***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Why don't they just mass produce gundam heads?

It is probably cheaper to produce a GM head since it's simple and just one color with a visor slapped over all the sensors, rather than the shit going on in a Gundam head.

Yeah this is the kind of thing that actually takes more skill/practice, before this it's kind of just figuring out how the brush works and doing pieces evenly. This is fun because it adds this kind of new dimension to a kits look and you have to actually get better at painting.

== ACE PILOT GROUP BUILD ==

Starting September 1st, you have two months to build, customize, and paint a mobile suit of your choice into your own personal design. This can range from just a repainted Zaku to a kitbashed Gundam loaded with any spare rifles and rocket launchers you can find. Any suit from any series is fair game, just design what you would use as a MC suit. When you're done feel free to post it in the thread, but also send it to [email protected] so that all the entries can be compiled/posted at once when the group build is over.

Group build ends on October 31st, get building!

I was honestly thinking of doing no prizes, but I guess it'll give some incentive for you guys, and I do have an unused giftcard laying around that I should probably use. How does any HG kit under $25 sound?

>>14674687
It's what people voted on, I guess the way I worded it makes it sound like "Do whatever you want". Just make an Ace Pilot's suit didn't feel like it had enough unf to it. /toy/'s GM Groupbuild was about two months too, so I figured two months would be enough time to acquire kits/materials and work to your heart's content.

Also since I guess money's involved in this group build now I should adopt a trip to thwart fakes.

>>
>>14674740
Having a second person shipping out prizes might be a bit confusing, but the giftcard might work depending where it's for.

>>14674752
Second and third-place prizes might be cool. How does this sound? (Going off of Amazon prices)

I've been royally botching my attempts to learn airbrushing
Using a cheap Testor's "babby's first airbrush" kit that relies on canned air

I can't get it to actually spray paint, it looks like the paint nozzle on the canister is freezing over, I assume from the canned air. Is that actually what's happening/how to prevent that? I don't think the paint canister feed whatever is clogged up because I keep it good and clean

Also, after about the 4th time I've run out of paint while still on the same color I feel like color-matching is getting old. Do other anons use big paint bottles for their air brushes, or mix colors up in a larger bottle and add to the air brush bottle as needed?

Last question, I'm using acrylics, how long should I wait for it to dry before adding the top coat? Since it's pretty dry to the touch at 1 hour, but apparently takes ~a week to cure

It is quite an open category, but I think it's deeper than it seems. All the good Ace Customs aren't just a mish-mash of various parts loaded up with weapons, they're still fairly consistent in design with the faction's Mass Production suits. Take Woolf, for example, and even the Hyaku Shiki is still very much in line with the Zeta and later iterations if you ignore the bling.

SPEAKING OF WOOLF. I think a lot of the AGE designs deserve better than they got, so I'm using my new G-Bouncer for my entry. Was going to use Adele arms and legs, but it was out of stock at the time and I forgot the Diva Colour version was a thing, which was in stock. So... I'm repurposing an HG Spallow's arms and improvising with some modified Transient legs.

Pic related is the colour scheme I'm thinking of using, along with a mock-up. I've decided to instead use a modified G-Bouncer head though, with the 'ears' cut off and a commander horn.

Lmao girls don't give a fuck what you collect if you are confident and say "Because I like the look of it" or "Oh this is my hobby, I build for fun" Ive had girls compliment my gunpla collection and figures because you know why? Because I dont drop spaghetti.

And if a girl doesn't like them or makes fun of them, guess what, they aren't for you.

I realise this could be a bait post because this little fumina is nothing compared to an actual cast off figure which admittedly can be a bit of a hard sell in comparison.

This guy gets it. The key is to not go full retard. Women like men with hobbies and other priorities. Women are selfish creatures they see you being dedicated to something other than them as a threat and it makes them a little more attracted to you, their ultimate goal is to get you to me more dedicated to them than you are to that thing. Of course if you do fall into that trap you lose because they got what they wanted and there is no more challenge there so they start looking elsewhere. Its the basic principle of you want what you can't have and what they want is your time and attention. all of it.

not really, I had heaps of Ayanami Rei figures that nearly fit on one shelf and it was totally fine(But ive since sold most of them for more Gunpla)
But it depends on how big the shrine is I suppose and what miscellanious things you add (dont have a birthday cake with candles still lit in front of it basically)

a fumina shrine at the moment would be like a couple of her gunpla and statueshit, I dont think it would be a problem for some anons to have one that size

Studio Reckless kits are fixed posed, so it has no articulation. It's not shit because it looks 100x better than the Bandai HGUC Xeku-eins. Some people like resin kits because they are not manbabys that need model kits with articualtion so they can play with them like action figures in their parents basement.
Mecha resin kits are models that you build and paint, like Hasegawa or Tamiya military models. They are not intended for people who want toys.

Bandai kits are toys that you can paint, but most of the people who buy them usually just snapped together and play with like toys. I'm not a manbaby so fuck that shit. I prefer a real model kit.

I can almost guarantee that particular Studio Reckless kit will have parts separation for most of the parts that need to be different colors if not virtually all of them. Short answer, spray.

Long answer, you want an even coat of primer that allows other paints to adhere to the surface better. For that reason, any *proper* primer for plastic models is a laquer, because it will have a stronger chemical bond to the plastic, giving you a more durable base to paint on top of. Laquer paints dry fast, so brushing isn't really an option; ergo, spray.

Build Fighters/Try if you haven't already. Try's a sequel that builds up on BF but fucks up a lot of things that made BF great.

SDF Macross is solid asides from some QUALITY animation and some parts of the post-war episodes. If you like it continue watching in production order.

Martian Successor Nadesico is pretty darn good comedy with hints of a harem, and it still holds up even the dub.. Avoid the movie though if you don't want to spoil everything that made the TV series good though.

If you want a more serious real robot show with some comedy bits here and there watch Full Metal Panic. The robots are more grounded to Geass S1 levels before the 7th-9th generation KMFs take the stage asides from about two-three exceptions.

I honestly think it's better than Wing, SEED, and IBO. And of course Destiny, but that goes without saying. It's primary issues are tone, and some logic errors, like Moon Moon and a certain character's death.

Just to preface, I dropped 00 after 3 episodes, I'm not sure it got better.

The problem with it for me was that the protagonists begin with superior firepower and the moral high-ground, while their enemies were hopelessly outclassed. If they only had Exia or something, I'd be fine with that. But they have a Gundam team from episode 1, all specialized for different roles, so they have no weak points.

It's just so boring, there's no tension. It doesn't help that none of the main cast were particularly interesting to me. Every other Gundam I've watched had me interested enough to finish the show by the end of episode 1.

>>
>>14677633
Gundam 00 gets much better as S1 goes on, the economic blocs equalize the battles in their own ways pretty early on.
>>
>>14677633
>The problem with it for me was that the protagonists begin with superior firepower and the moral high-ground, while their enemies were hopelessly outclassed.
That's sort of the whole point though. Celestial Being is some spooky, shadowy paramilitary organization that came out of nowhere claiming to be the world police, and they can get away with it because nobody else is strong enough to stop them. Having the moral high ground is subjective though, as the show repeatedly shows that the aces of the power blocs are good people, while CB employs an emotionless child soldier, a Cylon, and a psychopathic serial killer.

>But they have a Gundam team from episode 1, all specialized for different roles, so they have no weak points.
This is only half true. On paper they're supposed to have no weak points, but they're all human and are subject to error and screwups, which leads to their downfall. Halfway through S1 Exia loses in battle, and Graham Acker in his Flag defeats Dynames. The struggle becomes the aces, who are infinitely more likable than the Gundam Meisters, catching up to defeat the world's villains, when the Illuminati are revealed to secretly control everything. It's like some weird, redone version of Act 1 of Wing.

Season 2 is pretty much just a retread of Zeta though.

>It doesn't help that none of the main cast were particularly interesting to me.
Fair enough, I didn't particularly care for the protagonists either and just watched for the robots.

It's actually really cool to see the rest of the world start to adapt and use different tactics in attampts to take out the gunams though. For example, the HRL (Russia and pretty much the rest of Asia) found out that because the GN particles stop communications, if they put out several 2 way communicators, they can find out where the base ship is and where the gundams are. They almost catch Kyrios and Virtue while Dynames and Exia are busy protecting the ship.
As for the crew of CB, like the rest of the show they start to grow into their own as time goes on.

>>
>>14677633

00 starts boring because 00 actually does worldbuilding, and does it pretty well. 00 has easily the best worldbuilding of any AU and it's what makes it work so effectively in the second half of S1. With all the politics and the relative low tech of the setting you're actually able to see how a world like our society might turn into the Universal Century.

00 S1 is pretty much brilliant because it's Gundam Wing done right. You have these strange supersoldiers who barely get along and all seem autistic as fuck, and they're just shitting down on an unprepared humanity. But then it goes beyond by delving into the stories of the people opposing the Gundams after having established Gundam superiority instead of simply following the Meisters around. It shows the tech advancing and tactics changing and as the gap closes, the Gundam pilots can no longer simply be carried by their Gundams. There is a lot of intrigue and oerlapping plots that start happening rapid fire after the setting and characters have been established, and the ending of S1 is almost perfect, you could basically end the series right there and still be satisfied.

I mean holy fuck maybe people are used to Tomino Gundam where shit starts out fast but then slows to a crawl after the first 3 eps by which point everyone goes "oh well might as well finish it," but 00 is the opposite. If you can sit through the establishing episodes it's great.

People hate the IBO kits? They often come highly recommended, especially to new builders since they're excellent for their price point. People who bitch about IBO kits don't remember the kind of shit you used to get for $10.
>>
>>14678191
IBO is so blasé
>>
>>14678234

But anon, that's why the Graze is so great.
>>
Why does P bandai exist?

Wouldn't those models make more money in the long run anyway?
>>
>>14678317

Maybe, but they could also not.
P-Bandai eliminates risk while allowing them to get the most accurate sales data and make the most profit.

Anybody have experience the RG RX-78 Casval Custom? Or the MG?

Sell me this kit

It deserves to be treated better

I'm planning on making an Utena out of the Nobel Gundam and attaching some wheels to her shoulders and ankles, but I'm currently still practicing painting on a graze.
>>
>>14678356
Since you said experience while I was in China the local hobby store inside a huge shopping mall had a RG of that displayed for the price of a MG

I didn't buy it
>>
>>14678391
Did it look good? I would pay MG price since I have no room to paint and I love the color scheme.
>>
>>14677620
No, I just do them.

Yeah it looked good

I would have bought it if it were MG just for the collecting value (they had 1 left) but I never had a good impression on RGs

A lot of people here probably won't say you should get it since they say the RG RX 78 is a hand grenade and the MG Casval's custom doesn't look good from the pictures on Dalong

I didn't take a picture of the RG in the store but it looked better than this even though the builder didn't do a great job (no panel lining or most of decals)

So has anyone else experience paint still being sticky three days after having been used to spray paint parts? The paint on the parts themselves is dry, but the paint on the rubber part of the clips that I used is sticky for some reason.

So, has everyone decided what they're getting themselves for Christmas?
My haul actually came in today. It'll be wrapped later tonight and then I just wait four months to play.

For me AGE suits have that perfect crossroads between being good designs and not familiar enough that customs look derivative.

I think I'll add more black to the scheme, I don't know. Is this better than >>14674956 ?
>>
>>14678950
It looks cool, but I think I prefer your first design.

Gundam X blu ray when?

Design one is bretty good. It's already very slick, you could find a way to make it slicker. Less is more.

My fiance and I generally shop very early. Especially with my weeb shit. Already got more than half a ToQger collection packed up.
She's got a shit load of Fourze stuff coming her way and a few kits.

My first Master Grade or Real Grade, I dunno which yet.

Master Grade is HUEG and I like that, but literally the only thing that turns me off the Real Grade is the scale.

Help me out in picking, anons?

I wonder how good Kotos kit of the EVA-01 Tv will be
>>
>>14679092
I'm actually doing the same thing.
Do what I did and find the MG of your first kit and grab that.
I want an RG as well, but not sure of which.
>>
>>14678914
I intend to get a Qant and Astaroth by Christmas, but as for what I'll be getting I guess it depends on what the woman decides for me.
I kind of enjoy that though, it means she can appreciate the shelf space it occupies a bit more because it's one that she chose for me.
>>
>>14679175
My lady's the same way. She's a little sad that I pick out so much of my stuff.
>>
>>14678356
Same as with the regular Gundam RG. Shoulders that pop at a slight move. Hands don't hold the best, shield is wonky, and beam sabers pop out easily.

Otherwise, not a bad kit. Lots of fun to put with other Char RG and HG kits.
>>
>>14679115
RG 00 Raiser is phenominal in terms of build quality and value. Much better than the Quan[T], even.

In terms of MGs, I like the Astrays but they're not everyone's cup of tea. Fenice Rinascita is a nice kit, as are most of the Wing EW MGs (Leave both Deathscythes well alone). My favourite MG is Gundam X, though.

NEW THREAD
>>
>>14678356
The MG is basically a recolored 1.5 Gundam.
>>
>>14679182
Mine asks me for a list of kits I'm interested in and cherrypicks that for designs she thinks are neat, color sets she thinks are interesting, or that she remembers me talking about
She has lamented that she isn't as insightful about my wants as I am about hers though, I chalk it up to not really being too deep into Gundam. So far I've only gotten through 00 with her, but I'll give it some time and maybe we'll get through another series. She enjoyed the robots well enough.

Eva kit from Koto are okays. i owned the Rebuild version of the Eva-01. be carefule if you plane to buy one; the "flap" over the entry plug have tendecy tu fall you have to glue it and my kit have some reaction with the Mr.Clear matt finish, they cracked and fall in pieces.

and i finish the basic assembly and sanding of my Mazinkaiser by the way.
>>
Which version of the graze should i buy a bunch of for practice purposes?
>>
>>14679572
Either the Ryuseigo or the Ritter
Ryusei has all the parts for Graze Kai and Ritter has all the parts for stock graze
Mix and match fun
>>
>>14679610
If i get 5 and they dont look like ass i could put them in powerranger colors.
That could be cool to pose.

I started snapping together a Revive Gouf. It's beautiful. Makes me want to get another one to seam weld and paint and do it justice.
