Practically anything with more than 2 pilots.

There are some weapons that give you a new weapon when you fully upgrade them, but DESU I never particularly found a use for them.

Either you upgrade whatever attack you use to kill grunts and/or your finisher - there's basically no reason to upgrade anything else.

It took forever, but the FMW3 english patch has been update. All the text from chapter 35 to 44 is fully translated, and various bugs have been fixed... by untranslating things.

A lot of people reported Personal Skills involving spirits not working. It turns out that was because we translated the spirit names! For example, when the game tries to trigger Yuugi's Bring on a Brawl, it tries to cast 直撃, but that doesn't exist anymore because it's Fury now. You'd THINK it'd use the in-code ID ("CHOKUGEKI"), but nope Sanbondo doesn't give a shit.

Similarly trying to translate attack names was an unending slog of "okay this character is breaking the game somehow, what is wrong this time, oh my god there are like 70 characters to go". We eventually decided to just give up, out of fear that even if we did eventually get it all done some enemy would have something broken somewhere and crash the game as soon as the game tries to load it. So all of data4 is going to be ignored.

And while someone did manage to get into the .exe, recompiling wouldn't work on my machine. And even if it did, Game Maker is super awful about representing Japanese and the whole thing is a poorly organized mess anyways so fuck trying to ducktape Sanbono's mess of a game.

God I miss FMW2. That game's code made sense.

FMW3 was a completely new engine. That's why the game was so incredibly buggy on release, they practically rewrote everything just because they could.

There's still all this legacy stuff from FMW2 in the data files, and even some new stuff that was clearly supposed to build on top of it. But none of it was used, everything was moved into the incredibly bloated .exe file.

Let's see for Turn based RPG's I'd recommend; XCOM:EU/EW/X2 for the customization and upgrades. How many of the SMT games have you played? They're pretty fun, and the older ones play sorta like Etrian Odyssey.
The closest thing I've played to a visual novel is MGQ, so no help there.
For Shmups I'd suggest; Rayxnaber 1-3, some of the Raiden games, Garanda, Aleste, Space Manbow. I had to ask my friend who loves Shmups for help there

She's (and her twin sister, which SRC didn't implement) kinda a huge bitch, and not in an entertaining way either - outside she's all smiles, but inside she basically manipulates people with that false appearance to get what she wants, so you don't get the humor factor of people reacting to her being a bitch until they're about to get their lives screwed over.

The plot explanation seems to be that because she's a daughter of a famous colonel, nobody dared to discipline her after Daddy goes MIA, but her douchery is honestly past "brat" level and "did she inherit Super Evil genes from the mom's side or something?"

Game's an OK but simplistic dungeon crawler with a mecha skin - gets repetitive quick but seems to be short. The thing that's taking up a lot of time is that it's actually pretty hard and there's a time limit (in in-game days, not real-time) so I had to restart the game like three times already. Maybe I'll just cheat if I fail again.

When I'm done with this game I'm gonna summary dump the plot though... you know, just in case someone wants to implement more Eroge into their cast list but Muv Luv Alternative and Demonbane are too mainstream for you.

(I see some potential with the setting but I don't know one would crossover the plot in an SRW without completely Megazone 23-ing it in a handful of stages)

Rai and Aya are always on my lowest priority to ace. Plus, you can use them to finish off low HP enemies during the start of a turn by decombine -> attack -> combine. Also useful to put Repair/Resupply on them so they don't waste a turn if there's no viable targets

Well that is my fourth run so I am trying to Ace sub-pilots like Rai, Aya, Sleigh and Shouko.

After getting some ACE bonuses, I'm honestly wondering what the hell they were thinking.

-Shouko's bonus, and Sleigh's bonus only work if they're decombined/standalone unit. So if they're combined to GCK, or Hyperion, they don't do anything.
-Ratsel's bonus works with black units, but Dygenguar doesn't count for some reason.
-Gilliam's bonus is useless
-Leona's bonus is a complete downgrade from the last one (yes, it's made to work with her unit, but her units bonus might as well be worthless).

I'm glad they didn't just use the same bonuses for everyone, but many of them are too situational.

Well, for one thing the entire point of the R-series is that it can function separate and combined. For another, it would be really dumb to make Rai and Aya permenant subpilots when they're not and are very likely to get personal upgrades next game. Plus they're trying to customize ace bonuses to the characters, and Rai's entire thing is being the best pilot on the SRX team.

So while it may make sense for how you play, it's not happening and I'm glad.

It's a little hard to work with at max capacity, though.

He doesn't make a good partner for the Hyperion, due to a complete mismatch on attack ranges and P-move attacks.

A simple solution is to just give Gespenst Haken a Range +1 and have him attack from a distance. It won't completely solve the issue, but at least you'll let Phoenix Showdown's range match up with GRAMXS.

On the other hand, you could team him up with the Grungust Type-3 and have a very good partner. With two female pilots in the Type-3, you wouldn't get the full bonus, but I'd imagine it's generally more effective.

The only issue is that you can't abuse double ALLs with Gespenst Haken. He can still equip a weapon, but it wouldn't be as strong as simply upgrading the Gespenst Haken's internal weapons and relying on Night Fowl to slay everything with G-Combination nearly half killing the supporting member of the enemy twin.

A hard game if you get skill points. Most are actually pretty difficult to get, even more so if you try going for bosses, and killing as many enemies as possible.

Focus on upgrading hit, evasion, and armor for most of the early game (hit being the most important), then work on everything else.

Alright, I beat the game so as promised - here's my Executive Summary of Type Zero (零式) (which I bet everyone is super interested in), now you can add its plot to your fangames without playing the original but pretend that you did!

(Actually, like I said, if you're one of those Cast List idea writers and can figure out how to implement it into an SRW without D's Megazone 23 and what other series it would go with, I would like to hear it.)

So the basic premise of Type Zero is that there's a (annual?) tournament called the "Chariot Festa", where competitors bring in their mechs and enter a dungeon filled with AI robots all over.

Winner is determined by "most points" which you only get from killing said bots and from containers. There's a cutoff limit for disqualification every week and the tournament lasts for 3 weeks total.

The final rule is that you can only use "approved" weapons purchaseable with points earned from the competition and can't bring your own in, explained in-game so that the competition isn't instantly "Richest guy wins" like a Mobage PvP.

The main character is Otori Akane and her twin sister, Naomi. They're daughters of a famous Colonel but unfortunately Daddy raised his death flags by going "This is going to be the last one! After that, I'll come home and spend more time with you girls!" and went missing and their motivation is to find out what happened to him.

SPOILERS - You never outright do.

There's a bunch of sub-plots involving your rivals but I can't talk about them because... well, I have no idea how to complete them within the stupidly strict time limit the game imposes on you.

And here's all the interesting plot and setting info, which by the way, you have to basically piece together from a bunch of sources and it isn't just delivered to you on a silver platter, but this comment is too long so I gotta split it.

Type Zero Story and Setting spoilers

The setting seems to be Post-Apoc, though it's hard to tell because the game's scope is localized to just one town surrounding a dungeon.

At some point in the past before the game begins, the Americans wanted to developed new military technology and produced an AI powered by human brains.

Unfortunately, the only ones available were criminal brains, so inevitably it goes rogue on turns on them.

The "Master Core" proceeded to produce all the AI mecha bots that are the main enemies of the game (named "Tenants") so that it can fuck the world up. It's implied that most of the mecha in the game world are basically Tenants that people managed to take down and then refitted to fight back against it.

Despite their best efforts, the military could basically only just "contain" the Master Core in its facility but not destroy it - and it's still producing units (with an additional goal of wanting to capture and assimilate humans into itself).

So the "Chariot Festa" was developed as a cover story to get free labour to keep it contained - you attract a bunch of skilled competitors and then supply them with what they need to blow shit up. Which explains why a big criteria for scoring is killing a bunch of AI bots and not some kind of deathmatch set-up defeating your rivals.

That being said, I'm kind of disappointed that you can kill the Master Core, but it's treated as a joke action and doesn't affect the ending in any way. I guess in canon, your character never finds out about any of these and the tournament goes on indefinitely.

The gameplay is a simple grid-based dungeon crawler but the battle system is a bit weird and it actually took me a while before I figured out what was happening.

Basically, it's a simple Action Points system where you can pick as many actions as your AP allows from this list.

Aim (+ Hit %)
Dodge (+ Dodge %)
Approach (to use Melee weapons)
Use Item/Weapon

The oddity comes in how hitting is handled - basically, anything below 100% is a miss and anything above is a hit. So the battle strategy involves trying to figure out what the "optimal" amount of "Aim X no. + Use weapon" and Dodge is for the opponent you are currently fighting - for example, sometimes dodging is just impossible because the opponent's accuracy is too high, so maybe you decide to go for an all-out assault on round 1 before it can get a chance to use laser Barriers etc.

As for the characters, like I said, I think I missed out on a lot of the plot because of time limit - I think I could probably have rescued most of them from a BAD END or something... but here's what I got out of them.

Guan - The MC's legal guardian. She's kind of a pushover and mistreated by them and the main plot of the game is actually them learning to not be such assholes to her, but DESU I don't think it works very well because the MC is a Grade A asshole and the plot doesn't really have that much opportunity to correct her (she sorta does but it's too rushed)

Shiro / Chigusa - A couple basically, although Shiro is kinda the rough type that's all "NO YOU SHOULDN'T BE HERE IT'S DANGEROUS" - Chigusa sucks so she kinda drops out in the first week but stays around to be lovey-dovey with him.

Hiyori - She... has tits? Seriously, the MC hates her because she's better looking while she's flat. She goes missing after week 1 no matter what you do, although in one branch you're directly responsible for that.

George - Nice father type who joins the tournament at the request of his son. He gets drugged and turned evil by the last character in the picture. In my branch, he kidnaps Chigusa and Shiro fights him in town area, getting both of them disqualified from the tournament - I think I was supposed to save him somehow but oh well, tragic ending for him!

Erika - The most "I sure love to be cryptically useless" character in the game, whenever you meet her in the dungeon, all she tells you is "If you see Ogaulko, run away"

It turns out that Ogaulko is a powerful robot that assimilate... her boyfriend? or some other and her motivation was probably to destroy it or rescue him or something. If you arrive at the last day, she'll be assimilated too and you're forced to kill them both... I don't know if you can save them, arriving early just means she's not there

Masataka - Holy shit I hate this guy though I guess that's intentional. He's a creepy lolicon stalker that wants to get into the MC pants and ruins a bunch of the other characters lives to "get rid of the competition." Despite clearly being bad news, you're not allowed to launch rockets into his face until the very end of the game after he caused a bunch of drama.

I guess there's a bunch of extra characters like the shopkeepers and bartender but they're filler NPCs.

I think it had to do with Microsoft's global push for market domination of their Windows OS - the Japanese were using some other OS before, but it became pretty obvious that it was go Windows and relearn everything or go bust at some point of time...

... and most of them just decided "fuck this" and went to consoles instead.

There were maybe a handful of companies that supported the PC for a surprising amount of time (Falcom and KOEI comes to mind, though Falcom dropped out some time ago) but mostly the ones that stayed behind are pr0n games... because it's their ghetto since consoles don't allow them (Thanks Nintendo!)

It doesn't help either that major Japanese engineering/technology/science business sectors will never use Windows for their systems. I think their OS/Kernal of choice is something called TRON. There is actually a well documented story about how MS actively lobbied against and tried to sabotage the TRON project so they could retain a total monopoly over the market.

This combined with MS's pandering towards actual super Otaku archetypes means the only people who will ever touch Windows are game developers themselves, some hobbyist devs and the actual real life hardcore basement dweller possibly serial killer type fanbase.
