***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Is it normal for primer to make plastic really brittle or am I doing something wrong?
I was testing on a runner this Rust-Oleum can I found at the hardware store, and I accidentally over-sprayed a bit
I let it dry for like a day and when I came back to it the runner snapped right in half just from a little pressure

It is such a sad floppy mess
>>
>>14619952
That doesn't sound right.

It also sounds like some solvent in the primer went into the plastic and started snapping polymer bonds.

Or somethign else had happened to that bit of plastic earlier in its lifetime to cause such an effect.
>>
>>14619963
honestly, the fuel tanks are really bad compared to the rest of the kit
while they are divided in 3 sections each, the nubs are super noticeable all over the round surfaces
considering pretty much everything else was undergated, its as bandai gave up on them

as for the bazooka, the hardpoint where it is supposed to go is really weak, merely putting it into place gave it those white stress marks
>>
>>14619897
My first Gunpla, the HG Wing Fenice. I liked the style of it but the pieces were really easily prone to falling apart, it scared me out of HGs until I grabbed the Kamiki Burning which feels much better build wise and is probably my most stable kit

What's the general feeling of the metallic style shit? I personally really dig it but I never know when I should go for it. It's silver as a base, then painting over it with clear colors right?

I'm thinking of doing it to a Zero Honoo. I wish I could make it blue flame thing but I don't know how to change the clear orange to clear blue.

>>
>>14620015
It looks pretty good on curvy kits like Sinanju and stuff.
People usually put gloss black below the silver, but I've got no idea why. I think using silver or chrome as the base suffices

Also somewhat related, anybody know what a candy coat looks like with a matte topcoat?
>>
>>14620054
The gloss black increases the overall contrast, the black darkens it while the gloss makes the reflections brighter
>>
Why do all the thunderbolt line of models cost so much more then a regular hguc?

>>
>>14620054
Metallics look better better on a black base (more reflective and realistic). I would post pics, but I can't find the spoons.
>>
>>14620122
Have you seen them? More detail and parts than quite a few HGUCs
>>
>>14620130
Not him, but so it's then
>Prime
>Paint gloss black
>Paint it silver once it cures
>Clear color after that
>Topcoat gloss
Do I have that right? Should you gloss topcoat the black before silver?
>>
>>14620122
Because there's more plastic in them, duh.
>>
>>14620142
Most gloss coats will actually slightly dull the shiny finish, especially if you use high quality paint.

There are also gloss black primers available so you don't need to prime and then paint a gloss black on top.

Would cement fix this up real nice and strong? Super glue didn't work, and I'd rather not spend money on cement only to find it doesn't work.

I've got all of them in both RG and MG, except for Exia in which I have the Dark Matter in MG and I vastly prefer the RG.
They're cheaper, more detailed, and have all the gimmicks you can pack on a 1/144 scale, what's not to like?
And they're the least hand grenade RG bar the MkII.
Only problems is the legs movement is limited by the front skirt on Exia and the QanT shield binder tends to fall off the attachment.
Everything else and the 00R is pretty much perfect.

So awhile back I talked about how I tended to buy kits in 3's well I tried painting my first model a month or two ago and it was a Char's Zgok, I fucked up pretty badly while I was happy with how I painted the Joints I couldn't figure out how to properly apply a primer to the rest of the model so parts of it are grey or 3 different attempts at white.

The Shop I use to by paints claims that Flat colors are primers but I'm just not seeing it, Should I buy paints that explicitly state they are primers I'm hand painting and most of my paints are testors...

>>
>>14621138

>>
>>14621175

>>
>>14621164
Primers in the traditional sense are more than just flat colours. Primers are meant to bite into the plastic and provide a better surface for the paint to adhere to, which is why "real" primers are laquers. This is also why they're meant to be either airbrushed or are in a spray can.

Also, I found that testor's are annoying to work with, and you're better off going with a different brand, or at least using testor's model masters line, which is supposed to be nicer to work with.

>I just buy packs of blades and change them out once per kit.
But what do you do with the old blades? And, do they get rusty?

>>14621544
I never knew that. So, rust is inevitable on any hobby knife if I don`t do this process? And about the oil, do people always have to wipe the oil off to continue working? The oil doesn`t rub on the plastic of the kits?
>>
>>14621555
Personally I find my generic Tamiya cutters work pretty good, although I worry about rust.

>>14621561
The blades do get rusty after about a week or so (I live in the tropics, very humid). More importantly, they get blunt. Blunt blades are bad because they don't cut well, and they make you use more force which might lead to an accident. Plus, nothing feel quite like gliding through plastic with a new, fresh knife blade.

As for blade disposal, tHere's a compartment in the blade package to put the old blades, I just dump them in there and load up the new ones.
>>
>>14621561
Not that guy but proper hobby knives for modelling come with a two-part package, one that holds new unused ones and one that has a one-way slit you throw old ones into.

If you're using a knife that doesn't have one of those or can't swap out blades, it's probably a CRAFT knife for art, not a modelling knife.

The oil layer seals the metal from moisture thus preventing rust. Most people will wipe it off before use to avoid making an oily mess all over.

I found this kind of lubricating pen at a local japanese dollar store. It's just paraffin oil in a pen but it's convenient for this type of uses.
>>
>>14621568
Now I`m even more curious, couldn`t you just do the oil process to prevent rust? And sharpen the blades yourself to save some money?
>>
>>14621547

Really though for the price you'd expect a little girl cosplaying as the nippers to at least deliver them by hand and build your first kit with you, or at least have a limbless fucknugget to come in the mail.

How can she hug and leglock you without limbs?

But yeah, over here the Godhand costs more than, oh, a fucking MG kit. (SGD$90 for the Godhand vs $80 for an MG Fenice Rinascita )
>>
>>14621547
If you can buy it at a fair price.

Honestly an okay pair of nipper is enough.

Cut away from the part, trim it down with the nipper without making gorge marks (distance to part may vary with brands, blunt and substitute tools are not recommended due to their tendency to leave horrible gorge marks), trim with knife and sand.

That's about it, a pair of very sharp nippers just saves time by being able to cut much closer.

>>14621690
I saw it for $85 at hobbypoint.

Yeah, that's what I do too. Hobby Point has started selling sanding sponges/sticks recently and it's a miracle what they do to plastic. I can polish it to a gloss shine with the 1200 grit along, to say nothing of the 4000 grit.

Also, I thought the price tag at Hobby Point was 89.90 (I saw it at Century Square).

2 quick questions

Firstly for anons more experienced in airbrushing than I, what would be "ideal" conditions weather-wise for actually airbrushing? Like, I know that airbrushing in high heat/high humidity is bad, but what can I realistically get away with temperature-wise since the humidity here rarely gets under 70%?

Also, I remember seeing a while back anons posting how they stored their boxes/spare parts in different ways, and like a big dummy I didn't save any of the pictures because I didn't see myself having a dozen of these damn things around. Anyone feel like sharing some space-saving storage techniques?

>>
>>14623948
You can buy shit and have it stored for you up to 60 days, and you can combine items into shipments freely pretty much
>>
>>14623948
When you buy a kit on HLJ, you have the option to send it to your private warehouse. I don't know what it looks like, but I've just imagined it as like a cubby hole where they put kits you buy into. You can ship anything in your private warehouse out at any time in any combination of packages. However, they will only hold kits for 2 months, then they ship them out whether you want them to or not.

What I normally do, is when a restock list comes out, place an order for any kit that I would like to have, then keep it there until the next two restock lists come out. If nothing on those lists interest me, then I'll buy something I've had my eye on for a while and ship it out with the other previously bought kits so I don't waste a ton of money on shipping a kit or two.

FINALLY FUCKING FINISHED

The decals on this little shit were excruciating. My first Real Grade, Titans MK-II

Is everything after HG this decal heavy? Took me longer to detail than it did to build.
>>
Just got an RG Wing Gundam EW, anything I should know about this kit?
>>
>>14624349
why would you even put those decals on if they look like bird shit
>>
>>14624370
I have no idea but it looks better like this than without any detail
>>

Usually I only put on the big important ones and a few of the small ones as time goes on. Flaking gets too common when you put on that many.

So fun, first MG, although I think some of the late decals are waterslides so I'm a little nervous for that. Also attempting to panel line for the first time (not in this pic)

Sorry for sideways pic btw
>>
Is it wise to buy RGs ot MGs when I am just starting off?
Of course I am not planning on tackling those yet but sometimes I hear how some kits are out of stock and it worries me.
>>
>>14624584
Yep! That's what I did. Remember that you can start wherever you want, there's no difference in how difficult it is, just in part number.
>>
>>14624584
The only reason it's suggested to buy an HG is because they're cheaper, so if you fuck up or end up not liking the hobby it's not like you just wasted a ton of money.
>>
>>14624665
Just to clarify, I mean why it's suggested to an HG if it's your first gunpla
>>
>>14624594
I would argue that HGs can be trickier as their parts are smaller.

Wired up for the most part. Does not like to be in an idle pose, but that's fine. Gonna do seam welding on the legs, then redo the paint. Also need to tighten up the sockets for the wings and attempt a repair on a messed up right hand. Still a ways to go before its "done." Might be my first diorama piece if I feel up to it.

Are girls really into traps? Funny coincidence, because apparently I make a good trap.
That one weird girl in high school (we all know one like her) convinced me to try on her clothes once and put make up on me and all that stuff, and it was kind of really weird how much better I looked as a girl than as a guy. I try not to think about it too much though because I'm wary of the path that'd send me down. Also it's weird thinking about how I'd totally fuck me if I was a girl.

When painting a HG, do I assemble the joints then paint, or should I really paint every individual piece, joint or no?

Second question. I still have trouble on safety blocks. What's the best way to remove them? I've been taking my nippers, getting close as I can, cut them off, then try to take an x-acto knife and try to get it uniform and sharp, but I normally fuck it up.
>>
>>14626161
>What's the best way to remove them?
sandpaper
>>
>>14626043
On the bright side, you have a kickass story to tell now.
>>
>>14626161
Personally I clip excess with nippers carefully, then I knife to trim it down to a minimum, then sandpaper to uniform smoothness.
>>
>>14626210
This is what I do as well.
>>
>>14626210
I do this too, just be sure to have sandpaper on a stick so you sand it flat
>>
>>14626161
I actually just trim it down to the point where theres just a little discolored bit on the surface, then because whenever I sandpaper it down it kinda roughs up the surface, I use a gundam marker to color it to match the surrounding area. Works pretty well.
