For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

SD Group Build

Rules:
Pick up an SD anything, plane, Gundam/other MS, whatever, if it's generally an SD it counts (so I hope to see someone do a D-Style). Obviously, per all group builds, you'll want to paint it.

Submissions:
Email it to [email protected]
USE AN ACTIVE EMAIL ADDRESS

Due Date: November 1st

Good news! A kind anon has purchased some prizes for the group build. He has decided to do a random drawing rather than judge them like I did in the previous group build. Winners will be contacted via email.

For those curious, I intend to start the secret Santa signups on October 1st.

Secret Santa

It's that time of year again. Just look at the form and fill it out. Signups last until December 1st, pairs go out in the days after that.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdprprkU_4UBARdot0ASSmoUoxghk9bOPVuRrvZKfghAZQRbg/viewform?c=0&w=1

A few things:
-Use an active email, I don't want to be hounding you and then have to repair someone.
-Use your full address, I don't know every damn city and zip code in the US.

A new option, Cards Only. If you pick this you're assumed to be willing to ship international (it's a card after all). It doesn't have to be a handmade card, just something nice. Of course handmade is nicest, but not everyone has the skills for it.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdprprkU_4UBARdot0ASSmoUoxghk9bOPVuRrvZKfghAZQRbg/viewform?c=0&w=1

As always, I'm available here, on IRC, or at [email protected].

In-case anyone was wondering what the prices are for some of the kits on clearance now:

MG Dark Matter Exia: $14

I got some Vallejo model colors for hand brushing (it's virtually the only brand readily available in my country, plus I hear they're good for hand painting). I tested it out on some runners, and most of the paints brush incredibly well after some thinning. They stick perfectly, have great coverage and don't leave any brush strokes.

All except for the yellow, that is. The yellow (Model Color Lemon Yellow) simply will not behave well. Out of the bottle it's too thick and leaves brush stokes, but even though it's thick enough to leave strokes it still seems too thin in that after dragging my brush for more than maybe 1-2 cm, the paint is thin enough that it doesn't cover well. With enough thinning to avoid brush strokes, it basically becomes watery thin and pools, with the paint being basically translucent. Even after multiple coats it's just not enough.

What am I doing wrong?
>>
>>5961669
>RX-78-2 Revive: $2
I really fucking wish I wasn't in the UK
>>
>>5961676

Not to mention, I tried mixing it with some other paints for different hues, and even a tiny bit of any other paint was enough to overpower the yellow. Like 10 drops of yellow and one of brown resulted in a paint that was basically just brown instead of the honey-mustard color I was hoping to achieve.

It just seems like the pigment density in the yellow color is far, far lower than in the rest of the colors.
>>
>>5961676
their yellow never behaves well, none of their yellows.

Hey everyone, I have a question about spraypainting.

I recently did the priming for my first custom, which turned out well. Today while painting, I didn't see any discernable difference in the color of the primed peice (bottom) to the painted peice (top).

How many coats would I need for white (gundam color spray) paint to take effect? I sprayed about 10 inches away, 20% humudity, 10 mph winds today. Used up the whole can to cover every peice. Is it my technique? Too windy?

Excuse the brown within the panel lines, its a leftover from my snapfit of the kit,

Check online before you do though, since local stores might not have clearance items anymore or their stock could be wrong. Ain't never any harm in calling beforehand.
>>
>>5961680
So it's not just me?

Do you have any advice on how to still be able to use them, then? Like I said they're basically the only brand readily available here. I can get Tamiya sometimes but it's ridiculously overpriced (like 5$ for the 10ml bottles, whereas Vallejo is 2.5$ for 17ml) and I can't mix them with the Vallejos.

I can always order from sealmodel I guess, but I'd rather not wait for 4 months just because I need one pot of paint. I might be able to find some Model Master paints, though.
>>
>>5961693
I wish it just looped on her ass. I don't care for the pull away.
>>
>>5961682
As far as I know, people just prime with white to paint something white.
>>
>>5961676
Yellow is just a really really annoying colour to paint. Yellow paint is inherently very transparent so it's very difficult to get a solid coat that is smooth.

I'll just say to start with that you should never paint yellow over anything other than a white/very light grey undercoat.
>>
>>5961704
Not that anon, but are you blind? The primer is clearly gray (and not even a particularly light gray), whereas the painted piece, while lighter, is clearly also gray. Neither are white.
>>
>>5961669
Not all barnes and nobles are participating I'm guessing.

That might be part of it, then. I was testing on a spare runner I'd primed a medium grey. I don't have any white primer but I guess I'll try painting a white undercoat first. Thanks for the tip anon.

You ever get tired of your current project and start screwing around with random kits and spare parts only to end up with something you actually like a lot better than your current project?
>>
>>5961682
10 inches is not very far. You probably can't get in much closer than that without flooding the piece, although since presumable the gundam color sprays are formulated to be sprayed on models, perhaps they're made for closer spraying.

I've never tried the gundam color sprays, but I've used the white gundam marker and from my experience it suffers from a similar problem. It's more greyish off-white than actual white. I guess it's possibly intentional since most gundams (like the rx) aren't actually pure white. If it's the same paint, that might be your problem. Try another brand.

That little button on the right should show whether they're in stock or not, and often clearance prices. Oddly, it only works for me on mobile, but it does work. You'll still want to call ahead anyway since in stock kits might be inventory errors.

you can get little bottles of "thinner medium" which work fairly well. additionally, if you can't find a bottle and are willing to shell out a bit of money, games workshop base paints have a yellow which is a bit darker than "yellow" but works fairly well. their entire base line has more pigments for base coats.

>>
>>5961771
I'm not sure I can get GW colors here either, but I'll try and look.
With regards to thinning the Vallejo stuff, looks like I can get the thinner you're talking about so I'll try that. How about adding a little future instead, though? Would that work?
>>
>>5961789
you know, i've never thought to try. if you add a tiny bit it will thin it, and it won't bead up like water, so it should work. the only downside i could see would be it being glossy, but that's not a big deal
>>
>>5961793
I guess I'll try that next. I don't care about gloss since I'd be doing a gloss coat (and later a matte topcoat) anyway. Thanks again anon.

You need to resize your images so they take up less than the screen when enlarged. If you are too stupid to figure out how to do that, you will NEVER understand how paint works.

They typically only clearance the gunpla about twice a year, if not only once. B&N do big inventory shifts to prep for summer and winter seasons where a decent amount of stock gets flipped over and they have a lot of newer stuff coming in. Especially when they flip it for winter, which they're doing now, because they need to make room for the christmas stuff and the shit ton of toys and gift items they're going to start getting in.

When I worked there there was always someone on "Toy Duty" leading up to Christmas where they were constantly unboxing and shelving toys because people were buying them up too fast to let them sit unstocked for long.

Especially anything Frozen and Minecraft this one year.
>>
Went over to a local B&N in NJ on route 1. It's been cleared out sadly. There goes an hour.

>>
>>5962046
Yeah I know...

I also toyed with the idea of wiring up two bathroom exhaust fans instead of just one.
>>
>>5962034
yeah, looking at the costs
fan = 50
fan controller = 18
tubing = 10
duct flanges = 8
clips = 6
exhaust port = 8
wood = 15
filter = 10
then whatever sand paper, varnish, nails, etc just keep adding more to it.

if any thing breaks, I can just call in warranty.
the time itself to buy and built it all also adds up hours, I can just work an extra day and pay for the booth instead.
>>
>>5962051
My problem is I like building shit. It's a very, very good thing I don't currently have a working shop with tools. Also I used the fan below, it's 50cfm which has been plenty. My biggest complaint about my booth is the lack of lighting. Just putting lamps around isn't quite enough.

http://www.lowes.com/pd/Broan-4-Sone-50-CFM-White-Bathroom-Fan/1076121
>>
>>5962051
For $50 you could get three of the fans those cheap chinese spraybooths have. I'm serious, the fan is just some no-name 120mm server fan. It's not bad since server fans have high static pressure relative to many other fans but it probably cost them like $8 at the most and you can find better ones for $15 retail.
>>
>>5962056
but then I'd have to worry about wiring and all that mumbo jumbo. the booth's like one day's worth of work for me without the hassle or headache of wiring and what not.

if it breaks, I can just get my money back via credit card or the warranty and resell if that time comes.

I'd rather enjoy building models than building a spray booth.
>>
>>5961682
White has the lowest pigment count of all colors, so if you want that perfect snow white, it'll take you a few more coats than with normal colours, also yeah, gundam white might not be perfect white, rather an off-white
>>
>>5962058
Server fans have standard 3-pin headers. Just get a $20 PSU, jump it with a paper-clip, and you basically have an easy fan-setup with switch and reliable power for like $70 bucks if you're actually spending $50 on fans.

>>5962127
When I first started, I just practiced straight up on the kits I wanted to do. Heck, my first airbrushed kit was even pre-shaded.

The way I see it is that the more practice you do outside of model painting, the more money you're wasting since it's not like it's digital drawing where you can dick around as much as you want. Every kit becomes an experience you learn from, and I constantly update a personal gunpla doc with notes with any changes I did, what I found works well, etc. I've also been working with older kits and making my way to more modern ones since you'll learn a lot more with the fewer parts separation. I wouldn't even say I'm fantastic, but I can look at my kits so far and see improvement with each one. It also becomes a record to show how far you've come in the future.

Looks interesting. So, this raises the question: Is putting the model together entirely before you go about your panel lining and seam welding and whatnot? I've been not doing that and I have to wonder if doing so might give me a better perspective.
>>
>>5963780
I build section by section. So if the torso is first I cut the pieces out, clean them, panel line them, and then assemble that section. That's a straight build. If I'm painting I tend to do the same thing, just that I'm usually working on one section for painting, one priming, and one building, so I'm not waiting on one thing or the other too heavily.

I had to do some looking man. They were put UNDER one of the clearance tables, took me like ten minutes of wandering in that section to spot them. Apparently that store also had a Gyagya and RX-78, but the cashier said they're probably still being unpacked.
I'd call and talk to an employee if I were you, it's possible they were put in a stupid location or they're not out of the backroom yet. I talked to three different folks today and they all told me different things.
Just keep at it; as far as I know B&Ns inventory system is pretty spot-on, so if it says they have a kit online, it's somewhere in the store.

How on earth am I going to paint the frame of the Formula skell kit (the inner frame IS most of the frame, with scant armor pieces hanging off it), when a lot of is ABS plastic jumbled in with regular PS in assembly? It doesn't look like that C-jointing ABS and PS parts to separate them is viable.

The not-lacquer solvent in Tamiya paints attacks ABS plastic, right? Or even the solvent in Tamiya primer, right?
>>
>>5963917
Assuming you mean Tamiya acrylics and not enamels, they're IPA based. I may be wrong, but to my knowledge they will not attack ABS.
Tamiya primer is lacquer based, though, and will attack ABS. That said, it's only really a problem if you flood the piece. A thin layer of primer shouldn't hurt the plastic, if you make sure to mist it. In my opinion the risk is probably better than the alternative of using a non-lacquer primer, which pretty much all blow balls.
>>
>>5963924
Well, there's very few people blogging or posting finished/painted Formula kits, so it's hard to go by.

>>
G'night friends. Hope your paint is properly thinned, your waterslides go on perfectly, nubs turn out clean and that you do not breathe in any plastic shavings. Have a good one and be safe!
>>
>>5963924
Looking at the manual, there's many places throughout the kit that has a lot of ABS joints linked to each other, or several places that use ABS jointing close to each other. If I C-joint all those loops of ABS, I'm afraid of breaking the kit from the weight or from forcing in the ABS, or you know, the whole thing become a hand grenade or shattering at the joints.

I was thinking of using the Badger primer for almost the entire kit, since I've tested it and it can be sanded down. The armor pieces are just PS and I can use regular primer on them.

Yeah?
>>
>>5963944
I don't have enough experience to say, really. I'm surprised that there is any acrylic primer that can be sanded.

>>
>>5963952
Just don't use the Vallejo airbrush flow improver with it, or it becomes more rubbery in quality. Most of the homebrew flow improvers (don't use the ones that call for IPA) will work well with it.

I shot it thinned, through a 0.2mm needle AB at near-30ish PSI and I got reasonable results. But because it's still has the qualities of a urethane primer, it will cover scratches and imperfections, but at the same time can risk obscuring surface detail if you lay it thickly.

Name some one off kits you'd want to see as a event, pbandai exclusive that most likely won't happen. May or may not buy but just to see in model form.

Barbatos evolution, split down the middle with custom head, chest and crotch parts to merge 6th form and lupus. The head probably be tricky as it needs separation the most but left side facing you be 6th forms skirt, arm and leg where as right side be lupus. Of course you'd have to swap some frame I'm guessing but it might work.

Diorama parts. Like the white base hanger but vary. Gaw hanger cut away. HLV that has boosters or just re-entry mode. Fat uncle cutaway with straps for sniper. Inside Grypse, cutaway of building Norris grappled down, big tray or other land battleships Etc.

Other possible suits are the Landman Rodi since now that it's a Tekkadan suit and not an evil enemy suit they might give it another go.
I do hope they add the Labrys to the Gekko lineup though, it's a cool looking Chernobyl fucker and I'd honestly buy one to stand next to my Garm.

Although if I was Bandai I'd launch it as a single HG kit containing the blue pieces and the yellow pieces so you could swap between the two.
If you want both at the same time you have to buy two kits but you'd have to buy two kits at the same time anyways and having both in one kit would probably encourage more people to buy it.
It's like two extra pieces of plastic too so it wouldn't even drive the price of the kit up.

Finished with the Hammerhead.

Have not watch the show so I can't tell how accurate this is. Judging from the lineart, I guess it is ok?
Still, as you can see compare to the Star Destroyer, the fine detail on the thing just can't match the Gunpla.

Quick question.

I have never done a gunpla kit I. My adult life, but I am an experienced in table top games painter (40k etc) And have around 10 years of exp.

Should I start with master grades? (I own an airbrush and intend to paint the kits)
>>
>>5964602
Also I prefer "mass produced suit" kits the most (gms, zaku, flags, etc).
>>
>>5964602
Early master grades are pretty easy.

Maybe start with a cheap High grade to get used to snipping and shaving parts off the sprues?
>>
>>5964602
I think it would be wise to start with a grunt suit HG or two just to see if you even dig it, they're cheap enough. I can't say anything bad about most grunt MGs except the GM MGs are kinda... bland.
>>
>>5964613
>>5964602
Yeah man, start with whatever you like, the grades are mostly matters of part count. Have fun!
>>
>>5964602
>>5964613
Its all the same shit, if you can cut pieces off sprues and clean up the nubs you can do any plastic model. Main difference between the grades is just complexity of the engineering behind the kit.

Painting techniques may differ slightly though.

Are you asking for kit recommendations? Personally I'll recommend the new(not master grade) 1/100 IBO kits, but really anything is fine.

For people who just panel line and topcoat, do you do panel line washes on bare plastic or do you just panel line with markers? Would it be necessary to apply a gloss coat first in this case, to protect the plastic?
>>
When you guys did snapshits, how did you guys put stickers on? Espically people with big hands.

I just use pens, ultra fine tip copic pens and pour type pens (never pour type on ABS plastic)

Right on the bare plastic, no gloss coat necessary. Then top coat over it.

So I'm reading through the guide, looking to step up my snapfagging game. Specifically, I'm looking at panel washing in the most idiot friendly way possible. I see the guide's method involves using a paint brush and capillary action to flow the paint into the lines but I could swear I've seen a method that involved just dunking the things in a paint solution then shaking/wiping off the excess. Is there a name for that or is it the same thing only heavier-handed?

Thats the shitlord way of doing washes, probably only applicable to miniature wargaming where they just wanna churn out an army. It also works because their scale is so small, it functions as a (poor)substitute for shading. Not even scale modellers would do that.

They generally use either the fine tip ones, which are more pens than markers, or the "extra-thin" pour type markers, which essentially work like washes (you touch the panel line with the tip of the marker and it fills it in like in a panel wash).
I think it's possible to do something similar with real touch markers, but it would be harder, plus it would smudge and erase far more easily due to real touch markers being water based. Real touch markers are more useful for light weathering effects, such as making soot smudges near vents, making armor look muddied, or doing gentle shading. They're basically used where you would want to smudge the ink on purpose.
>>
>>5965850
Some modifications to the legs, especially the feet, the skirt armor and probably replacing the head with a graze kai and it'll look good.

Okay this does look nice, but I heard the RG RX-78 wasn't so great.

Also, I have a question. Is there anywhere to reliably get replacement sprues? I'm asking because I recall trying this before with some site and was told I'd have to wait and see (I never did get the parts). My Revive Guncannon's head is....gone. It's a long story, but it's gone. And I mean, sure, it's not a pricey kit, I could just rebuy it, but I'd rather not have the excess parts/headless body around if possible.

>>5966069
Well they each have their pros and cons. Sometimes, like when you want to do the perimeter of a depressed area (for example lining the edge of a circle) or want a very sharp point, it's easier to do with the pen type. But for most other cases, pours are cleaner and more uniform. Then again, like panel washes, pour types can harm plastic (especially ABS) and it's easier to stain the model if you're not careful (like if you accidentally rub the paint in an area you've sanded, and you didn't apply a gloss coat first).

I would say your best option is to get some of the pen types, as well as a couple of pots of enamel paint and thinner / lighter fluid for a proper enamel wash (although if you're not doing any other painting, you can also do this with acrylics). That way you get the best of both worlds. And if you're just using the paint for panel lining, you will pretty much never run out of it.

Also, I haven't really looked into the line much, but I know the Architect is sort of the "core" frame for the Frame Arms line. But let's say I don't like any of the premade kit designs. Did Koto ever release standalone armor parts for this body so I can build my own monstrosity?
