***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Is the MG Zeta 2.0 a hand grenade like the RG? I don't plan on transforming it.
>>
>>14648256

Short answer, no.

Longer answer, no, because the reason the RG is such a hand grenade is because of the smaller scale. With 1/100 you can get away with a lot more.

Conclusion, get the Zeta 2.0, it's fucking fantastic.
>>
>>14648275

How about a customized grunt suit competition? Like take any gm zaku or whatever and do a custom version as if it were your personalized mobile suit. Build the suit you would pilot if you were too good for some standard shit but not quite good enough for a GUNDAM.

It spins off nicely from the previous gm group build and allows some range. For some people it can be about how many cannons they can put on a hi-mock, for others it can just be coming up with a great, cohesive color scheme.

What do you think?

I'm going to use a quote from the last thread to help illustrate my point here

>I think people just forget to make up a reason why the suit is weathered.

How did that Mk II get so banged up. Why do the shoulders and torso have it bad and if not much worse than the legs and feet, which should have the most wear and tear if it's a space suit. There's no logical progression to any point of weathering on the suit except for maybe the skirt thrusters, and even then the effect you're going for is layed on way too thick. Even the beam saber handle wouldn't get burned up like that from the beam itself.

Your application techniques itself are fine, it's just that it's coated way too thick for it to look good. Weathering needs to be subtle to look its best, and random splotches of grey don't pull it off as well as a soft wash like on pic related.
>>

It and the other Gundam-Frame HGs are all really fun since you get a full inner frame asides from the head and feet, and since the thing's so cheap it's actually a really nice build. If you feel like doing lots of paint details get the Gusion Rebake, if not go for Barbatos 4th or Kimaris Trooper.

On a scale from "it'll stay as long as you aren't rubbing it continuously" to "literally a temporary tattoo without it" how necessary is topcoat for them?

The paints themselves are good, but don't use their primers, use whatever you're using now. Not because they're not good, but because you're going to pay out the ass. Read http://funakatown.com/images/Building_Gunpla_Final.pdf this guide. Also know that Mr. Mark Softer is much hotter than Micro Sol, so if you're using Future for a gloss coat you should probably use Micro Sol instead.

Alright, I read through the decal section and then trudged back up to the topcoat section after the decal bit set in.
I know I've read that gloss coat down first helps decals slide on better, and you flat coat seal them after you're done but I don't have an airbrush.
What's the best topcoat to aim for assuming my main supplies come in through amazon? There's one hobbyshop in the area off the top of my head but I'd only like to haul ass over there if I absolutely must.

Trying to think up some edgelord color schemes for my DM Destiny that aren't just red/black.
This is difficult
>>
>>14649565
The thing about edgelord stuff is that it's supposed to be cliched and boring stuff that a kid thinks is cool, but which an adult would facepalm and regret every building.

If you could make a sinister color scheme which was not cliched, it wouldn't exactly be edgelordish.

A long time back, someone suggested painting a gunpla in actual blood, I wanted to try that.
>>
>>14649613
Wouldn't the blood dry out though and leave you with disgusting brownish chipped shit?

How about a Build Fighters theme to commemorate the Try OVA recently, however shit it may be.
Just make it a 'gunpla you'd use in a gunpla battle' theme.
Just have to name the gunpla BF style.
That way, people joining wouldn't have to adhere to a specific theme and many more can join in.

Aside from the Sinanju, I've built every UC RG released so far (well, one Mk. II and one GP-01, but they're functionally identical). I think the RX-78-2 is the one I'd recommend the least.

Don't get me wrong, the idea that they engineered a working core-fighter for 1/144 is really cool, but the original Gundam is the oldest RG and has the worst engineering. Even the Zeta, of which I have two, is better because, at the very least, the Zeta has some novelty. If you want a regular suit, get a Mk. II, if you want a transforming-y suit, get a GP-01 (either version), and if you're up for something really awesome get a Z'Gok. Just finished building mine a few days ago and that thing is amazing. Even just OOB. Guy has so much personality it's not even funny.

The RX-78 isn't a tough build or anything; it's probably the easiest RG alongside the Zaku 2. Instead, the issues are purely about engineering. As a OYW suit, the RX-78 is actually quite small even compared to the Zaku. I think the engineering just wasn't there to make a great version of the kit at that scale.

I really can't recommend the Z'Gok enough, though. Build process was fun and the guy has amazing presence in person.

Most of the smaller panels that sit atop others, I'm afraid. Parts pop off the shoulders, the arms, and the legs. Basically, anything that's small and is attached to a moving part needs to be cemented down. Also the thrusters. Beam sabers are another loose part, but you may want to take those off from time to time.

Joints are also pretty finicky, but nothing you can do about that.

>>
>>14652033
Here are most of your trouble spots on the kit. I also experienced the front knee sects popping off under articulation, the biceps coming undone under articulation, and the tension holding the shoulders together is also pretty garbage. Leg articulation, however, is great and the panels come back together perfectly.

This was an impressive kit for when it launched, but Bandai's engineering has come so much farther it's not even funny.
>>
>>14652076
Er, disregard the circle on the leg. Not sure what I was thinking there.

I may also be wrong about the little black parts on the backpack. I know that I cemented the backpack immediately after building the kit, but I can't exactly remember if those got cemented or not.

I'm about to attempt painting for the first time on my HG Barbatos. I'd like to just fill in some details like where the frame appears on the face, the red on the shoulders, chest and knees along with the grey on the toes.

How do you make your color a lighter or darker shade with this sort of method? I know you can mix the different tamiya clears easily for hues but how do you deal with lightness/darkness?

You can mix a clear colored paint with a finishing coat to make it lighter.
>>

Tamiya doesn't make clear whites or blacks. Any recommendations?
>>
>>14652424
I think Tamiya sells it as Smoke, so that should work. Otherwise, Mr. Color clear line has black in it so there's that.
Also for lighter shades, you just use less coats of the clear color. Look at the image, the first pass looks like a light pink instead of the deeper red it becomes. I mean your base chrome color basically is your "white" anyways

Hard-tip Gundam markers are too thick to penetrate thin panel lines and they smear off easily when touched. Soft-tip markers smear so badly that you need to wipe them off, and it's easy to over-wipe.

The panel wash markers are much better, since they can line very narrow lines with a single touch, are resistant to casual touching and need very little wiping. However, you'll want some form of alcohol to clean it since erasers leave residues and alcohol nukes topcoats. Also, the nib is too thick to properly penetrate certain panel lines.

I'm currently using Tamiya accent panel wash; it has a very fine nib and spreads well, while being resistant to smearing. However, the fumes (both for the wash and the cleanup thinner) are very strong. Unlike the previous three, you will need to wear a proper mask when lining stuff.

In my experience, gundam panel wash markers do okay without a gloss coat and the alcohol (EtOH or IPA) does not harm the plastic. The results were bretty good on my MG 3.0.

However, there are stories of the Accent Color Panel Wash and the X-20 Enamel Thinner eating away at uncoated plastic, so you definitely want to topcoat them before it. I did 3 layers for my Leopard Da Vinci, but it seems overkill, since one layer was enough for me to apply it to the TIE Advanced x1 without issue.

However, alcohol eats the topcoat, so beware!

How would you advise cleaning up then, if I plan to panel wash in the future? Just do it right the first fucking time?
I'm about to paint a kit and so I'll want to panel line it afterwards as well. Should I just panel line on top of the pain with my markers then?
>>
>>14653501
Basically if you're using alcohol-dissolved wash, topcoat after lining. If you're using enamel thinner-dissolved wash, topcoat before.

A lot of people mix their own and that uses the enamel method, so they recommend coating before.

However, if you're planning to paint a kit, you should topcoat to seal the paint in and then use an enamel-based wash.

A physical eraser might work too, but it could leave residues.

>then use an enamel based wash
Hmm. Guess I'm shit out of luck when it comes to panel lining my painted kits for now.
What's available in town is testors enamels, and we happen to have their thinner. A friend is trying panel washing out with that, so I'll give it a shot one day. Just sucks considering I already bought these markers.

So, my dad is a pretty old immigrant from Lebanon, and as a kid he loved Grendizer.

He also likes building gundams with me, so I'd like to surprise him with a Grendizer model kit. I'm not knowledgeable at all on any plamo kits besides the gundam ones, what's the best Grendizer kit out right now?

I'm trying to grow out of snapfaggotry and I use rattlecans, FWIW. Try the Tamiya accent color washes? They're bretty good.
>>
>>14653532
I'm doing hand painting for now cuz it's easiest and safest at my apartment. I already spray primer and topcoat.
>tamiya washes
I hear their thinner is pretty strong though, and it'd have to be something more to order online. That's the annoying thing.
>>
>>14653536
Yeah, the enamel thinner melts plastic like xenomorph blood, from what I've heard. Hence the top coat.
>>
>>14653542
I also just checked the price. I'm probably gonna test my luck with testors considering it's like 3 bucks whereas that set is over 20 for three.

How loose are the cannons? I'd like to know what I'm getting into if I get this. Is it an actual problem?

>>14653623
It's crazy how good the RX-78 Revive is for its price. All that articulation, that parts efficiency.
>>
>>14653626
reasonably sure its because when i started, i put the two torse things together and one of the nubs got in the way of it tightening completely. Theres a seam on the right hand side thats barely noticeable but seems like its enough

Beargguy III, petitguys, my jims, and some SDs.
>>
Kind of interested in one of them zoids kits, are they worth the price?
>>
>>14654347

They require a lot of detail painting and more seam welding, because they are Kotobukiya kits.
>>
>>14652743
Future can be brushed on easily without any thinning

>>14653849
Your paints, on the other hand, do need some thinning

Is hobby lobby any good? I checked their site and i dont really see anything cool.
>>
>>14653701
I do find it a bit too tall and slender, but the trade off of it using the Zaku 2.0 frame is worth it.
>>
>>14654395
they have some supplies but every time I go there I'm disappointed, and I've been to at least three.
>>
>>14654417
What was bad about it just the selection of plamo?
>>
>>14654424

You have to realize Hobby Lobby is the most pleb shit for the masses, so it's not going to be that good. Hobby Lobby is like McDonalds, you go there and it's serviceable but you don't expect quality and selection.
