***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

>>
i recently saw a post of a zaku 1 that looked like a conversion kit from a zaku 2.

does anyone have one or know how I could do it?
>>
Reposting from last thread:

For seam removal and painting, do I fill the seams for the parts of the limb after assembly, then paint, and just mask the rest to keep what I want a different color safe?
>>
>>14935320
Not sure exactly what you're saying, but that sounds about right

Sorry anon, I'm running on low sleep, made a pic to describe what I was asking.
>>
>>14935347
More or less, depending on how the model is constructed. If it's a shoulder, you could also try to do a c joint mod if that's possible. If it's not possible, probably the easiest way is paint the arm first, attach and seam weld the shoulder, and them mask off the painted arm

Thanks anon!

My store always gets really good kits when they start to run low and everytime they do I end up buying at least 5
>>
>>14935684
Sturdy as fuck actually. All of the joints are very solid, at least on my kit, it can even hold up the Gusions hammer with 1 arm. None of the panels or other bits pop off, and its fairly posable to boot, though the legs dont like to bend backwards, due to huge thruster nozzles getting in the way, but more of an inherent flaw in the design of the Kampfer than the fault of the kit engineering.

Pretty solid kit overall, though it demands to be painted, since is lacks all the yellow details asside from the vernier thrusters in the shoulder and chest. I think I might even buy the master grade at some point
>>
>>14935720
Man I don't know what I'd do if mine got good kits in regularly.

Just recently went to a huge place in Sydney and I would be broke if I could go there regularly. Pretty much every 00 1/100 NG, a bunch of cool older MG's, actual AGE kits, and even a bunch of Macross Delta stuff.

Oh and Mechanicore Tief Sturmer's too but they were $800 AUD so fuck that.

Speaking of shipping, my HG Grimoire just came in the mail. Now I'm one step closer the starting work on the Z'Grim Rodi. The Z'Gok should be here any day now, as well.

So let me get this straight.

This p-bandai kit is just a vac silver coated hg unicorn where the only "new" part is the horn and the joint/gun plastic is still regular plastic and not even metallic injected, is this correct?

I love unicorn variants, I even have the puke gold and first release of the RC phenex, but this is a bit...boring isn't it?

And whats the deal with the gold phenex, is that a convention exclusive or is that p-bandai as well?
>>
>>14935650
Is that actually a problem? Functionally, that's no different than paying a licencing fee. And bandai would rather have SOMETHING come from China rather than nothing, which given Chinese copywrite laws is the alternative.
>>
>>14936110
I feel like Bandai has saturated the Unicorn market. There's a million variants and honestly i don't understand how people are still excited about new Unicorn kits.

So I got "primer" the other day from my LHS. Clerk got it for me.
Unfortunately, I didn't look at it closely enough until after I used it, and it wasn't the same primer I had been using before, since the can broke on me halfway into it.
So this "primer" turned out to be white paint and the first thing that happened was that the part you press down on came flying off. I put it back on, go to spray the pieces after testing it, and man, the shit pooled almost instantly, and it's real pearlesent, which sucks. So I'm boned for now, unless I can make it work somehow, but the shit can't even be sanded off. I'll have to get a rag and lacquer thinner.

I just wanted to paint this thing, I was so excited.
I just needed a few parts primed, like little itty bitty spots.
Pic related. It's what I get for not waiting for my LHS to get the same primer in.

Okay cool,

I want to make a couple as Christmas presents, but didn't know wether to just assemble them or do a full paint job.
>>
>>14936488
Pic related is the spot that needed primer, but somehow I just managed to find a small thing of grey primer from over two years ago that actually restored the poorly primed pieces to being smooth and nice looking, so problem solved I guess.

though certain areas are gonna look slightly different from the ones that have been primed in white. All well, I wanted an unusual color scheme anyways.

Wow I'm glad people are answering this good job guys!
How about some more questions such as:
Least favorite kit and why
Mine is the schwalbe graze since it's not sturdy at all and it needs a lot of work to compare to the rest of the i.b.o kits

Kit you were disappointed with and why
For me it was gundam thunderbolt ver ka. The kit had a great build but the waterslides were ass. I put them on and was going to put a top coat over them in the morning but when I woke up a lot of decals fell off and a good bit were even ripped since half of the decal tried staying on.

Kit you hope gets made and why
For me it's any mg of a good gundam suit or even a hg that's not burning, shining, or master

Non gunpla kits you've built or are interested in?
Has anyone built any of the metal gear kits (mainly ray) or armored core kits? They look really good to me but I can't find a detailed review
>>

I have the Athene, was one of my first kits. Didn't have any real problems with it, it's large and I love the owl design.
>>
>>14936601
>Least favorite kit

I disliked the 00 Gundaml. I think it's because it lost the Exia's minimalist aesthetic and the twin drive system was goofy. I actually prefer the 00 Raiser to it, strangely enough.

>disappointed kit
The Throne Zwei. I really like the design but it needed so much painting to look good that I gave up on it halfway.

>kit you hope is made
I want a RE/100 or MG Reborns Gundam; failing that, a Throne Zwei.

>non-gunpla kit
I built a bunch of SRW kits (I'm hoping they make the Laz Angriff at some point)

Armored Core kits are standard koto fare, made of hard plastic that feels like razor blades.

HG Sinanju Titanium ver. because when you remove nubs on these kits, paint get removed as well, except it is not an issue with golden paint pieces as Sumo gold type if you have a golden gundam marker.
The kit is also very loose and some pieces fall off when you touch it.

It was a gift from friends but I won't get a HG anymore.

Gouf Custom. I love the design, but the fact that I botched it as my first build (broke one of the shins, lost the horn a few months later, hideous nubs) and the left arm also keeps falling off makes me wary of this kit.

>Disappointed
Advanced Hazel. I like the head, but buying it together with the Hazel Custom was certainly a mistake. They're way too similar and I vastly prefer the Custom's nuances than the Advanced's.

To be fair, what the fuck are you supposed to do about nubs placed that obviously on a metallic kit? Even with proper nub removal and repainting, I don't think there's a way to make them inconspicuous, especially since they're on major seamlines.

What country are you in?
Because really, I would just order from Japan.
If you're in the NL like me, you get free customs for any SAL shipping (which never takes more than 2.5 weeks for me) for which the price of the goods itself (the shippers will usually declare when the send it) under €21. The numbers are on the PostNL website. So you can get any kit or kits up to ~2400 yen and only pay around ~€10 in shipping if it's registered or unregistered SAL and wait 2 - 3 weeks.
The only sites I know in the NL usually have HGs for €20+ and then a standard €6.50 shipping that only takes 2 - 4 days. They do have a very limited selections, keep that in mind though. So you can get more kits for less ordering from Japan, but it takes longer and depends on which particular kit you want. If it's over 2400 yen then it's best to just look for the cheapest one you can find on sites here.

Again, this is just if you're in the NL, I can't help you otherwise. Europe is a big place.

The RG Sinanju was a pretty intense build and took my quite a while. A very pretty kit but holy hell is he a pain in the ass to pose, bits like to pop off and as far as RG go he's got the least amount of poseability mostly due to all the extraneous bits sticking out. Finding it difficult to take pictures thanks to how shiny it is. I've gotten suggestions to try matting him but I don't know if I'll go down that route as I enjoy it in person. Also again, quite a big boy.

That said I still took some pictures to share.

So I'm working on my action base 1 before starting my first gundam, and I'm already experiencing the joys of making mistakes.

Does anyone have an image example of how clean you can get things to look after removing a nub using only a blade? I can get the nub off no problem, but I can't really clean up the mark left behind without gouging the shit out of the plastic. I feel like it'd look better without me trying to tidy it up, so maybe I'm just trying to go farther than the capabilities of my blade. Do I just need start sanding if I want to go cleaner?

And is there some secret to holding these tiny ass plastic parts? I'm not too worried about cutting myself, but I'd really like to get a better grip without bruising my fingers.
>>
>>14937200
You should be using the razor to get the nub cut very close to the model. Then you should be sanding it until it's flush with increasing grit sizes. It sounds tedious, but if you've got everything in front of you it's not bad. And the finished product should result in nearly invisible nub/sanding marks.

I recommend buying some popsicle sticks and gluing the sandpaper to the sticks. This way you can easily label the grit sizes and you can rub very small pieces onto the stick (rather than sanding while holding the small piece).
>>
>>14937200
I tend to just press them onto the cutting mat and then cut downwards. And yeah, you'll need to sand after a certain point.

I tend to abstain from using decals that do not denote either unit number/name, faction affiliation, or name/rank of the pilot. They just make most kits too busy. The only exception would be MS that are extremely heavy on a single color, like the PG Unicorn, which benefits from having something to break up the solidarity of that scheme.

The only third party decals I have ever bothered with were waterslides for my 1/100 NG 00 Gundams, and for the RD Kshatriya. No complaints for either

I know it's thick, had trouble handbrushing enamel paint. This kit was also my first attempt at a panel wash, but had trouble differentiating the black from the blue indoors, so I missed some sections when I was getting rid of the excess paint. Only noticed it when I went out to take pics. Another thing that didn't help was that this was for the /toy/ gm build, and the enamel paint/thinner caused a piece of the arm near the wrist to break off, so I had to deal with that as well.

Jesus fucking Christ. What's the best way to get these off without messing up the shape/angle? Just snip em off with a pair flush cutters?

I found out that aparently there was an Angelan model kit that was made, but I am not fluent in nip, so I can't actually determine anything other then it was made and the name of the kit. So could you give me some advice on where to look for kits, /toy/ does not have any advice for model kits. The name is as follows if anyone is willing to help me look.
WAVE 1/144 Series.05 SGV-417-L VR.ANGELAN
If I am shit out of luck, feel free to let me know as well, since I understand that given the age of the series, it might have been out of print for some time and thus other not available online or prohibitively expensive.

>Just snip em off with a pair flush cutters
Basically, yeah

then just VERY VERY FUCKING lightly go over the edges of it with your hobby knife to smooth it our and give it a point shape.
Don't put too much pressure on to it especially after you snipped off the safety nubs, because the plastic gets weak and the next thing you know you snapped off half of one side of the V-fin and you start crying and cursing yourself for being such a clumsy idiot

Not sure with this one, maybe it would be the mg GP01fb because some of the parts on mien got stressed really easily and it didn't really fael very stable.

Kit you were disappointed in
MG RX-178 2.0, I was hoping that since it was a 2.0 it would have lots of thigh movement but the thighs were just ball joints and some of the pegs for the joints were too short

Kit you hope gets made and why
There's a few I want to see made, like a MG Providence, NT-1 Alex 2.0, GP01 and GP02 Ver. Ka, PG Victory or V2 since I think that they would be better suited to that scale, a PG Turn A would be fucking sick, A PG F91 would also be really nice, maybe even with die cast parts making a return. a RG Nu gundam is another big one as well

It's a resin kit, or at least a resin conversion.

Probably prohibitively expensive, as resin tends to be.

And the last one. Next on the list is a much simpler GM build. Ill prolly just end up painting the red parts is a shiny metallic. Debating about painting the yellow parts gold like I usually do since the GM is a grunt suit. I REALLY like the off white/seagreen color the limbs/head are, so I probably wont do anything to those parts besides basic panel lining.

>>
>>14938010
krylon primer, testor's paint, mineral spirits (assuming testor's enamel paint), future, testor's matte topcoat

A few things about this list:
Trust me, you're going to want to use primer
Future is only needed if you're going to pane line (since it's painted, you need to do a panel wash).
Matte top coat will make it look a lot better (especially if you've used future to do a panel wash, as future will give it a glossy look), but isn't necessarily required

PG Wing Zero Custom
It's more of a hassle to put together more than it is interesting or relaxing.
The attempt to make it very detailed made for weak wrists that can hardly hold up the buster rifles, and can't even rotate the wrists 360 degrees.
It has parts that are used in areas that make them weaker for the sake of detail.
The inner frame is built to be tight as fuck, but the armour that goes on top is so loose it's hard to pose it at all without having something fall off, say half of the bicep for example.
The wiring is a pain in the ass to work out and once I finally got the batteries for it I found the lights didn't work anyway, so I took it apart and redid the wires. Still didn't work.
Fucker didn't even come with a stand. I get that for most PG's but it's the Wing Zero Custom. Without a stand you can't do most of the poses you want it to do.
I get that I probably sound spoiled or some shit but come on, it's my least favourite kit to mess around with and I have shit like the old HG 1/100 Serpent that has like 4 or 5 poses it can do, and that's being generous.

Asshimar is the best Zeta suit, hands down. Shame it gets no love outside of the Anksha which isn't even that good in comparison other than the handle grips so it can act as a base jabber.

Also all the groupbuild prizes should have been sent out by now. Which means I guess it's good enough time than any to decide what the next groupbuild will be around. The other choices from the last poll that had more than 10% of the vote were

>Build the mobile suit that you would use in Gunpla Battle
>Build the edgiest mobile suit you can think of, and give it an original backstory to go with it
>It's time to get cute, and build and customize an SD kit
>Build a melee-focused MS without any ranged weaponry (small arms like vulcans are fine)

The first one is pretty similar to the idea of "Ace Custom", so we can cross that one off the list. The other three ideas are fine, so I'm alright with reusing them. I had thrown around the idea of a Zeon build (OYW zeek stuff and derivatives) a few threads back, and some people were fond of the idea of a Graze groupbuild too, so those can be thrown in too. If anyone has any other suggestions feel free to post them.
>>
>>14938525
Personally I'd vote for the edgiest build. I think it'd be fun to see dark and gritty suits around the holidays when everything is supposed to be fun, jolly, and festive. (I'd secretly hope someone would do a gunpla to look like and edgy Santa)

Question for all you guys. Have you built a Gump-like suit from your spare parts? Not a kitbash that's meant to be some robust combining of things that work well, a junkyard mecha cobbled from bits and pieces that are very different aesthetically. Picture related is the Gump. Judau uses it during Crossbone, it's the ZZ with repairs after tons of time.
>>
If we have a Graze-off, I'm going to try something these threads inspired me to do months ago.
>>
>>14938667
I'm airbrushing with Tamiya at the moment. But my background in miniatures is with Warhammer models. To me, there's a lot of areas on Gundam models, especially things like details on weapons or small areas which are different colors than the bulk of the piece, where it's SO much easier to hand paint rather than spend time masking.

It's frustrating that Tamiya comes highly recommended when it's honestly one of the worst hand painting brands I've ever used.
>>
>>14938525
Like many others have stated, I'd be cool with a Graze-off. They're relatively cheap kits and would probably be pretty easy to customize.
>>
>>14938698
Because it's being recommended as an airbrush paint. For hand brushing use Vallejo.

Something like 1:3 or no more than half Flat Base + clear

You don' need to airbrush 100% flat base.

Test it on spare plastic to find your perfect mixture.

Some burgers here add flat base in simialr ratio to "muh Pledge" IIRC.

I thought krylon primer comes out super thick? And from what others have been saying, I'm supposed to avoid the thicker Krylon Fusion line of paints?
>>
>>14940275
Krylon primer is different line than fusion, and works okay. Although it's not a true primer, it works well enough as a base coat and is cheaper and more readily available than most primers
>>
>>14939476
Would it be better to sharpen the blade there by welding pla-plate(s) at the end and then grind that down, or is a gob of epoxy putty better for getting the shape down? Like I dunno, weld a styrene block or rod at the end (and would I even need to fix it in with pins, maybe?
>>
>>14940281
So if it's not a true primer, I should sand the plastic beforehand with 800 grit or melamine sponge, right?

So what about the paint thickness? I've had a bad time with fusions either not landing on the plastic at all, or the paint layers come out thick immediately.
>>
>>14940113
I'd take a look at the sinanju if he likes the sazabi. Especially the rg that's fairly new
>>
>>14940286
Even if it was a true primer, I'd sand the surface anyways. Having some mechanical adhesion along with chemical is always useful. From personal experience, I didn't have trouble with paint thickness.
>>
So are MG and RG kits notably more difficult than HGs? I assume the bigger size of the MG means fuck ups will be more noticeable, and thus you'll want stricter quality control in your cleaning/building process. RG's just sound like more pieces and more effort, although that doesn't sound too bad in and of itself.
>>
>>14940343
>I assume the bigger size of the MG means fuck ups will be more noticeable, and thus you'll want stricter quality control in your cleaning/building process
Actually, the bigger size makes easier to work with the pieces.
>>
>>14940343
MGs are more likely to have their parts all correctly colored (more or less). Or at least not have large sections of incorrectly colored parts. So the potential is there to do less masking.

MGs also tend to have more detailed parts, which means working with small parts. Many MGs have inner frames that the outer armor attaches to. It can be annoying to paint because they're small and the frame parts rub against each other, which strips paint. (Personally I tend to not paint inner frames and just give them a clear coat followed by a flat coat.)

I've painting a couple of MGs (still new at this) and I haven't had a bad time with them. It's just as you said, because there are more pieces, it requires a little more effort.

>>
>>14940094
Probably that new swole MS that was announced recently
>>
>>14940343

I think generally for new people

RGs > MGs > HGs in terms of difficulty, because RG has small size and complexity, MG and HG parts are similar size but MG has more complexity, which seems to be difficult for new people

It really comes down to what you think is difficult, is it the mechanical complexity or the actual model work of cleaning the nubs etc.

this order changes depending on your experience and what you want to do
