***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

== ACE PILOT GROUP BUILD ==

Starting September 1st, you have two months to build, customize, and paint a mobile suit of your choice into your own personal design. This can range from just a repainted Zaku to a kitbashed Gundam loaded with any spare rifles and Rocket Launchers you can find. Any suit from any series is fair game, just stick to 1/144 kits and you're good. When you're done feel free to post it in the thread, but also send pics to [email protected] so that all the entries can be judged/posted at once when the group build is over (If you don't want to be judged for the contest just feel free to mention it when you send in your pics).

Prizes include:
>1st Place: Any HG kit under $25 + an Action Base 2
>2nd Place: Any HG kit under $15
>3rd Place: An Action Base 2
(Note: Shipping is to USA and Canada only)

Group build ends on October 31st, lets gunpla!

How safe is transporting loose parts in say a ziplock?
I'm considering getting a second pair of nippers and setting up a small workstation at my mom's house because that's where I am almost all the time, but my dad has the air compressor. If I wait to not do anything until I get to my dad's house I'm gonna have an obscene backlog.

You can get a 3-pack of gundam lining pens with black, brown, and gray and a Revive RX-78-2 from Amazon for like, 25 dollars, probably less. If you have that, nippers, a knife, Q-Tips, toothpicks, and a mechanical pencil, it's basically all you really need.

>>
>>14828937
Scriber, I've heard simple dentist toolkits work for these.
Razor Saw, for hacking up parts you wanna mod or kitbash.
Small clamps, for keeping a weld firmly sealed while it hardens.
Double-sided tape, for easy and quick sandpaper stick/block switching.
Cheap eye droppers, for applying just enough thinner/paint/etc.

Not necessarily in that order though.
>>
>>14828971

The guy might count tape as materials. But yeah, adding onto this, don't skimp on tape. That special Tamiya modeler's masking tape is actually really damn good and makes a noticeable difference. It's also not that expensive.

I've learned the hard way, that in this hobby you pay for quality.
>>
>>14828965

>>
>>14828971

I'm surprised that people aren't recommending any files or routers. I thought these were useful for doing weathering. Am I overestimating them? Anyway I really should get a scriber and maybe a saw.

>>14828978
>The guy might count tape as materials.
I'm not trying to be an ass about it. I'm just looking to expand my toolbox so I figured I'd say I didn't mean materials to save people the trouble of suggesting things I already have. I do have tape, but I still appreciate the suggestion.

>>
>>14829003

A set of metal files is nice to have, but not really mandatory, and metal files also chew the fuck out of plastic so they're not particularly good for weathering, which doesn't require files at all in most cases.
>>
>>14829003
I've got a bastard-cut file too since I've heard they're great for scratchbuilding, but haven't had a chance to test it out yet, And a small cylindrical file has been rather helpful sanding away gun barrels.
>>
>>14829012
>metal files also chew the fuck out of plastic so they're not particularly good for weathering
So what would you recommend to use to create things such as graze marks on shields, or damaged armor plates?
>>
>>14829012

I don't super agree with this, files are one of the best tools you can have, and doing non-retarded damage often involves changing surfaces substantially which you basically need files for

I thought weathering was an all encompassing term for any wear, from use, weather or combat. Sorry if I misused the term, then.

Is there any file or set of files you'd recommend? These seem like pretty good value for money, but I don't know how big the difference is between files of different quality. Is it better to spend the money on just 1-2 more expensive ones?

My goal was saying "I want to be able to make things from nothing" The gun is the closest I've come on that, but one day I hope to make a full scratch design on an MG frame.

>>14829147

I honestly don't spend much time building now, and I'm not buying new kits. Some kits take me more than a year, I just like the creation part the most, so I do lots of little projects that don't pan out. I also love the design aspect, like making the gun. I'm shit at drawing so I basically do it with an overall idea and then piece by piece.

gorilla glue's superglue (CA)
tamiya cement BOTH thick and thin

these are all really good things to have for building, there are more specific ones for doing more but even if you aren't painting these are useful
>>
>>14829327
Depends. You can use acrylics for washes, but only if you're doing it on top of a layer of lacquer or enamel paint / gloss coat. Doing it on acrylic will just end up with you damaging the paint from cleanup.

also unless you are making fuselage lines on model aircraft which I doubt, avoid tamiya scribers like the plague, they are the chainsaws of scribing and are not what you want to do detail panel scribing. Model masters scriber is excellent, as is mr. line chisel and I have tried almost everything. I use both of those constantly.

>acrylic wash on a gloss coat
So what, apply a future coat and then dunk the entire model in some thinned acrylic paint?
I was just going to use a thin paintbrush to panel line not unlike a Gundam marker/mechanical pencil.

No no no. Future is acrylic based, so acrylic thinners will eat through it. You want a lacquer or enamel based clear coat. And absolutely no dunking the model. A wash is just what it's called when you use thinned paint to panel line via capillary action.

THIS. With modelling, the easiest way to learn something new is to just DO IT. Dive head first into a project, and just try to get it to work. Even if it doesn't turn out perfectly, you'll learn something and have a better idea on how to do it next time.

What sandpaper to use for cleaning nubs good?In the series of Kawaguchi Gunpla Tips videos, he recommends 1000 grit to start, then 1500 to finish, but the paper he used looked like a white fabric.

Would something like this work for what I want?

then scroll down and click the "Want it today? Check in-store availability"
Enter your Zip code and away you go- if that one isn't in stock (it's the clearance Raiser so it could very well be sold out) try another Gundam. If you try like 5-10 Gundams and NONE of them are in stock, the store doesn't have Gunpla. Alternatively you could call them and ask.

>>14830105

>>
>>14830105
At the minimum you might want to consider some panel lining, which is literally just tracing the groves in the plastic with a pen. Almost every kit looks good with just panel lining even without any other painting.

Even without it they'll still look ok, but just "ok."
>>
>>14830122
I'd say HGs NEED paint, I have three HGs that I know I need to paint to have them presentable, and one that might get away without paint. Stickers for colors are shit and some kits simply lack color where they should have it due to low part count in HG kits.
>>
>>14830105

Its like painting a picture. Whenever I consider an action, I ask myself will this action help to make this picture a reality?
>>
>>14830128
It depends on the hg.
The hg zeta NEEDS paint because of its backpack.
The build Mk-II NEEDS paint because that fucking v fin sticker.
A lot of newer hgs do not need paint.
>>
>>14830105
Grab some newer HGS (Build Fighters/The Origin/IBO/Thunderbolt) and a set of gundam markers (the one with red/blue/yellow/grey/black), along with the usual sprue cutters and xacto knife, and you should be good. You can't paint with the markers but you can do small details at the least (Like monoeyes and the yellow parts of Barbatos's shoulder armor
>>

>>
>>14830174
I have two IBO HGs sitting here that will need to be painted.
What needs painting-
HG Gusion Rebake; Could use white paint over all of the white stickers (but really needs the ears painted since folded stickers are always awful)
It also actually NEEDS the backplate shield to be painted with white and black paints. The actual orange pieces are a nice touch though, at least that doesn't need to be painted.
Carta Issue's Graze Ritter; NEEDS red paint on the head fin (atrocious folded sticker) and could use red paint in place of all stickers. Also needs paint or Gundam Markers (I've seen Gundam markers used and I'd personally choose them) for the sword which is a solid black piece. I personally want to spend the time on this kit to make sure it looks *PERFECT* because I've kinda got a crush on Carta (rip)
I also have a 6th form Barbatos that I'll rip into soon and I'll determine what kind of painting it needs, if it needs it.
>>
Pretty much half the kits out there in HG require paint, because it's 1/144 so the details have to be done with stickers or costs were cut. Some kits also simply do not come with stickers when they could have, like the HG Hyakuri or whatever, where the entire backpack is stickers but then they forgot stickers for the eyes. A simple job, just dab in five dots of red, but an oversight is an oversight.

That said, anyone should be able to handle, at the very least, this small level of detail painting.
>>
>>14830190
HG Gusion Rebake was really bad with the stickers. Way too many and way too many that needed to be folded over, it looks fucking awful.

I have the Carta kit sitting in my backlog, I'll have to keep in mind to put some extra work into it.
>>
>>14830206
I still don't understand why the Gusion Rebake's shield couldn't have holes in the beige piece and vents on the black piece so that you'd only need to paint the sides white instead of having to paint the vents black too.
>>
>>14829814

The problem is that Bluefin doesn't seem to want to set up a Canadian side.

So, with retail markup, and having to ship countries twice, you end up with 300% markup. So a $10 HG now costs easily $30-40 now.

Like they say, the more hands that an item passes through, the higher the price markup.

So, what kit should I get? The German amazon has a few Orphans and I think I'd get the standart Graze because I like it's simple looks.
There are also greco kits that don't look that bad
>>
>>14830210

Because of laziness. Bandai is lazy. There are countless examples of some shit that could have been molded in 2 pieces or one extra piece they could have included, and it would probably cost them like 10 bucks on the mold and an extra half cent of plastic, but they say "no" and solve it with a sticker. With Bandai the answer is always laziness.
>>
>>14830190
To be fair i have built exactly one IBO kit so i can't really say much.
>>
>>14830210
The funny thing is that the Rebake's shield is the backplate for the Frogusion. And guess what? The HG for the Gusion has fucking holes in the back that the vents fit through as a separate piece.
>>
>>14830209
Carta isn't actually too much work. You need to paint the headfin red and either paint or marker the sword, but I think the rest of the stickers are acceptable (although if you're making the effort to paint one part of the kit red, you might as well put in the tiny bit of effort to paint the other parts red while you've got everything set up)
>>
>>14830216

If you're going to get an HG Graze you could try the Ryusei Go or the Carta Graze. Only slightly more expensive and they come with everything to make the base models, plus the extra stuff. But then your Graze/Graze Custom will be turquoise/pink unless you paint it.
>>
>>14830219
One of the major things they've been advertising with the season 2 kits is an increased color separation of pieces and less reliance on stickers.
>>
>>14830219
The real butthurt here is that it ISN'T solved with a sticker. if they included four extra black stickers and maybe some white ones too to slap on the shield I'd just shrug and say "ok" but they fucking didn't.

>>14830216
Just be warned that the regular G-Self with the atmospheric pack is hot garbage and one of the worst MC gundam kits in years (shittastic hip/arm joints, inaccurate colors (Fixed in the perfect pack, but at that point you're gonna display it with the perfect pack and not standalone), stickers on awkward places like the hands and toes). Other kits like the Grimoire and Kabakali are good though
>>
>>14830250

The hip/leg joints aren't the problem. It's the armor. You would have to shave a bit of the armor off in order to improve the articulation.

It also requires paint on the shoulders and the head sticker is shittastic so you have to paint that.

Honestly when you really take a look at it the problem with G-Reco kits isn't engineering, it's the design of the mechs themselves.

But yeah a lot of them are meh kits or require work.

Most RGs look good without paint imo, he'll even without needing too many of the ass load of stickers they tend to come with. As far as HG kits... the Gyan revive, or any of the revive or origin kits look great out of the box. They just tend to shine if you panel line or out in minor details with a gundam paint marker. If you're gonna get more than just the one you owe it to yourself to get the market set that comes with the panel lining pen (in plain or metallic) and out in just a bit more effort. All I do is minor touch ups with my markers, cuz no room to paint.

>this is my favorite fucking hlj meme
I like how the first sign of a shitposter is them starting by declaring something a meme. What does meme mean in this context? Absolutely nobody knows.
>>
>>14830439
the Dawkins definition is basically
>A meme acts as a unit for carrying cultural ideas, symbols, or practices that can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals, or other imitable phenomena with a mimicked theme.

The meme in this case would be "HLJ is good because they offer a **PRIVATE WAREHOUSE**". It's an idea within the gunpla/plamo thread culture.
>>
>>14830445
he didnt use it right then. because he is talking about the name of the service, like it matters.
>>
>>14830399
Wow, a company is using a nice sounding name for a product or service they offer. Would you rather they have called it "Space on a shelf in our storage"?
>>
>>14830462
No, he's absolutely right. It does matter. What they need to do is change the name of the service to "my private cardboard box in the back of the stockroom", issue an apology to all of their customers for being so foolish, and add a feature where you can look up exactly what bin location your box is in.
>>
>>14830478
i cant tell if this is parody or not
>>
>>14830478
I demand to know where my cardboard box was manufactured. I'm being cheated out of my packing costs if the factory its being manufactured at is makeing them for half a penny cheaper than a nicer option and hlj is profiting off the difference.
>>

The top sub-arms are fucking perfect, but would need to get sub-arms to slot into the main arms and the skirt.

What kit has been a pain in the ass to build for you guys? Be it from the instructions or the kit itself.

Gundam Astray Blue Frame has a shit ton of 2x steps so you have fucking parts everywhere two pages in
>>

I dunno bout you anon but I love pain in the ass builds.

When it comes together like pottery I feel like I've achieved something in my shitty life.

>>14833611
Z'Gok E's claws and those weird arm/leg things were the only things that ever bothered me.
Aren't there like a billion Blue Frames?

Bandai doesn't actually think this or any of the shit before looks good right?
Nobody actually did this with their SDEX and HGs right?
Right?

Yeah especially for older kits (or like military models) you'll want the thicker cement for parts that don't match as well because it stays wet for longer which is better for large pieces that need to be coated before pushing them together. If you also get into that you'll want to get some Mr. Dissolved Putty, because if you have two pieces that are at very different surface heights, especially curved pieces, you want to be able to add material in addition to sanding away.

Here's an example of adding dissolved putty to the top of a seamweld because the parts were still really unequal heights

I am like 99% convinced they completely ignore this advertised aspect until the last minute and then just play around the the sd until they have something vaguely resembling a weapon largely by accident.
>>
>>14833732
Recently I've been using mr surfacer 500 to fix most seams like that after glueing. It involves less sanding work and seems to do just as nice of a job.

Two HGs. A RX-78-2 and Rick Dias Quattro Custom. Gonna drag my brother into this fucking moneyhole called gunpla, also at he same time expanding my catalog of suits belonging to a char.

wave 1/144 LED mirage, would not buy again

It was a good challenge but next time I would just buy the volks kit, because the wave kit took the same amount of effort as a resin kit anyway.

It has some poly parts, but it is a true glue kit so nothing stays in place by itself. I pinned both of the leg ball joints because luckily I had read they have a tendency to snap when attaching the legs.

You either have to assemble AFTER paint or have one of the most complicated masking jobs I can imagine. I went with the first option and it was still terrifying. Pic was after more than a weeks work of correcting dips and gaps etc. and actually has many parts assembled already, the shoulders were 5 pieces etc.

Never again basically.
>>
>>14833758

Yeah I think that would totally work for most things and is maybe a better general suggestion because you can spray it too. These were like half a mm different in height so I needed a lot of material.
>>
>>14833777
I don't even spray or thin it. I just have a jar of it unthinned and just dab it along the seam with a toothpick.
>>
>>14833782

totally, I just meant you also have the option to spray it for stuff like hiding sanding scratches, so it may be a good option for someone who only wants to buy one thing.

>cutting part off sprue like a fucking mongoloid
>sink too much energy into it
>it goes fucking FLYING, exceeding Mach 2 and breaking the sound barrier
>it hits the box I have on the table directly in it's flight path
>assume the box stopped the tiny hand-backing projectile
>it didn't
>the part must have ricocheted off
>search the entire room
>its nowhere to be found
>this part created so much force when it impacted the box at supersonic velocity that it ripped a hole in the space-time continuum and warped into another dimension
Fuck it, that's it. I'm done, no more Gunpla for me.

That's what happened to my 1/100 Barbatos. For almost a year my fucking mouth piece has been missing in action so I refuse to display it
>>
>>14833856
It's the (B16?) hand backing for a 1/144th 6th form Barbatos. To make matters worse my floor is covered in white bird feathers so I can't even rely on color identification to try to find it.
I mean at this point I wouldn't even care if the piece was warped beyond all recognition, I just want to know where the fuck it landed so I can try to piece together the physics of a part that should have stopped dead on the table when it hit the box.

Thanks for the advice. Was working on the HG GM but will put it on hold until I can get some regular cement on saturday. And I'll keep the putty in mind, especially for when I start on my mobile armour idea.

Gunpla has my self worth at an all-time low and basically I wish I was dead.

Does anyone know much about these? Just found out they exist and I'm freaking out. Just curious if the instructions are as easy Gunpla to read.

They have the same descriptions as gunpla on amazon:

Snap together no glue required
Colored plastic; no paint required
Runner; marking sticker; color sticker;
instruction manual
