***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

It improves on the actual 4 episode series by adding new content, and the production values of Thunderbolt in general are fucking amazing. It's visually stunning, delivers on everything you could ever want from Gundam combat and has some pretty decent character development as well. The story doesn't get in the way but it is there, the only thing you could really consider it to be lacking is politics.
The fact that it is UC 0079 means you can watch it before you watch anything else in the UC timeline and you'll still understand it. So it's a great way to get someone into Gundam.
I suppose you could also show them The Origin once it's complete.

How does this look so far?
Finally got some sand paper and panel lined some of it.
I can't seem to get the white marks off the knee joins for some reason.
I've got 600 and 1500 sand paper. Should i just be more patient or next time sand while building?
>>
>>14836334

no problem, I was worried it would be junk but I've used mine for over 3 years and it still works fine

I took the filter off though just to get a better flow rate, it only filters the paint particles anyway so not a big difference.
>>
>>14836336
Get something like 1000 to use between. Knee joints got stressed, there' no fixing that but you can try scratching it with your nails and theres a chance it'll darken
>>
>>14836334
>>14836337

the fan is also brushless, I've shot alclad lacquers (which are about the highest solvent paints you will use for gunpla) and lacquer thinner straight through it and never had a problem
>>
>>14835400
Get some oil paints, look up fading/streaking/dot filters on youtube.

See, starting out dark wasn't a mistake, you just took the upcoming steps into consideration.

I think it looks pretty nice, and I don't mean this about yours specifically, but what you've learned about dark paint is exactly why dark and especially black schemes can easily look bad (unless you are a painter who really knows what they are doing) because otherwise almost all detail of the suit is lost. Experienced painters can make black work through super thorough surface prep and using finishes that actually reflect more light than just the color (like a light matte topcoat). Most people who have used matte can tell you it makes colors look lighter, and that's because it is like a light diffuser. The other way to make black work is insane gloss work like pic, that takes many coats and polishing each step and is very difficult.

256KB, 1200x979px
>>14836352

I actually think surface prep is one of the most important steps period, and something lots of the "gunpla guides" out there don't emphasize enough. They often make it sound like you have to sand the plastic to perfect and then do one primer coat, then paint, when really you can prime and sand the primer repeatedly because all that matters in the end is the last surface.

I will get something to a stage where it looks pretty smooth, prime it to to check for errors, then sand with higher grits and spray just the sanded portion, repeating until it's ready for paint.

>>14836363

I just use those to refill a little mason jar of cleanup thinner that I keep next to the booth, it's much easier and cheaper than buying some expensive cleaner in a tiny bottle
>>
just got the gusion rebake, anything i should know going in to this one?
>>
>>14836364
Hardware store lacquer thinner is harsher than hobby grade lacquer thinner. Both are harsh and toxic but the hardware/automotive grade version melts plastic far faster.

Not completely true, Repaired can only make two binders, it does not come with the parts to make the other two, nor can it make the second leg only the "repaired" one.
It does come with a bunch of extra parts and a beam javelin, however.

>>
>>14837359
It's still going on. OP just forgot to include it after the first post.

== ACE PILOT GROUP BUILD ==

Starting September 1st, you have two months to build, customize, and paint a mobile suit of your choice into your own personal design. This can range from just a repainted Zaku to a kitbashed Gundam loaded with any spare rifles and Rocket Launchers you can find. Any suit from any series is fair game, just stick to 1/144 kits and you're good. When you're done feel free to post it in the thread, but also send pics to [email protected] so that all the entries can be judged/posted at once when the group build is over (If you don't want to be judged for the contest just feel free to mention it when you send in your pics).

Prizes include:
>1st Place: Any HG kit under $25 + an Action Base 2
>2nd Place: Any HG kit under $15
>3rd Place: An Action Base 2
(Note: Shipping is to USA and Canada only)

Group build ends on October 31st, lets gunpla!

Do Gunpla require painting? I'm interested in getting started but I don't want to put some money down and have it look like shit because I can't paint well.
>>
>>14837738
They don't "require" it, but many kits will benefit from it.
If you stick to RGs and MGs it's not an especially big issue, though.
>>
>>14837738
The 1/144 kits from the 1990s on usually don't need paint thanks to stickers and good color seperation, and most modern High Grades can look alright out of the box.
As long as you trim the fucking nubs at least.
>>
Is there some kind of resource available online that shows models in the same scale next to each other or at least by a standard distance?

I'm planning a kitbash but just wanna see the proportions of various kits next in conjunction
>>
>>14837738
Most people who extensively paint their kits use an airbrush. Airbrushes don't really require any talent (at least not at the level required to paint gunpla), just practice. Hand painting requires a steady hand, but that's mostly just used for touching up details. You can generally avoid hand painting.

But many kits these days don't really need it, and can get by with just panel lining and top coating. Try and buy a kit from the last couple of years and see if you like it, and then you can think about painting.

Finished up my group build. Some stuff went a little wrong at the end due to me using old decals that probably dried out a bit and some old flatcoat thats been sitting around for a while but I think at least the colors came out nice.

And for anyone with the revive rx-78 I would suggest just fully painting over the clear part or using the stickers for the eyes if you are going to be painting it. Apparently the clear piece is too thick or something for the silver on the backside trick to work on it.

>which pretty much goes against the RG line.

The purpose of the rg line isn't to be show accurate. Or accurate at all. It's to:

"reflect what a mobile suit would look like if it were built in the present day."

Plus the giants thing is just a joke. They are 1/144 scale because in show they are customized versions of 1/144 scale kits and in the builders imagination they are "full sized" so to speak. So the real life HGs are kits of the design the builder came up with, not a 1/1 representation of the actual kit they built.

Nope, most places are just 5% off in japan. There is only some places that have 20% off like yodabashi or yellow sub. Its same as u.s, where buying online is cheaper unless the store us having a sake or coupons.
>>
>>14839879
>Nope, most places are just 5% off in japan
Yellow Submarine, Uchuusen, Volks, small nameless stores all typically give 10-20% off, it's only places like Kotobukiya and the electronics stores like Bic and Sofmap that charge full price.

If you wander around Akihabara it's actually harder to find stores charging less than 10% off than to not.

That's Tokyo though, maybe it's different in other cities.
>>
>>14839530
GundamPlanet, Barnes & Noble, Amazon. I don't like to buy in bulk so import sites aren't that useful to me.

Also sometimes ebay when a kit I want isn't available anywhere else and the price isn't gouged that much.

Its pretty close to msrp or msrp outside large cities. The trade off becomes pay extra yen just to go to a place that has it for cheap, there by offsetting the savings or just buy online from amazon.

The kits are, Astoroth, gusion rebake, schalbe graze and the hyakuri

As somebody who has the kit, it somehow expects you to get the decal in a recessed area and the laws of physics and plastic around said recession prevents that from working

Im just changing the axe to give it a slightly different shape but still look fitting I guess

Right now it's covered in epoxy putty so it looks really messy but that's because you need every part to be higher than the surface you want, the closer you get to your surface height the bigger the risk that you'll actually have a slight dip etc.

It turns out fine because epoxy putty is super sandable

Don't know if I like that design philosophy too much, while I appreciate it setting the MGs apart from the NG 1/100 and the HGs I'd prefer more care be put to armor details like panel lines and parts seperation, like the RGs are right now. It kinda seems like they wanted you to do Half-on / Half-off configurations or just that you buy two. A lot of MG gimmicks like transformations kinda seem like that, buy two to display them in both modes.

Having fun with dom test type. Can't decide whether to use black tri stars colors or regular test type colors.

Strong kit considering the axe weighs about 50% more with all of that crap on it. The putty/glue stuff is still drying but I primed it to make sure I don't lower surfaces too much when I shape the rest of it. Not quite sure how I want the horizontal part yet but I'll figure it out.

I also think I'm going to try using the stickers as masks for painting the stripes, I think it could work if the surface is smooth enough to make a tight seal.

My vote is for the horizontal piece to be sharpened at the end for a puncture type weapon in case the brute force of an axe isn't what's necessary for a killing blow although when does that happen, really
