Starting September 1st, you have two months to build, customize, and paint a mobile suit of your choice into your own personal design. This can range from just a repainted Zaku to a kitbashed Gundam loaded with any spare rifles and Rocket Launchers you can find. Any suit from any series is fair game, just stick to 1/144 kits and you're good. When you're done feel free to post it in the thread, but also send pics to [email protected] so that all the entries can be judged/posted at once when the group build is over (If you don't want to be judged for the contest just feel free to mention it when you send in your pics).

How safe is transporting loose parts in say a ziplock?
I'm considering getting a second pair of nippers and setting up a small workstation at my mom's house because that's where I am almost all the time, but my dad has the air compressor. If I wait to not do anything until I get to my dad's house I'm gonna have an obscene backlog.

Scriber, I've heard simple dentist toolkits work for these.
Razor Saw, for hacking up parts you wanna mod or kitbash.
Small clamps, for keeping a weld firmly sealed while it hardens.
Double-sided tape, for easy and quick sandpaper stick/block switching.
Cheap eye droppers, for applying just enough thinner/paint/etc.

Not necessarily in that order though.

I think if you want to get deep into true custom stuff, buy good tools and supplies, not kits.

My goal was saying "I want to be able to make things from nothing" The gun is the closest I've come on that, but one day I hope to make a full scratch design on an MG frame.

I honestly don't spend much time building now, and I'm not buying new kits. Some kits take me more than a year, I just like the creation part the most, so I do lots of little projects that don't pan out. I also love the design aspect, like making the gun. I'm shit at drawing so I basically do it with an overall idea and then piece by piece.

I read the threads pretty often and I try to read any scratch articles in hobby magazines because you do get new ideas, but mostly it's from trying stuff and saving old scraps because those can often give you new ideas.

Depends. You can use acrylics for washes, but only if you're doing it on top of a layer of lacquer or enamel paint / gloss coat. Doing it on acrylic will just end up with you damaging the paint from cleanup.

No no no. Future is acrylic based, so acrylic thinners will eat through it. You want a lacquer or enamel based clear coat. And absolutely no dunking the model. A wash is just what it's called when you use thinned paint to panel line via capillary action.

What sandpaper to use for cleaning nubs good?In the series of Kawaguchi Gunpla Tips videos, he recommends 1000 grit to start, then 1500 to finish, but the paper he used looked like a white fabric.

That's my first kit ever and shit's pretty fucking solid.
One of the better RGs out, with chromed GN blades as well and those sweet details and parts separation.
My only complaint is the limited front thigh movement due to the front skirt and hip joint.
His brothers the 00s does not have this problem and is perfect in every way.

The hg zeta NEEDS paint because of its backpack.
The build Mk-II NEEDS paint because that fucking v fin sticker.
A lot of newer hgs do not need paint.

Grab some newer HGS (Build Fighters/The Origin/IBO/Thunderbolt) and a set of gundam markers (the one with red/blue/yellow/grey/black), along with the usual sprue cutters and xacto knife, and you should be good. You can't paint with the markers but you can do small details at the least (Like monoeyes and the yellow parts of Barbatos's shoulder armor

I have two IBO HGs sitting here that will need to be painted.
What needs painting-
HG Gusion Rebake; Could use white paint over all of the white stickers (but really needs the ears painted since folded stickers are always awful)
It also actually NEEDS the backplate shield to be painted with white and black paints. The actual orange pieces are a nice touch though, at least that doesn't need to be painted.
Carta Issue's Graze Ritter; NEEDS red paint on the head fin (atrocious folded sticker) and could use red paint in place of all stickers. Also needs paint or Gundam Markers (I've seen Gundam markers used and I'd personally choose them) for the sword which is a solid black piece. I personally want to spend the time on this kit to make sure it looks *PERFECT* because I've kinda got a crush on Carta (rip)
I also have a 6th form Barbatos that I'll rip into soon and I'll determine what kind of painting it needs, if it needs it.

Pretty much half the kits out there in HG require paint, because it's 1/144 so the details have to be done with stickers or costs were cut. Some kits also simply do not come with stickers when they could have, like the HG Hyakuri or whatever, where the entire backpack is stickers but then they forgot stickers for the eyes. A simple job, just dab in five dots of red, but an oversight is an oversight.

That said, anyone should be able to handle, at the very least, this small level of detail painting.

The problem is that Bluefin doesn't seem to want to set up a Canadian side.

So, with retail markup, and having to ship countries twice, you end up with 300% markup. So a $10 HG now costs easily $30-40 now.

Like they say, the more hands that an item passes through, the higher the price markup.

Just be warned that the regular G-Self with the atmospheric pack is hot garbage and one of the worst MC gundam kits in years (shittastic hip/arm joints, inaccurate colors (Fixed in the perfect pack, but at that point you're gonna display it with the perfect pack and not standalone), stickers on awkward places like the hands and toes). Other kits like the Grimoire and Kabakali are good though

The hip/leg joints aren't the problem. It's the armor. You would have to shave a bit of the armor off in order to improve the articulation.

It also requires paint on the shoulders and the head sticker is shittastic so you have to paint that.

Honestly when you really take a look at it the problem with G-Reco kits isn't engineering, it's the design of the mechs themselves.

But yeah a lot of them are meh kits or require work.

Most RGs look good without paint imo, he'll even without needing too many of the ass load of stickers they tend to come with. As far as HG kits... the Gyan revive, or any of the revive or origin kits look great out of the box. They just tend to shine if you panel line or out in minor details with a gundam paint marker. If you're gonna get more than just the one you owe it to yourself to get the market set that comes with the panel lining pen (in plain or metallic) and out in just a bit more effort. All I do is minor touch ups with my markers, cuz no room to paint.
