***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Very nicely done, I like the color scheme and flatness of the suit. I agree with the others that the weapons need something extra though, they're a bit too flat.
Also, why are the front-facing cannons colored in the suit's color, while the upwards facing ones aren't?

Reposting from last thread.

After accidentally ordering Polycarbonate spray I decided to do a test piece just to experiment. I figured because polycarbonate is usually sprayed inside clear plastic RC bodies that primer wouldn't be needed. However, after two coats there are these strange "smooth" spots, which happen to be where the holes are on the back to connect the inside of the shield are. Do you think this is from lack of primer or just the fact that polycarbonate normally dries so rough?
>>
>>14928393
Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't Polycarbonate sprays normally eat through gunpla plastics and the like?

I don't think adding primer would help too much.
>>
>>14928393
>>14928411
Yeah. The plastic used for RC cars is a lot tougher than the stuff used for models, so the solvents in PC sprays can be a lot more aggressive, meaning they can basically eat through gunpla
>>
>>14928411
I googled a lot trying to find a clear answer before I started. I heard some people say that it "etches", but not sure about "eats", so to speak.

What are some of the best tool sets?

Been really needing one, been cutting with just a knife and using nail filers.
>>
>>14928508

buy individual tools instead of a set
>>
oop someone got triggered I guess
>>
>>14928526
But it's a lot more expensive to do that. A tool set is more appealing because of its price.
>>
>>14928508
Cutters and knife is all you need.
I build two kits now and I don't know why people need to sand down nubs. It looks shit if you sand nubs. Just cut them off with the knife.
>>
>>14928570
Not really. Some of those are common items you can find in hardware shops for cheaper because they don't have a brand or "hobby" label attached. Some items are things you may never use.
>>
So is it OK to cut the plate skirt so that they move separately?
>>

After trimming a nub with a knife, wet sand with increasing grits of sandpaper. It's that simple.
If you want an example, check out the shoulder of this jegan. You can see where the the nub used to be, yet the surrounding area looks EXACTLY the same as the rest of the shoulder piece
>>
>using sandpaper instead of shitty nailblocks from aliexpress

oh, so that's why my 1500 grit sandpaper didn't clean the nub to match the rest of my gouf.

Unless someone else knows something I don't, you have to paint each piece individually. It's not like an airbrush sprays a huge cone of paint, the ones you use for modelling are actually pretty concentrated
If you want to learn more, the "Fun to build GUNPLA" (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJV1h9xQ7Hx-SoCOivVEHNDOl16VWLB3A) series by bandai has a section on airbrushing, and Paul Budzik, who does some highly informative videos for more traditional scale models, has a playlist about airbushes as well (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRK4diRzRX1dR1mLnD9HGKdCtl2CxIiy6)

You paint basically each piece individually, or in small enough sections that everything is even and nothing shows when you move the limbs or change the pose.

For example you might do something like leave 2 halves of the thigh armor connected, but you would not want to paint a joint together because if you bend it, the unpainted part would show. There is almost no reason to ever try and paint multiple parts at once unless they are super small; you just get uneven paint or too thick, and you waste a ton of paint.

It depends on what you mean my large batches of parts, but it's usually best if you can half-assemble as much as you can then mount them on cocktail sticks & bluetac for ease of access without touching them with your fingers.

I had tried priming the runners then snipping and cleaning up the parts, but you inevitably have to prime again. It's almost universally better when each part of the model is half-assembled (like arms, guns, leg parts etc) as it means less to paint.

Not many people use black as a main color for several reasons

If I were going to do that I would do postshading, which is a bit harder especially on small panels, but the idea is you paint the whole kit black and then use a very dark grey in the center of the panels, but you have to be very precise to do this

It's easier on things like tonks

There aren't really any hard and fast rules, you just want to paint everything in the sections that will give you the best possible result.

Unfortunately this usually means individual pieces, but there are some exceptions. For example, if the thigh armor is a front and back piece, take each piece, put them together and then paint them as the whole thigh armor.

For large surfaces that join together, you want to paint those together when you can, because any difference at all in the paint will be extremely clear once you put them back together. So like you can see on these GP02 binders, the large grey halves meet under the blue parts. To paint these (if I weren't welding them) I would take everything else off and push the grey halves together and paint them together, so that when I put the binders back together there is no difference between the halves.

>>14930900
Yeah
>>
>>14930900
>>14930915

I don't understand how people are so confused about painting, the pieces literally come apart into color separated pieces, why would you paint any pieces together unless it helps. Like why would you ever paint an assembled arm if you don't need to, when you could just paint the pieces. This is literally one of the huge advantages of gunpla

They've been pumping out Star Wars, Macross, Figure Rise, Figure Rise Bust, Pokemon, One Piece, and Yokai Watch kits, while also juggling three different HG lines. Then there's some RE/100s, IBO's 1/100 NGs, and P-Bandai MG kits that they've been doing. I'm inclined to believe the theory that Bandai's just been using their resources on things other than MGs for the time being.

Aside from the Blastoise one you've probably seen, I haven't seen much customization of the original frog Gusion.

It is a thicker and different shaped suit than normal so that will restrict you somewhat, so you will have to work with that.

If you mean the rebakes, they are pretty normal aside from the extra arms and ass shields which you can remove or mod to your own ends.

To understand why someone would ask. For instance, a Guncannon is far more modable than the Nightingale. As these upstanding anons have pointed out the frog gusion is nowhere near as modable as the rest of the IBO line. It is not "retarded" to inquire after a model if the net and dalong fail to answer the question suitably when said models require hard earned cash that one may not wish to invest without full knowledge.

Hey guys, just finished my first!

A friend got me into it, so I had some advice from him and I read the sticky before buying supplies, but then we just walked into a local store that has a decent selection and I grabbed whatever caught my eye. Little did I know it was over 20 years old, but whatever.

I posted my progress on the legs last week, and people gave me some good advice, like to gloss coat before panel washing. I also still haven't top coated the thing, though it may be too late for that now that I've put stickers on, right?

Did I do okay? Also, how much better has build quality gotten over the years? I had a hell of a time filling in those lines, is that an example of something that gets better over the years?

I hear people sand then down. But sanding down nubs really fucks up the plastic surrounding the nub. I always just cut then off with a knife for a clean look.

I use nail files actually, then polish with sand paper. Its a trick I picked up from sharpening knives. Nail files are easy to work with, high grit and come with a different grit on both sides, and are cheap.

Most likely something from The Origin or Thunderbolt- a recolor of the Psycho Zaku into the traditional green version, or a retool of the RX-78-2 Origin into the Gundam Local Type.

I will suck Bandai's eternal cock if it ends up being pic related though.

Received these bad boys today.

What was the last kit that you got delivered ?
>>
>>14934044
HG GN Archer. Was a pretty good build, I'll need to pick up another Master Grade some time though.
>>
>>14932377
Or just get the RDs
>>
Do you play with your gunpla?
>>
>>14934094
No, other than occasional posing changes
>>
>>14934070
Already have one, I'd like to have a model tho, I'd probably get this http://www.shapeways.com/product/366ZGXKA6/head-shoulders-and-knees?optionId=57259344 otherwise.

How are Bandai's MG Ingrams? They look really cool but I'm guessing the rubber joints covers make it so they can't really hold any pose other than standing?
I've also heard they degrade over time.
Would I be wasting my money if I bought one over an MG Heavyarms EW?
Would it look like shit if I replaced the joint covers with some grey cloth?

I actually just finished my MG Ingram 1 fairly recently, but unfortunately I don't have it with me. Of course that rubbery material leaves bad marks, but for the most part they are covered. The articulation is definitely pretty limited and it will require some minor paint touches to make it color accurate. There's a lot of screws, like with older MGs, so it feels pretty sturdy. I bought mine for $20 un-opened, so for me that wasn't a bad deal at all, but if you have to pay too much because it is scarce then I might pass on it. I also own the MG Heavyarms, it's a really nice kit, but the gatling gun and the ammo strip that feeds into it was kind of irritating for me, but other than that I liked it. Do keep in mind that it's a pretty simple kit, like most Wing MGs
>>

it's gonna be a MG Bearguy

The Feb MG should be P-Bandai, but it's not.

I'm just glad we're getting a February MG.

No you won't.

Have you guys ever met someone else who liked gunpla that wasn't someone who you got into gunpla and wasn't the person who got you into gunpla? What are they like? Aside from the friend that got me into it the only other person I personally know who likes it is a huge snob about it. I'm curious if other gunpla fans are friendly and this guy is just an ass or if being an ass is the norm

I wish I were building gundamus right now. If you are just sitting at your desk and read this you are obligated to get 2 things done on a kit if possible
>>
>>14934454
Wouldn't a melee Guntank have cable-linked shot lancers for shoulder cannons instead of awkward mega axes?
>>
>>14934445

I actually tried to reach out locally over the last year and had some mixed success.

I've met some gunpla people and they are kind of stereotypical nerds who are basically much more into gundam than models, who buy tons of kits but don't really want to paint. They argue constantly about the show and are generally SEED and 00 fans. This was before Greco and IBO for reference. No judgment on the shows, just what I observed.

The one girl I've met is a super tomboy/gay and is an employee at the hobbytown nearby and she is a lot better and can actually paint.
There's also an older guy who is your typical sci-fi modeler where he is nerdier and slightly younger than the military guys, but still like 40 something, he builds mostly armor but does some like real robot shit like votoms. He's got good tips

Actually come to think of it all of the people I have met doing models of any kind basically fit the stereotypes you'd expect. The military guys are all old, most former service members, my local group happens to focus on aircraft because we have an air national guard branch. The one guy I met who did like superhero figs wore all black and had a black bandana and missing 2 teeth. He was weird as shit but very good.

My personal favorite is an ancient hotrod wizard named Royal (first name). He runs an true local hobby store in town with all kinds of awesome stuff and basically sits behind a desk and listens to 50's rock all day and talks about cars with some other weird old guys who apparently are retired(?). He's super good obviously, and also does an order from HLJ every month, so if I want anything from HLJ I can get it with no shipping.
>>
>>14934495

Even though he is a hotrod guy he really cares about all cars which is super cool. You can get kei car kits, an RB26DETT full engine swap kit, bride seats, as well as a ton of licensed scale wheels by RAYS Volk Racing, Work, etc. His dedication to that shit is awesome.
>>
>>14934454
not possible, I'm too lazy.
>>
>>14934495

fuck I wish I had a local hobby store like that, hobbytown is ok but there's so much other shit and most people are there for rc cars and drones now
>>
>>14934475

maybe if you don't like awesome alternating chopping axes yes

they wouldn't even just be used when he was attacking, they would constantly be chopping LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT as he rolled around

Gundam fans are all autistic asshole shitstains. Every single one.
Except that Robert guy who used to do gunpla reviews, but he is kill.

Just finished the RG Exia. It's nothing special, but would you guys say it looks nice enough to show an inquiring family member? Yes I know the film on the leg is missing.
My main problem is I can't seem to pose this fucker. He won't stay on the action base and his GN Sword keeps falling off the arm connection.

yeah much better size, I think the good sizes range generally from 700 wide to 2000 wide depending on if you are taking a picture of a single part or several kits together for example

>that wasn't someone who you got into gunpla and wasn't the person who got you into gunpla?
>>
>>14934495
I only know 2 people besides my best friend who enjoy gunpla. The first one is a Hambeast who goes to the same hobby shop I do who has similar taste in kits to me. She used to come in the day they got new shipments and get all the zakus, goufs, doms, etc and just leave the gundams or she'd take a kit that I'd look at and think "this is cool but I should finish the kits I currently have before getting more ". I now come under earlier than her and take as much zeek shit as I want. The other is a guy who's super snobby about it. My friend got me into gunpla and when I showed my friend pictures of my first kit this guy said "that's shit no panel lining, he didn't sand the nubs, and no top coat this is garbage" even though I had no idea what that stuff was. When I improved he'd say shit like "wow what a fag he used gundam markers instead of panel line wash" or "what fag uses sandpaper instead fIles" or "wow way to not seam weld and paint". Recently I found out the most work he did was panel line, top coat, and put all the decals on nu gundam
>>
>>14934888
He sounds like he's just engaging in friendly banter, anon
>>
>>14934760
This made me realize Amazing Red Warrior isn't that bad without that silly ass shield and solid red color scheme.
>>
>>14934888
>what fag uses sandpaper instead fIles
Anybody who has ever tried to sand nubs with a file knows it's a gateway to absolutely fucking everything up.
>>
>>14934888
>>14934992

Files and sandpaper aren't either/or, most people who are serious use both because they are good for different stuff. Sandpaper is probably a better choice for just nubs though
>>
>>14935017
I mainly use them to shrink the nubs down a good bit if it's really big but not big enough for me to feel comfortable getting with a knife. He's said a lot of weird shit over the past few months I've been in the hobby. When I was still really new I wacted to try weathering (this was before i new about/m/ and theven guide) and I asked him for advice on how to do it. Like I asked should I put on a clear coat before I weather and he said "no that's fucking dumb weathering would just ruin the clear coat put that on last" Then when I did that he said "wow you are fucking dumb for not putting down a coat first you just ruined the kit" he also recommended some shitty paint that looked awful. He was just an ass. he dropped out of school and still can't drive so maybe gunpla is all he has and that's why he wanted to feel superior

And legs done. Now I just need to top coat. Was gonna enter this into the contest, but between figuring out where to mount the missiles, and building the pilebunker, along with work and paint, it just didint get there. Not gonna go with gloss, have had bad luck with it lately, was just thinking clear coat. Got a little to liberal with super glue to keep the chest...tube things in, now the front waist......flap.... wont move, completely fucking up most leg poseability. Live and learn I guess. Next build is going to be more of a stright build. Minimal painting. Prolly gonna be one of the GMs in the backlog.
>>
For seam removal and painting, do I fill the seams for the parts of the limb after assembly, then paint, and just mask the rest to keep what I want a different color safe?
