vengeful, but inexperienced and without any skill. I'm certainly no expert but I suggest cleaning your brush again, or checking it to make sure it's totally fine.

I've had similar problems when spray painting and it was due to dried paint clogging and messing with the brush. Even if you think you totally cleaned it, clean it some more. I thought I had it completely cleaned out until that happened to me.

dont do 1:1 translation of colors, just colorscheme.
for lineart, use very dark grey or else all details will be lost. red is way too vibrant with black, so either darken it or use it only on the round shoulder. i recommend make it mostly a combination of dark grey and grey thats almost black, with white and red trimmings

They have about the same detail level of an MG but at the size of an HG and they generally cost $30 at the most, unless you're getting a P-Bandai variant. I've built 4 of them: Exia, 00 Raiser, 00 Quan[T], and Astray Red Frame. For me, the hardest part is getting all the decals, especially the tiny ones, put on in the right place.

A few, like one or two that I know of, have been a little fragile like the RG Sinanju with its waist joint. Also, with my Astray Red Frame, for some reason, it keeps coming apart at the hip/waist joint. I don't know if that's something that can be fixed with liquid cement or if I'll just have to be careful handling it.

Those hands are better. Posable hands are a meme. The fingers on most kits are restricted to the hooked fingers because of fragility and they almost always have shit detail.

Sculpted hands come in different sets so you get a bunch of finger motions and they have excellent details since not all of them are meant to be holding a gun (i.e. Bandai knows poseable hands are going to have half their shit hidden almost always)

Anyways the beauty of Soviet camos is that they are stupidly simple. you can easily tell these people where in quite a pinch since all of their paintjobs are really hastily applied, almost crudely.

Soviet WWII patterns don't get anymore genuine than Olive drab with some red stars. the more elaborate ones are either two tone medium and dark green or just two shades of grey with some red markings and that's it.

Maybe in terms of rigidity but when the hands themselves are designed for smaller suits then it messes with the proportions. As well hands are for more than holding guns and beam sabers, articulated hands are quite useful if you don't want to go through the hassle of swapping out hands, and they also allow for more natural looking open hand poses.

> The fingers on most kits are restricted to the hooked fingers because of fragility and they almost always have shit detail.

Master grades haven't had hands like that since 2012, the articulated hands nowadays are found on 3.0 and larger kits, and are basically downsized perfect grade hands with joints at each knuckle

Not really derailment, its more that hes undergoing development.

He originally had a lot of misplaced resentment towards Mika for completing 3 surgeries while his brother couldn't even complete one. He wanted to be a ms pilot and prove he was better than Mika to validate his brother. At this point he thinks Mika is only so strong because of the AV system and gundam.

However, after seeing Mika fight a few times and nearly pissing his own pants during his own chance at combat he realizes that Mika is actually strong even compared to other AV and Gundam pilots and wanting to improve he asks Mika to teach him to pilot ms on the way to Earth.

Earth was then his ultimate proof that he doesn't measure up as he finally gets his chance to pilot an ms and prove himself only to get his ass handed to him.

Basically his character development has been about not so much butt kissing Mika as humbling him and breaking him of his undeserved arrogance.

Vallejo paints are very good. Easy to thin with water, so they require less ventilation than Tamiya. You can also handbrush a lot easier than with Tamiya. They dry a little less hard, so you have to give it a day to dry or it will get ripped up by masking tape/small scratches.

Vallejo primer is great and comes in a huge bottle. Really good amount per dollar ratio. It can actually be striped with alcohol, unlike Tamiya, which means you can fix mistakes easily.

Tamiya you can get away with airbrushing with no primer, don't expect that to work well with Vallejo.
>>
>>14981748

>>
>>14981813
Tamiya acrylics miserable to handbrush with. Their paint requires a lot of thinning with their proprietary thinner (alcohol also works, but not as well), or it will be streaky as all hell. But since you're using a lot of thinner, it also means you run the risk of pulling up paint you just laid down with your brush.

So normally when you paint with acrylics, you put the paint on the model and move it around while it's wet, then wait for it to dry, which takes only a few seconds or minutes depending on how wet it is, then you can add another layer to solidify your color and cover missed spots. When you try doing that with Tamiya, the new layer will pull up with your brush strokes because the thinner loosens the paint, which looks AWFUL. You end up having to wait an hour to a day between layers for the paint to really harden. So yeah, it's really frustrating and takes forever. It also means handbrush touch ups or small details can be really frustrating.

Don't know about their other lines.

>>
>>14981836
Dammit, I was planning to keep costs down by handbrushing.
>>
>>14981851
>>14981852
I've handbrushed with Vallejo primer on non-Gundam minis and it works well. On Gundams, you have the problem you always have with handbrushed primer: it streaks until a base layer is applied, so you end up going slightly thicker with primer than you would if you airbrushed it. Just in general I would recommend saving yourself a LOT of hassle and buy a compressor/airbrush. Hand painting requires a lot of skill for Gundams and no matter what skill level you are, it takes a lot more time and effort than airbrushing.

I used to play Warhammer and I can tell you from personal experience from hand painting a bunch of vehicles that it's frustrating as fuck if you're actually trying to get flat layers.

You can get a compressor+airbrush combo on Amazon that will get the job done for about $100 and you'll save DAYS of "fuck I want to kill myself this blows."

The painful part is that I DO have an airbrush and compressor, it's just that I'm not able to use it in my new place so it sits there being wasted.

Everyone tells me how much harder and frustrating hand brushing is which is making it really intimidating for me, but I don't have much else of a choice right now if I want to paint.

I guess there's also the option of using spray cans, but by the time I can actually paint (December or January), it'll probably be way too cold for the paint to work properly when I spray outside.

Thanks for the info though. From what you've told me, this paint job will probably turn out looking terrible, but.. Alright. Fuck me, I guess.

I don't own a spray booth so what I used to do in my old place was use my airbrush in the backyard.
In my new place, the land lord doesn't let anyone in the backyard for some reason so that option is gone. I can't afford a spray booth currently and even if I could, the compressor is pretty loud and I'm afraid of the land lord complaining about all the noise, especially since it'd keep being loud for a good hour or two.

Man, it feels bad throwing $350 on an airbrush and compressor only to have it stashed in a closet to be forgotten.
>>
>>14982002
What model compressor are you using? Putting foam under most compressors will virtually silence them.

Also you don't need a fancy spray booth if you're working with acrylics. Get a box fan and a 3M 6000 series mask, then take a cardboard box and cut/fold it until it's two sides, a back, and a bottom. You spray into the box, the box catches the paint, the fan makes sure you're getting fresh air, the mask makes sure you're not breathing anything in. Open a window when you're done (or hell, while you work). If you're using Vallejo paint and Windex as the airbrush cleaner, the smell will be negligible.

Not sure about the model, I'll check that when I'm home.

But wow anon thanks a lot! You're a life saver, those are some great ideas.

By the way, would tamiya top coat be okay to spray indoors?
>>
>>14981886
I was planning on spraying the primer then handbrush with some slightly underthinned acrylic or enamel paint, depending on availability.

I'm going for a '50s/retro aesthetic.
>>
>>14982051
No problem!

Don't use spray cans inside. That's a recipe for disaster. And spraying outside can be a problem depending on humidity/temp.

I've used Future Floor Polish (which I think now is something like "Pledge Floor Polish with Future") and Vallejo Gloss varnish and Vallejo matte varnish with airbrushes. They work great. Varnishes dry on the tip of airbrushes though, so you have to clean the tip with thinner or scrape it off with your nails every couple of minutes. Not difficult, just have to be mindful. Also, way less expensive than canned topcoat.
>>
>>14982060
Like I said above. You can do that, but it's going to be much more difficult than using an airbrush. I would recommend looking up guides on hand painting Gundams, as well as hand painting vehicles. There's a lot of resources for painting Warhammer vehicles which roughly translates to Gundams.

You're welcome! Remember that even though the Vallejo Air line is "prethinned" that it's still a good idea to put airbrush thinner/water in before the paint and mix them in the cup. I also use flow improver and I put a few drops of paint retarder in the bottles before I use them. The point of all this is to get thinner coats that flatten out when they dry. This avoids the grainy texture that acrylics can sometimes have. You can get giant bottles of flow improver/retarder from general craft stores (Liquitex is a good brand) for cheap. The thinner can be replaced with tap water if you want, I've found them to be about the same. I do 3 drops of water per ten drops of paint, or two drops of thinner per ten drops of paint.

It sounds like a lot of extra steps, but this will drastically reduce the amount of wasted paint, which saves you money in the long run.
>>
Was the high resolution barbatos worth getting? I know it's expensive but that's the only complaint I hear about it. I'm only asking because I'm curious about the high resolution wing gundam coming out
>>
>>14982140
Personally no, but to be fair it's solidly built, and it's a complete redesign; you can paint a 1/100 Barbatos but it'll only sort of look like it.

I say if you really want it then go for it, otherwise there are better models you can buy.
>>
>>14982134
Alright, I'll be sure to do all that. If I'm going to do it, I might as well do it right. I've used Vallejo model air before but always used it the way it is since it's prethinned, didn't know there were so many other things that could be done to it.

How many drops of improver/retarder do you mix in?

I put ten drops of retarder in the Vallejo bottle. Just pull of the cap, a paint bubble will come up, pop the bubble, and put the retarder in. Then shake it VERY WELL. IT CANNOT BE OVERMIXED. Then there you go, pre-retarded paint. It'll take a little longer to dry now, but just by a few seconds, which is enough to spread out flat.

When I'm ready to paint, I put some water in and spray to make sure the airbrush is still working and doesn't require deep cleaning. Then I empty that out. I put two drops of flow aid per ten drops of paint I expect to use in the cup, then two drops of thinner per ten drops of paint, then the paint. I typically start with twenty drops of paint unless I know I'll be painting a lot with that color. Use a shitty paintbrush (when you buy the flow aid buy a $5 set of small brushes) to mix the paint up in the cup. Then test that the right color is coming out on some paper or the cardboard. Then get to spraying.

I recommend using bamboo skewers with poster tack to hold the pieces. If you want to get fancy you can hot glue alligator clips to the skewers and use those to hold parts. Either way, it's easy to rotate the parts like this and set the skewers in some styrofoam to dry.

The same can also be said about dark blues. If you look at a lot of cartoons and comics, they'll use dark blue instead of black because it allows for more definition to be seen.

For old kits that are out of stock on hlj/amiami/etc, always check Amazon.

That looks baller. might try that for my own HG Geara Zulu.

Come to think of it I also got the Robo damashii Angelo's Zulu but painting one of those might be a more elaborate process I just want to get rid of the faggot lilac scheme.

I was really upset that I lost a piece of my Hi-Nu when I dropped it a month ago but just yesterday I found it, clear as day, underneath my desk.
The world isn't all shit - it might take time, but things eventually get better. You'll find the piece you need one day.

Yeah because purple, black and red are totally the way Okawara intended Doms to be and painting it in some other colors is sacrilegious.
>>
>>14983632
>Angelo's Zulu
I actually really liked that color scheme. Angelo was rather faggy, but like purple is supposed to proper and royal n shit. And he was also very proper and whatnot.
>>
>>14983608
looks good
for the tubes, maybe use gunmetal thats what i used for my sinanju. maybe look up what color gas mask tubes are. the original geara zulu tubes is a dark tan color, so maybe try that. just keep experimenting.

Any new gunpla sites pop up? I love amazon price and shipping-wise but im tired of them not having new releases for 2 months.

What are some good Canadian Gundam retailers besides Hobbywave? Hobbywave is out of stock on a lot of the kits I want and ebay is overpriced, what are some good alternatives?
>>
>>14983646
I wouldn't mind as much if it was a stronger, more fabulous tone of purple but this shit looks almost pink, save from the skirt armor and pauldrons.

Come to think of it I do have a can of Testor's glossy purple laying around I've been meaning to save for a Sazabi ...
>>
What's the best way to strip enamel paint off a kit I fucked up?
>>
>>14983705
Paint over it. no one will notice and it gives you a better surface for the new coat to stick into.
>>
Post the whole thing or stop spamming, your choice.
>>
>>14983691
Why are the shoulders so glossy but not the rest of the kit?
>>
>>14983675
Hobbywave and eBay are your best bet if you don't want to use Hobbywave or eBay.

Will the RG Build Strike be a grenade or will it be a brick like the Raiser and the MK II? Looking at the inner frame it looks like it'll be solid as fuck, which is good, but it's a shame the MS itself is pretty generic looking in terms of looks.
>>
>>14983756
>Strike
>Strike Build
Kill yourself for wanting that.
>>
>>14983756
It looks pretty solid. I wonder if there's gonna be a Star Booster for it.
>>
>>14983756
from reviews, other than a couple loose parts like alot of rg's, the strike base is pretty solid. i've always liked the strike and its variants. im personally more excited for star build strike, but that might be just me
>>
>>14983595
If it were plamo in general I'd choose FAG Gourai.

But if it's gunpla in general I'd have to choose Acguy (cute) or Strike Rouge Ootori (sex)

I'm getting one. The more I look at the Build Strike the more I love it. I have the MG but it's in my backlog. Now I can have TWO Build Strikes in my backlog.

I understand the concern.

I just dont know. Might as well test with my cheap GM and see if it looks good

it would've used the gundam mkii's/RGM-79C's bazooka during the early-late gryps era and probably the Jegan's bazooka 0090 onward

Canadian? Basically none are "good," but some are better than others.

Amazon sometimes has stuff, if you live in/near Toronto, AnimeXtreme on Spadina has decent prices for HGs. Apparently Canadian Gundam is based in Hamilton and you can pick up kits, so that might make them worth checking out.

You might have better luck with Japanese based retailers (HLJ, 1999, amiami, etc.)
