Meh. I'm not really against the existence of the movie, but the second she started questioning her lack of a past I zoned out. The naked suit looks pretty bad too. Either get your tits out or put on some clothes. Don't half ass it.

>It's an "amnesiac protagonist is the centerpiece of a far-reaching conspiracy" film

I want to try to keep an open mind about this, but I'm not liking the way this is shaping up. It just feels too generic to get hyped for.

And for shit's sake, if you're going to typecast a woman known for playing a cold assassin, go all the way. That "my dog just died please give me a hug" tone of voice is highly unfitting.
>>
>>14930224
As generic as it is, I think it's a sold story seed for GitS. The Major is pretty much isolated from everyone else, if you factor in SAC she's, what, fully cyberized from childhood right?

Don't you think that might mess with someone's world view, being a full cyborg starting at your formative years? All you really have to call yourself is the nebulous quantified individuality they call a ghost, and in a world where everything is connected how are you to say that's you in there and not some other outside influence?

It's like, when you realize for the first moment in your life that you are very much a walking blank slate, your body isn't yours, your voice isn't yours, your sensory intake comes from manufactured prosthetics... all you are is a ghost in a shell, and that's kinda unsettling.
>>
Positive from nips
>>
I get what they are going for, but it seems a lot watered down cyberpunk story with GiTs stapled on.

It might now be awful, it won't be muh GiTS and in a year people will have a whatever action to it with a few idiots who think it is amazing
>>
>>14930014

Eh, might actually be good. I liked Batou's bugeyes.

GitS always teased the idea that the fullbody cyborgs have no way of knowing if they are "real" or not, so seeing the movie working on that is at least decent AND it means we won't just get a rehash of Oshii's leftovers.

With that said I can also see this movie being really bad. I thought the slowmo was unfitting off GitS, which usually relies on weighty choreography instead that emphasizes the tech behind everything. I can also see the main story being really fucking bland.

My sense of cool is transcendent, ok?

Also, this is what they will fucking look like if you put them on a real human being. The fact that they still did it means they are actually trying to do an honest portrayal of GitS and not some "made for americans" remake.

>>
>>14930449

>Pretty much the opposite of Edge of Tomorrow which changed everything and yet managed to keep the same spirit.

To be fair, Edge of Tomorrow was re-written by the guy who wrote The Usual Suspects. He might know a thing or two about strong characterisation.
>>
>>14930457

It's not meant to be a knock in any way, I loved EoT.
>>
>>14930465

Oh I wasn't saying it was, but Cruise got a big-boy screenwriter to come in and re-write the whole thing. Originally it was going to be a fairly straight adaptation, but Cruise wasn't crazy about the script so he brought MacQuarrie in to revamp the whole thing.

That's pretty rare for these kinds of movies.
>>
>>14930449
We only found out how much EoT retained the spirit of AYNIK when the film came out and we actually saw it.

>>
>this could have been worse
and more entertaining as a result

It falls right into that shit spot of blandness, half-assed attempts to stick to the source materials, and cheap, clumsy attempts to appeal to modern audiences

And let's not forget that a good part of the 95 movie's appeal comes from the fact that it's hand-drawn animation.
There's a constant amazement that comes with watching great cel animation, that simply cannot be replicated with CG and live-action.

So to sum up:
-it doesn't look as good as anything since Innocence
-the protagonists look awkward and dull as fuck
-the "philosophy" will be dumbed down (and was never very solid to begin with)
-it won't have the appeal of proper animation
-the story will be a retread of Innocence with one or two scenes from the movie, but uglier.

Who would want "the same thing as before but way worse"?

Are you that starved for new GitS material?

Holy shit, I feel like they are going to be shitting on the whole loss of individuality things.
They payed scarlet too much to imply she is a generic design, so they are going to make her a super-hero.

Who else fear that they aren't going to delve anywhere into the idea of exchangeable body ? and do it One "soul" = One body ?

That would be beyond simplifying, that would be shitting on the source material.
At best it might encourage someone to look at Oshii's movie and discover TRUE meaning.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here and say that the trailer looks pretty good.

This is to Ghost in the Shell, as a franchise, what Oshii's films were to the manga. It's a different take that blends defining traits of the manga with an updated look while aiming to stand out on its own.

The trailer shows that it'll be visually impressive and that they've got an interesting hook.

My only issue is that Motoko is defined as being unique and the first of her kind, when Ghost in the Shell's world is in that phase where cyborg tech is genuinely everywhere and she's not the only "full cyborg" person on the planet.

I will echo the sentiment that people are getting bored of ScarJo, though. It's not about her fitting the Major's look/style, but rather just me being tired of seeing her everywhere.

Anything else will have to wait until the film comes out.

This movie just looks like some kind of amalgamation of LUCY and Blade Runner, filtered through the Resident Evil / Ultraviolet / Sucker Punch / Watchmen aesthetic of masturbating over extreme slow motion gun-kata

Also Scarlett Johannson is good at good at pulling off a wry Whedonish smirk, and she's good at doing a worried constipated pout. She demonstrates both quite well in this trailer. Too bad they have nothing to do with the Major.

You've got a solid point, but I feel like it's too early to tell.

The trailer is playing it pretty safe, with a decent blend of mystery and action to get the common film goer going while also serving as bait for fans of the manga/films/anime.

I don't blame them, since Sci-Fi is basically associated with "Flop if you're not Star Wars or Star Trek" in the movie business and is known for being a career killing genre.
>>
My biggest worry about the trailer is that they appear to be trying to focus on a personal story of the Major's (IT'S ALL A LIE THEY STOLE YOUR LIFE) instead of examining the effects of interconnections and the flow of memes in an increasingly cyberized society (the stand alone complex, Solid State, etc) because the point of Ghost in the Shell isn't about the Major herself, it's about the society she operates in.

I honestly don't mind them doing something different, I would have hated it to be a straight up retelling of the movie or something.
>>
>>14931970
He's probably right about the origin story thing though. The thing about Hollywood is that you've just got to have some kind of personal drama going regardless of the situation. Also romance sub-plot. Those two elements are there more often than not.

The latest Godzilla films are the best contrast of this mindset.
>Annozilla: it's a major event, so you have a huge cast, an overarching view of things, how multiple parties react to the situation etc
>Legendzilla: camera follows some bloke who coincidentally ends up wherever zilla is all the time; half the film is about this bloke's personal drama

So yeah, while it's true the rest are still speculations, going by Hollywood's track records, there are some firm bets to go with.
>>
>>14932001
I was only referring to the fact that Laughing Man can be done in a single film and does not need more set up. It is just an excuse

>No the fact that they chose something besides Laughing Man or the Puppet Master.
You mean they repurposed some script and said no guys it is totally GiTS look we made a scene look similar. Sure an original story could be great, this isn't looking to be some new really out there sci-fi story though. In which case I'd happily take a complete retread

Pretty much

People don't always respond to something just exploring ideas, they can but it is a risk and studios hate risks these days. Personal drama you get everyone, from people shipping on tumblr to soccer moms. True. For example, Dredd didn't have personal drama between the protagonists and the antogonists. Character drama was mostly on a Rookie earning her chops, and not any personal vendetta.
And Dredd tanked. No way will hollywood try something like that for GitS.
>>
>>14932407
My thoughts exactly. Adding to that, at no point in the movie did Dredd take his helmet off, which is a huge no-no in Hollywood since star actors' faces need to be exposed, source material faithfulness or not.

ScarJo being called "Makoto Kusanagi" will sound stupid no matter how hard people try to defend it.

Edgge of Tomorrow was smart enough to give everyone white names. Liman and MacQuarrie knew you can't have Tom Cruise walk around with an Asian name and expect people to take it seriously.

It does have a bit of a "fake Japan" feel to it but that in itself is (while not a GitS trope) a cyberpunk trope so that's okay I guess.

Aside from that and Johannson looking silly and calling herself "the major" it actually doesn't look TOO bad. At least they actually seem to be trying to make a GitS movie instead of the usual Hollywood "steal the name and turn everything else into generic shit".

I do think that whitewashing is daft but at the same time I can't help but feel vaguely offended, as a Japanese myself, at the sheer arrogance of the Asian-American community and how they claim that race alone determines culture.

Their shallow attempts to take claim of Japanese culture time and again are far closer to cultural appropriation than Hollywood's stupid bullshit.

And do note how I stated Asian-American, not Japanese-American, because in many cases they aren't even Japanese.

The issue is that since ScarJo does not look Japanese calling her a Japanese name stands out like a sore thumb.

If you're gonna make an American GITS just make an American GITs. The show is about it's themes not its names so copying the names just for mass appeal is lazy.

the GITs world is huge. If this was just some different anti cyber terrorism group dealing with the issues the work is about then no one would really be complaining but as it is we just got a shitty call for nostalgia and brand name recognition.

>Do you really think that if scientists in Japan managed to create a lifelike robot that they would call it John Smith simply because it didn't look Japanese?

They wouldn't call it John Smith because it'd definitely be a woman.

But as a matter of fact they probably would give it a western name if it looked western, yes.

My expectations for the movie are low, but I'm willing to give this a look at least. It could be one of three things:

1. An Edge of Tomorrow sorry, I meant LIVE. DIE. REPEAT. where they are able to tell the core of the story even with the changes to the outer shell

2. An I, Robot, where they take the name and broad thematic strokes all the while not even bothering to adapt the stories themselves

Problem : a case study is to be shown in a neutral way, but we no know it will be a story centered around her "unique of her kind".
And Hollywood can't do analysis on topic they probably didn't understand themselves.
They paid scarljo a lot to be here, so she'll be a super cyborg-ninja fighting a conspiracy and attract people who otherwise wouldn't know what a Ghost and a Shell is and so on.

We will be blessed if they even imply the idea that in that universe Scarlet brain could be swapped between body. (Imagine the fuzz if they implied she could be transfered into a male body with no difference)

This is a cyborg body, the person using it is Japanese.
Sure they could rekon it easily since the body is 100% artificial, but we all know Hollywood do it because of cultural appropriation. It will be a miracle they didn't totally Americanize the stuff

This trailer makes me worried. It seems like a full origin story, where Section 9 isn't even around and the Major is still very hesitant about being a cyborg and not just treating it like an everyday part of her life.

And Scarlet Johannson's voice reminds me very unpleasantly of Lucy, that shitty movie where she was a super-genius assassin with no emotions. She has no range to her voice and no ability to act when she's in monotone mode.

It feels like an adaptation of Blade Runner more than an adaptation of GiTS. I guess I can see the similarities between some of the set design and establishing shots to GiTS 1, rather than SAC or GiTS 2, but it gives the whole movie a feeling that rather than this cyborgization and such being the norm and the challenge being to keep the peace in such a society, it is instead just a cyberpunk knockoff about
>Oh no I've got a robot body, am I still human???

I was pretty fucking pissed at that geisha scene. It started out looking like it was copying the seen from SAC, and then they had a bunch of suited assassins walk in. Like, why? The geisha robots were already there, making a bunch of meatbags do the assassinating just defeats the purpose of the whole thing. The entire point was that robots are ubiquitous, but because of that they can also be dangerous in the wrong hands. Now it's just referencing it in order to lead to a Matrix-standard Hollywood action scene.

I had to stop watching at the moment when the awkward exposition dialogue began. "First of your kind" and all that. The lazy matrix garbage was already bad enough, but golly.

I keep watching this trailer over and over again. I've seen it around 30 times at this point, and it keeps looking better and better. I'm getting hyped, which I know I shouldn't be getting.

I wish scarjo wouldn't play the major the way she's shown in the trailer, she's too cold I think. But that could be the fault of the director.

Am I missing something? I don't think the movie deserves the hate its been getting based off this trailer alone.

Insight is thumbsupemoji. This kind of thing really needs to be academic paper length, though. Like Motoko in that suit, he needs more support. And I'm not convinced that his inability to be convinced about the film's feminist (humanist, w/e) bent is genuinely based on an earnest read of the film itself and not his biases. I would call GITS inadvertently feminist, not so much in that it's promoting female empowerment as it is concerned with breaking through the gendered conceits of society.

Motoko is a brain. Brains can be subtly male or female, but fundamentally (and especially removed from the endocrine system) they're not gendered. Using a powerful main character that appears female throughout is a good way rip us out of cliche and get us questioning. I suppose radfems might disagree, but there are a lot of feminists who just want recognition of an equal humanity with men. When you reduce people to brains in jars and then give them interchangeable jars with boobies, that about does it.

>And I'm not convinced that his inability to be convinced about the film's feminist (humanist, w/e) bent is genuinely based on an earnest read of the film itself and not his biases.

I think he made a good point, comparing it to the action scenes in all. The fact that Motoko's female is only subversive on a surface level.

Although I will admit that the character and themes wouldn't be nearly as memorable if she weren't, or at least didn't appear, female.
>>
>>14934255
That would assume they care for both the topic and creativity.
They don't, else they wouldn't be adapting/copying someone else idea and shoehorning the super-heroes origin story they have been hammering for years.
>>
>>14935540
>When you reduce people to brains in jars and then give them interchangeable jars with boobies

You got GITS completely backwards. Motoko is not a brain in a jar with tits. GITS actually emphasizes her womanhood and motherhood and puts it at the forefront of the story. The reason she is chosen to merge with the AI (which has an unmistakable male voice) is because she is the only one on the team that is a female (you never wondered why that was?). GITS is an exploration of what motherhood means in a future where childbearing is complicated by the presence of both artificial bodies and artificial life. The film doesn't go through the pains of showing Motoko's naked body on multiple occassions because it is irrelevant, but the to continually remind you that Motoko is still a woman despite all the artificiality. If you remove Motoko's femininity then it COMPLETELY changes the story and its themes. GITS is not "inadvertently feminist" for it is not feminist at all.

It wasn't Hollywood though. It was a British/South African production.

What you've just described is an intrinsically feminist work, though, particularly in a world where the default is to not really give a shit about a woman's struggle with her individuality in the face of an unconcerned world.

Though I suppose it could be said that the ultimate focus is on the product of her femininity (a child), a reduction that is surprisingly conservative despite the film's other themes.

It's up for interpretation. I like that.

To me you are the one who go GitS (Oshii's 1st) backward. If I didn't knew better I would think you are baiting.

There really was nothing about "motherhood", the topic was the nature of conscience and at no point was it question of procreation in the original meaning.
The major (which could have been a man or using a man body) fusing with the puppet master was to create a new "species" out of a doomed one (the original puppet master which could only clone itself) and a individual who didn't felt human anymore.
The reason the major was chosen as explained here >>14933110 has nothing to do with her gender, it's because the two entity simply though completely alike.

Reminder : the result of that fusion is someone with the memory of Motoko Kusanagi and the though process of project 2501. You can barely call it a child if you assume that Motoko and project 2501 are now "dead", which is precisely the sort of notion that became meaningless thanks to technology.

> tl,dr
The only reason Motoko Kusanagi is a woman is because Shirow Masamune is being himself.

>when Ghost in the Shell's world is in that phase where cyborg tech is genuinely everywhere and she's not the only "full cyborg" person on the planet.

There's a scene in the original movie (the one with the ferry and all the shots of the city) where The Major briefly locks eyes with someone who has the exact same model body as her. It's a genuinely fascinating/surprising moment and serves to illustrate that she -isn't- unique and a lot of her fears about possibly not being who or what she thinks she is are justified.

I don't think we'll be seeing any of that here.
>>
>>14937787
I think we will, even if it is a bit nonsensical for this movie

My problem is more that just making it about memories is really a downgrade. The idea that your whole life you know could be a lie, is much scarier than just not knowing your past. Especially cause the first makes forming a sense of self much more difficult and the focus, rather than just find the past that informs and is the solution.

Changes like that which would seem little to some can have profound differences

Okay, so what the fuck did this guy actually do? It's been so long since I've watched 2nd GIG, but all I remember is a bunch of build-up with no pay off and then he gets riddled by the Major.

Kuze did loads more in the grand scheme of things throughout the season. I'm sure he did something significant, I just can't fucking remember.

He's not wrong, though. Sure, CGI's gotten better at bringing fiction to life, but look how much of the story is usually lost in these adaptions. Hell, live action can't even adapt live action without losing something for the sake of "updating" the narrative.
>>
>>14938360
Live action is only limited by the things that limit animation (budget, competency, directorial influence).
Not to mention there are certain subjects and genres that live action excel at compared to animation, such as horror.

In the criminal justice system, cyber based crime is particularly difficult to investigate. In Neo Tokyo, the dedicated detectives who investigate these increasingly complex felonies are members of an elite squad known as Public Security Section 9.

These are their stories.
*DONK DONK*
>>
>>14938566
But for real: SAC, 2nd Gig and SSS are all a linear run of the Section 9 team with some time breaks between each one. The show is serialized, so there's an over arching plot with occasional isolated story episodes. SAC is season one, following the Laughing Man hacker who held a hostage in the middle of a massive crowd of street commuters: however cyberization is very common and anyone nearby had their eyes hacked and never saw the man's face.

The second season is a fair bit more complex, dealing with a refugee crisis in Japan, and the onset of a group calling themselves the Individual Eleven. The Individual Eleven seem to fight for recognition of the largely forgotten refugees, among them is Kuze: a charismatic man galvanized by the past he admires.

SSS is barely a massive reworking of the original movie in a few ways, but ultimately it just a SAC movie. It just seems like a big enough idea for a movie was still left over, but too complex to inject it into the already thick show.

She doesn't do anything most Japanese celebs tend to get known doing. She does smaller scale stuff. Her biggest movie is her playing a deaf highschooler. Her English speaking domain works are easily more popular, and most of them aren't on anyone's radar.... Pacific Rim, Babel (complete with nude scenes), and 47 Ronin. She just passable at best, and just happened to find work outside of Japan.
